Mmmmm. As much as I don't mind retail, did you ever pick up the UK rental version of Batman 1989. Warner's went the extra mile to promote the release on VHS rental with yellow spoil reel plates on the VHS tape, and a rather nice yellow Warner hard case. Then, in 1992, Warner did the crossover release of Batman Returns for both the rental and sell thru market. An experiment that went all the way back to Rain Man in 1988. You could rent Rain Man and buy it at the same time on retail. JFK was the same, but the big box rental version of JFK is a bastard to track down on ebay. You usually find the PES version, but never the PEV.
