While not as successful as Nintendo, the Sony handhelds absolutely were good moneymakers here in Japan and you can't go to any game shop without having your pick of hundreds of PSP and Vita games cheaply. Even the Wonderswan, Game Gear, and Neo Geo Pocket were well supported here and I have dozens of games for each. Rivals, but not crushed by Nintendo or anything, and other than SNK's bankruptcy all lived out a normal retail life cycle. The biggest issue is Nintendo of America's business practices in fighting to take store space, and with the typical American casual gamer's lack of interest in the niche titles more popular in Japan. Sony was drowning in yen from sales of dating sim adventure games on PSP and Vita that wouldn't have a chance there.
Yep. Nintendo for some reason is the only one who understands what the casual consumer wants. A ps vita with a SIM card reader is cool and all, but a casual gamer doesn't want that.
You missed the Steam Deck. Although, since it’s a handheld gaming pc that spawned a lot of competitors it’s not directly competing in the same space. It will be interesting to see if the Steam Deck impacts how Nintendo designs the Switch 2. Let’s Hope that it’s actually powerful like the rumors/“leaks” say. Then we’ll at least see a bunch of ports of the last gen games coming to Switch.
I'm gonna be so honest, I forgot the steam deck existed. But now that you mention it, it is going to be interesting to see how nintendo addresses the complaints of power in the switch 2 when it finally comes out, and I wish I brought it up in the vid, so thanks for pointing that out!
@JoJoChamp64 You’re welcome. Also, the Steam Deck can easily emulate Nintendo’s games, so you mostly just need a Switch to download your own ROMs (or like the other guy in the comment chain said embrace the high seas). Let’s hope that the Switch 2 actually lives up to expectations, and it isn’t just a marginal upgrade like the Switch OLED (getting flashbacks to the fabled Switch Pro. My attitude with that is I’ll believe it when I see it since there’s so much AWFUL clickbait).
@@devingorney8051 Just buy indies on switch, they have plenty of good games. They've also got the Persona series, a few nice titles here and there, and can also run Minecraft and Fortnite natively if that's something you like.
I don't get it. What did Nintendo do with their IP that's so bad. It seems to me, they respected their IPs so well, they're worth more than any of Sony or Microsoft's IPs.
The Vita has proprietary memory cards; those things were (and continue to be) super expensive, so that definitely didn't help sales. Sadly, the revised model didn't help things, even though Sony switched to using actual microSD cards.
2:20 - 3:03 isn't entirely accurate. After the video game crash, Atari was split into separate companies, Atari Corporation and Atari Games. Atari Corporation would be brought by Jack Tramiel, whilst Atari Games would be jointly owned by Namco and Warner Corporation. Atari Corporation focused on making game consoles and home computers, whilst Atari Games would focus on making arcade games as well as games for the NES under the name Tengen. Atari Games were the ones to sue Nintendo for unfair competition after reverse engineering Nintendo's lockout chip, whilst Atari Corporation were the ones who made the Atari Lynx. Neither event had anything to do with each other, except that they involved separate video game companies that shared the same name.
Nothing. The PSP is undisputably one of the greatest handhelds of all time and a device that was far ahead of its time. Saying it isn't just proves you have no idea what you're talking about and that you're extremely biased. Even the VITA is great hardware, Sony just abandoned it too soon.
The switch is plain too overpriced with it's games and sudden paid online and it's UI lacks so much quality the previous ones had, it lacks customizability it lacks personality it lacks so much, it doesn't feel right to me
Well Nintendo captured the super casuals, plus their games are very accessible to anyone. Sony and Xbox fanbase is ultra filtered comprised mostly of men, meaning their fanbase is by default less than Nintendo.
0:04 they don't first off, saying nintendo hates their fans is far off the mark, it's more accurate to say nintendo is fiercely protective of it's brand
You don't understand, Nintendo IPs are gold you'll have people that would make their own rip off games and sell them to you. That's what Nintendo goes scorch earth on. As for making their old games able to be purchased, They did that on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS, people complained they had to spend money for those games even stupidly saying "I have the original cart, I should get this for free!" Yeah heck it was said for the GBA remakes of SNES games. It's not JUST Nintendo that do weird things, it's also the fans with weird demands. Like people complain when DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze added an easy mode. Like why was that weird or a bad thing?
It still astonishes me that A brick that displays green absolutely crushed any competition for 10+ years
And then in the late 90s and early 2000s people played snake on their mobile phones and it was regarded as a technical marvel.
@@SimchenThat's another green brick
