Vox Vs Marshall - CLEAN GUITAR TONE Shootout!

- In this video I compare the clean tones of a Vox and Marshall Amp. I'm playing both amps though the same Marshall 4x12 Speaker cabinet and both amps are tweaked to sound as similar as possible.
Gear:
1963 Vox AC30 Head
1977 Marshall JMP 2204 Head
1971 Marshall 1960A 4x12 with stock G12M25 75Hz Pulsonic Greenbacks
1960s Beyerdynamic M160 Ribbon Mic
API 512C Mic Preamp
Weber Mass 100 Attenuator with very slight attenuation.

Neither wins, obviously we all just need both
Indeed :-)
At the very least. ☇ I have been wanting to check out the AC50, EL34 tone death match ftw!
Yeah, tell that to my wife.
The creamy vox clean tone is just unbeatable, just beautiful break up!
This AC30 is full of harmonics. Love that tone!
Thanks Maxime!
The Vox sounds great, but is really far from being clean. With the LP especially, it's fairly crunchy. The Marshall stayed much cleaner and because of that and the lack of harmonics, sounds kind of flat in comparison.
Great video though. Please keep this kind of stuff coming. It's great to see Johan continuing to rock a 4x12 even in tough times.
Yeah, the vox wasn't really clean
Exactly my thoughts. Its not a very equal comparison in that sense. Those amps break up a little differently too, so hard to compare them really. Just different sounds for different applications/songs. Both are actually great but used for different purposes.
That is a good observation, the video did give a slight advantage to the VOX by giving it that edge it is famous for. However, as a jazz enthusiast, I am well aware Marshall cleans are great for jazz guitars. I would consider a Marshall clean only bested by a vintage Standel 25L15 or a Dumble (#102) clean good for jazz. But that VOX cleanish tone in this video is essentially the tone that turned the world upside down.
Never thought I'd say this , actually like the Vox better
definitely!
HE DIDN'T DIAL THE MARSHALL PROPERLY. CHECK THIS OUT

the Vox cleans are just so distinctive and sweet, although I love the 50 watt JMP in the video. My favorite cleans have come from a 2203 with 6550s. Great demo again and thank you! stay safe!
Thanks my friend, you too!
If you want great clean tones on a 6550 loaded amp you wanna run kt88's . They are essentially European 6550's and wipe the floor with 6550 tubes on clean .
As much as I adore that classic Marshall tone and character, it's not in the same league with the Vox amp. Wow!
Takk for tasty playing!
Two different animals right there! The EL84 driven Vox and the EL34 driven Marshall have very distinctive characteristics in clean tone and voice. I love them both!
Thanks David!
The vox did it for me. I’ve got an AC 15 and I really do love it. Something about vox tone that just sounds so real is the best way i can describe it. That’s awesome that you have one from the 60’s.
So great.
To me the Marshall actually sounds clean where as the Vox seems to have a little growl to it. But man that Strat into the Vox through the 4x12 is a killer combo.
I think overall I preferred the Vox but it was very close, both amps are beautiful sounding! Great playing as always 😉
Thanks Dean! I’m glad to hear that!
Because the Marshall incorporates global negative feedback in the circuit and the VOX does not, the Marshall has the "cleaner" (less distorted) output signal, guaranteed. Now, do I think the Marshall sounds better? NO, I think the VOX sounds better in this comparison. By the way Johan, which input did you use on the 2204?? The "High" or "Low" sensitivity? Great video as always, thanks!
Thanks, I use the low input on the Marshall. Cheers!
You can achieve a very clean & a far more natural tone by NOT using negative loop feedback. Either there is something wrong with that Vox amp, or it's being overloaded, or it is a poor design. It does NOT produce a clean tone. Loop feedback causes unnatural sounding transient distortion and adds harshness to the tone. Loop feedback only looks good on paper if you ignore the transient problems that it causes.
@audiosamples: "You can't stay very clean loud without neg fb." Loop feedback is a band-aid fix for people that want to skimp on components and don't take the time to get the design right. Most guitar amps have very serious design flaws, so you are usually comparing bad with not quite so bad.
@audiosamples As I said, negative loop feedback is a bandaid fix for a poor design. But without loop feedback this does require a good amplifier design, good speaker cabinet design with speaker impedance correction networks, & speaker cable with Zo that matches the Z of the speakers. The output transformers need to be critically damped with the speaker load applied to them. Not all feedbackless designs are good. Many are terrible. The trick is to obtain sufficiently low output impedance without the use of negative loop feedback.
I think clean tone comparisons are theonly true way of revealing qualities of the equipment - guitar included- thanks for another great demo Johan !
Thanks Graham!
Everyone talks about the chime of the VOX, yet to my ears the Marshall has more of a chime than I expected! Great video as always, even if I'm 2 years late.
I prefer vox. Marshall sounds dry, vox has more "juice" to my ear.
This is the jcm800 sound ... it would be very différent with a plexi superlead 1959
I think this is mainly due to compression, which is lovely in the VOX - it sounds nice full and loud when recorded. The Marshall has more power and dynamic range (it would come closer to the VOX, if it would be more cranked).
@@karliscirulis6558 I own all theses amps, Jcm800 give really this sound ( could be little more creamy with TS9 front )
5:32 shoegaze heaven! Vox has great character when clean.
Thanks, yeah for airy riffs nothing beats vox
no doubt about it!
Quite surprising. I was expecting to like the Marshall but the Vox wins hands down. Great comparison- thanks Johan!
That Strat though. What a beautiful sound!
I’m glad you have so many videos....I might have some time these days to watch most of them! Cheers!
I like the VOX mellower tone for Country and Soft Rock.
Great demo, Johan! One thing I don’t hear a lot of people talk about, and is something you really hear in your video, is how much clean sustain a Vox will give you.
I think that the VOX cabinet cloths is representative for the sound, just like the warmth and welcoming cozy 50-70's feel color aspect and the visual aspects of some old vinyl record speaker cabinet, it's emitting through sound as well. And the cloth for the marshall is representative for the marshall sound (it looks pretty dark and harsh, lifeless), it's like swedish liquorice, sometimes it's unbeatable to taste those salty candys, but you will get tired of the liquorice taste pretty fast, and it's also my feel for the marshall sound. I like rock/metal/hardcore and such, so I'm referring to the distortion first and formost. What I try to communicate is that the VOX in all it's appearence visually and with it's great warmth and also nice clean tones, but also with distortion and overdrive they sound so fantastic. I used to own the AC50, and I regret selling it. Summary, marshall in it's right dosage is sometimes unbeatable, but I lose interest fast, but the VOX tone never get tiresome.
Sounds like the vox is at the edge of overdrive, sometimes you can hear it distort. The Marshall sounds thin, it think you should turn it up a bit more.
Johan you r the man...your videos are brilliant...
I am like your brother in the USA ..we have the same passion for classic Marshall’s Vox amps
I’ve been collecting them for a long time since I have played in a lot of bands.
Right now I trimmed my amps down to 5 Marshalls , one Vox AC 15 head, one Orange TH 30 ,and 2 Fenders a Deluxe Reverb and.
Hot Rod Deville 4x10...oh and a peavey 5150. I bought 2 Ox Boxes to run through since the Covid thing we lost our -practice space
Again great playing and great comparisons...keep the videos coming..great job brother
1963 Vox AC30 Head
1977 Marshall JMP 2204 Head
1971 Marshall 1960A 4x12 with stock G12M25 75Hz Pulsonic Greenbacks
1960s Beyerdynamic M160 Ribbon Mic
OMG, I love how your gear is all vintage!
Hey Johan, it's great that you're still working hard to put out super content. Thanks man! It's also great that you're branching out to highlight the cleaner sounds our amps are capable of :) This video and the other couple showing Fender vs Marshall are excellent. How about a video comparing the Fender, Marshall, and Vox clean to edge-of-breakup tones, perhaps even throwing in Orange and HiWatt if you could wangle it? That would be an awesome show :) Stay safe and healthy!
Beautiful sounds and nice playing as always !! :) The strat and the Vox head are a wonderful pair ! THe gibson and the marshall are so iconic and has made proof of their efficiency !
The Vox sounds more 'interesting' to me. Can't really put it into words. The Marshall is actually getting clearer and cleaner tones - but there's something about the Vox. I may be a bit biased - I am a huge fan of Vox amps. I think the Vox is bringing out the mid range a bit more and that is the sound that I like. Cheers Johan! Great videos!
The only “problem“ i have with the Vox is that it isn't really clean. I mean especially with the Les Paul you can hear it distort sometimes. But, if you play the right music style, that can be perfect!
The marshall would probably sound better if you turn it up and then roll down the guitar volume
The Vox adds a crisp sparkle and presence to both guitars, while the Marshall gives each some girth. In a recording situation, I'd probably use both :).
Yeah great complements
Beautiful!!! The JPM sounds surprisingly bright to me... probably because I'm used to my JTM45 with KT66s (i.e. very thick sounding)
Thanks!
Great riffs Johan. I like your JMP. I picked up an '85 JCM800 2204 a few weeks ago and have used it almost every day since. Still have my 100w vintage modern too.
So... The Vox is not always the brightest amp! It depends on the (non top boost - B N or T) version or the top boost itself. But it's one of the most balanced tones i've ever heard and had until today which I still use in head + cabinet format.
Extremely useful, like all of you videos!! Thank you Johan!
I'm a huge fan of vintage Marshalls, but, the Vox won this time!
The best clean/raspy/smooth crunch tone I've ever heard!!
Cheers from Brazil🇧🇷🖐
3:59 since I been loving you tones. Nice video Johan like always
Marshall has a thinner cut to its sound. Vox is chewier. Both good.
Thanks, yeah they would complement each other well in a mix
Exceptionally well done. Standard usefulness for a Segeborn piece.
Funny how the Tom Petty riffs sound better on the Vox! Great video as always Johan, thanks.
Marshall sounds like the Vox with COVID-19
Inappropriate says an Italian
Exactly, sounds like Vox with nose congested 😂
Nice playing as usual! I like the Vox with the Les Paul.
There are good and bad examples of all the great amps, but that Vox is very special.
One is hand wired, one is PC, one has a tube rectifier, one has a solid state rectifier, the box reminds me of beggars banquet outtakes, both are tasty in there own way , perhaps my mind is biased , good stuff from you is always guaranteed though, unique in the RUclips guitar world for sure
Both just beautiful. I say that as a big Vox / Orange enthusiast, but Marshall sounded superb here. Great comparison. They would both do veeeerrry nicely thank you.
And - Vox thru' Marshall cab - mmmm-mmm! Ritchie B knew something about that back in the day :)
Yeah, I love Ritchies tone
Damn I love both tones, also love the three dog night!
Thanks David! Glad to hear it
If you prefer compression/smoothness over punch go Vox.Punch but stiffer is the Marshall.EQ profile differs a bit as well.
I tend to like more the Vox, it sounded to me fuller and more "open", while the Marshall sounded to me thinner and kind of "boxy". That song that you've played was "Handle With Care" by the Travelling Wilburys?
The Vox sound is simply magnificent.
I have a 1965 Vox Super Twin and its just almost impossible to get a bad sound out of them. Owning both you have 98% of every style covered.
Yeah these cover a lot of ground
Sounds like the Marshall is perceived bit louder or is punchier. In my opinion Marshalls bring the hum buckers of Gibsons to life, and Vox is so smooth and nice to the ear with single coils, particularly Telecasters.
I actually think a better test might have been a AC30 vs. a Plexi
the lighting, the playing, the tones! mmm mmm mmm
A Vox AC30 TB is truly THE Desert Island amp. It can do anything and everything. They are a bit quirky and it takes some time to get to know them. When you do, the rewards are huge. If you want a tighter sound, up the filtering. Harder rock? A 4x12 is your best friend. Classic AC30- AlNiCo Blues. I have 4 of them and am always looking for more.
Loving the edge of break up Johan,2 great amps, stay safe and keep healthy mate \mj/
Hell yeah 🎸🎶👊✌
This reminded me why I never got on with Marshalls; no low mids or bottom end in the clean tone. Vox clean tone is great. Its not just a matter of tubes though as the AC50 also sounds great and uses EL34s too. Having said that, I have a Marshall 50 watt clone I put EL84s in with yellow jackets and it sounds awesome!
Marshall sounds more gripping to me, vox is great also!
Thanks!
are there the stock humbuckers in the les paul? sounds incredible with the vox. ac30 clearly wins this. thanks again for another great video. :o)
Hi Johan,
Great video ! As always.
I love Marshall clean sound.
Usually i’m not into Vox. But your playing, especially with the Les Paul... i liked it.
Between all the great amps you played what was the Marshall clean sound you prefer ? 64 JTM45 ? Kossof’s Super bass ? A black flag ?
I’m about to purchase some vintage gear and a Strat and a Marshall are definitivly on the top of my list. Any advices ?
Keep on doing great video !
Cheers from France.
How would that 60s ac30 head sound compared to the stock ac30s you get today?
Vox is less "plucky". A noticeable amount less pick attack/dynamic but very musical and...smooth. I notice the same difference between my AC15 and 18w Watkins inspired amp. Vox all day for me...
We clearly ear the difference, thank you so much.
Fascinating video. The Vox sounds so much fuller then the Marshall. Don't get me wrong. ..love those old mid 70's Marshall heads..but for clean and semi dirty..that Vox was better...
Now is it that specific Vox head that sounds that good? Or will it change ..amp to amp.
Thanks to you I got 2 mint 1968 pulsonic G12M's that I paid a fortune for but, it really makes all the difference. Also love the M160, do you find that's a good all around mic?
Thanks, yeah it’s great for most applications
Please take care with this wonderful 2204!!! The one and only...
Please, please, please johan sv20h....
Vox is simply unbeatable in this territory... It's chime is much nicer to my ears, either with humbuckers or single coils. Well done Johan!
Preferred the Vox, but then I am a fanboy! I really get the most from my AC15 clean. I use it as my Acoustic amp. They were built for it. Since the Master volume started being included on amps, it really has given us more to play with. Fishman Neo/rare earth magnetic acoustic pickups kill the feedback dead. I had toyed with having to sell it, buy a real acoustic amp. Its such a great acoustic sound that i have kept it. Thanks for the video again Johan! Peace out!
Definitely the vox! Has such a fuller tone & that chime
I love the iconic sound of the vox ac30's.
Love the Vox !
Vox by far. I liked the Marshall better than the Fender mostly on the other video, but the Vox is way better here.
Great video as always, lots of inspiration. Tonight I will hang my guitars in the living room, over the family paintings, and then see what happens ...
Hahaha! Good luck ;-) I’m indeed a spoiled bastard :-)
With these two particular amps the Marshall IMO makes a better clean platform for dirt pedals while the Vox is more plug & play. Drive the Vox a bit harder when desired with a boost or light OD pedal and you’re good to go. More options with the Marshall if you’re into OD/Distortion/Fuzz. Not that you can’t use those pedals with the Vox, but it gives you a more characterful sound to start with while the Marshall is comparatively more neutral.
Marshall stayed cleaner where the vox has more of that edge of break up. Both sounds great, just depends on what ya want to do. I'll take both.
Both sound great.
Sounded like a Traveling Wilburys riff from Handle with Care a few times.
@johansegeborn great video man what would you recommend that sounds like a jbl d120f that is available now
The Vox sounds awesome. Definition of what has come to be the 'idie' sound.
Definitely prefer the Vox when it comes to the clean and pushed clean tones. But, styles could dictate otherwise. The only answer is indeed to run both! :)
Vox sounds better playing clean for sure. Love that chime. In a perfect world? AC 30 and a 50 watt plexi through a A/B switch for classic rock
marshall clean tone is when you roll off the guitar volume knob on your main gain sound (for me)
Yeah that’s certainly a nice definition of it
Love it Johan!
Both are amazing
I have a Vox AC15CH Real Nice amp. Ordered the Marshall DSL20HR for the extra control over Bass Mid Etc. (In both modes) and the good posted reviews. Vox AC15CH can only be adjusted in the Boost mode and I find it difficult at time to achieve the sound I'm after. I basically play clean so not sure what I will gain with Marshall if anything. Hopefully the Marshall will outshine the Vox for me at times but if it doesn't it will at least serve to validate Vox is my best choice. If you don't try something different you'll never know if you missing out on something.
I am a Vox fan and certainly liked it more here, though crunchy, not really clean dialed.... BUT... I am aware of how GOOD CLEANS a Marshall can deliver, so I get the feeling this shootout definitely does not make the Marshall justice.
Loved them both
Great stuff
Vox amps always amaze me when paired with a Strat, they don't work particularly well with Les Pauls tho in my opinion.
That Vox sounds nice...really nice on cleans. I'm sure you could get the Marshall to sound similar playing with the EQ Johan.
I actually almost always prefer Marshall cleans to fender clean or Vox cleans, but in this video the way things are eq'd I have to say the Vox sounded better to me, so 3D and big but with Rich harmonic content
Thanks Chance
Johan, these comparisons would be made so much better by adding a stereo combination, not for any other reason than who else will do it for us!?
I am split on this 1. I thought the LP sounded better with the Marshall and the Strat, better with the Vox!
Go figure!
Good job Johan!
The Vox kick's ass with the mocha Stratocaster! And the Lester sounds great 😄
Hi, Johan!
For me Vox is good for LP, but Strat is Marshall's guy!:-) See you! No worries, internet connection is well!
Zigfrid
See you Friday Zigfrid! Cheers!
Both great tones but the vox sounded best to my ears...creamier, great comparison 👍
That AC 30 wins by a good margin with both guitars, at least for me. Thanks for the wecome diversion Johan.
Clearly the vox as that is its strength.
I do (believe it or not) think the cheaper dsl100 would of gave it a better run for clean tones.
Vox AC 30 wins every time. BTW I have the same ‘63 AC30 head. It’s amazing.
Top boost model? Which channel is being used on the Vox? Great stuff
Thanks, yeah it’s got a retro fitted top boost. I use the brilliant channel.
I thought I was going to prefer the Marshall but through that cab I preferred the warmth of the Vox
Loving the Vox!
Strat is radiating at 3:16 lmaooo
Hey Johan you seem like a very knowledgeable guy and I wanted to ask you a question: I recently got a ‘69 Super Lead (my first amp ever) and just yesterday I bought a cab for it (a 1960BV from 2003), I also bought a Hot Plate Attenuator so I can use it at home. The problem is my amp gets TOO HOOOT!! my living room smelled like a mix of burnt metal and wood. I use my attenuator close to the - (infinity) setting on the knob on the right on the front of the attenuator. I was looking up some information online and apparently people have issues with their Super Leads when they attenuate it too much. Have you had any experience with this yourself? Could “over-attenuation” be the issue as to why my amp is getting too hot?
