  • Once you start seeing the Christian themes in Death Note, it changes the entire experience. These are some of the main points I noticed (though this is only scratching the surface). As always, there's no right or wrong way to interpret fiction, so your opinion is just as valid. Lemme know what I missed!

While watching the show, I couldn't help but notice the significance of the apples. I believe they symbolize Light's fall, just like the in the Garden of Eden; and in both cases, the apple is metaphorical. Not only this, Ryuk, who tempts Light with the Deathnote, is so incredibly obsessed with apples. Lastly, in the beginning of the series, just after Light decides he is a god and he will reshape the world, no matter the cost, Light's mother brings a basket of apples into his room, which the camera focuses on for just enough time that the audience can recognize its significance, although not necessarily at the time. It was only as the series progressed and after watching these scenes over countless times that I realized just how in depth this metaphor is.

The pronunciation of L (i.e "El") meaning God is so damn cool even if it's just a coincidence

That makes a lot sense actually! When you meet Death Note you often wonder "Why is he L? There are 25 other letters, including A as the ultimate beginning" But with L=El=God and christianity parallels all pieces are put into place.

The obvious clue is also seen from the intro itself, where lighting plays a crucial role embedding the characters traits and how thier perceived. The light of the Trinity, which suffuses the mind in the highest forms of prayer, is sapphire blue, the colour of heaven which is seen inferred with the character called ‘L’. alternatively the mc of the plot ‘Light’ is seen potrayed in red light which gives the viewers early impression of how he’s accociated with evil doings and hell, foreshadowing thier characterstic traits.

I disagree with you about L.
L is not a Christ figure, if anything he is another fallen angel. L, just as Light, uses several questionable methods, even torture, and him himself says that he is a monster (a monster that lie). L's honesty is nothing but a tool as well, since he needed to gain their trust after Light's plan to weaken their relationship, using selective information and disinformation (like whem he said that Light is his friend) to keep their trust while keeping to himself most of the agency.
L is the god of the old world. Before Light came his method and his will were the rule, he could investigate whatever he wanted and had a free pass to do it as he pleased as the international and national polices would bow down to him. Light comes and breaks it, he becomes the god of the new world and takes from L the power he initially had (even forcing him to reveal himself) while simultaneously giving L the greatest challenge of his life...
L liked this challenge, just as Light did, he often said himself that he wanted Light to be Kira, because he saw him as his perfect foe and was deep down thrilled by their game. L himself said, he is childish and hates to lose, both of them are more similar than they seem to be and both want power, not simply to have but to feel that they have, that they have won the game and defeated the other one, and their desire to win at any cost is, in the end, their greatest motivation.
This is why both are fallen angels, both begin as good people (Light without the memories of the Deathnote was a very decent person), both begin with good intentions to create justice... But both slowly fall from grace as they use more and more ruthless methods to win and become, both, drunk with power and the desire to prove that they are the best.
Deathnote is a story of corruption by power, both Light and L are satanic figures. L looks like a Christ figure for the same reason that Light looks like a good person... Both want to deceive, the only difference is that Light deceives the other characters, and L the audience.

I'm glad you briefly hinted at the gandalf the white connection because I literally was thinking of that right before xD Expanding on what you mentioned about Near and Mello perhaps they represent Christ's 2 natures in Christian theology: Divine and Human? After all Near is the more calm and calculated while Mello is the more "human" and emotional character and also dies(representing human mortality). I loved this video though, really interesting and cool!

I'd argue that Jesus was not evil but if a character is based on Jesus Christ they can be evil especially considering that the author lives in a country where Christianity is a minority. I'd argue that we benefit from these considering the anti christ will allegedly try to sell himself as "son of god"

True, but all the Old Testament figures are types of Christ who had their fallings and shortcomings. In the commentary, L is a type of Christ, the type of Christ who brings true justice (even if L himself in the story doesn’t embody “true justice”)

I don’t want to be a dick but the concept Lucifer predates the Bible and is indeed a Christ figure…. The biblical/western depiction of Lucifer is controversial to say the least and shouldn’t be considered a normative depiction of him. He’s the very definition of a proto messianic character.

True…though I can see it in the sense that L sees the world as it is, and that includes himself. L sees truth; the difference is Christ had no sin but L did so he accepted that about himself and others.

      Forgot to mention something:
Isnt there a parallelism in between this work and Faust of Goethe?
Faust is an old wise/genius yet is tired of the world so he exchanges his soul to a demon in order to live a life full of pleasures and knowledge.
He is always accompanied by mephistopheles (a literal satiric demon who plays ironical tricks) and in the end decides to build his own perfect world

I have a less Christian view. Maybe because I don't believe in the bible. Now to Death Note:
Light has a Messiah-Complex at the beginning, which turned pretty fast into a god complex. The Death Notes can be easily explained by a quote of Ryuk in the first episode: "When it's your time to die, I will write your name in my death note." So he openly states that he is more powerful than Light. Another quote would be against a christian interpretation: "When you die, you will neither go to heaven, nor hell, but to nothingness." Ryuk doesn't lie, because he dropped the DN out of entertainment and doesn't take a side. He was never Lights ally nor enemy. He only helped him, when Light gave him apples. What is this nothingness? Well probably the Shinigami realm. While this is unclear, one thing is certain: Nothingness is neither good nor evil. So at the end, it doesn't matter, how you use the Death Note, because death is equal for all Death Note users. So, if there is no heaven or hell - we only see the Shinigami realm and Earth and the Shinigamis seem to be neutral, because they don't really care about the human world at all. Ryuk: "We mostly play in our realm and if the others see you writing down the names of humans, they laugh at you."
Misa had complexes of inferiority. With the murderer of her parents killed, her complexes are healed. This can easily turn into obsession, because you only feel "normal" because of the other person, in DNs case Kira. If your psychical health depends on one person, it's never gonna be good.
Mikami was the opinion that Light was right, because of his childhood.
L is not Jesus. He tortured Misa and didn't stopped the torture, even after she had given up her memory. L didn't know about the Death Note, he didn't know that you can give up ownership, he only knew, that one Kira can kill with a name and a face and the second one only with a face. After Misa loosing her memories and later Light, he had no clues. He was back to square one and got depressed, because he couldn't prove that Light is Kira. He says: "Now that you mention it; yes, I wanted you to be Kira." This is not the attitude of Jesus. The Task Force is also stupid af. After they left Ls funeral Light starts laughing out loud and nobody hears that? Nobody waited somewhere for Light? They were so far away, when Light started laughing, that noone thinks that Light behaves odd?
Furthermore Nears plan couldn't even work, if we are real. Gevanni alone managed it somehow to achieve something, what normally would take about 30 h in 18? That is impossible. He needed to write around 27.000 names in 18 h, while taking into account, that Mikami checks the Notebook under a microscope.
I am not a Kira supporter, but that ending wouldn't held up under scrutiny at all.
So, I stop here, because I wrote more than enough of my opinion.

While you gave a cool idea I had never thought about before I do not like how obvious it is that you're on L's side, maybe even religious yourself. Of course discussing things such as good and evil will always end rough, since It's quite hard to change one's mind on this topic. Everybody has a different opinions of the show. but I heard most would have been satisfied if the second season was omitted, as L's death was a satisfying end to the story. It is also true that a lot of people who like themes like Death Note and a villain as the mc are probably more inclined to like more gruesome things and believe in a more unconventional good and bad (like Light).
You started on a neutral tone and then went into your actual opinion, which is not necessarily bad, I just didn't expect that, especially since most are kind of on Light's side (while still accepting that he's evil and bad).

I feel like L could be more or a criticism of Christ. L is not very interested in justice, he plays into that rivalry because just like Light, he believes this is a game to be won. He is morally grey because his desires to help people are based on how interesting the case is to him

    • @divoulos5758
      @divoulos5758 Месяц назад

That's not necessarily ego. He can be taking on cases he is interested in because he is needed. In cases were more conventional detectives can do the job just fine, getting L is overkill from whatever angle you see it. Were you expecting L to have an investigation about someone who stole cabbages? Not to mention that getting involved here and there could make him easier to track and kill by high level criminals. And using your skills in a way that interests you is not antichristian, and in the bible it's mentioned that you should grow the talents that you have been given and not to remain inactive

  • @CodeineCoffee
    @CodeineCoffee 5 месяцев назад +2

I agree that Biblical symbolism is all over the place in Death Note, and reading the story in this way makes sense, but it's somewhat undercut by the fact that Light's plan was working up until his death. If he can be trusted with his statistics at the end, which aren't refuted in the show, then he reduced global crime by over 70% and stopped wars. By those statistics, he would have prevented more deaths in a single month than he had caused throughout his entire killing career, not to mention the prevention of other criminal injustices that would get my comment flagged if I mentioned them. Negative views of Light's plan rely a lot on him being a terrible person, which he definitely was, and require a sort of "if a tree falls in the forest" kind of reading to the story, where significant importance is placed on what we see in the story, but not the world as a whole. Light was a psychopathic egomaniac, but his efforts, as far as we're led to believe by the show, made the world a much better place by fighting against evils that we all see as an affront to God, so the idea that he is Lucifer doesn't hold up completely in the context of the story. If he had been allowed to go on with his plan for longer, he might have reversed this effect, as he does mention something about not killing lazy people "yet" when Mikami was in charge of the death note, but we don't see him do that in the story. This isn't an argument for a real person being able to do any of this, though, as Light was given the power of a God of Death: the ability to exact justice with perfect precision from any distance at any time, with "divine" guarantee of no collateral damage, which is an impossible power for men to achieve. From my point of view, Death Note is a story of not only how men can succumb to corrupting influences, but also, in a meta-way, a story about the power of well-constructed narratives to drive people's opinions in a desired direction, as if the story had focused on the perspective of other people in the world, maybe a solder fighting a pointless war that was ended by Kira's influence, and largely ignored Light and his personal failings, then the tone would be completely different, and Light would be the hero. I can also read the story as being about the necessary nature of corruption in our world, where solving the problems caused by evil requires a consolidation of power into one individual or entity, which will necessarily corrupt them with evil, in this case on a massive scale. Having said all of that, great video! It got me to think about this story a lot deeper.

    • @KylieMalchusArt
      @KylieMalchusArt  5 месяцев назад +1

You make some great, thought-provoking points! And it's led me to believe my view might require some additional explanation.
The first important point is that the ends don't justify the means. Murdering one innocent to save a hundred is never a valid trade. A wise Rabbi once said (paraphrasing), "One soul is worth as much as a million souls, for both have infinite worth."
Secondly, as you already alluded to, improving the lives of others was never one of Light's explicit motivations. Whenever he spoke of his goals, he said he wanted to eliminate anyone who was not "good, hardworking, and honest," but never for the world's benefit. His clearly-stated motivation was to be exalted as "the god of the new world." As you said, he was a psychopathic egomaniac, and his desire was control and power. He never once showed real empathy toward anyone in pain (with the possible exception of his dad). So I believe any suffering he alleviated in the process was incidental at best to him.
Still, I understand the argument that despite his murderous means and his selfish motives, his actions benefited the world in some tangible ways. But Light still works well as a Satan archetype for several reasons (many of which are already outlined in the video). That being said, the difference in my thought process likely comes from my somewhat unique beliefs about Lucifer.
I didn't include this in the video because I wanted to keep the content broad enough to apply to *every* Christian, but it's probably worthwhile to explain this here.
In my particular denomination, we believe in some extra-biblical scriptures (in addition to the bible) that help shed light on many things, including Satan and his motives.
Before the world was created, Lucifer, being an important angel, presented a plan to God that would save every soul without exception, guaranteeing us all a place in heaven. Sin would be non-existent.
That sounds great on the surface, but in order to accomplish that feat, humanity could not be granted free will. Lucifer also demanded that he receive "all the glory" for saving mankind. He wanted to become god.
God rejected Lucifer's plan, because it would negate the entire purpose of us living a mortal life to begin with, which is to learn through making choices and mistakes. God's rejection triggered Lucifer's anger, and that's what sparked the war in heaven mentioned in the book of Revelation. Lucifer fought against God, lost, and was cast out of heaven. From that point on, he became the devil we all know, vengefully attempting to pull everyone down to hell with him.
So while some may sympathize with Lucifer's initial desire to create a perfectly-controlled utopia, his primary sins were at least two-fold:
      1) Pride. He believed he could do things better than God, and therefore, tried to usurp Him.
      2) Tyranny. Lucifer placed a higher value on supposed "safety" than free will. God, on the other hand, favors our ability to choose right and wrong for ourselves, despite the risks associated with that freedom.
Both of Lucifer's primary sins describe Light to a T. He believed he was smart enough to control the world, he wanted all the glory, and he was perfectly okay with abolishing freedom of choice in the process (except from himself, of course).
I realize not every Christian from every denomination has these exact beliefs about Satan, so this may not resonate. Even so, Satan's pride and tyrannical desires can be found throughout the Bible. It can't be denied that the end goal of all Satan's actions involves spiritual captivity (a lack of freedom) and a submission to him over God. That sounds like Light to me.
Anyway, thanks for watching the video! I appreciate your intelligent and respectful comment. Have a wonderful day 🙂

Light Yagami may have wielded the power of a Death Note, but he would have a lot to learn before he had any business calling himself a god; nowhere is that more evident than in how poorly he handled the Lind L. Tailor incident. You never, EVER, allow someone to goad you that easily; it's shameful enough when you're a mortal man, and that disgrace is a thousand fold worse when you presume to call yourself a deity.

The anime censored a lot of the religious aspects so I recommend the manga for religious interpretations
    Examples of censorship:
Mello wears a cross and has cross earrings in manga
An actual church scene with a huge crucifix happened in the manga with Light
Kira followers are showing displaying crosses, really hammering that Light is a Christ figure
Misa wears crosses way more often alongside casket shaped stuff

Fun fact! Some Hebrew speakers did in fact realize L sounds like our word for god, so they made a joke with the scene where L reveals himself to Light. L says "I'm L", but that sounds like "I'm god", so Light stands up dramatically and starts monologuing "No, I'm El! I am the god of this new world! I will bring order to the world! I will commence a new era! And uh..!" and then he sits back down.

When it comes to L v. Kira, Kira won in the end. Light managed to create a new god that would be worshiped even in his death. No one save for the task force knew of his identity as Kira and Kira the god would continue on. And so would L. Thus the cycle continues. In the words of the Joker, “I think you and I are destined to do this forever.”

Instead of using the persona of "L" as another disciple, it would be better to use his alternative detective persona, Eraldo Coil. Great video. My favorite anime.

Death Note is a story that I both Love and Hate.
On the one hand, it has an excellent premise that hooks you in from the start, features an engaging (at times intense) intellectual rivalry (something I'd like to see more often in entertainment), as well as (as you've kindly pointed out) plenty of meaningful symbolism.
On the other hand, the pacing was off after a quarter of the way through the story (when Misa got taken) and the ending disappointed me, not for the reason most fans were disappointed. I would have been fine with the story as it was, I almost considered this Anime a masterpiece but the last bit of worldbuilding completely ruined the whole story. This worldview has nihilistic implications to the world of Death Note that completely undermines all the themes of Justice and even the motivation to try to take over the world.
The worldbuilding concerns the concept of 'Mu' aka nothingness. In Death Note, when someone dies, they go to Nothingness.
So regardless if it were L trying to stop Light Yagami or Light Yagami trying to stop all crime, all these motivations that engaged us in the story are suddenly meaningless.
I really don't like Nihilistic endings because if the story claims everything was meaningless, then what was the point in telling the story in the first place?
So much for not sticking to a core Philosophy as you've kindly pointed out, because not thinking these implications through leads to contradictions which disengage the viewer from the entertainment.
Of course, your entitled to your opinion and I'm grateful God has enabled you to carry out the implications of Acts 17. Finding similar Truth and Beauty and pointing it out.
Please keep that up. This platform will need insightful people like you.
    Holy Trinity be with you.

You seem to have misunderstood something that I hope to clear up. 'Mu' in Zen is not synonymous with nothingness; rather, it represents a non-answer. For instance, if someone were to ask a Zen Buddhist if a dog could attain enlightenment, the correct response wouldn't be a simple yes or no; it would be 'mu' because the question itself is deemed invalid. Similarly, if a Buddhist monk were asked if he stopped tickling his wife, the answer wouldn't be a straightforward 'no' due to celibacy, and it wouldn't be 'yes' because he has never engaged in such an activity or had the capacity to do so. Therefore, when the show states that the place they go to after death is 'mu,' it's not naming a place they enter, as the question has already presupposed a location; instead, it denies the existence of such a place altogether. The notion that 'all these motivations in the story are suddenly meaningless' is, in fact, the silliest take I've ever heard. If anything, it's the exact opposite. It makes all of their actions in the story way more meaningful.

      @@munen343 Thank you for clarifying.
I'd like to ask you some questions regarding what you've said.
      1. in Death Note, Ryuk said theirs's no Heaven or Hell. Was he too responding with invalidation or was he lying? This plot point is further emphasised in the manga which seems to give Light Yagami a cockiness in feeling like he can get away with anything.
      2. If what you say is true, have official wiki's for Death Note misunderstood Mu?
      3. Can you please clarify on how denying the possibility of an afterlife makes this story meaningful?
      4. More of a speculative question yet, in the Anime adaptation, did Light see L's Ghost or was that a hallucination from Light's Sub-Consciousness?

    • @KylieMalchusArt
      @KylieMalchusArt  8 месяцев назад +3

I agree with you! I dislike nihilistic endings too. This is one of the main reasons I preferred the anime ending. In the manga, Ryuk says *all* humans will end up in the same state of nothingness. The anime omits that line, allowing us to believe that only users of the Death Note will suffer that fate. So I like to believe that eternal nothingness for all doesn't apply in the anime world of Death Note. Otherwise, you're right, it would kind of make the whole story meaningless.
Anyway, thanks for your kind and thought-provoking comment! God bless 🙏

It's interesting that you would Call Light L's Adversary, as the name Satan means Adversary. Light's Eyes were Red when He was found out.

... i do like people making videos about death note and all, but il have to disagree, light isnt exectly evil, i mean yes killing people is bad and all but think big picture all hes trying to do is make the world a better place. now is he doing it the worng way? Yea ofc he is. but in the end he is just acting like "god"

@@shahardel90 Good being capable of coming from evil doesn't make evil itself good. Sure, there were positive effects from Light's actions, but the ends don't justify the means, nor does that change Light's standing as an evil doer. Light may not be the Adversary (Satan) but he surely operated in the the Adversary's character via his pride. His pride was perfectly displayed the moment he took it upon himself to bring justice to criminals despite that not being his office of authority; he's a usurper.

That is a good point but il have to disagree good coming from evil is still good just depends on how far you takw it, take the episodes where light gives up the death note he says that if he was kira he wouldnt kill people who killed in self defence or people who didnt mean to kill unlike the current kira
Yes he did kill some inncoents people and i underatand where ur coming from that the ends dont justify the means but for that i have 1 example from real life crimnals who testify agisant other crimnals and get immunity @dazaiel8081

You have already heard this before... L is in no way Christ figure.
L and light are two sides of the same coin.
L wants to bring justice, or what he sees as justice based on his self admitted childish desire to have things his way.
He doesn't solve cases because it is right, he solves them because they interest him to solve them.
Not to mention L tortured Misa. Not even any remorse.
I mean yeah, you could argue torturing Misa wasn't the worst because there is no way public would believe the supernatural killing and their best bet would be solving the case under the rug, but still...

This is a nice look into symbolism. Off the top of my head, something I think might be missed by locking yourself into this "Light is evil" reading (and you are absolutely not getting the whole picture of Death Note if you can't read Light as the hero):
There's a lot of Light = Jesus stuff. The Light/Kira duality I think parallels the Man/God duality of Jesus. He is at once fully Light and fully Kira. Furthermore, he plans and navigates his own death in a sense when he gives up his memories of the Death Note. Also, after L dies, there's a 3 year time skip, which you could say mimics the 3 years of Jesus' ministry.
