Finally got a chance to watch! It's been awesome seeing this video come together. You already know my thoughts on the script but I'll say here that I really love the connection you draw to Marcel. I hope you make more videos!
I do think Ymir is an underrated character, the fanbase and the story itself kinda seems to forget about her, but as u show in this video she actually had a beautiful story
Glad you enjoyed the video! This story truly has so many layers, a testament to how powerful good art can be in helping us understand deeper questions about life
She was always one of my favorite characters and it does feel like after her sacrifice it's like oh whatever, she's gone. The last episode she shows up and it's like oh yeah, her...but I just loved her character. She seems so bad but she's not, beautiful story arc.
It certainly can feel that way for her character, but even that is an example of the humility of her sacrifice. Without her selfless decision to give the jaw back to Marley the story would not be the same, and yet she offers her life to save Reiner and Bertholt for their own sake despite it destroying her future in the world. There’s no strategy or benefit on her end, nor any glory in the story for it, just a pure act of radical unconditional love
Wow this was excellently explained and made me see Ymir in a different light. I never quite understood her intentions but now that you've explained it this way, i totally get it. Incredible! Please do more of thesee analyses, they're great!
Wow another wonderful video! I just watched this and you have my head spinning with so many intriguing and beautiful ideas so I'm going to sleep on it before expounding my thoughts. However, very quick, I think you are correct and Isayama consciously meant much of what you discuss. The proof is that only after her entire arc and redemption, she is the first person to reach and the first time we see The Paths....all the way back in season 2!
Damn... That was a really interesting video... Good job! She really is a very underrated character (even tho i think that she leaves a huge impact considering her reduced amount of screentime) I really can't describe how amazing her character arc is, since it's easy to overlook at it, simply because she chooses to not remark it to anyone, she just does what she thinks it's best for others... Clearly one of the purest characters without any doubts...
I do feel like a lot of people forgot about her I still wonder why Isayama had two character named Ymir 3:41 I also wonder why the other Ymir stayed with King Fritz and I think it is similar to what you are talking about 3:53 I feel that is the same reason why the other Ymir stayed with King Fritz, because it was the first connection she ever felt.
Personally I believe some things were simply retconed! Characters such as historia and Ymir, and the underground city where Levi was raise at. He has confirmed that he changed the ending because aot became too popular, so take that with a grain of salt
@@terrellwilliams6737 When it became popular after season 1 blew up he said that he might end up changing the ending, but afterwards he decided to actually stay with the original ending he had.
Gonna have to give this a 2nd watch to really digest everything as I hadn't even thought of this point of view for Ymir and gave me some context to reflect on in regards to my own life. Good video in terms of presentation, editing and so on. I'd just invest in improving the mic quality a bit (it kind of sounds like a webcam mic), it's fine and I doubt the average person cares, but I think if you polish it further your channel should grow in time since the content itself still carried the video for me.
Thank you for watching and it’s awesome to hear the message and angle is giving you room to reflect both on the show and your own life. For the mic issue, I actually am having issues with my voice right now (recently had vocal cord surgery) and so I had a friend do the audio. In time if I do future videos I’d want to for sure have better audio to help improve the experience for everyone. I’d also recommend you check out Bishop Barron or Jordan Peterson’s Genesis lectures if you want to further explore the theology in a deeper way. Peace!
@@taken4granted612 sorry for the late reply. And that really is a deeply interesting relationship. More so with how the final ended/changed between manga and anime. I'd 100% watch that.
I disagree that Ymir and Attack on Titan have good parallels with Jesus and Christianity. There’s not a lot of things that they agree on. One of the few things I know the 2 agree is on that no human is good (with the exception of Jesus of course because he’s God incarnate). I also suppose both teach the value of self sacrifice (albeit Attack on Titan has a twisted way of presenting it). But as I said the comparisons are rather scarce.
It's not Christianity, it's just compassion. You can find similar messages in nearly every religion, so your analysis seems limited by taking a very specific angle. Otherwise good video!
Thank you for watching and for your comment! I chose to make it Christian-specific for a theological reason and scripting reason. For the script, even though there may be perennial elements of compassion found in other religions, using the focal point of one religion with its specific story and parallels to Ymir does a better job of getting the point across than trying to juggle multiple religions at once in one video, or making a super general video about why Ymir is nice and compassionate which would be stale. From the theological perspective I’d argue other religions simply don’t compare in regards to the extent they center themselves on compassion. Christianity’s stake on the belief that God is love is radical - creation stories in antiquity pretty much always had the world created through violence among gods or sexual domination/manipulation. Genesis stands out as a story of pure creation, a monotheistic God making the world not out of violence or domination but out of abundance. From there Jesus takes an even more radical approach by announcing himself as the Son of God. The Buddha or Mohammed might say they are showing people the way to God, but Christ asserts he’s the way himself. Why that matters to this video is because if you surrender to the fact that Jesus truly is divine, the next step would be to acknowledge that his life on earth reveals the core patterns of existential reality and his teachings are the ultimate path to liberate oneself from the cycle of hatred - which is done by denying yourself and running towards suffering for the sake of others out of love. It’s clear to me that Ymir follows that archetype profoundly. Further, beyond just being loving, she and Marcel uniquely portray the redemptive aspect of sacrifice found most prominently in Christianity among other religions. Hope that helps explain my perspective to why I made the video this way, and I really appreciate your feedback!
@@taken4granted612 I feel like you can't see forest beyond the tree. Things "Redemptive aspect of sacrifice" and breaking the hatred by taking suffering of others onto yourself out of love is important ideas in Christianity, but same cold be said about their role in many other religions and philosophies. Because at its core love and compassion were with us for as long as hatred and fear were. I'd wager that since AoT is made by Japanese author, he is more likely to be influenced by buddhist ideas on this topic. But sadly i suspect (from your comment) that you aren't much aware of teachings of other religions.
@@konstantinriumin2657 While I understand where you are coming from, I don't think the creator of this video is necessarily claiming that Isayama took inspiration from Christianity specifically, but rather there are some interesting parallels to be made that most wouldn't have considered. From what I can understand from the previous reply, I think the "redemptive aspect of sacrifice" is supposed to have a larger emphasis in Christianity because Jesus is recognized as God; meaning that if God is self-sufficient without people, then His sacrifice is truly selfless and out of love. However, I do really like your point that compassion can be seen across many religions, and respect/acknowledgement is due to those beliefs for their impact on society. So thank you for bringing that up! Both of you have great points!
