The problem with the album "When You're a Boy" is precisely what she said. It was too "Banglish". Songs that would have been performed with the Bangles. Susanna even worked with David Kahne, who produced the album "Different Light". Big mistake in my opinion. "My Side of the Bed" was written by Susanna, Billy Steinberg, and Tom Kelly, the trio that wrote "In Your Room" and "Eternal Flame", both Bangle hits. Bangle fans were disappointed by the breakup and that brings lack of interest for Susanna's solo career. Had she continued with the Bangles and done solo projects parallel to that, she might have done better. Her albums "Susanna Hoffs" (1996) and "Someday" (2012) show a music totally different and characteristic of Susanna as a solo artist, not Banglish, and the result were better albums, even though they weren't mainstream hits. In my opinion, Susanna with the Bangles have a certain sound. Susanna solo has a different flavor. I love both.
For me, there is no problem with this album. It's been one of my favorite albums of all time since I first bought the cassette in a tiny and empty music shop in Poland in 1993, being 14 y.o. Btw. It was next to impossible to find this album in Poland, as back then we were not very much in sync with what was going on in the music worldwide, apart from the biggest stars. I guess most people heard Eternal Flame but few knew the name of the Band and only a few of these few were aware that Susanna Hoffs is a member of The Bangles.
