There’s two meanings to this song: 1: Corey is telling people who don’t like him that they can come fight him if they want to but nothing they can do to him will remove the truth from his words (the “cut, cut, cut me up” part) 2: malicious people who seek to destroy others for their own self interest will never be pitted by history (and they will be remembered by everyone as evil) (the “last man standing gets no pity” part) The songs name is a reference to “Custer’s Last Stand” [aka The Battle of Little Bighorn]. It’s a long story but essentially Custer was a leader in the newly formed American army and participated in the war against the native peoples that happened after the Civil War. His “Last Stand” was the battle where he, along with most of his men, were finally killed (which was a major turning point in the war). Today he is mostly remembered as a coward and a failure. All this is related to the second meaning of the song. This is my favorite Slipknot song (if you couldn’t tell).

When you were wondering what that noise was in the background of the vocals, you could be hearing the sound fx that Sid does during their songs sometimes. Also, during this time, Corey was quitting smoking so that could be what you hear too.
You are on the right track with live shows. I’ve seen them 5 times and it is like nothing else. It is such a high that lasts for days. The sound is incredible (you can’t hear for at least 24 hours after though), the stage presence and energy are like none other. I will say it’s crazy because the crowd makes such a difference too. It’s like they are in this amazing experience with you and they are all your new best friends. I never had a bad experience at a show. It was really a great, respectful thing. You really have to make a point to see them live when shows start back.

I’ve seen Slipknot 7 times since my first show in August 2001. Two weeks before IOWA came out. I met Clown abs Joey very briefly that day. Mudvayne opened the show, then Disturbed, PapaRoach, LinkinPark, Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. I was 15 and it was still my favorite concert I’ve ever been to and I’ve seen many of the greats and ms y amazing artists. But they first Slipknot show was special. The IOWA era was amazing I got the cd a week early actually from my local record store which is gone now. I loved that place. I listened to IOWA 4 times in a row that night. You gotta see them at least once
