The Advaita Vedanta philosophy recognizes four planes of existence, which resonate with Wilber’s quadrants: Atman (Self, Consciousness) connects with the Upper Left, reflecting inner spiritual experiences and awareness. Maya (Illusion, World) connects with the Upper Right, emphasizing the objective, material world-how we perceive the physical body and world. Dharma (Social Order) can align with the Lower Right, as it refers to the laws, customs, and duties that govern society. Samskara (Cultural Impressions) relates to the Lower Left, where shared cultural values and mental imprints shape collective consciousness.
I strongly recommend Ken's book "No boundary", in which he goes through all stages of consciousness or rather the different aspects of the resistance to the unity consciousness - perfect for those who have some basic knowledge in psychology, meditation and religion. He also introduced me to the Freud's shadow theory which changed my entire life. Interestingly I got to be introduced to Ken's work through his book "Grace and grit" in which he and his then wife share their journey through love, pain and loss. I remember I cried my eyes out and needed weeks to integrate the story. This story still sits with me after all these years... On the top of everything he is one of the most intelligent people ever.
He is excellent - I’ve read ten of his books and truly appreciate his contribution. Thank you for taking the time to comment here, Kamila - somebody will benefit from your guidance!
I am so grateful for your beautiful videos. I totally get you, and you have a very calming voice and demeanor. I agree that transcending via acceptance of others is the way forward. Change is the breath of life. Non duality brings me comfort.
Thank you, and well done for taking on Wilber's body of work. His first book, The Spectrum of Consciousness, was a real game changer for me. I felt I began to really understand myself and the universe when I read that book a couple of years ago. Now I am a huge fan.
As the great Terence Mc Kenna said - "It's all in the interstitials"...Celebrate and know the paradox. Another great video encapsulation. Really enjoying your work. Thank You
I think to break apart the word conscious enlightens us to the idea that there is a decisive hierarchy of that which people choose to contract into scion - and the beautiful thing is its a hierarchy you can absolutely freely climb - Especially in oppressed or limited circumstances

Great job summarizing Wilbers work. Transcend and include has contributed and the awareness of that developmental progression has been a great training of mental clarity and cognition. What I have found lacking in Wilbers work is linguistic distinctions, where the ground of Being is like a blank canvas and on the canvas my language brings forth something new from nothing and paints with my speaking a new realm of possiibility simply by speaking it into existence .
Hmm - have you read religion of tomorrow? I find that Wilber actually takes great care to be pretty accurate in his language! Thank you for commenting too 🌲
I totally agree. I love Wilber but do not resonate with all of his theory. Many others have found some aspects of his theory problematic. One contention is that Wilber doesn't seem to know how formidable and ancient the Dynamic Ground is in its repressed state. Then again, he is so advanced he may have done most of his shadow work in prior lives. The shadow contains personal content, the repressed instincts, feelings, and emotions, and the pre-personal layers, which I believe is the Soul's karma. After decades of purging, the Divine Core is revealed at the bottom. Even better and more integral than Wilber is Michael Washburn and his books. My fave "The Ego and the Dynamic Ground" is spot on. Peace.
Yep, heady. But great job covering huge stuff in 15 min.. My mind went to Gestalt, Micheal Singer’s “Unteathered Soul,” and Professor Martin Bidney’s “Be-loved Imaginer.” And in some ways Thomas Moore’s “Care of the Soul,” and Jungian James Hillman.
Loved it to stumble accross your video on Wilber's work amongst your other content, I think it really illustrates how global and 360° you approach inner work and individuation (also with Wilber's work bridging the gap with collective actualisation and growth in consciousness). Well done for making this video and awakening our interest. Just reading my comment I can also see that I got straight into my head, yet his theories really put sensations, gut feelings and intuitions into words and make me "click". I don't read his books anymore because I'm trying slowly and humbly to integrate and embody where I stand in terms of consciousness, facing day to day paradoxes and tensions due to all the "levels" that are intertwined and influence eachother. This all leads me to more and more humility, of a path of nuances or integration of different perspectives, while also committing and taking steps towards what I believe in, fully knowing that it only is one way. It's a real challenge....
Elise, thank you for this sophisticated and throughly enjoyable comment! I can see we try to experience and perceive in similar full-spectrum ways, and I appreciate that 🌲
9:09 thank you for articulating this concept so beautifully. I was having lots of organic experiences with "conscious expansion" in 2020 and "seeing" this concept in my mind's eye in a way I could not articulate. It was like my mind was showing me what was happening to me and my level of understanding without my full comprehension of "what I was reaching for" - it's difficult to explain. This is my first time encountering books on this info... I have a lot to learn about integral theory. Thank you!
Jordan thank you for posting this video. I am currently reading TBHofE and I have to say I find the ideas fascinating but challenging to understand AND to explain. I am listening to its audio version and reading it at the same time. The other day I was so taken by an idea from the book and wanted to tell my husband about it, only to find myself at loss of words to explain what I found so amazing. lol I am 30% in and planning to finish it but want to understand all of it. I really think there is a lot of fascinating wisdom in his theory. I just have to make sure I understand them. 😊
Holy crap! So cool to actually hear someone talking about an intense internal experience I've had for so much of my life. I never fully understood why, but I have always been able to hold a constant dualistic view where I could turn concepts back and forth and see the validity of both sides. Exactly like you talk about at 9:10 and on! (Apparently i really need to read this book!) As a child, adults would often interpret my dual and yet inclusive viewpoint as defiance or questioning authority....which was so upsetting and obviously caused some trauma. As I got older I was told by my grandfather (one of my few great mentors) that he was concerned by my "moral relativism" when again I was so frustrated at my lack of ability to explain why how I was seeing the world was like this KEY I knew was so important to helping HEAL the world or something. Damn! 🤣 ordering the book now!!!!
Basically, we're talking about the fractal aspect of existence. Did I get it right? Because it's always something built upon the previous one in place as a reference and then more variables are added to the "map" of the bigger whole. I really need to read these, I outrageously lack the knowledge on integral psy. Because it seems to certainly be my cup of tea. hehe! Those types of back and forth movements for development feel so much more natural, at least in my experience. I get why you were caught up trying to summarize such a complex topic. By the way, talking about complexity, this seems to fit perfectly with some articles I've read about complex systems theory. It apparently is how everything relates to everything. Not just human consciousness, but any pattern in existence inside our known universe. Like turtles all the way down. Again, not much have I explored this field because it's so exciting, but too much to take in one bite. Helas, my human time is always less than my curiosity and will to learn! >< Fascinating! I got ramped up by your enthusiasm recording about it! ; P
In response to 'fractal', I would stay with the concept of 'spheres built on spheres' for simplicity. Holonic consciousness isn't necessarily fractal... (and it's all an attempt to visually articulate the ineffable anyway hahah) Hard topic to talk about, for sure. So much more to teach and question here. Turtles all the way down indeed!
@@jordanthornton LOL! Yes, here I am again convulsively trying to find a way to understand (or to confirm if I understood properly). Well, if anything, we have a lot to chew on. A lot to keep each other company, all the thousands (and evergrowing) of us! I love it. :D
Don't feel bad. Wilber's theory is problematic in a number of ways. My favorite is "A Brief History of Everything". The vast span and depth of knowledge that he conveys and integrates is astounding. Wilber's pre/trans fallacy is one debatable premise and there are many others. For instance, he advises to simply imagine your shadow leaving you on the out breath. This is a very naive understanding of the shadow. The shadow has many layers; a personal "this life" layer of trauma and self rejection, and a pre-personal or what I call "Soul level" trauma that pre-dates this lifetime. Jung called this the collective unconscious. Despite what you call it...when the shadow de-represses, it is a very difficult journey indeed and takes decades. I love Ken and his books but he filters through his Buddhist belief system and that becomes apparent. No one is perfect, even when in the Self Realized stage. The best book I have ever read regarding Integrated existence is by Michael Washburn. "The Ego and the Dynamic Ground" is spot on and describes the work precisely. This is because Washburn walked and suffered the path himself and went all the way to Soul Realization and beyond.
I’ve been vegan 🌱 for 10 years. I also like Daoism. If people think it’s one end of an extreme, it’s sad. Society’s acceptance of extreme harm to other creatures sadly makes it seem esoteric and out of balance. This is my middle way. It was my naturally chosen path, not chosen by fixating on a leader. Humans are not obligate omnivores. We are related to other apes, and plant-based is natural and easy for us humans who live in fertile places with good plant 🌱 growth 🙂 But there’s no reason I should justify myself to you I guess
I have found a lighthouse: YOU. (--and - dang it - I'm going to have to enter the world of Instagram, which I was avoiding like the proverbial plague.)
Thank you, and also please go for the books themselves! Far more value inside the texts than I can convey! Also don’t feel compelled to get Instagram if you’ve done this far without it! That’s a quality life choice!
Francesco ... delete RED #3 Hylic hegemonic retardation ... and Wilber's AQAL model is perfect ... RED #3 is not in many peoples ... so it cannot be a hierarchical level to grow up through as is wrongly sold .. This is where Ken Wilber makes an almighty "blunder" ... On the one hand Wilber says: 1. "RED #3 is a disease of the (desperado Soul traveller) self' ( = Hylic hegemonic retardation for age ... a gdp-HDI "stop growth" or stag-nans or cave-in or Fall of Man ... your centre cannot hold ... sell your Soul to the Devil, etc) And on the other hand Wilber says: 2. "Let RED be RED" ... ( = NO !! ) ... SandyG - AQAL T3/10+ - Australia
All good 'till you started with the nonsense about male dominance hierarchy... cliche dominance... females do the same albeit in a far more manipulative manner. Be careful, kid.

Fascinating! I got ramped up by your enthusiasm recording about it! ; P
In response to 'fractal', I would stay with the concept of 'spheres built on spheres' for simplicity. Holonic consciousness isn't necessarily fractal... (and it's all an attempt to visually articulate the ineffable anyway hahah)
Hard topic to talk about, for sure.
I love it. :D
Plz make a video on mindful or conscious breathing
I won't be making that video, but I know there are plenty of great breathwork teachers out there on RUclips already! Thank you for commenting again!
Don't feel bad. Wilber's theory is problematic in a number of ways. My favorite is
"A Brief History of Everything".

We are related to other apes, and plant-based is natural and easy for us humans who live in fertile places with good plant 🌱 growth 🙂
But there’s no reason I should justify myself to you I guess
Cool -likewise haven’t eaten meat or dairy in three years ✌🏻 Agree with some of your points.

@@jordanthornton just as you imagined, I went straight to Amazon. My first - also what you suggested - is on its way to me.😃
Il modello integrale di Wilber non è il massimo
Francesco ... delete RED #3 Hylic hegemonic retardation ... and Wilber's AQAL model is perfect ...
RED #3 is not in many peoples ... so it cannot be a hierarchical level to grow up through as is wrongly sold ..
This is where Ken Wilber makes an almighty "blunder" ...
On the one hand Wilber says:
1. "RED #3 is a disease of the (desperado Soul traveller) self' ( = Hylic hegemonic retardation for age ... a gdp-HDI "stop growth" or stag-nans or cave-in or Fall of Man ... your centre cannot hold ... sell your Soul to the Devil, etc)
And on the other hand Wilber says:
2. "Let RED be RED" ... ( = NO !! ) ...
SandyG - AQAL T3/10+ - Australia
All good 'till you started with the nonsense about male dominance hierarchy... cliche dominance... females do the same albeit in a far more manipulative manner. Be careful, kid.
Appetite = wet!!!!!
In regards to reading integral psychology, I hope? 😅
Wilber devastante

If you're looking for answers, this video has none.
Made me laugh 😂 - 100% go read Wilber directly, he’s a genius 🌲
