  • In this video we will explore and compare two cult wines of Napa Valley, Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle. We will discuss the world of winery allocation, and learn about the history of these two wines and how they developed their cult status. We will also be opening a 2012 vintage of each bottle and put them against each other to find the ultimate cult cabernet.

    You probably already know this but if you like Screaming Eagle, I'd recommend Favia run by one of Screaming Eagle's old winemakers (Andy Erickson) and Heidi Barrett's Barrett & Barrett. Heidi did Screaming Eagle's first vintage.

      LOL - too funny. Caymus is my brother's favorite wine. When he visits from Norway, or when I travel there, I make sure to give him plenty of Caymus SS. It's like liquid candy - sweet and syrupy - and he loves it.

      @Ruirspirul ;) he was exuberant about the wines he liked and had a huge affect on what was produced in Napa for years, so to ignore him and any wine he liked would be a mistake. Our palates may differ, but his remarks and reviews do give us a peak into a history of Napa wines.

      Me too. But probably for a completely different reason. They describe the channel itself. It's a poor decision to watch this crap. If you are serious then watch Mathew Horkey and Konstantin Baum instead. They know what they talk about and describe the wines. Blind. Not just talk talk talk that are supposed to sound fancy.

    The 1994 vintage from Napa is the greatest vintage I have seen. The only other vintage comparable, to me, is 1999. Wine Spectator noticed this too and compared the two vintages by taking the scores they had given to 20 or 30 or more wines that they had tasted from both vintages and then adding them up and dividing. 1999 "won" by 0.1 points. But there were stylistic differences. The 1999 vintage happened after the huge and super delicious 1997 vintage that lead to the big alcohol wines of the first decade of the new century. The 1999s did not have the big alcohol but were brilliant. The 1994s could do anything. With or without food, drink now or cellar. The 1999s could do those things too and seemed to have a bit more fruit and a bit more structure on a slightly lighter frame. Of course, these are my opinions and I'm sure someone would disagree. That's fine as no one can drink the wine for you.

    Do “cult” wines use any additives like color, oak essence, etc., or do they rely 100% on the grape juice for flavor?

    • @nuno.peixoto
      @nuno.peixoto 29 дней назад +2

      100% grape juice. It's the wood and the winemaking techniques that will impart those secondary aromas/flavours.

    That Harlan cork shows questionable storage. "Dusty tannins"(astringent?), "more approachable", "garnet"(more bottle age for the same year). I liked the video.
