Do you think this warning label is a good idea?

Personally, I like the idea of educating teenagers on using social media in a responsible way and making them aware of potential harms. I think banner blindness is a real thing and if such a warning label was implemented, people would learn to quickly dismiss it and move on.

There is an author named Jonathan Haidt who goes into the impacts of social media on youth, you should have him on sometime!

Very good to provide this extra filter for young, impressionable minds.

I am not against the warning label, as long as schools strive to address this issue with parents and students, and the healthcare system is prepared to handle the situation. The warning label cannot replace real policy.

Love the show and listen to you guys all the time! I'm an educator and am keenly aware of the many ways social media harms teens. But it isn't the work of educators to clean up these platforms and the way the systems are designed to addict users.
Why does Casey keep saying over and over that nothing has been demonstrated about the causal link between social media use and teen mental health after they hosted Haidt on the show? If you actually read Haidt's book, you'd see that the causal links have been demonstrated. Not only should there be warning labels about specific harms, but there should be real age verification for all adult content on the internet--from social media to so much more. We refuse to hand out alcohol to 15 year olds. Why shouldn't we refuse to hand mentally destabilizing adult media content to 11, 12, and 13 year olds?

Enjoyed the interview with Renée DiResta very much. Keep up your intersting quality interviews as an answer on modern changes we have to deal with as a society.

it’s telling how you can predictably you can get congress to adopt your view on issues regardless of what they are by just investing a few million $ into lobbying. it’s almost not worth it to do anything else when an effective lobbying playbook exists and works every time it seems. crypto finally figured it out

i’m on the left but i think it’s kind of strange that beating up on social media because no one believes our political leaders anymore is sort of dumb.

@@pinklefoo i think what i wrote is fairly clear. the political left is intent on controlling what does not implicitly and explicitly support it. it’s dangerous. it feels like the entire left is turning into ccp style dictator wannabes.
i don’t think social media is the issue. it’s the corruption. it’s the absolute disregard for the citizenry. but i suppose that’s now called “populism” even though it isn’t. that’s just the way things should be.

I grew up in the early Facebook and Instagram days and can say for a fact that it had a negative affect on my mental health. I think that now we know the negative effects that social media can have on people, we can help to educate the youth about the risks. Not sure that a warning would really do that though, I think it comes down to parents and teachers really taking the time to educate kids about the risks.

I don’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings, but evidence suggests that PARENTS also cause a lot of the non-genetic mental health problems that we see (and the genetic ones, but let’s not rub salt in their wounds, these PARENT people that we all complain about and are).
Children seem to HAVE mental health problems. So let’s not put 100% of our eggs in the prevention basket. Let’s TREAT mental health problems.

All for that but if its correct that a corporate machine is knowingly generating eating disorders and mental/emotional harm in youth etc but doesn't care because it needs those clicks for profit and growth then its not just about "prevention" even. Its just like, what do we do about that?

I actually disagree. Persuasion-going out in public and simply TELLING corporations or groups to do the right thing and why-I think, is the very ESSENCE of Democracy and our leaders can lead by doing it, too. #jawboning

Hey if they put your podcast behind a paywall its gonna kill your momentum and punish the little people like me. Someone in my house already subscribes. We shouldn't have to pay twice.
This is one of my favorite pods, but like most NYers, the NYT subscription is way too expensive.
Just in case you care about one random trans woman's opinion.
