- This is a BBC documentary entitled 'Leaving Amish Paradise'. It was originally aired on March 16, 2011. It features Ephraim & Amanda Stoltzfus as they along with their family are on the journey of leaving the Old Order Amish church.

Ephraim has to really watch out that he doesn’t get legalistic! The way he didn’t support his new convert just because the man chose not to go to the Amish church when he was going to be kicked out………was NOT Christlike in the least! I’ve lived among the Amish, Mennonite and I am a Christian. I have seen so many get so caught up in their spiritual growth that become exactly what God doesn’t want. It’s called being legalistic.
I love the fact that he's spreading the word of God. May God bless him and his family. He is very brave in choosing this lifestyle.

Ephraim and Jessie and their families have taken a tremendous step of faith in trusting God to lead and provide for their needs - spiritual, physical and financial. That is a wonderful witness to others.

I have a lot of respect for the Amish people who live here in Illinois and Missouri and are very respectful to all.
I was happy to see Marie looking so good! These two families made such a leap into a different culture, it's amazing to watch. Great documentary.

The main reason I sought out this second video was to see how your little girl is doing. I prayed for you all, but especially for her. Since seeing the first video, my 12 year old grand daughter had a tumor appear on her femur. She is doing great. The tumor has been removed and she’s walking again. It does my heart good to see your little one doing well.
After watching much of this episode, I wish I could meet with you to discuss and study scripture together. You’ve come from a very strict , law abiding sect, and are carrying much of that culture of religion with you. People need to hear about grace. They need to hear about value. God considers us His inheritance. He proved we were worth a great deal to Him. We are the only thing in creation He left His throne for. We are the only thing in creation He hung on a cross for. It is by grace my friend. The Greek word for repent simply means change your mind. This means that you receive salvation not by rules or works. You receive by having a relationship with God. John 17:3.
I would be willing to drive from central Md. to meet up with you and study. God bless you on your new venture brother.

I have seen horse auctions where these Amish owned horses when they can’t work anymore are starved and rescued from these meat places! I was horrified at their treatment of a horse that had served them faithfully for years! Shame on them!

Yes, by grace alone we are saved. Our works are the result of our faith and the evidence that we love and follow Jesus Christ. If we believe in him but don’t follow him, will grace save us? Or are we then the ones he calls hypocrites and says he never knew us. It seems like both grace and works are important. But all our works must be done for God, not for vainglory. Grace saves us, no doubt. But how far we go in heaven must be according to what we say and do, and what’s really in our hearts.

I think Ephraim should not make his daughter feel like her medicine is a burden to him who is NOT working.
For Ephraim: Everyone would like not to work, so to speak. Ephraim have you considered that the money handed to you in envelopes came from hard working people. Nothing is really free, every dollar is earned by someone's work. Also , hospitals are full of working people and supplies, peoples hourly work and supplies cost money. Ephraim, you yourself would not do work for free, so then why should you expect others to pay for you? Please think about these concepts.

Being raised as Jehovahs Witness..I totally can relate to this family. I left and have been permanently shunned..until you experience this most heart wrenching decision..don't jude.
God provides with WORK. The Bible says if you don't work, you dont eat.

I’m a believer. I think Ephraim needs to worry less about money. Whether he has a job or not God is still his provider. Getting a job and working is very Biblical. He kept asking about his plans, he needs to submit those to God and be willing to do whatever he needs to in order to obey. The first responsibility God has given him is his family. He has to take care of them. He shouldn’t make his daughter feel bad that her medicine costs money.

Yes he should be working to provide for his family. That would enable him to help other people .
He is actually working by contracting out various jobs and not hired hourly, this way he can earn more, too bad if it is not as you expecting him to be part of labor camp work.
He’s doing the Lords work daily and relying totally on God .

Is Ephraim any different than the Amish elders when he shunned his friend for not doing what HE expected him to do? And, is Ephraim turning people away from the Word by TELLING carnival goers to not spend too much time at the carnival? Shouldn't he have just prayed about these things instead of being the control person that he is? Please pray about your control issue and pray for meekness and a more gentle spirit, which is pleasing to our Lord.

We are called to speak truth to others. Love reaches out. Keeping quiet and only praying is not a definition of love. We are commanded to speak the truth in love.
@@patriciadaw1210if someone asks, not by shoving it in their face. Jesus teaches us to seek him, to ask, to knock. He doesn’t shove his gospel in anyone’s face. He waits for us to come to him. Tent meetings invite all to come. But standing in the street and being intrusive as folks go about their business is intrusive and anything but inviting. It hardens people’s hearts and turns them away from God. This does not please God at all.

I support them leaving the Amish life, however, exchanging one legalistic view for another is really no better.
This is a beautiful story about these amish families reading God's Holy Word the Bible and letting God open thier eyes and heart to the Truth the Amish people are really nice people but I could understand when you start reading the Bible how Jesus open eyes and hearts to what Jesus has called us to be God Bless them Jesus guide and protect them in Jesus name I pray Amen 🙏

anyone else think this sounds a lot like a cult? Not the Amish lifestyle but the new church and what they believe? Leaving it up to God to provide them a free house and money to live on so they don't have to work?

Amish have an appealing lifestyle in some respects, and it's great to see little kids doing real work. Things must change, even for this old sect, as the generations keep passing, right? BTW, do the teenage girls also have leeway to go wild...? Good, thought provoking documentary. Thank you.

The only difference is their elders, as leaders, do not want their church members to be able to read the old German bible, but to follow their restrictions that are not bible based, but for their control of the church members. Their words. Not bible teaching.

I think one of the things I admire most about the Amish is that they don’t push their beliefs in our faces loud and proud. They lead by quiet example. Ephraim has become very judgmental and pharisaical, and intrusive. It’s quite sad, actually.
He is transitioning from Amish and needs more time to adopt from old to new.

I don't think I could have Ephraim for a friend. I would always feel judged. He comes across as very judgemental, I stay away from those kinds of people.
The Bible says come humbly before the throne of grace, but Ephraim seems like he's bossing the Lord around.
Part 1 started off so promising as these families learned to know Jesus in a real way, but now he seems to be in a new version of Amish. Maybe Amish.2.
Good discernment. Yes. Possibly he still needs deliverance from the spirit of religion. I wonder if Nicodemus was like this. It might take a while for those who get free physically to become fully free. It took me about five years after leaving a similar cult. Thanks to Jesus and His grace.
I have to agree. I found him very judgemental and contradictory of what he is trying to preach. He doesn't seem to understand that his words and actions are not Godly but manly.

Looks to me he has traded one devil for another one. Everyone needs structure! He has almost become a fanatic! I had more respect when I watched session 1. It makes me sad to hear him talk about his daughter’s medical prices in front of her. Wake up! People don’t owe you things! Go to work, & provide for your growing family. There are those Ten Commandments.
Please don't put all the Amish in one boat! There are many groups that clearly teach the plan of salvation and live godly lives! These groups do not allow their youth to live however they want, sin in the church is dealt with in a godly way. They also do not shun people for leaving the church unless they are deliberately living in sin. Let's not judge the Amish please

The Amish with breeding puppy mills, horrible conditions and treatment for their work horses that they just take to a slaughterhouse when they are no longer useful. The Amish aren't what they're cracked up to be I have grown up with them all of my life. There's a lot of things that happened behind closed doors in the Amish community. Oh yes Lancaster Amish making money and shopping at Sam's club.
I read a story about a man who always believed God would save him. There came a great flood and he was on the roof of his house waiting for God to come save him. A boat came to rescue survivors and found him. He said no, go help others for God will save me. A helicopter came and hovered overhead to rescue him. Again he said no. I will wait for God to rescue me. The man drowned and stood before God. He said God why didn't you save me? God said I sent a boat and a helicopter to save you but you refused my help. God will provide a path and means to support yourself and your family. If that is refused it isn't God's fault. Someone can still spread their beliefs to others. But there are also earthly needs that someone, themselves are responsible for.

He's gotten quite fanatical about religion. I know I don't like when people approach trying to push their faith on me. Sometimes I say no thank you but sometimes I take what they offer me to read. Depends on my mood I guess. That's the polite thing to do.
This is how churches, parishioners, and faith grows: by change, and by the courage to change. The Stoltzfus family and their friends are amazing, beautiful, and courageous. Best wishes to them!

i think going with the Bible is the right way to go..Our life would be empty without GODS Word to guide us.
Whoever abandons a conservative community will reap the results when their children start drinking alcohol, mixing with other worldly or secular people, using drugs, unwanted pregnancies, etc. I would pay to be accepted and live in a community like that.

My sister and brother in-law lives on the first st were you will see the first horse and buggy I lived in this area for three years so the thing about the Amish are they are all about making money they have huge hand in puppy mills they are slightly racist the call black people dark people they also eat regular food shop at walmart and every sunday night around 1 am the buggy would roll down the street eat drove my sister's dogs crazy And one sad thing that happens from tine to tine is they would get hit by cars in there buggy and for people who are not familiar with Lancaster its like you walked into central America this gentlemen has turned into a fantic he should come to Denver he would think he woke up in hell

It is possible to “Spread the word of God” while holding a full-time job to support your family. I think this young man is a little removed from reality
God provided a job. God's plan isn't always what we expect.
