That's because British people emigrated to Australia and took their tastes and cooking knowledge with them so Australians and Kiwis have similar British food.

Steve was correct about VCR. Video Cassette Recorder is the all encompassing term that cover different formats of video recorder including VHS, Betamax and U-Matic.
There's a reason that Penguin bars and Tim Tams are so alike. Tim Tams are an Aussie's attempt to make a better Penguin. Specifically Ian Norris from the Arnott’s company visited England in 1958 while on a trip around the world looking for inspiration for a new product, and took away the idea for a biscuit similar to the Penguin.
Don't know if you knew but Vegemite was actually created during wartime due to the shortage of Marmite, so that's why they taste similar, Australians apparently loved Marmite and wanted to copy it when they couldn't get it.

If you want to get a smaller jar of Marmite, all you have to do is have a baby in a UK maternity hospital. When mother and baby leave the maternity hospital, they take away with them what's called a 'bounty box' which contains various useful samples for a new mother and child. I'm not sure why a miniature jar of Marmite is included, but it always is, (I presume it's a suggested foodstuff as an iron supplement!)
The Scottish tablet is more of a survival food or something to keep your energy up if you’re out walking in the mountains, there is an English version too called Kendal mint cake

Back when I was a kid in the early 80’s and VCR’s started to become commonplace, there were two different types of VCR available (at least here in the U.K.) there was the VHS and Betamax. Betamax had smaller cassettes and in general were considered to be a little bit better quality but VHS was cheaper, so it took off and Betamax died off but the cassettes were still known as VHS tapes even though they didn’t need to differentiated from anything else.
Oooh never heard of Betamax, not sure if we had them in Australia 🤔 We used to love going to the video library and borrowing vhs tapes as kids (also grew up in the 80's) - so fun!
@@KristyandSteve I was born in the mid 70’s, so I’m pretty sure that Betamax were on their way out by the mid 80’s. Our first VCR was a front loader Betamax, which seemed so posh as most people were still getting top loader VCR’s. It must have cost my parents a small fortune at the time and it had to be replaced within maybe five years or so because we could no longer get tapes for it. I’m pretty sure that the first rental video I ever saw in it was Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark…I don’t know if it was me or my parents or my brothers that had a thing for Harrison Ford because the first film I remember seeing in the cinema was The Empire Strikes Back 😄

I think what I am seeing with these Non-UK vs UK Food type videos, is that there is a definitely an East/West Split of Sugar or Salt/Savory based snack preferences. In North America they have more of a sweet tooth or blander palate so they cannot handle quite salty/savory snacks. Everything over there is also loaded with added sugars and flavourings. Whereas in the UK & East European/Asian & Australasian palates are more suited to salty/savoury & sour foods and more of our snacks have more natural ingredients, so we can handle different complex flavours and heat much better.
Another great video. Great to see your in north east Scotland near my home town of Dundee. Tablet is very sickly sweet I can’t eat it and I agree oat cakes are not the best but slightly better with something on top.
Tablet is often served as a small square alongside a coffee in restaurants after a meal. A sweet treat. Too much and you’ll be peeling yourself from the ceiling from the sugar high. Most folk would just break off a square from the bar to snack on rather than eat the entire bar in one. Thankfully you tried Mrs Tilly’s as that’s one of the best mass produced ones.
Ahhh yes could imagine a small square served with a tea or coffee, that sounds lovely. We literally ate it like a chocolate bar and had finished it within 20mins of finishing the video 🥴 Had a migraine for the next two days lol serves me right!
Scottish tablet and the similarly sugary but non-dairy Kendal Mint Cake, were both popular expedition rations for polar explorers/mountaineers/hikers/campers and the likes. High energy/calory content and light weight.
The Penguin Biscuit is an institution in the UK.. You are bang-on about the similarities with a Tim-Tam. You can also Penguin Slam and suck your coffee through the biscuit. One little known fact is that the Penguin "biscuit" layer is actually a Bourbon biscuit which has been shrouded in the chocolate. The only difference between the two is the type of fondant filling.
Irn Bru is Scottish it is the colour of rust because it is made from girders .it is widely used as a hangover cure you have the modern safe version the original 1901 version is still available in a glass bottle .Oat cakes are a Scottish survival food dating back thousands of years .in modern times you will find them on the Cheese board .everyone's granny used to make tablet in the home .

Vegimite is the Aussie version of Marmite. (they are basically the same thing). Irn Bru the only soft drink which outsells Coca Cola at least at one point anywhere in the world. Scottish National Soft Drink 1: US Multinational Soft Drink 0 For Oat Cakes, you'd usually have them with cheese. For the HobNobs try dunking them in a cup of tea first.

Haha Id say this is completely understandable. Tea is underrated in Australia and too many fruity options (not a fan of those) always English Breakfast with a splash of milk, served piping hot - the best!
Orkney thin oatcakes... Use em for dipping or with as you said, cream cheese or cheese and fruit and chutney and pickles etc... or with marmite will do... yeah! They're just designed to be a carriage for food into your mouth 🤷♀️😊

Team pickled onion EVERYDAY! We also love the pickled egg you guys have on offer from your fish and chip shops, so good! (we try one in our other British food vlog) - we dont have anything like that in Australia unfortunately. Thank you for watching 😀
Marmite is made from yeast left after brewing beer as per Vegemite, Irn Bru is Scottish in origin but only has become UK-wide in the last 30 years, it used to be advertised as being 'made from girders' so is pronounced 'iron'. Oat cakes are made to go with cheese, the best shortbread is made with just butter (check the ingredients) some just have 'flavouring' . Tablet is fudge cooked too far so it becomes grainy, an acquired taste. No refrigeration required as nothing could grow in all that sugar!
Thank you! Appreciate you watching our video and taking the time to comment - you've provided good information for anyone else reading this comment section 🥰

Looks like you'll be landing in the north-east of England soon, be sure to to get some fish & chips from the Longsands chippy in Tynemouth..!
Next time we're in the UK for sure! 🇬🇧
haha, yeah, you play a VHS (tape) on a VCR (video cassette recorder)
Correct! - I had a brain freeze there for a second 🤣
Oat cakes should be eaten with butter and a strong cheese of your choice 😊
Delicious! 😋
Any old cheese will do 😂
Hi I have oat cakes with cheeses, AND cheese spread. And take care. 👍👍👍
Thanks Shane! ☺️
Oatcakes with butter qnd cheese, never dry
Butter and cheese would have been perfect on the oat cakes 😋
I think what I am seeing with these Non-UK vs UK Food type videos, is that there is a definitely an East/West Split of Sugar or Salt/Savory based snack preferences. In North America they have more of a sweet tooth or blander palate so they cannot handle quite salty/savory snacks. Everything over there is also loaded with added sugars and flavourings. Whereas in the UK & East European/Asian & Australasian palates are more suited to salty/savoury & sour foods and more of our snacks have more natural ingredients, so we can handle different complex flavours and heat much better.
Oatcakes with butter on, and some decent cheese!
Another great video. Great to see your in north east Scotland near my home town of Dundee. Tablet is very sickly sweet I can’t eat it and I agree oat cakes are not the best but slightly better with something on top.
Thank you Quinn! Such a beautiful part of Scotland to live, you're very lucky 🥰
Hi Alan! 👋 Thanks very much for watching our vlog and for taking the time to comment. Which one do you prefer Tim Tam or a Penguin? 😬
@@KristyandSteve oooh..The Jury is out on that one. Both are just equally as good! ❤️
Good answer! 😉
Thanks for this information! 🙏
New penguin eating technique unlocked.
So good! Try with cold milk, we have also been told its great
Oatcakes and shortbread are best enjoyed with a cup of tea. I am a British guy
Totally agree Malcolm!
Hi guys, oat cakes are gòod with butter and soft or hard cheese and branston pickle.cheers.
Sounds good to us! 😋
After seeing you both eat that much marmite makes you legends in my mind.
Haha we are accustomed to the taste from our 40 years of experience with Vegemite! Thank you for watching 🤗
Try the oatcakes with a strong cheddar and red onion or just a chutney, yum
Thank you, sounds perfect!
The oatcakes you eat with cheese or with a plate of stovies thats cornedbeef hash
VCR means video cassette recorder lol
Have you checked out any of the islands?
Hello! No we didnt. Our itinerary started in Glasgow to Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Inverness, St Andrews and back to Glasgow. We were initially going to Isle of Skye but decided to head east instead. Definitely will visit the islands next time were in the UK (next year hopefully 🤞)
Love your channel ❤ would love some advice for content on Australian popular foods/snacks 🙌🏻
Thank you! We just subscribed to your channel and watched your American chips mystery box taste test - you're hilarious! 🤣 So good! We'll put together a list of popular aussie snacks for you and comment it on your recent youtube video 🥰
@@KristyandSteve aww thank you I really appreciate that and me and my girlfriend binge watched some of your stuff it’s extremely wholesome 🙌🏻🙌🏻
irn bru, which is the scotish drink, its one of the only countries in the world, where irn bru sells more than coke,
Id believe that for sure, it was everywhere! Do you like it?
Pretty sure Scotland is the ONLY country in the world where Coca-Cola isn't the best seller.
@@Obi-J I think your right, im not scottish, from north east england, so i hedged my bets lol
Penguins are the original TimTam. Apparently someone from the factory in Australia came to visit his friend who made penguins, and he took the recipe back to Australia.
On behalf of every Australian, we cant thank whoever did this ,enough! 🤣
Vegimite is the Aussie version of Marmite. (they are basically the same thing).
Irn Bru the only soft drink which outsells Coca Cola at least at one point anywhere in the world. Scottish National Soft Drink 1: US Multinational Soft Drink 0
For Oat Cakes, you'd usually have them with cheese.
For the HobNobs try dunking them in a cup of tea first.
Thanks Stuart! Appreciate the info 😊
Great video, 1st time viewing channel & have subscribed already 👍😁🇬🇧
Thanks so much! ❤️
irn bru, in scotland out sells coke, its the only country in the world, where it sells more than coke
Great vid folks. Oatcakes are awesome with pate and caramelised onion chutney.
Sounds good to us Alfie! Yum 😋
for oatcakes cheese and butter is the best. Or even a dip or something mad like pesto so nice together
Thanks Jess! Definitely agree with cheese and butter- yum! 🤤
Marmite is great in gravy's... and as a glaze for Brussel sprouts! 😊
The oat cakes you would usually put some cheddar cheese and onion chutney on them or a pate. Cream cheese and smoker salmon is also nice
Yum, sounds delicious! 😋
Hey love the video new subscriber here, I'm from England in Manchester and honestly out of all the items you showed the monster munch are my favourite, keep up the good work guys 👍
Thanks Chris! Yes we loved the pickled onion monster munch, wish we had them back home. You're lucky to live in Manchester, one of our favourite cities! 🇬🇧❤️
hob nobs has to be with tea also, they are the king of dunking buscuits, rich tea is a one one dip, in an out,
We tried hob nobs without the chocolate and they were so much better! Which do you prefer?
@@KristyandSteve with choc and dunk in tea, thats the british way,
its the poor mans afternoon tea lol, we have tea with everything, good news, bad news, for a break, contractors working on your house, your a good tea house or bad tea house, which means as soon as you arrive, your offered tea, then every hour, biscuits on a plate, best thing you can do for british contractor, we go the extra mile lol, no tea, do it yourself, its not in contract lol
Haha Id say this is completely understandable. Tea is underrated in Australia and too many fruity options (not a fan of those) always English Breakfast with a splash of milk, served piping hot - the best!
Irn Bru with Vanilla Ice Cream! 😋😋😋
The same as Cream soda?????
I'm thinking Aussie Cream Soda... might be different to ours!
Omg that sounds like a great combo with the Irn Bru & ice cream. We'd call that a "spider" in Australia- YUM!
Orkney thin oatcakes... Use em for dipping or with as you said, cream cheese or cheese and fruit and chutney and pickles etc... or with marmite will do... yeah! They're just designed to be a carriage for food into your mouth 🤷♀️😊
Yum! Sounds good 😋
@@KristyandSteve my personal go to for is some stilton and red onion marmalade... Or habanero jam... Salty and sweet and spicy (in habaneros case) yummy 🤤
Ooohhh you fancy! We like that 🥰
Great video. I've watched a few of these types of videos. Pickled onion definitely divides everyone!
Are you sure about that. I live in London and I've seen irn bru in most stores since I was a kid in the 70's 🤔
Hobnobs are bangin, with tea they’re good but milk chocolate digestives are the best, or the caramel ones
Yum! We need to try the caramel next time 😋
Steve smashing the monster munch
🤣
The aussie woman's name is cheeky tam
Did you get the other message I wrote it seems to have disappeared

Heya Brian! Just got the messages now, they were in the "held for review" folder for some reason 💁🏻♀️
We would have loved to visit Cadbury World but unfortunately were only in Birmingham for a day. We'll check out Cheeky Tam now, thanks for the recommendation ☺️
@@KristyandSteve thanks guys enjoy the rest of your visit in the uk
Hey guys sorry to correct yous but it is iron bru aka irn-bru and u can only get it in Scotland it's a Scottish juice, and the chips u says in the UK we say crisps and marmite is u either love it or u don't in the UK, dry biscuits u would put butter on it, shortbread originally Scotland again, penguin biscuits not cookie, cookies are round and has chocolate chips in them, sorry for the correction just trying to help,
Thanks Stephanie! Appreciate you watching & taking the time to comment 🥰
Should try walkers Shortbread fingers 🎉
We have walkers in Australia, Deans from Scotland is the superior shortbread in our opinion 😋
St Andrews is a great place, hope you enjoyed it
Loved it! Such a beautiful part of Scotland ❤️ Thank you Liam!
VCR - Video cassette recorder.
Yes my brain froze for those few seconds 😂 grew up in the 80's so definitely know what a VCR & VHS tapes are. Thanks for watching!
