It is not the German perspective at all. It is the human perspective. That's exactly what the film wants to tell us. Everyone has the same experience. No one wins, everyone loses. War is inhumane.
Agree, my grandfather fought in second world war, my husband fought in Irak. Both were (or are) traumatized for their lifetime, no matter which side they were on.
Some wars are unavoidable and needed to be fought, world war 2, American Revolutionary war, US Civil War, the Scottish war of independence, Hattian revolution etc.
"This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war." -All Quiet On the Western Front
Erich Maria Remarque did not write this quote himself. The publisher made him do it, because they knew that a book that was too critical would not have sold. Of course, the film is an indictment and a confession and nothing else.
It's good that the German perspective is shown, as far as I'm concerned that happens too little. In WW2 there were also, for example, Germans such as General Blaskowitz who stood up against evil. It would do Hollywood to honor these people more by making a good movie about them. Making choices is not always black or white
Well this is based on a German book. It's one of the most powerful books on war ever written. Everyone in the world should read it. "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war."
One really has to wonder what country you are from to glorify someone like Blaskowitz in this way. Hopefully not German because every German should know
I’ve read the book and I’ve seen the Hallmark movie starring Richard Thomas. It’s one of my favorite war movies. World War I has always fascinated me. It was a war between the grandsons of Queen Victoria that set in motion the death of millions of people in two world wars. The Great War revolutionized the business of killing in mass. It started as a continuation of the Franco-Prussian War, with armies massed in regimental grandeur. But quickly devolved into a intrenched meat grinder. All Quiet on the Western Front tells this story masterfully.
An absolutely incredible film. It was hard to hold back tears in some scenes. Hats off to the producers of this film as they knew what they were doing.
Yea I've never felt as emotional as I had during that movie. Really is a masterpiece and convinced me to keep my Netflix longer, though I'm sure it's success has little to do with Netflix itself.
I'd love to see this movie in theater if possible. It's one of those iconic movies you never forget seeing in theatre. Schindlers list was one of those war movies for me. Saving private Ryan is another.
I am so looking forward to this. The 1930 film adaptation is a masterpiece; the 1979 made-for-tv version is meh; this version looks like it will be truest to form.
The supporting role played by Daniel Brühl (Mathias Erzberger) represents a historical person who was murdered by the National Socialists while taking a walk in 1921! Because he signed this contract.
It just came out today. I have watched it and I feel that the film has perfectly captured the horrors of what went down during the war. From joyful spirit and laughter of young men turning in horror.
man this movie was amazing and sad the entire time, but i hate that so many men had to die in this senseless war, it is tragic what happened to these brave men, they knew they were walking towards death and still had the guts to move forward regardless of the obstacles ahead, RIP to any soldier that died in any war ever
1:55 what almost always drives me mad about this scene is the hand on the right. The damn hand. Like the soldier in his final moments reaching for barbed wire just to hold something in hand. Barbed wire of all things, a terrible symbol of trench warfare but the only little piece of comfort this soldier can have in his final moments. That one hand is so powerful
What drives me crazy when I watch War films, is imagining how the hell I would survive the insurmountable odds these men go through, then I realize that my ego is trying to cope with the fact that I would be one of the corpses dug halfway into the mud.
It's not really the individual man. Most of these guys didn't want to be there. It's nation wide political decisions that end in clusterfu k like this.
This movie shows how young man where be manipulated from the teachers, parents and policy to glorify the war. This movie is on the same level like Saving Private Ryan.
This are the roots of world war 2. They knowed that the sanctions of the Treaty of Versailles will create suffering. It wasn’t the right thing to humble such a proud strong nation that much by taking their colonies, taking big parts of their country and letting them pay a huge amount of money for a war Germany hasn’t even started. As a reminder: Austria declared war on Serbia. Then Russia declared war on Austria. Then Germany declared war on Russia and French. Then England and the rest declared war on Germany.
Except, what happens when you harbour feelings of hatred and guilt, someone kills your friends, and they seemingly get away with it? So you find them out and kill them, and... the cycle of hatred continues until... [I can not write the solution here].
I kind of liked how the original films were in English, and meant for an American audience. At the time, a lot of people definitely hated the Germans, but the film made them human- almost indistinguishable from the American soldiers save from their uniforms.
It could not have been easy, having to ask German men to act as their dead and dying Great Grandfathers, to show their struggle, and pain, then get back up after, and process what it could've been like from a safe environment (set) Must of been a traumatizing experience of it's own.
Looks like a good movie. Only thing about the trailer is French soldiers using flame throwers. Germans first used them against French in battle of Verdun. To my knowledge Allied soldiers did not use flame throwers in WWI. Of course in WW2 American soldiers used them against the Japanese who hid in caves, etc.
