RUclips actually recommended your video to me~ I actually love what you're saying about going to conventions to make friends. I always go hoping to make new friends, but usually only end up following someone on Instagram and becoming a number. It doesn't feel nice. It's so hard to make connections when everyone just wants followers instead of friends.
I also have that ick (≖_≖ ). Like people like that do not own the character(Only the creator of the character), unless it is a personal OC. I like to stray away from people like that. ʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔ

I think you hit many points quite well, and it's wholesome to learn you were able to build close friendships overtime. That is really what should have resulted from cons and cosplay. Unfortunately, after having done both for over ten years and I still do them, I've watched it all become as you well put it, a clout contest. Oh goodness, ESPECIALLY at Katsucon, it's like everyone with 2K+ followers ACTS like they're hot shit or too important to deal with us non-content cosplayers/congoers. Gone are the days when we remembered that in the end we are ALL supposed to be fans. Make no mistake, clout-chasing, people like bread-boy and deadpoolpity are only symptoms of the root illness. Social media brought many great benefits to the convention space and cosplay community, but it also made the people within them far too comfortable and blinded by their perceived greatness. EDIT: I'm sorry if I'm coming off as antagonistic. I have no real issue if anyone decides to make a career/make money out of cosplay. Definitely no issue with uploader. I just heavily dislike how people get treated in the community as a result of it. I also feel so much more strongly about this because I have a niece in her early teens who already does her own budget cosplay (of course, I do pay for her cosplays when she asks). It's heart breaking to think that she will eventually have to step into such toxicity.
@@Leidern long story short- social media is a blessing and a curse. i’m right with you on everything you said! People have to realize they aren’t celebrities fr, in the “real world” nobody could care less about who they are and honestly, neither could most con goers lolll
Somebody had to say it! Yessss I got so turned off from what happened with the cosplay community between 2019 & now! It is to the point where I feel so out of place for not obsessing with those things and it’s a lot harder to find genuine friends in the space
Idk if this is just me,but being in cosplay a part of it for me is being anonymous without having the expectations of anyone, to be able to walk up to people and ask for pictures or roleplay without shame, personally it just sounds weird to me and i'd prefer to have the anonymity or just have a few people watch small little videos i might make
This was great! You hit a lot of good points and I was nodding my head in agreement whenever you talked about the important things. Thanks for the mention as well
I did my first cosplay for Halloween (Nero from Black Clover) this year and I was terrified to show people on social media for this exact reason (the community being toxic in general not the clout thing bc i’m not famous but clout seeking is an issue in the community). People can be so mean if it’s not 100% accurate or if you act a little “cringe” (most of the time the person they’re targetting is just neurodivergent). I thought the whole point of cosplay was that everyone gets to embody the character in their own way because it makes them happy. That’s all that should matter. I love seeing everyone’s unique cosplays especially because show runners often intentionally have the characters look many different ways throughout the series for that reason. There’s a difference between helpful advice and non-constructive hate. Also some ppl hate all the characters I love because they’re “too feminine” or “annoying”. Or they think if people don’t have the time or money to cosplay all the time, they must not be a serious or legitimate cosplayer. Meanwhile they defend and platform ppl who are actually terrible just because they have good cosplays and because want to get noticed by large creators. Also- first time viewer of your channel! Great video. Just had to subscribe. Looking forward to hearing more about your extensive experience in the Cosplay/anime community (if/when you feel up to it of course). And yes- you’re gorgeous and you absolutely ate that Cosplay up and if you did say you owned the character, I wouldn’t disagree lmao.
@@melodypond1003 I totally agree- you should be able to portray your character however you choose as long as you’re not causing harm- it’s supposed to be fun! Thanks so much for the sub and the encouraging words!
Girl the way it is so important to create more genuine videos like this. Seeing cosplay videos under the premise of numbers, brand opportunities, and free con passes, the internet has curated this reality that cosplay is not anything more than just that. The ability to find a unique social sphere has been an important part of the anime convention scene, especially considering that anime was not at all as popular as it is now. Liking cosplay and anime was unconventional, making conventions a rather transformative meeting ground for fans. I think the illusion of the internet gave people a very different perspective now. And while I'm happy there's more opportunities to share things like common cosplay taboos, clearly we still see problems perpetuate and watch as some cosplayers mistake the fun and lighthearted part of cosplay as an excuse to neglect morals and ethics. Cosplayers need to remember sometimes that they're human, not in a negative sense but in a like "don't neglect your and other's humanity" kind of way. This video really helps to humanize cosplay and reminds us why we nerds even wanted to go to cons in the first place.
@@thedanniannie yes wow u said it so well! Some people really don’t know what it was like to do this kind of thing back when it “wasn’t cool” and like how special it was because it was just a space to be you and enjoy something special without judgement. Some of my closest friends are ones I made in my early con days, way before people really cared about social media stuff. And the ones i usually stay in touch with are the ones that can still stay grounded and like not lose sight of the humanity behind it all.
Sadly, it's a lot of insecurity. People are so desperate to have attention, but outside of things like this, they don't put in the work to meet up as friends outside of social media or online. I think a large portion of these problems would decrease if people, you know, actually hungout. Looking at what is happening with the election, ironically, one of the biggest reasons people voted for Trump is that they thought associating themselves with him would bring them their own fortune and fame. It's ludicious. If that sounds ludicrous to anyone reading this who only wants to hangout with someone because of their fame, imagine how much that mirrors the aforementioned behaviour. It's really messed up. Luckily, most cosplayers are lovely humans, but, unfortunately, sometimes you blindly follow these people you don't know!. And, you think they'll care enough about you to make you look important. You are one of millions of people. It's OK to not be famous. Most people will never be wealthy or well-known, and that's OK. Be the best you you can be and don't be so desperate that you have to ride someone else's coatails (or, in Trump's case, use daddy's money) to get to where you want to be. Be kind, be considerate, and, at the end of the day, recognise that almost all famous people got there simply because of luck (some through hardwork- like actually building/sewing all of their cosplays on their own, but the largest factor in fame is absolutely luck). I think, though, one of the worst things is people who join the community and don't actually really care about it. They just ride off the back of a fandom to try to get famous and know nothing of the characters or the community. No, you don't need to be an expert, but you should actually care. As for the question you presented, I am a firm believer that people are inherently good. It scares me at how much people seem to almost enjoy tearing others down for their own attention. Why are we living in a world where this is OK? It's heartbreaking. Kindness, believing people truly mean well in most situations, not jumping to conclusions, not holding grudges, and offering others grace is the best thing we can do in any community.
