Augusta Chiwy, the half-Congolese woman from the show, was a nurse in Brussels who came to visit her family in Bastogne for Christmas when the Germans attacked. She died in 2015 and is buried in Bastogne.

Btw, I noticed that most people seem to instinctively think that it's his bones sticking out at 7:48, but it's actually shards of wood coming from the exploding trees, hence why the doc is saying it's not that bad.

The 2 nurses were Renée Lemaire who rescued 6 wounded from the bombed aid station but was killed trying to rescue a 7th (she was buried in a parachute out of which she wanted to make a wedding dress) and Augusta Chiwy who had a Belgian father and a Congolese mother (she lived to 2015).

"Every boot is a nine"...it's an old Army joke.
Out in the field if you lost your boots like Toye did then you just grabbed whatever you could find and you made it fit. If it was too big you stuffed anything into the toes to take up space. If it was too small you cut some of the leather uppers to let your feet fit in. Basically "every boot fits." :)

Augusta Chiwy's participation was forgotten after the war when she went back to her life. Until historian Martin King happened onto her while researching the battle of the Bulge and brought her story to light. In 2011 she was made Knight of the Order of the Crown by the king of Belgium and was awarded the Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service by the US.

The nurses are based on real people, Renee Lamarie and Agusta Chiwy (called Anna in the show). They were both nurses visiting family in Bastogne when the Germans attacked and volunteered in the aid station set up by a unit of the 10th Armored Division. The aid station used by Easy Company was a different one, so it is unlikely Renee and Doc Roe actually met, but it's possible. During the Christmas Eve bombing raid, the aid station was hit. Accounts vary, but Renee was either killed outright or made a number of trips back in to rescue wounded, succumbing on her last trip. Agusta was either in a neighboring building or blown through a wall by the explosion, but survived. She lived to the age of 94, passing away in 2015. The writers chose to include them in the segment to honor their memory.

Bastogne, dam. But here is some more facts. Winters felt that everyone look up to him as CO, so he kept his standards high as an example to his men by shaving even in those extreme conditions. The morphine syrette used in WW2 was strong, if you took 1 you're good if you took 2 you're dead. Also that part were it shows the supplies being dropped in the middle of the line between Easy and the Germans is a road now separating them. Toye had frostbite not trench foot, once I had to go up and down 2 mountains with trench foot, it wasn't fun. If the air force are our angels on our shoulders then the medics are the angels holding our hands when we need it the most. Merci Augusta et Renée les anges dont elles avaient besoin

Medics have to be next level brave. They don't carry weapons and have to run around on the battlefield in the midst of fire to get to people. Also, they accidentally shot at their own people during the drop because the Allied and German lines were hopelessly mixed up with all that snow in the forest. They were literally on top of each other.

Its the word "rescued" that the men of the 101st objected too. To a man they would agree they needed relief, additional troops, supplies and the wounded to be evacuated. That being said their job was to hold the town and prevent the Germans from gaining use of the roads. They did their job, keeping, the kept the germans out of the town and bogged down for nearly 10 days until the 3rd army was able to break through and relieve.

I seriously can’t fathom the bitter cold these men had to endure during the battle of bulge. I personally hate the cold so these men were crazy tough.
My grandfather said Korea was insanely cold as well, he was a replacement in the 1st marine division after they came back from the Chosin reservoir area.
I still can’t believe that Richard winters was only 26 years old when he was leading these men. I’m older than him at this time in my life and still blows my mind a 26 year can be so mature like that lol

I shared this on another reaction but the nurse depicted in episode 6 is Renee Lemaire, whose parents lived in Bastogne and she went to visit them in December '44 from Brussels. She wasn't able to leave due to the German forces surrounding them and she and another nurse (Augusta Chiwy) volunteered at the aid station. When the aid station was bombed, Renee was able to help 6 soldiers out of the building but was killed when she went back to attempt to rescue another wounded soldier. This series doesn't pull any punches, and it stays pretty close to the actual facts, making it much more difficult to watch. It is not easy to follow the men of Easy, but I believe it is necessary in order to honor the sacrifices that so many made.

I watched The Longest Day, when I was much younger and I begin to understand what we now call ptsd and the fact every soldier in WW2 dealt with it, in their own way. I then rewatched many war movies from different eras and different perspective dealing with it. And yes, the medics dealt with the mental stresses of war as much, if not more than regular soldiers.

I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman (Medic) in Vietnam (3 Tours). I had 4months of basic medical training and two months of combat medical training when I was assigned to the Marines. The army medical training is similar. They don't just say you're a medic. There are not enough men that volunteer to be a medic. Tests are taken while you are in training. If your test shows an aptitude for medicine, then they ask you to volunteer or just send you to school to be a medic. If you are not good at it they send you back to infantry. Most medics that have been in combat can do the job as well as or better than some doctors or nurses.
According to the Geneva Conventions medics are not to carry offensive weapons. I never carried a weapon. During times not in combat the medic is supposed give first aid lessons to his whole platoon frequently. So, anyone can take over basic first aid if the medic is killed. They can carry a pistol for their own protection and the protection of the one they are working on.
Those two medics in the same fox hole should never be close to each other during combat (That’s one of the first things you learn). One of my tours in Vietnam I was on a ship on the Co Chien River in the Mekong Delta. Me and another corpsman were the only medical personnel on board. Being the only medical person onboard I did everything medical. If you were on a ship or with the Marines, you were called Doc. We were taught that during combat conditions we were to be on opposite ends of the ship. The 2 corpsmen we replaced were together during a fire fight and they both got killed. You never remember all the ones that you have treated but you never forget the ones you can’t save.

@Mair & Sophie If you haven't happened to check yet, the name of the town is pronounced like this
"Bast" (sounds like "mast" but with a B) tonge (same sound as "stone" minus the S)
Bas-tone is the sound written phonetically is how you say "Bastogne"
Which a town in Belgium and was a six way intersection of roads,
the north eastern ones leading back to Germany through thick forest,
others go to Netherlands and France,
one directly to Paris, making it a critical juncture of control because vehicles,
troops move fastest and safest on roads once they are cleared of enemy,
and make for a defensive point trap if the enemy tries to take them.
    I hope this helped.

The Battle of the Bulge was a German last ditch effort with a goal of retaking Antwerp because the allies were using it to resupply the front lines. The reason the Germans wanted Bastogne is because it was a crossroad that led in like five different directions. The Germans had tanks, and tanks move better and faster on roads. The other thing is, Eugene Roe was a medic, the Germans shot medics if they saw them, THAT is why they left them back when on a combat patrol, they didn't want anything to happen to him. The reason the Germans killed medics any chance they got is because it meant many more allied soldiers would die without a combat medic. As someone else also pointed out, they were being shelled by artillery, you can't shoot back at that unless you have your own artillery or go on the offense and overtake the artillery position, which they eventually did when they took the town of Foy. By digging in and holding Bastogne, it screwed up the German battle plan for the Bulge operation, they were on a very tight timetable due to lack of things like gas.

The 101st was sent in there with next to nothing and told that their mission was to hold the line against the German counter offensive until relieved. Which is exactly what they did. Saying Patton came to their rescue carries the implication that the 101st was mucking about and got themselves into trouble they couldn’t handle and they needed saving. Nope they did the mission that they were ordered to do and they held the line against the Germans until reinforcements came to relieve them. On a side note I had a relative who was a tanker in the war. He landed at Normandy, and later helped to break the encirclement of the 101st in the battle of the bulge, and later participated in the liberation of a concentration camp. That’s damn near all I know about his experiences because that’s about all he ever had to say on the subject. You could see it in his eyes though, war is a helluva thing.

Officers and medics are prime targets. During Vietnam, a medic had a life expectancy of about 15 minutes in the bush. My husband was a combat medic with the Marines. Whrn they were deploying to Vietnam, he wasn't going to wear any corpsman identification and carry his gun because his men knew who he was. Fortunately, they were turned around because the drawdown was starting in Vietnam.

I read of an incident where a British medic was shot in the midst of battle and the German and British officers called for a cease fire, and the German officer apologized for the shooting of the medic and they collected their respective wounded before re-starting the battle. Now the Japanese... they regarded medics as prime targets.
