    The ATH-M50s, before the "X" version came out, were the exact same headphone without the detachable cord and they used to be $99 on amazon, and would even go on sale for $89 every once in a while. For that price they are a great bang for buck, but for $170, there are better options, and that's why they were so commonly recommended.

      @NviForce 10 лет назад +1

      I tested the Ath-m50x's, then decided that nope, my Akg k550's are a lot better, with a better sound and comfort.

      Those are also a $200 dollar headphone compared to what used to be a $100 dollar headphone. They are probably much better.

      I never liked the M50s, but I do like the M50x, the Xs are much better headphones and deserve the extra money you pay for them.

      SnypeUXD The X's are the same exact headphones, with the same driver, the difference are slightly softer padding, a little less clamping force, and the detachable cord.
      They have the same drivers, and the same exact sound., 70 dollars isnt worth a detachable cord to me.

    I was looking at the audio technica gaming headset that sells for 300 bucks, but as I looked more into it, I end up getting 900x's, a modmic 4, and an amp/dac (fiio e10k) for about 10 dollars cheaper.

    I just bought a pair of beyerdynamic DT 880 pros. I adore the sound of theses! Couldn't ever switch back to my old gaming headset, although it was really one of the few good gaming headsets. But guys, of you ever happen to need a new headset and you have about 200 bucks lying around, just buy DT 880 pros and throw a cheap no name mic or a modmic on them, they just sound amazing!

    • @hauptmann25

      hauptmann25 the only difference between the pro and premium are clamping force, cord type, and overall look.the headband is also a little better on the premium. The sound is the same in both of them

      they also need amping.. people who don't have serious amp/dac/soundcards shouldn't be considering dt880s.

    Still in love with my ath-m50 I bought two years ago for 130$. Ear pads could be better, but I never had the thought of "I wish music would sound different" on these (dubstep lover with a big appreciation for mids and highs), and never used an equalizer. I will probably buy an open pair for gaming in the future because of the recommendations, but I won't ever regret my purchase of my m50's.

      I use the m50x as portable headphones and there aren't too many alternatives. The mdr7506 I would need to put another cable on them. The custom one pro's only come with one cable. They are already 20% more expensive than the m50x where I live, if you buy the extra cables that the m50x already come with, they are nearly twice the price. It's possible that the beyerdynamics do indeed sound substentially better, but I have my doubts.

      IsawUupThere XPT100s are pretty comparable since they're rebranded $200 headphones being sold for $99.

    I looked up the frequency response curves myself. Compared the m50 against the beyerdynamic custom one pro and the sony 7506. I have NO idea what you are talking about. Much better frequency response curve? Where? Actually the m50s destroy both of them in the highs. Overall much better. Explain that to me.

    I've been using the DT-770 with an amp for music and they're stunning. the bass response is amazing as well as the sound quality. As far as gaming goes, I'm sure there are better options but it's really good for a closed headphone.

    Gaming headsets, 5.1, 7.1, 9.1 and the recently released 11.1 by Panasonic ( I live in Japan ) are all gimmicks! Open back headphone will deliver the best headphone 'surround quality'. You want surround you buy a surround sound system which I also use ( BOSE ) but the kids need to sleep. So I highly recommend Audio Technica ATH A2000x which Im using for my PC and yes it works for PS4 via the controller.
    High ends headphone will do the rest, no amps, no dac, nothing! Plug & play baby!!!!

    You guys keep mentioning noisy environments as if they're uncommon or as if any reasonably serious gamer wouldn't be in one, but I've been to plenty of LAN events where the noise ranges from people talking and moving chairs, to people talking loudly and laughing, to music being blasted.
    I'm using a closed headset with large drivers so I can drown out all the environmental noise on those events. I also love the bass response and they're very comfortable. (Also wireless is sweet) I simply can't justify getting a two pairs of headsets for different occasions.

    • @Magnulus76

      Sometimes the isolation is preferable. I don't wear open headphones in the summer here because the air conditioner just creates this white noise effect that masks the sound somewhat. I also prefer to use my headphones at reasonable volumes and spare my hearing.

      Tek Syndicate Right now I use my m50's for everything- gaming, music, movies, etc. My only complaint is the comfort after an hour or two wearing them, the cups aren't all that comfy and have flattened out in the 8 months I've had them. I have roommates so sometimes in a loud environment, sometimes (like at 3am) it is quiet. I'm gonna try and get an open set to compare for myself, and I do love the hardware review/recommendations videos you guys make. I try to get as many opinions as I can before I make a purchase and your content is quality. Thanks again.

    I have a question. Are there any headphones (headphones not headset) with 7.1 surround under the price of 55 dollars?
    EDIT: After I watched the entire video, I heard you say you don't like surround. Well are all these stereo? Why do you not like surround? Or perhaps are they 5.1 and not 7.1? I really need that directional sound and good bass (not those crappy muddy sounding headphones you know) for all the explosions and I also listen to alot of metal and rock so that'd be great. Waiting on a reply! :D

    • @Hexthrill
      @Hexthrill 10 лет назад

      Yes but there is stereo, 5.1 surround and 7.1 surround, I'm not sure on how that works but I really want good directional pinpointing, and it seems people say 7.1 is the best, but I only see that on headsets and not headphones.

    • @ThePaulg123
      @ThePaulg123 10 лет назад +6

      Hexthrill you basically want a good pair of stereo headphones and a device that outputs virtual surround sound through the headphones, I have a pair of beyerdynamic MMX 300 connected to an astro mixamp on my ps4 , the sound quality is better in stereo but the difference in percievibg sounds from all directions is much better with the virtual surround from the mixamp for fps games etc, helped me countless times when hearing enemies running behind objects trying to get 1 up on me

    • @KarlRamstedt
      @KarlRamstedt 10 лет назад +21

      You have two ears, why the fuck would you need more than two speakers in your headphones? (hint: you don't)
      The reason you are able to perceive directional audio is because your brain figures out the direction based on how the sound is distorted by your surroundings.
      Hence virtual surround is just as good as any 7.1 headphone with several speakers, if not better.
      There are several programs that enable virtual surround sound.
      Here's a little bit of reading on that:

      Yes! I use the 558's modded (took out the little foam pads in the earcups as well as removing the twist-lock proprietary mechanism) with a V-Moda Boom Pro. I love the ModMic as well, I just find the Boom Pro to be more practical, as it's only one cable instead of two with the ModMic.

      @harkdandy 8 лет назад +4

      +Hal Capps I like the twist lock..

    • @halcapps2610
      @halcapps2610 8 лет назад +1

      The twist lock didn't necessarily bother me, just the fact that I had to have that proprietary cable. So, in taking the twist lock out and using a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, I'm able to plug in any aux cable I like, which is great and let's me use that Boom Pro. I saved the twist lock and the foam pads just in case I ever have a desire to put them back in.

      +Jack Hart I have thought about doing this, does it really turn them into 598s? Im not even sure if I would like that too much, I have tried 598s before and the difference was very subtle but for some reason I liked the 558s more especially with regards to bass.

    • @JackOfHarts96

  • @ronochow
    @ronochow 10 лет назад

    I got the M50x cause people had recommended them and all the reviews I've seen so far have been good minus the price maybe. I got them after getting the IM50's from ATH and they impressed me enough to consider the "large" version. The M50x do sound very clear and no overly pronounced area. I did want the closed as people in the house are practicing piano or watching TV loudly and I don't want others hearing my music when they're working in the same room. They're fairly light and comfortable. I haven't owned enough headphones to judge but they definitely sound better in clarity than the ones I have owned (Kraken pro, Kraken Forged [they were half price], some IEM and BA which don't count as headphones). Some details that were nice are the 3 different cables I can use, and the pouch is a nice touch. Probably another thing is what is available here. The design is simple, clean but nice. Build quality is pretty good. But I would agree they're probably over hyped.

      I'm using AD700x with ModMic 4.0 and it is an AMAZING combination. AD500x or AD700x are extremely open sounding, so you will get a HUGE soundstage (directional audio) however the bass is quite low on these but for gaming that's what you want because you need the mids for footsteps for instance. ModMic sound quality is great and it really does cancel out background noise very well.

    What I use for both gaming and just everyday video watching/editing for the other channel I am a part of is the Logitech H800. Sure, they're $100, but they're bluetooth compatable, they're wireless, and they are rechargeable. Everything about this headset is nice, and it's worked for such a long time so far. My old rig use to have me just using my normal webcam mic and I would use normal wired headphones, which I just didn't like having the cord sitting on my right shoulder as I'm trying to play games. It provides about the same quality audio, and they seem really good so far. I highly recommend them.

I can bring it along with me if away from my desktop. You can even use it on your mobile devices. iPad with the usb adapter or Android with the OTG cable should work as well. For the OTG though make sure your device can power it, if not you need to buy a OTG cable with power cable.

Once I live alone I'll look into some open headphones but to anyone out there in a noisy environment (or possibly wanting to use headphones while out in public) I can full heartedly recommend Audio Technica's ATH-M40x's. Amazing sound quality, very comfy, and a very nice price.

    The reason the m50's are always suggested is long ago they were great bang for the buck. I want to say I heard they used to be around $100 most of the time, and in the past few years you could often find them that cheap on a good sale, like around the holidays. For that price point they were often suggested to new audiophiles, and so they suggest it too, and so on and so forth...basically an echo effect. The issue now is because there are so many echoes, any audiophile who's owned a lot of cans and has a lot of experience is now drowned out by it all. And while the m50s can sit on all this, others have caught up or had the ability to produce better offers for the money, but again often still drowned out. I own some m50s because of this probably, but I can't say I regret it, just wish the pleather wasn't flaking/cracking after 2 years(give or take) of pretty heavy use.

    I got the Beyer DT 770's for my recording studio and yes they are close backed but that is deal to make them more isolated. Does mean the bass is quite weak but I needed the isolation. Other than that they are comfortable and have great freq response. Closed usually have weaker bass than open backed so just bear that in mind. But if you get open backed it means that some audio is escaping out of the backs of the headphones and perhaps that could end up being picked up by your desktop condenser microphone. Although I have never had my own pair of open backed headphones.

    I went with the HD558'S. It's a good headphone for the price I got it at $80, but my complaints are that the cable it comes with is way too long with a cheap 3.5mm adapter and that it's not that portable. I fixed the cable problem by just buying a replacement cable from eBay for about $15. But if you're just looking at headphones mainly for your PC, then these are pretty solid. If I didn't get these I probably would have went with the Audio Technica 700x. I'm obviously not an audiophile but these are pretty good, much better than my old Logitech headset. Open back is definitely the way to go for gaming.

    I'm considering switching from gaming headsets to this set up, but I have a question about open-headphones.
    I tend to not use push-to-talk at all, but wouldn't the sound from the headphones just bleed straight in to the mic? Even with push-to-talk ... when I speak will it just be accompanied by the sound of the game?
    Tyler mentions in this that one of the mics will cause you to want to use push-to-talk, but you guys don't mention this about the open headphones.
    I asked an open-headSET owner and he said it doesn't pick up the audio because the mic on the headset (some sennheiser gaming set) is a mic that picks things up from a specific direction and you just point it at your mouth, but mod mics seem like they're going to pick up everything.
    I've never used a pair of open headphones for any amount of time, so I really have no idea what it's like. Can anyone confirm whether or not this is a problem?

    My biggest limit when it comes to getting a new setup for streaming is my desk space. I basically have both my TV and my computer monitor, both of which are 22 inch, my Wii U and cable box, keyboard, speakers for both screens, and my mouse on a coffee table. The amount of space I got for the mouse is the size of my hand.
    With that said, I may have to get a headset with a built in or removable mic. Your videos on this are pretty informative, so I will take your thoughts into account.

    • @TheK1ngFiasco

      Another option is to get a small boom/arm that can clamp onto your desk and then hold the mic above your keyboard near your face. Sort of like what they are doing in this exact video. Those arms can be found for around $40. But obviously making a headset like they are instructing in this video will make things pretty compact too.

    When you are discussing the M50X, the Beyerdynamics Custom One and the Sony MDR-7506 you say that the Custom One and the Sony has "much better frequency response curves" than the M50X.
    Well, looking at the same website you use, headphone.com, the M50X and the Beyerdynamic has almost identical curves, except for some slightly better mids on the Beyer.
    The Sony seems to be all over the place, especially if you look at the Frequency Response Raw-graph. In the normal graph the Sonys seems to lack in bass compared to the other ones. I get the feel of M50X-hate because of hype-hate here.

    Looking for something to do double-duty for travel and gaming budgeted ~$100. More concerned with sound leakage and durability than SQ. I'm thinking that means I should be looking for closed-back designs, and I keep coming back to M40x, would the MDR7506 be significantly better in terms of SQ? I was looking at the frequency response graphs, but I'm no expert. It looks like the M40x will be slightly more bass-heavy, but the MDR7506 is overall more flat across the range. How are the MDR7506's in terms of durability?

    Although I agree with Logan on most of his choices here, I can't support the fact that they did not include the Logitech UE 6000. They're one of the most open sounding closed back headphones you can buy thanks to an air chamber behind the driver. My theory is: they didn't include it because it's 50ohms in passive mode which means you'd need a headphone amplifier, which will drive the price up a bit (its also noise canceling with a built in amp that's powered through 2 AAA batteries, but it also EQs the sound and closes their impressively wide sound stage). I own the shure se215s as well and can say they're great for music, but they have a very closed soundstage as well, I'd recommend for gaming the sennheiser momentum in ears as the sounds stage is much more expensive and they have an aluminum construction rather than the shures plastic, you will however lose shures ingenious detachable cables, so it's up to the end user to device.

    Attach a Zalman mic, and you have your gaming headset for just 35€.

    I listen to gobs of symphonic music and music/game scores, plus gaming of course. Would the Audio Technica ATHA 500x be my best bet for $100? If I were to pick these, open or closed if I prefer my music quality first?

    I have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD900x and I would highly recommend them. They are perfect for gaming. You can find a used pair on ebay for about 100 bucks. 300 dollar MSRP
    They are not as comfortable as they say. People with slimmer heads might have a problem with the headset sliding down.Linus did a good video on how to fix that problem when he reviewed the gaming version of these headphones. I have a size 7 1/2 head and I noticed when I move my head the headset moves slightly on my head. I usually have to take these off after a hour or so to give my ears a break because they do cause some pressure on the top of my ears. Overall I would rate about a 6/10 on the comfort scale.
    The vocals on these are insane. I dont know of another pair of headphones that can make vocals sound better than these for 100 bucks. The soundstage is very big and you can isolate instruments very well especially piano. Audio these are 9/10. -1 for not having the best bass.
    Gaming is a 9.5/10 for these things. Nuff said.
