    You may have noticed, the lyrics have changed dialect. Normally Saiki and Miku use the Tokyo dialect, but for their reimagining of their song "Secret My Lips", they also changed the lyrics to use the Kyoto dialect, which is the home of the Geiko (Geisha). Changing the name to Band Maiko was word play and an April fools joke, as the Ladies changed their website, twitter accounts, instagram pages the whole shebang, saying they had changed their name and image to apprentice Geiko or "Maiko", they released this song, which as I wrote above is a reworking of their song Secret My Lips, with the dialect changed and the addition of traditional japanese instruments. The fan response was so great, they reworked several more songs, plus wrote one song specifically as a Band Maiko song, "Gion Cho", which I also recommend you to watch.

    I like your reactions. Secret MAIKO lips is one of my favourite music videos. I hope that Band-Maid will do some MAIKO content again in the future.
    If you want more Japanese music recommendations:
    Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura (particulary since you liked this one)
    Broken By The Scream - Kokoro Harebare (ココロ、晴レ晴レ)
    Shingeki (神使轟く、激情の如く。) - Shinsoukyoku:Gaia (神奏曲:ガイア)
    PassCode - Flavor of Blue
    Hagane - BlackCult
    Little Lilith - Graffiti

    This was Band-Maid's April Fool's joke! They even removed their social media feeds when they released it, to add to the joke, while telling everyone they were turning to more traditional instruments. It was so well received that they also released an EP of 5 other songs! Last year, Miku's April Fool joke was to reinvent herself as the solo artist Cluppo who sang in her newly invented genre HippyPop, and she has released 4 songs since then. In both cases, these musical jokes ended up giving us great songs that are better than most 'serious' musicians. Try Cluppo's first hit for a joyous time! PEACE & LOVE - ruclips.net/video/kR-FPvYgPjM/видео.html . PS Band-Maid even invented alternate names for themselves for this 1-day joke that lasted a lot longer; older, more traditional names: • Miku → Hatoko (鳩子)• Saiki → Fujiki (富士姫)• Kanami → Kanoemi (叶笑)• Akane → Akatsuki (紅月)*• Misa → Umemisa (梅美沙)

    The drummer Akane is a Snoopy fan too! Band-Maiko started out as an April Fool's joke, but fans loved it so much they came back for another video a year later, then they did an EP of 7 songs done like this. All of the Band-Maiko songs are covers of Band-Maid songs, except for Gion Cho (the second music video, which is very beautiful).

    Hello, こんばんは!!
    Another nice reaction video, thank you for that!
    “Secret Maiko Lips” by “Band Maiko” is the April Fools’ version of “Secret My Lips” by Band Maid. Just check out the date the original video was released 😉
    I haven’t gone in detail through the lyrics but it would seem that they re-wrote the original song using the dialect of Kansai (the region of Japan were Kyoto and Osaka are located) and disguised as Maiko (Geishas in training) because that’s very typical in Kyoto.
    The instruments featured are the Shamisen (guitar/banjo like) played by Misa is and the Koto (horizontal harp-like) played by Kanami. The biwa is a slightly different guitar-like instrument, a bit like a mandolin. I’m not quite sure if they play those themselves or how good they might be at it. If you find those instruments interesting, you should definitely check WAGAKKI BAND.

    They do not tour like that... All the fans would LOVE THAT, but they said it is very hot in these outfits and they can barely move (what they love to do on stage).
    This idea was part of an "April´s Fool" surprise for their fans, they changed their Social Media to Band-Maiko, released that video and said they are Band-Maiko now and not Band-Maid anymore...
    They put in so much effort into that, just to prank their fans (us). One of many details and actions they do that you really feel how much they care about their fans!

    Subsequent to the release of Secret Maiko Lips as an April fools joke they then released a Band Maiko EP with several Band Maid covers plus one original song Gion Cho which is a beauty and shows off Saiki's vocals. They cannot perform as Band Maiko as the costumes are impractical, there are some videos of the making of the Band Maiko MV's, Akane couldn't reach the cymbals and when Kanami dropped her pick she couldn't bend over to pick it up, the outfits are extremely constricting and very warm.

    This was an April Fools joke in 2018!!! Band-Maid said they were rebranding... changing their name to Band-Maiko, a maiko being a Geisha apprentice. They went so far as to change their social media accounts and even their names: Miku = Hatoko
    Saiki = Fujiki
    Kanami = Kanoemi
    Akane = Akatsuki
    MISA = UMEMISA
    "Secret Maiko Lips" is a kind of a cover of
    Band-Maid's "Secret My Lips" Not only did they re-record the song using traditional instruments, but also wrote new lyrics using Maiko/Kyoto styled dialect. It became so popular that they released a EP the next year. "Gion-cho" is an original Band-Maiko arrangement and video!!! Enjoy!!!👍👍🤘🤘🤘

    Great watching your reaction to this! This song was originally an April Fool's joke. Before my time, but I understand they temporarily hid all their other content and implied it was a permanent switch. It was very well-received so they decided to make a Band-Maiko EP.
    Every song on the EP, including this one, is a "cover" of a Band-Maid song, except Gion-cho (which is one of my favourite songs and has a music video). They don't tour as Band-Maiko. The clothes aren't practical to play in (especially drums!). Also I suspect they wouldn't want to rely so heavily on backing tracks for the traditional parts.

    It may be time to dip into the pigeon’s (Miku Kibato) side project - cluppo - Best to start with the first MV - Peace and Love. BM have a tradition of releasing a side project on April 1st - you are unlikely to see Band Maiko to tour, though there are hopes for cluppo as Miku produced enough music for an EP

    👘 For this song, Miku changed the words and phrasing to use a traditional dialect that is identified with Geisha culture.
    A "Maiko" (My-koh) is an apprentice "Geiko" in training. A "Geiko" is a regionally specific version of a "Geisha".
    Although she is from Kumamoto, Miku is very fond of the old capital of Kyoto and visits it whenever she can.
    In BAND-MAIKO, she is known as 鳩子 (Hatoko). Like "Kobato", that's another version of "small pigeon".
    For 'Secret Maiko Lips' Kanami worked with the producer to add virtual traditional instruments like the shamisen, koto and bamboo flute in the studio.
    Miku's shodō (calligraphy) at the beginning spelled out "World Domination".
    - Members BAND-MAIKO names:
    Miku = 鳩子 Hatoko.
    Saiki = 富士姫 Fujiki.
    Kanami = 叶笑 Kanoemi.
    Misa = 梅美沙 Umemisa.
    Akane = 紅月 Akatsuki.

    😂It was an April Fools joke on the fans by the band. Essentially saying they were changing to Band-Maiko.
    This was a 2018 reworking of the Band-Maid song “Secret My Lips” from their first long form album in 2017 “Just Bring It”, adding the traditional instrumentation.
    They also modifying the lyrics to the Kyoto dialect. A Maiko is an apprentice Geisha. Band founder Miku Kobato, rhythm guitarist & backing vocals & primary lyricist, is a fan of the traditional city in Kyoto and travels to Kyoto at least once a year, so she’s familiar with the dialect and the Maiko training program there.
    The Maiko’s were so popular that they repeated the process in 2019, on, I believe, 5 other earlier Band-Maid songs AND wrote the only original Band-Maiko song “Gion-Cho”. Gion-Cho is a very unique and interesting song and it also has a music video. You should check it out!
    Take care and rock on ✌🏼🎸🎼🔥🤘🏼😀

    I always enjoy your reactions. Thank you very much. I try to comment on Band-Maiko's reactions with this explanation, so I know some of you who read this comment section have already read it somewhere else, but I'll post it here as well.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    In all the songs of BAND-MAIKO, Saiki uses the word called "京ことば Kyo-kotoba(Kyoto dialect)".
    The Kyo-kotoba has many special phrases that are different from the so-called "Kansai-ben(Kansai region dialect. Kyoto is included in the Kansai region)", and even if you are from Kyoto, it is not a word that ordinary people other than maiko and geisha use on a daily basis.
    Many maiko are not from Kyoto, but when working as a maiko in Kyoto, it is not desirable to use the dialect of the region in which they were born and raised.
    Therefore, the training content of Maiko includes the acquisition of this Kyo-kotoba.
    The Kyo-kotoba is, so to speak, a "common language" for maiko and geisha.
    ※ "Maiko(Pronunciation is my-ko)" means a person in the apprenticeship stage of Geiko (Geisha).

    Good job kids, like the other 2 billion fans of Band-Maid, it appears you've been captured by some of the greatest music today. The other traditional Japanese instrument is the koto - it's the long time on the floor, looks a little like a harp lying on it's side - there is a good anime that is all about the koto - "Kono Oto Tomare"

    Band-Maiko (a Maiko is a trainee Geisha from the Kyoto region) started as an April fools joke to their fans. On April 1st 2018 Band-Maid's website and RUclips channel was taken down and replaced by Band-Maiko. They said they were now Maiko not Maids and following a more traditional path.
    The 'joke' went down so well that Band-Maiko returned a year later with the song 'Gion-Cho' and a 7 track EP.
    All Maiko songs are copies of Band-Maid songs except 'Gion-Cho' which is a Band-Maiko original. (Secret Maiko Lips is a copy of Band-Maid 'Secret My Lips). Band-Maiko cannot tour, the ladies cannot physically play live dressed like that. For instance, during the making of the video to Gion-Cho Kanami dropped her guitar pick - a member of staff had to retrieve it for her, she could not bend down herself! Band-Maid have played their Maiko songs live, but only in Kyoto, home of the Maiko.

    Band-Maiko started out as an April Fools joke in, I believe, 2018. On April 1, their website was re-branded as Band-Maiko and a bogus announcement that the band was changing its name and image was up, along with this song, which is an existing Band-Maid song called Secret My Lips with room carved out in the mix for some traditional Japanese sounds. The website changed back the next day. Then, the next year, Band-Maiko was back with a song that Band-Maid has never recorded called Gion-Cho. I actually prefer Gion-Cho.
    A Maiko is an apprentice Geisha.

    Miku's Shodo painting says, "World Domination." The song is sung in Kansai-ben, the Osaka dialect; not standard Japanese.
