Free were a great band and underappreciated in the US. I don't like when they get listed as a one hit wonder as they had six great albums and more than one hit in the UK. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke the singer and drummer respectively went on to form Bad Company who had another six really good albums and several US hits. They wrote this song because they needed a song to use live and get the crowd involved and it became one of the biggest rock songs ever.

Andy began piano training at age 5 and trained classically until age 12, when he took up the guitar. By 13 he was playing in East End, West Indian clubs after being expelled from High School in 1968 at age 15. He enrolled ad Hammersmith College of Further Education where he met fellow student Sappho Korner. She introduced him to her father, pioneering Blues Musician and Radio Broadcaster Alexis Korner. Shortly thereafter after receiving a phone cal from JOHN MAYALL who was looking for a Bass player. Korner suggested Andy. Still only 15 he was in a professional band earning 50 pounds per week. That's one of the things that I think we've lost because people want to place labels on music and only offer one particular style for airplay. I was just wondering if there's any particular reason for why one song would always follow the other. Usually dj's mix it up so that they don't have a pattern which might bore some people. I think that in many ways inadvertently lend to some magical lyrics and innovative sounds. A lot of the time the instrument are also expressing the real story and or thoughts, emotions behind the song.

Back in the day, lyrics weren't always important. As long as they worked with the beat in rock songs. When we wrote lyrics to songs, we were thinking, "OK, what rhymes with this word or that word and still fits in the beat syllable wise. Bands like the EAGLES or America, Seals and Croft is where the lyrics were everything most of the times.

@@michaelasay8587 Absolutely....he also did a stint with Queen before the Adam Lambert experiment. Existing Queen members obviously thought so much of his vocal talent to cover Freddie Mercury's songs..great compliment. I love him also in The Firm with Jimmy Page...
