    I just found your channel and love this idea! Good for you guys!
    You can hand pollinate squash with a paintbrush or q tip. Works great!

    A shallow dish with cheap beer in the garden for the slugs works great and or egg shells crushed in the blender . Make a circle around each plant or section. those two things work best... Can also feed the crushed egg shells back to the chickens in their feed and scrambled eggs.

      Just set up some beer dishes in the garden (Although I was very tempted to drink the beer and let the slugs keep eating 😂). I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

    Since we were too poor for my mom to be going to the liquor store she made enough elderberry and blackberry wine to last her the year since both of those are so abundant in the wild in the PNW.
    Hope you get the opportunity and time to forage for things like that.

      Thanks, Betty. We definitely forage for tons of blackberries and plan on getting an elderberry bush soon, too.

    If you buy a blacklight flashlight you can go outside at night and use the flashlight to look over your plants. Inchworms and hornworms will glow under a blacklight

    We found burying a solo cup to ground-level and filling it like halfway with cheap beer is a great natural pest trap, particularly slugs and earwigs!

    • @LovinofftheLand
      @LovinofftheLand  3 года назад

      We have used beer as traps, but we didnt think to bury the container below ground level. Will definitely try that. Thank you.

    If you haven't already look up what parts of different plants are edible. A lot of people don't realize that the leaves of turnips, radishes, and many other cold weather plants are edible as well. Snow peas are another plant that the leaves and stems are edible as well as the pods. Radishes if left to go to seeds grow edible seed pods that are very tasty

    Great video! I loved seeing your garden and the hazelnut milk. Have you been saving the leftover but meat purée for something? I was thinking it blended with dried fruit would make a nice energy ball snack or dessert. I’d love to see a full day of eating video and also if you’ve been doing any canning for winter. Also have you made any turkey jerky?

      Great idea about the leftover hazelnut. We had just been eating it straight as a snack, but love the idea of mixing it with some fruit for energy balls too. Will definitely do that!!!

    Nematodes and parasitic wasps might be a good way of dealing with pests, I use nematodes here in the UK for slugs and leaf miners - they're prey specific, so make sure you get the right ones, but they'll eat your pests. Impressed by your beets, ours were mostly attacked this year, we got 2 super yummy ones though. And purple beans! Ours were great too, really fun for our first year. Our current winter experiment is garlic, plant them in the next couple of weeks and they'll be great! Also lots of pests don't like garlic so planted between other crops and it'll protect them. Check out push pull planting.

    I've found it works better to pull the seeds off asap and throw them in the dehydrator on low for a day or two. Keeps them from molding!

    If you mix some soap and water in a bottle and spay it on the leaves it can keep some of the pests away. Makes the leaves less tasty and the soap can kill them.

    BT Spray works for worms and I believe it is Organic. Lots of people seem to use that to manage their worms issue. For the slugs, some people sprinkle eggshells around the soil.

    • @LovinofftheLand
      @LovinofftheLand  4 года назад

      Thanks Steph. Ya, we have used egg shells, copper wire and beer traps for the slugs. Lol
      What is BT Spray?

    • @smileyschan
      @smileyschan 4 года назад

      @@LovinofftheLand Bacillus Thuringiensis, It is a biological insecticide that is OMRI listed and approved for organic gardening. I use the Monterey brand and you can get it off of Amazon. It seems to be quite the popular one to use and it seems to work for lots of people that have worm issues. For the slugs, Monterey also has a slug prevention called Sluggo. I have never personally used this but I did read it is safe to use around pets and wildlife and it too seems to work for many others.
