Well, yeah; considering how the fairy tale that the Disney version adapted had the humans invite the amount of people by the number of gold plates they have, and that they thought the fairy who wasn’t invited was dead, can you blame Maleficent for it? I highly doubt whoever the fairy was in the original story would be viewed as evil. In fact, it’s the fault of the good fairies, as not only did they try counteracting with the curse and put the rest of the kingdom to a slumber, but the curse lasted a century and the prince that would break the curse wouldn’t show up until a century has passed with the castle covered in brambles.
Maleficent could have easily been the leader of The uprising in the House of Villains episode, instead of Jafar, but her being a background villain actually fits her isolated nature.
@@disneyvillainsfan1666 To be fair, House of Villains happened before Kingdom Hearts gave Maleficent a surge in popularity. Had it come afterwards, they'd probably share the role of leadership.
I got a feeling that a blessing that the OG movie Maleficent would give to Aurora could be a wicked cunning. Ambition and brains to follow. And all Maleficent has to do is just sit back and watch as Aurora's ambition throw everything into war, munching popcorn all the way
Now I’m thinking about Princess Malty/b*tch from the Rising of the shield hero anime (minus the brains part). To make Aurora basically that when she’s older would be the ultimate evil “gift” from the Mistress of Evil to cause endless chaos with the kingdom.
@@brandonlyon730 because unlike Malty, Carmilla's ambition isnt limited to a single kingdom or ruining one person's life. She wants to take from everyone and everything. Sure the motivation is different but the ambition is higher and due to the gift or said cunning and ambition would come from an evil and yet elegant place. That and considering the three other blessings (with Maryweather's often being speculate to be grace) it would make sense for her to be less crude about her plays than Malty which in a way makes her a bit more dangerous
The whole not being invited thing is a part of hospitality customs in the Middle Ages. There was a big difference between not being overtly invited and your presence not being wanted. To not be wanted somewhere was considered extremely rude.
Elenor Audley was so talented that it’s hard to believe she initially turned down the role of Maleficent because of tuberculosis. The fact that Disney waited for her to recover shows how convinced they were that she was perfect she was for the role. And why not? She’s basically Lady Tremaine if given magic powers, when you think about it.
I like to think Maleficent would've given Aurora a proper gift, just one that no one else would have appreciated. Like the ability to talk to dragons, or make thorny plants grow
this IS actually what would ahve happened, according to what we know about local fairy lore of the region. She would have bestowed upon the princess a gift from her particular court, and while the gift may not have been deemed completely useful by human standards, it would have elevated her power and status in the fairy world
More like the gift of sharp wit or intelligence. She knows what's truly important, not like the other, vapid faeries who gave her shallow, superficial things like beauty and dancing.
Maleficent left such a mark in the Disney canon that wouldn't be with the exception of Cruella- until the 80s, that we manage to get a truly competent and threatening villain again with Ursula at the tail-end of the decade, with Sykes, Ratitgan, and The Horned King being argued as steps in that right direction.
I think The Horned King and Ratigan are right up there as villains. They just come from more underrated films. (One could argue The Horned King is actually pretty ineffectual and doesn't do much but he has such imagery.) Especially Ratigan, who should be more iconic then he is, but I guess mouse Sherlock Holmes just doesn't have the branding power.
Maleficent's plan for keeping Philip alive for 100 years-and the implications of what she'd do to him in the meantime-so he's so old and decrepit he can't even really enjoy being the hero was always the creepiest villain plot to me.
The noise her staff makes upon the cobbles of King Stephens court when she call all to attention has lived in my imagination for as long as I can remember, such power and authority were conveyed in such a simple gesture and the sound it created.
Maleficent being so evil she'll destroy a kingdom out of petty spite is amazing. Gray area antagonists and anti-heroes are great and all, but the looming threat of the greatest of evil that must be avoided is even better.
And therein lies the reason why to me... the live action Maleficent movies shall always be steaming piles of noncanon crap in my eyes. They managed to neuter perhaps THE most iconic and vile Disney VILLAIN.
You brough some very good points. The idea that Maleficent is never happy and needs to be evil to be happy makes her even more terrifying but in some ways a bit tragic figure without making her into a sympathetic character like the live action movies. On one hand it's scary that she enjoys all this chaos and evil she spreads, changing from one evil goal to another, but on other it's easy to feel kind sad because, even if she wins, her proud and happiness will never last and she will still be unhappy and full of hate.
What frustrates me so much about "Maleficent" is not only did it soften Maleficent's "I'm evil just because" original personality, but it half-assed the backstory it gave her. It set up the reason for her bitterness, being betrayed by her former lover, and yet after the scene where she curses Aurora, there's no sense of the previous chemistry between her and the king. If you watched the film from that scene onward, you never would've guessed they were ever friends/lovers. Moreover, Aurora's mom was completely wasted as a character. She seemed to sense there was something between her husband and Maleficent but dies offscreen without ever questioning or confronting him about it. I picture this version of the king marrying his wife as yet another act of ambition and, if that were the case, it would be so powerful if the queen uncovered Maleficent's past and drew parallels between it and her own fate of being lured into a purely political, loveless marriage. The film could've done so much more with the "Women standing up to being wronged are cast as antagonists when the true villains are the ambitious men who did said wronging in the first place" theme it clearly was trying to go with.
Maleficent has always been, and will always be, my favourite Disney villain - her design is elegant yet terrifying and Eleanor Audley was the perfect voice cast.
Seriously, Maleficent is just so classical a villainess that she's an icon alongside Jimmney Cricket, Tinkerbell, and one could say Mickey himself. Even though she wasn't the focus, I thought it would be fun to mention that Maleficent shared the same original voice actress with Lady Tremaine. I always like to think of those two as foils to one another. One represents fantastical evil while the other represents all too real mundane evil. You know it would be interesting to think that Tremaine is the reincarnation of Maleficent and that is why she's such a major asshole. And as Cindrella 3 showed she would be as dangerous as Mal if she got her hand on real magic and has a petty streak like her.
And when lady tremaine uses magic, it looks exactly like maleficent's magic (with the bright green and dramatic swirls and all) and guess what colours she wears in cinderella-3, purple.
49:55 Angelina Jolie was actually given the Disney Infinity figure as a gift, she loved it and had it on display in her house until her kids broke it by accident, she was sent another one
Good thing they gave Maleficent a raven because ravens are very smart birds on par with parrots and if you want a smart bird, but you have no access to a parrot, you go with a raven, a crow, or a magpie, i.e. corvids--that and because ravens obviously give off an ominous vibe, befitting of a villain like Maleficent since they're all black; parrots, while smart, tend to be too colorful and too comical to deliver on that visually. Nevermore.
I love how she just shows up whenever she’s not invited to something even if it’d make no sense for her to be there. The Disney princesses could spend the night watching Princess Bride and drinking milkshakes and she’d be like “wHAt ABoUt mE???”
Oh boy that means his Frollo video will be long and detaild one and along with him his 2 guards one of which as Patrick's voice and the villain in Hunchback 2
My guess on why Japan loves Maleficent is because of their love for Dragon Quest, the original JRPG. Maleficent, with her horned head, actuallly looks really similiar to the Demon/Dragon Lord, the final boss of the game (really most games in the series). They really love the Hero-Demon Lord dynamic which may be why she's so popular as a villian there since she's just this evil sorcoress.
Maleficent is one of my favourite Disney villains and one of the scariest ones too, plus If a Sleeping Beauty sequel got made in the early - mid 2000s it could've been about the return of Maleficent (similar to the return of Jafar). She along with Cruella were also an inspiration for Bayonetta.
I tend to disagree that Maleficent is pure evil, and that's it. Maleficent is a fae. While movies like Tinkerbell paint them to be harmless and pure, folklore form before the Victorian era paints a much different picture. In ancient times, they tended to be morally grey, pure evil or mischief makers with a completely different set of morals than us humans. Some folklore even speculates that they are fallen angels. They love messing with humans for the hell of it. And they tended to be like mythological gods where they had over the top emotions and reactions to things like cursing people for small mistakes. Maleficent fits that to a tee. She is dark and twisted, but so are a lot of other fae. She's kinda like an alligator in the sense that she's acting upon her true nature and instinct instead of operating instead a set of normal human mortality like a lot of other Disney villains. Outside of that, the king and queen DID not invite her to an important political event for no reason other than she looks scary. If that were me, I would be very pissed off. Cursing a new born is going too far. But let's face it, if that happened to a real life human, a move like that would've had huge repercussions on a political scale like starting a war.
Fae are often described as mischievous and even dangerous in folklore. They could cause accidents, illnesses, destroy crops, kill livestock, and even cause natural disasters, if humans pissed them off. It was a way to teach children to respect nature, before environmental awareness became a thing.
In the original cartoon it's clear she was going to use her magic to keep Phillip alive just long enough to break the curse to just drop dead in his love's arms.
I remember Maleficent scared me as a kid, but as I've grown older, I've come to really love her. Of course, I also tend to love villains more than their heroes, lel
Ya know, as a kid I never considered that Maleficent was a fairy. I started playing Twisted Wonderland a week or two ago, and they mention Malleus (a male character heavily based on her) as being a fairy. And I was somehow surprised by that. Lol
@@ColinLooksBack Honestly i would love watching a short video of you covering the characters you've already went over that are in the game- though idk if it could even be its own video. I really love watching these and i would love seeing you bring up Twisted Wonderland aha
@@ColinLooksBack Malleus never gets invited to anything, which I thought was a nice little reference to Maleficent getting angry over never getting an invitation and cursing Aurora.
24:10 I think you hit the nail on the head here. Not only was she, presumably, invited, but Mickey was treating her with genuine kindness and respect so, while she may find him overly happy and a bit obnoxious, she gives him the same level of respect he shows her. The reason Hades failed to win her over by acting the same way is likely because his behavior wasn't genuine, it was clear he was putting on an act, which she could have seen as being disrespectful. Then when she sees what Hades is actually like, she respects his power and desire for vengeance.
I think Maleficent's motivation makes a lot more sense (to her at least) then people give it credit for. I think the reason she went after Aurora is because she was punishing the king and queen for breaking bread with her enemies, the good fairies. She probably would have let the princess live her life if the king and queen just stayed neutral in the fairy war.
Most people who are fans of the film seem to. If you look at the plot they are the active characters who make choices and Aurora is more like a McGuffin or a child in a action film they are protecting. Philip also doesn’t make much choices or is in the film.
A common trend I’ve noticed in these early Disney princess movies is that a lot of the focus is on the “goofy/quirky side characters”; the Seven Dwarves from Snow White, the Mice from Cinderella, and here, the Fairies. They end up being more interesting as they’re allowed to have depth, flaws or quirks (personalities basically), which princess/princes typically lack/can’t have for image reasons. This can be applied for the villains too, and why they’re so memorable. That’s just my take on this observation anyways.
I've been waiting for this, a lovely look at the Mistress of All Evil. One of my favorite villains when I was but a small tot sitting hypnotized by our collection of VHS' Also, thank you for confirming my worries about the live action movies and that deciding not to watch them was a good idea. If there is one thing that is truly getting under my skin, it's all these stories that are based on a villain in name only, but more about someone who doesn't want to be a villain or is only a villain because "oh the story is told from the wrong perspective." I get that Wicked was popular, but not even the glitz and glamor of Broadway can hide the streching it does to fit it's narrative. (BTW, I have indeed seen it on Broadway.) It's a trend that just keeps building steam and piles of the bodies of evil in it's wake. If I've said this on a previous video, I apologise, but it really is a sticking point for me.
That was what I didn't like about Wicked to begin with. While I like complex characters, assassinating the overall plot just to shoehorn something to make them more relatable is not something I like. Expanding on something or character redemption arcs are good, or maybe prequels with a character arc with them starting good and slowly becoming evil and showing why they are that way could work, but don't remove what made the original movie good to begin with. Some villains might actually work with adding details to the original from their perspective, but only if there's more grey area in their actions.
Thank you for doing this amazing retrospective series. I can clearly see why Maleficent has so many fans. Very interesting character history. Personally I would have called the second live action movie Maleficent vs the mistress of Evil; since the queen is meant to be the real villain there. Maleficent always delivers an amazing performance. She certainly knows how to bring down the house!
I think Maleficent is similar to Jareth the goblin king from Labyrinth, as they are both part of the fair folk and most of the time they just mess with the heroes with their twisted mindgames
as someone who has played every Kingdom Hearts game, you did pretty well all things considered. Some minor mistakes, but overall a really solid summary of Maleficent's role in the series. :)
As someone who has also played every Kingdom Hearts game (except the mobile, but I followed the story as best I could), this was a very adequate explanation for Maleficent's role. Especially given that Colin's only played KH2.
Basically she is the only Disney villain, along with Pete -the first villain created by Walt Disney-, to have a regular role in the main storyline of the franchise
@@TheHalloweenSpirit Even as a child, I was always confused why they never had a presence outside their own worlds, and even then they would sometimes get sidelined by heartless.
As a huge Magnificent fan, I thank you! Ever since her debut, few Disney villains command such a presence with such a beautiful design! I appreciate the amount of work you've put I to this video and I find myself rewatching multiple times! This is simply fantastic!
I think that Maleficent's evil origin is revealed in her last spoken line when she says "all the forces of Hell." She can't feel joy, or happiness, or anything and her malevolent nature stem from the fact she isn't just a dark fae. No she literally gained her raw magical power from a pact with hell and likely the devil himself. When she unleashes her magical power in full how does it manifest? A dragon, a fire breathing dragon. And what is the devil described as in the Bible? A dragon. It is my belief that she sold her very soul for the power she has, giving her the same outlook in her existence as Dracula in Van Helsing.
11:50 seeing her covering her mouth in that manner is a dead ringer for grief in my opinion,to that she sees their enemies running away,it seem it can be seen.
My favourite fact is that her habit of touching her throat was taken from her voice actress doing it whilst she recorded. This was because she has throat cancer at the time!
Finally you’re back with a Disney Villains retroactive no do some more classic Disney villains like Oogie boogie man, jafar, scar, hades, judge Klade frolo, judge doom, Davy Jones, Gaston, and many more Disney villains
it makes sense Diablo was made more competent and serious. It gives him a different feel from past and future minions, Maleficent would need someone more competent to bounce off of. Plus, she already ahs bumblers in the Goons, so having another bumbelr would be superfluous.
I find it fitting Diablo is Maleficent's smartest servant. Ravens are intelligent birds, confirmed by research to be as smart as monkeys. It's also a common theme in fantasy for a witch or wizard to have a raven companion, an idea possibly inspired by the god Odin from Norse mythology.
It's also possible Maleficent didn't appear as upset as one would think about Diablo being turned to stone is that she likely had a means of changing him back, but simply put the priority of stopping the protagonists over that. If he's stuck at the castle as stone, she could return and change him back once things settled, but if he went back out and was turned to stone somewhere else, she may be unable to find him or he could be destroyed (either from falling or getting smashed in some way)
My goodness, the Maleficient played by Angelina Jolie is one of the biggest disrespects to the character. Not only they had to make huge changes to the story, they also made stupid and unimportant to other major characters. It is always a bad sign when someone tries to improve someone by downplaying others, this is simply meant to fail. Just as Maleficient's origin, nobody had to look stupid or incompetent to make her look evil, she was pure evil because she was pure evil. On other topics, I love that at last someone gives Fauna the credit she deserves. Maleficient truly can't be happy, her satisfaction that comes from hurting others is just like a drug, a temporary pleasure that cost her her entire life (both metaphorically and literally). It also serves as some sort of moral of the fable by it's own, since it shows that the path of evil ultimately leads to unhappiness. Nice video my friend! Always a pleasure to watch them 💖
A lot of Fae lore has that the Unseelie (Literally, not silly/fun) Fey are in a constant competition with the Seelie (Literally fun, amusing. basically good) Fae. By inviting 3 "Good Fairies" Aurora's parents would already be on the Unseelie's blacklist, and Maleficent would be honor bound to show up to rep the unpleasant fey. Then She was told she wasn't wanted, by one of the fairies, so Naturally she's going to have to ruin their Day. If an unseelie fey was invited, or if the 3 good fairies weren't invited, Maleficent MIGHT have not being so hostile. The next problem is that Maleficent is a Local Noble. In Medieval society, Hospitality and respect to your neighbors were important, especially to nobelity. As a regional power player, Maleficent would be entitled to an invitation to any event of significance. This is especially true if nobility from other visiting kingdoms were invited. So by slighting her, but inviting Hubert and his family, along with dozens to hundreds of other nobles, Maleficent was within her rights (as customs of the time) to be upset. Basically Aurora's parents screwed up or were screwed many times over. By Fey standards, they screwed up by not inviting a representative from Maleficent's court, and inviting her rivals meaning an unseelie Fey was going to crash the party. When she showed up, One of the good fairies said the quiet part out loud "You weren't wanted" and basically forced Maleficent's hand by Fairy Honor. Aurora was a victim of the Fey Cold War. By Human standards, they screwed up by not inviting her but inviting a bunch of other nobility and royalty. By excluding her from a essentially a diplomatic goodwill summit, she was right to be suspicious and needed to make her power clear. If Stephen had kept the christening a small family affair, Maleficent wouldn't have any reason to care. Of course seeing as how Stephen was a king and the Christening was for his firstborn and only heir, he was basically obligated by custom to make a deal out of it. Maleficent is Evil. She's dangerous. And she intentionally chose a path to cause as much emotional trauma as possible in her retribution. But she was denied an invitation that she was entitled to. At the very least, inviting other kings, and the "good fairies" was a mistake if they were aware there was an Unseelie Fey who also could be considered a regional feudal lord.
I watched this twice. This is a great video, as always. She really is a superb villain. The ad break was honestly so brilliant, it was one of my favourite parts. I also didn't realize how amazing the role of color plays in Sleeping Beauty plays. 🎉
But can we talk about the scene where she says "And now you must deal with me O prince and all the powers of hell!" That's one badass line, I couldn't believe they put that in a kids movie
42:07 Is it silly that I want Minnie's princess dress? Also 42:08 Clopin!!! He's one of my favorites, I wish he was utilized in the parks more often, he's a perfect choice to host a live show!
you´re missing the very latest game (and soon also anime) version of Maleficent but as a late-teen senior high-school dark fairy boy called Malleus Draconius, who pretty much is a younger and more positive version of herself as a male, at the Japanese version of Disney Villains franchise Twisted Wonderland. His story-arc game for cell hasn´t been released yet. (It had been done the versions for Queen of Hearts, Scar, Ursula, Jafar, Snow White´s evil Queen and lately has started the Hades version of the 7 main-villain themed stories of that magical college - as Hogwarts inspired - where actually all the lead only-male teen versions of the villains aren´t actually so evil and just have several existential issues and the main-plot means to the villains actually getting a HAPPY ENDING for their own avoiding the darker fate of the original villains, although they still being quirky-mischevious twisted-darker antihero guys but not true villains over all.)
I personally don't think she's evil, she's just Unseelie fae. Like, highly dangerous but generally passive if left alone. And even Seelie fae are absolutely vicious when slighted--a royal family should absolutely know what happens when you are rude to a faerie. They don't have our moral compasses, and the strict rules of etiquette is the law of their land.
While that interpretation is fair and understandable, you'd then have to take into account the Three Good Fairies 😅. It's pretty obvious that Disney made the film's plot be about the battle between the forces of good and evil. Maleficent was created for the sole purpose of being the embodiment of malevolence within the world of Sleeping Beauty, just as much as how Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather were meant to embody benevolence. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been any reason for them to name her "Maleficent", which means to do harm or impose malice onto others. Plus, most of Disney's fairies, with Tinker Bell being in the gray area 😆, were all created and intended to be good entities within the realms of their respective narratives. As Colin put it in this video, Maleficent herself just seems to be the odd one out of this group, being the only one to be referred to as a dark or evil fairy.
For Maleficent's involvement with Kingdom Hearts, she is actually the only Disney villain to have anything to do with the overarching plot. I'll explain HER timeline, which jumps around the entire KH timeline, so I'll say when each part of the timeline takes place in regards to 1, 2, and 3. 1. Maleficent is seen in her story in Birth By Sleep. (Before 1 chronologically.) She learns of other worlds thanks to Terra and is interested in the power of the 7 pure hearts from the Disney Princesses, and begins to gather all the Disney Villains. 2. Kingdom Hearts 1 happens for her. However when she is stabbed by Riku, he 'unlocks' her heart, allowing her to time travel when she is defeated as the rules of this universe allow. 3. She travels back to the very start of the kingdom hearts timeline in an effort to learn more about darkness and whats going on and all that. However she finds she is trapped in a digital version of her own story. She laments this fact until one of the 13 primordial darknesses leads her out and tells her everything it can about how the world works, the box, ext... She is then sent into the future using a time capsule when she escapes to the real world. However she needs a body to return to. 4. Kingdom Hearts 2 happens, with Maleficent from the past now returned into the actual timeline and knowing more than even Yen Sid on how the world works. 5. Maleficent, knowing digital worlds can hold power thanks to her traveling to the past, attempts to hack and take control over Jimmy's journal. This fails. (This is directly after 2) 6. Thinking about what the primordial darkness told her, and knowing it will reveal itself soon, Maleficent tells Pete to look for the Master of Master's box which may contain the Book of Prophecies in KH3, a book she believes holds a digital world that can lead her to great power. However unknown to her and the primordial darkness that told her of the book, the book of prophecies is a trap that guides everyone to follow it, so that the Master of Masters can defeat these primordial darknesses and holds no real power of its own. Whats inside the box however.... No one knows yet, but its theorized to probably be something related to the master of masters and/or a gateway for others to reach the World of Unmaking or whatever it'll be called where the MoM resides or a way for the MoM to return to the normal world.
Something tells me Maleficent is a really cool villainess. She's always portrayed as having deep and thorough knowledge of human nature. Her wisdom and ability to adopt typical human qualities is remarkable! She's able to switch between her own and usual self as well as era to the modern ones. She just blends right in - into any situation: be it the most sophisticatedly evil of situations to the basic-most etiquette of parties! It's really cool how She portrays the style and badass of evil like no other one (even Hades pales in comparison. He's still elderly in his remarks - limited to the era of his comments)! She's really the best representation of evil - and the coolest one, too 😎😉!!
I'm honestly glad this was made. But, at the same time, I weirdly appreciate the Goons more than I do Maleficent. Then again, it's due to their nature as the regular hoods. The type that inspired characters like The Garthim in The Dark Crystal. I think it's why they're one of the two late stage Disney characters that appeared in Roger Rabbit, with them being partially obscured when Eddie Valiant is walking through Maroon Cartoons.
This was a pretty interesting video to watch. I didn’t realize this character was in so much. I was originally looking for the original 59 movie because Lego is apparently making a set of the scene where Prince Phillip fighting her dragon form. So, I wanted to at least see a recap of that film & I must say this video definitely satisfied that. It’s pretty well scripted & there’s a lot more appearances here than I expected. I will say though I still like the original 59 movie the best after all this time.
I'd give it a solid 9/10 for your untangling of the complex web that is Kingdom Hearts and its plot. A lot of people regard Maleficent as past-her-prime in those games, having been eclipsed by the original villains, but we'll see what is to come. You might have to update this video in a few years.
I'm going to admit that Maleficent is my favorite of the villans. That's probably why Malleus is my faovite in Twisted Wonderland. Which I recomend looking into. It's wild.
Maleficent was my favorite boss battle in KH1. She's a commanding presence in every scene she's in, and this manages to make her probably the most intimidating boss, especially when she's literally throwing meteors at Sora and gang Thanos style. "METEORS OF HEAVEN, UNLEASH THY FURY!!!" And then the boss fight against her dragon form is just... ridiculously hard, especially on higher difficulties.
If you're intrigued by Malfeasant's flings with Hades, I'd suggest looking into the Aladdin/Hercules tv crossover. Hades and Jafar team up to take down their respective heroes and it gets surprisingly fruity. I'd check it out if you're curious, it made me smile
5:37 that's not technically true, Maleficent's curse specifically said "*before* the sun sets on her 16th birthday" the curse could've happened at any point before that fateful sunset (which is why King Stefan ordered the destruction of all the kingdom's spinning wheels) The reason it happens on her birthday is because Maleficent's goons failed to find Aurora during those 16 years since the fairies hid her so well (until they started using their magic again)
Even if the king had invited Maleficent, she would still curse Aurora. I don't think she cared at all for the party, wanting only to spread chaos. Aurora became her target because she saw the kingdom's party as the equivalent of they ignoring the evil she represents, and so, like a lion, she came to the party to remind the king and the people to never turn their back on her.
I wish they'd represented her like this in the Maleficent movies. She is such an epitome of evil such a good villain. I know Disney needs to make everything nice at the end for kids, but as adults this is why we love Maleficent because she represents evil and she turns into the most wicked dragon ever!
Every HM ride actually has a different story and villain, to reflect the rides placement in the different theme parks; the Disneyland, CA ride takes place in New Orleans, and used to belong to a boat monger, whereas the Paris park's manor takes place in the western frontier, and belonged to the head of the Thunder Mountain Mine Co.
Here it is, the big one, one of the greatest villains every to have been created by Disney, Maleficent! While it can be argued that Chernabog might potentially be more powerful or more evil since he's supposed to be the Devil himself, Maleficent still trumps him in terms of her presence and actions in this movie. Like, there's just so much to say when it comes to Maleficent, she's basically the full package when it comes to the best qualities of a Disney villain. She's got that Faux Affably Evil personality, where here refined and dignified personality only enhances her evil and often sadistic actions, she's INCREDIBLY powerful, easily the most powerful among Disney Villains (again, with the possible exception of Chernabog), she's got a awesome design and is wonderfully animated, oddly beautiful and graceful for being essentially an "evil fairy" (basically the exact opposite of how she looked in the original Sleeping Beauty fairy tale), she's incredibly competent, with only her idiotic minions outside of Diablo holding her back, her performance in the original movie is basically perfect, Eleanor Audley was basically born for this role (I even kind of feel bad for her successors, having big shoes to fill and all), and lastly... that dragon form of hers is flipping awesome. I LOVE dragons... like, a lot. It's no wonder Disney kept using her in so many other productions, and is one of the main antagonists in the Kingdom Hearts series as well. The only negative thing I can think to say about her is that her main motivation in the movie is relatively minor and petty, though I suppose when your the mistress of evil, any slight against you must be taken as a serious offense... even if it's not being invited to a birthday party (though I suppose when basically everyone else was invited except for you, you WOULD feel a bit miffed about it as well). Another negative thing isn't so much about Maleficent herself but rather the plot surrounding her. She's just so powerful and competent that her lose comes off as basically a deus ex machina, with the good fairies basically making Prince Phillip's sword an instant-kill when he uses it on Maleficent. Heck, the good fairies do most of the heavy lifting against Maleficent, even though Phillip is supposed to be the hero. The villain and sidekicks really were way more interesting than the hero and actual "sleeping beauty" in this movie, which is rather unfortunate... I suppose I might as well weigh in on the live-action Maleficent movie, though maybe I shouldn't since I never saw it. I do know what happens in it, though, and while I don't think anyone was really asking for a more sympathetic portrayal of Maleficent, I think it was a rather bold move at the time of it's release, and before Disney went crazy with the live-action remakes no less. The Cruella movie definitely comes off as less interesting (and more ridiculous, given that the movie apparently gives an explanation for why Cruella hates Dalmatians specifically) for basically doing the whole "sympathetic reinterpretation of a classic Disney villain" thing Maleficent already did. I've heard mixed things about Maleficent in general, some saying it's actually good, some saying it's bad, some saying it's a mess but they still liked it if only because of certain plotpoints in the movie and Angelina Jolie being the only one to realize what kind of movie she was in and acting accordingly. Still, I wouldn't know for sure since I haven't seen the full thing, maybe I will one of these days, but I'll try to keep an open mind for when that happens.
No wonder Maleficent was so polite in House of Mouse - she is rarely invited to anything...
Just like Ursula caring for her "babies" 11:43

Man I can’t wait for him to be covered.
@@brandonlyon730 i was thinking more Carmilla from the Castlevania animated series that came out a few years ago
@@soulslvr9562Also good choice.
**Minecraft munching noise**
The whole not being invited thing is a part of hospitality customs in the Middle Ages. There was a big difference between not being overtly invited and your presence not being wanted. To not be wanted somewhere was considered extremely rude.
Doubly so as the christening was a royal event and Maleficent was basically neighboring royalty with the whole castle and goblin servants bit.
Even amongst enemies
This is why Maleficent is the Disney leader of the villains in Kingdom Hearts. She's the smartest and most level headed as well as the most powerful.
*Cinderella 3 flashbacks*
Surprised that she lasted until i was born c.1991 at the age of 86
Lady T remain was a piker
I mean, having tuberculosis would be a good reason to not want to have voice acting roles.
@@mikhailabunidal9146 I’m also a 1991 baby, and that is neat that she had a long life.
I like to think Maleficent would've given Aurora a proper gift, just one that no one else would have appreciated. Like the ability to talk to dragons, or make thorny plants grow
or an AXE! TO murder her family with! : D
They may not appreciate them but those sound like pretty kickass gifts to me.
this IS actually what would ahve happened, according to what we know about local fairy lore of the region. She would have bestowed upon the princess a gift from her particular court, and while the gift may not have been deemed completely useful by human standards, it would have elevated her power and status in the fairy world
And while growing up, the only thing Aurora can think is "nice".
Couldn’t agree more.
Grey antagonists and antiheroes are overrated and overused
well said!!!!
And therein lies the reason why to me... the live action Maleficent movies shall always be steaming piles of noncanon crap in my eyes. They managed to neuter perhaps THE most iconic and vile Disney VILLAIN.
@@Kamina.D.Fierce the original Queen of Pettiness
Maleficent has always been, and will always be, my favourite Disney villain - her design is elegant yet terrifying and Eleanor Audley was the perfect voice cast.
the animated Disney movie of Malificent is the only version I choose to accept. she is just pure evil and intimidating
I’ve heard that theory, and that Cinderella is a descendant of Aurora and Philip.
@@erinbrown3744 That could be possible.

Nevermore.
Meanwhile Jafar got Iago, which is perfect. Smart bird with a very sarcastic attitude that played well off of Jafar himself

Wasn’t the movie suppose to take place in the late 40s?
I love how she just shows up whenever she’s not invited to something even if it’d make no sense for her to be there. The Disney princesses could spend the night watching Princess Bride and drinking milkshakes and she’d be like “wHAt ABoUt mE???”
I’ve always loved the eerie creepiness and looming dread that Maleficent’s theme evoked.
Such a throwaway moment but the line "frollo has,,, a laundry list of issues" took me out
Oh boy that means his Frollo video will be long and detaild one and along with him his 2 guards one of which as Patrick's voice and the villain in Hunchback 2
Maleficent might be Nintendo's inspiration for Ganondorf
I think the 1959 Disney film hints at the people’s knowledge when King Stefan knew to address Maleficent as “your excellency”.
)Edited for typo(
Fae are often described as mischievous and even dangerous in folklore. They could cause accidents, illnesses, destroy crops, kill livestock, and even cause natural disasters, if humans pissed them off. It was a way to teach children to respect nature, before environmental awareness became a thing.
They didn’t invite her because she was the self proclaimed mistress of all evil.
No need to go beyond what Marc Davis had in mind when creating her.

Interesting that Hades and Maleficent have been paired up by Disney during crossovers. I always thought that was just a fan ship.
So do I. Villains have the best songs, are more bombastic, and more fun overall.
Ya know, as a kid I never considered that Maleficent was a fairy. I started playing Twisted Wonderland a week or two ago, and they mention Malleus (a male character heavily based on her) as being a fairy. And I was somehow surprised by that. Lol

Dodie Smith was inspired to write 101 Dalmatians when a friend joked”Dalmatian spots would make good coats”
I thought I was the only one who considered the trio of fairies the true main characters.

One of my favorite villains when I was but a small tot sitting hypnotized by our collection of VHS'
Also, thank you for confirming my worries about the live action movies and that deciding not to watch them was a good idea.
If there's one thing I learned from reading "Dresden Files," it's that the fae do not need any reason to torment humanity.
Well, they do have similar minions. Although I can't picture Maleficent dancing any kind of magic dance.

As someone who has also played every Kingdom Hearts game (except the mobile, but I followed the story as best I could), this was a very adequate explanation for Maleficent's role. Especially given that Colin's only played KH2.

This was great. I love Maleficent and think she is a great villain, and possibly my favourite villain of all time.
11:50 seeing her covering her mouth in that manner is a dead ringer for grief in my opinion,to that she sees their enemies running away,it seem it can be seen.

it makes sense Diablo was made more competent and serious.
34:00 - 34:06 I like your adorable sound of disgust when you see the Prince Phill's antropomorphical horse.
YOU FINALLY MENTIONED KILALA PRINCESS!!! :D. I was so mad when it wasn’t mentioned in Queen Grimhilde and the Tremaines’ videos.
Always a pleasure to watch them 💖
Thought I was the only one disappointed by the terrible live-action version
It's suddenly canon in my head that the poor guards ordered to keep the cold iron far away out of respect for the already-invited Seelie vistors.
Maleficent is my #1 favorite "Disney" Villain of All!

So Hades clapped both the evil queen and Maleficient. Damn bro, that body count could end there and still be absolutely golden.
But can we talk about the scene where she says "And now you must deal with me O prince and all the powers of hell!" That's one badass line, I couldn't believe they put that in a kids movie
Maleficent’s theme song scarred me as a child and I loved it. I love the score to Sleeping Beauty.

you´re missing the very latest game (and soon also anime) version of Maleficent but as a late-teen senior high-school dark fairy boy called Malleus Draconius, who pretty much is a younger and more positive version of herself as a male, at the Japanese version of Disney Villains franchise Twisted Wonderland.
This fails. (This is directly after 2)
Maleficent is freakin awesome! so glad this video happened! 💜👍
A. Maleficent is the best villain
B. I would love to see one on Hades next
Thank you! My 10yo son and I love to watch your villain videos together!
34:33 " Im going to defeat you with the power of friendship and this RPG-7 I found"
It's nice when I see smaller channels get sponsors. You put so much work in these videos you definitely deserve it.
I love maleficent in the original sleeping beauty. She truly was the Mistress of all evil and I love it 🖤
I'm honestly glad this was made.
"Frollo has...a laundry list of issues"
Oh boy, that episode is gonna be both incredibly entertaining and depressing
This was a pretty interesting video to watch. I didn’t realize this character was in so much. I was originally looking for the original 59 movie because Lego is apparently making a set of the scene where Prince Phillip fighting her dragon form. So, I wanted to at least see a recap of that film & I must say this video definitely satisfied that. It’s pretty well scripted & there’s a lot more appearances here than I expected. I will say though I still like the original 59 movie the best after all this time.
Finally, at long last! (a brand new Disney Villains Retrospective video)
yay one of my top three fav disney villains can't wait to see the other two of my top three being ursula and jafar!!!!
I'd give it a solid 9/10 for your untangling of the complex web that is Kingdom Hearts and its plot. A lot of people regard Maleficent as past-her-prime in those games, having been eclipsed by the original villains, but we'll see what is to come. You might have to update this video in a few years.
This video is a masterpiece I really love sleeping beauty movie and maleficent she is my favorite Disney villain keep it up :)
I'm going to admit that Maleficent is my favorite of the villans. That's probably why Malleus is my faovite in Twisted Wonderland. Which I recomend looking into. It's wild.
Your videos have been so consistently high effort and in depth, I’ve never understood how you don’t have more subscribers.
Ok that transition into the ad was creative as hell. Well done😉
Maleficent is just so iconic
Maleficent was my favorite boss battle in KH1. She's a commanding presence in every scene she's in, and this manages to make her probably the most intimidating boss, especially when she's literally throwing meteors at Sora and gang Thanos style.
"METEORS OF HEAVEN, UNLEASH THY FURY!!!"
And then the boss fight against her dragon form is just... ridiculously hard, especially on higher difficulties.
9:07 Shere Khan was blinded by prejudice, the list does indeed go on.
17:23 The novelization of the movie had that happen.
44:53 Welp, apparently Fantasmic has that same issue now...
Happy Anniversary, Sleeping Beauty.👸😴💒🧚
That end gets me every time 💀
Great video. Diablo is adorable.
Can’t wait to see you do Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion!
Every HM ride actually has a different story and villain, to reflect the rides placement in the different theme parks;
the Disneyland, CA ride takes place in New Orleans, and used to belong to a boat monger, whereas the Paris park's manor takes place in the western frontier, and belonged to the head of the Thunder Mountain Mine Co.
