Why Pepsi Had its Own Military | Tales From the Bottle

- An often requested topic, today we look into the timeline of Pepsi's (yes, the cola company) naval fleet during the Cold War, which is popularly cited as having been the 6th largest military force in the world.
"In 1959, the USSR held an exhibition of Soviet technology and culture in New York. The United States reciprocated with an exhibition in Sokolniki Park, Moscow, which led to the famous kitchen debate. One of the American products exhibited was Pepsi Cola. After obtaining a photo of U.S. President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev sipping Pepsi, Pepsico executive Donald Kendall was able to capture the attention of the Soviet people and, in 1972, negotiate a cola monopoly in the USSR. Due to Soviet restrictions on transporting rubles abroad, PepsiCo struck a barter deal whereby Stolichnaya vodka would be exchanged for Pepsi syrup. This deal lasted until 1990, when the USSR and PepsiCo re-negotiated a $3 billion deal to exchange syrup for vodka and a small fleet of Soviet warships including 17 submarines, a frigate, a cruiser and a destroyer"

@Qxir shouldn't the "Pepsi fleet" be referred to as the 6th largest Navy in the world at the time? I mean with no soldiers, artillery, land vehicles, nukes, or air assets, it is hard to believe Pepsi was the 6th largest military at any point in history.

Would you happen to know where the shirts are manufactured?
This vid is more pol than pol is
This really is a tale from the bottle
Most likely a plastic one.
Damn bro I never thought about it like that
More like a tale of the bottles.
mrscorpion1829 I agree Saitama
Oh fuck off XDDDDD
Actually, that the cruiser, was technically a assault carrier instead of a normal cruiser. It could launch LCAC and helicopter form the helipad. If Pepsi did want to, they could really able to use it as a mobile base to attack coca cola.
Yeah, they could totally blow up Coca Cola's HQ in Atlanta if they dropped anchor in Panama city and deploy a Hind-d from it,although it would be a one way trip.
@Idontknowmynamelol 17 Nah Just use That Harrier The Got to the commercial
Ah, yes.
Fucking civil war.
Technically the transaction never actually occurred and the soviets actually made them cargo ships for Pepsi to use or lease out
Finally, a political movement that fits perfectly with my ideals

What about that Canada vs Denmark “war” over Hans island where they removed each other’s flag and left some whiskey behind. it’s a pretty small topic but it would be good for a quick/compilation video
well it's over now, negotiations split the island 60/40 down the middle
This is almost as entertaining as the Ohio Michigan conflict over a 1 mile strip of land. And of course, like that conflict as well, it was very small scale, and led absolutely nowhere
Pffff amateurs. In Brazil we had *ACTUAL* wars fought between states, without any federal intervention in the early republic. Real federalism hours, breeding only the strongest.
@Brandon VerBurg but that's different, your civil war was between the union and a confederation of separatist states. We had a whole fuckin lot of these too but i'm talkin about total war between states, with war crimes and shit, and federal neutrality. It was as close as it gets to the Thunderdome

And Michigan just HAD to take that peninsula from Wyoming. Yet another reason that Michiganders suck.
@@EleetCanoe OI ! Watch your mouth ! I live in Michigan
I remember watching someone else's video about this, and the most-even more disappointing thing about this is, iiirc, that after negotiating this deal, Pepsi didn't ever actually GET the ships to scrap. The Soviet Union collapsed and they had to start negotiations all over again with the new Russian Federation.
I was wondering if someone was gonna mention that
To summarize:
Soviets wanted Pepsi bad
Soviet money =crap
Soviet trade military for Pepsi
Pepsi takes ships
Pepsi sends Pepsi
Pepsi later scraps ships
Boat sides WIN ! !
Stonks, as the consumers are likely to dribk pepsi in cans out of cruiser scrap

Lord of the Ring? I thought it was Star Wars vs Star Trek?
Star what?
Not to mention Star Wars is overvalued garbage
@stockart whiteman never thought about it like that but I still think in Pop-culture Star Wars vs Star Trek is more popular and that because they are the most popular Sci-Fi franchises while LOTR is fantasy
Sci-fi fans verses oldworld ancient stuff and witchcraft fans. Geeks vs Nerds a timeless struggle.
I would argue that the fact that both SW and LOTR competed each other in fandom and box office revenue make a more suitable comparison that star trek
I love how none of this wouldn’t have started without a Russian political officer being offered a Pepsi during the Cold War at the right time
I don't not love double negatives :D
ah yes the butterfly effect strikes again.

how to settle the cola wars:
pepsi is better when its cold
coke is better when its not cold
I love this comment
I love this name
Why you would drink a room temperature cola drink? Of course there is a component of addiction to caffeinated drinks but still, if you are that addicted you should have your stash
Pepsi is sweeter
So has everyone forgotten about the absolutely massive “drink coke ice cold” marketing campaign that they did?
That footage at the end is actually a great piece of work!
Before then, no one had taken the time to interview senior citizens...much less a bus worth...HaHa
Naw but seriously, I was by no means expecting to relate with such personalities plucked from time...but I was comfortably humbled...
Could've been cool if the USA then gave Coke some tanks in retaliation.
I love how you go from coca cola and pepsi rivalry, who are probably only “rivals” as some form of advertisement, to the USA and USSR whom were not at war with each other cause it could literally end the world.
I’ll join this qxir society.

The trouble is that it didn't sell in Russia. Vodka was cheaper than water, and cola was more expensive than water. No contest, really.
This situation caused a lot of trouble for my uncle, who was involved in setting up manufacturing plants in Russia at some point.

From my understanding, Coke Cola & Pepsi came to South Africa but when we went into the Apartheid era, Pepsi was like "hell no" and pulled out of SA. Apparently Coke stayed... and that's the reason why Coke is such a big brand in SA.
Qxir! Just wanna say thanks for giving me distraction whenever i need it! Cheers
Coke on a summer day. Pepsi for party's.

"You best start believing in Cyberpunk Dystopias. You're in one."
@0:56-1:02 I can relate to that deeply
There’s mistakes. 1st one Pepsi saw the Soviet dictator drink Pepsi in the kitchen debate which made them interested to make a deal
2 they were not the 6th biggest military many theorize that the ships were not armed and Pepsi also sold the ships for scrap no point in selling them weapons with it.
So as new subscriber of this glorious Qxirism path all I have to ask is...When do we start the purification of the impure?
It's all fun and games until a soda fires a ballistic missile to your strategic military bases
The many different translations of qxirism in the subtitles is amusing!
