I fly high school stadiums where I come across birds about 80 percent of the time. I found a few tips that work all the time. 1. Keep VLOS, 2. Fly straight up, 3. Sport mode, 4. Wear them out, their curiousity only lasts about 5 minutes - plan for it, 5. Always plan for a secondary landing spot, especially by the beach where you standing around is a trigger for food, lastly - see number 1, if your head is down looking at the screen, you wont have time to react. - some of the other stuff (stickers, lights, propellers, skins) seem gimicky. Always build into your preflight scouting the area for wildlife.

Thanks for sharing this advice. For a long time I've stuck highly reflective tape on my drones, red on port side and green on starboard side, this also helps me know the drone's orientation as well as keeping off the birds.
I had taken a video about two weeks ago actually of a "osprey" hawk behind my home in Florida (where live on a lakeside) of the hawk trying to attack my drone I utilized for training prior to buying my second commercial drone as my first commercial drone was unfortunately stolen. I appreciate you bringing up the reflective tape! I am a recent 107 commercial drone pilot as well by the FAA so i will be flying a lot more often.

Great advice and tips, where I live where we have many Herring gulls (Rat on wings) and are very agressive I generally fly straight up they tend to circle below when I go high (100-120M), I do have red reflective tape on my drone and that spooks them and they keep away, have ordered those propellers (2 packs for spares) thank you for this video. @reviewprodigy I lost 2 drones last year through my newbie lack of knowledge. I'm heading to Vietnam and Thailand soon and the last thing I need is to lose my new Air 3 and SD card and expensive battery to a seagull strike. In some ways, the data is more important than the drone because of all the travel costs getting there.
My experience. Which is based on a lot of flying in the US south-west. I have several drones that I've flown over the last 5+ years. I've had a few times where birds have flown close to a drone, as if they were curious. It made me nervous but never had actual contact. Plus many flights where no birds even came near the drone. A little over a year ago was the only exception. All of my drones are, let's say, DJI grey except one. This drone is bright orange. While flying this one over a canyon, up towards the base of the mountains, it was attacked / struck by what had to be a bird. I can't think of anything else that would be up in the sky, where the drone was. I never saw any birds flying by in the video feed. Because of my position and a couple of large trees, I couldn't see the drone for maybe a minute, no more, which is when something happened. In the video feed I saw the drone make an unusual motion but it was over in a second or so and I figured it was just some glitch that the drone experienced. After landing, while putting the drone away, I could see that it had been struck on the top side. After I got back home I inspected the drone closer and ended up super gluing a one inch crack in the plastic body, right on top. This is the only drone that I've ever had that was struck by a bird and it's the only bright orange colored one. I don't know if there's any connection, or not. This one is a small, sub 250g drone and I've flown it many times since that day. Except for the crack, it doesn't appear to have suffered any other damage and still flies like when it was new.
Thanks for these ideas. i live in an area where plovers are numerous, and it is not uncommon for the drone to be mobbed by them. I was about to ask you if you’ve tried alternative sounds. I know I own a company & we’ve built landfills all over the US & seagulls are obviously a huge issue-NOTE: we built one in Oklahoma in ‘95 & I found (2) AMAZING things there, near Tulsa (Muskogee): 1. Seagulls (not many, but they were there - sort of like Kramer swimming in the East River on Seinfeld!) & 2. Seashell traces deep inside the clay we dug up for use as cover for the “liner” to place on top of the existing landfill we were closing (as we dug out the pit for the new, Subtitle D** landfill (meaning it had a synthetic, HDPE liner on top of 24” of highly compacted clay, not simply a clay liner) adjacent. Just thought I would share that. It seems like seagulls have a thing for specific colors! Maybe I should paint my drone Carolina blue to keep them away. I might investigate different sounds also.:)
The Anti Collision lights also help with Helicopters so they can see you. Here in orlando Florida, Helicopters tend to fly below 400 feet because people are taking pictures and videos of the theme parks so I always have mine on just in case 👍🏽
I went to the old forestry academy off highway 50 many years ago outside Orlando and attended Valencia community college in Orlando at the same time part time at night. Later I held a position driving from st. Petersburg Florida to Orlando and back every night for work delivering products to a warehouse by universal studios and seen the helicopters you are referring to and yes they fly under 400 feet a lot. The strobe lights would obviously need to be utilized in the general area for sure.
@@RickyL305 you’ll a lot of helicopters by Seaworld however Universal is building their new theme park by sand lake so once it’s open you’ll see them flying over there as well
@@peacefulthrillseeker I fully agree with you. It has been awhile since I have been in the area however I do plan on touring in my RV around the state as soon as possible. Unfortunately with staying in state parks it's illegal to fly over government controlled lands such as the state parks therefore I will need to find locations to fly in a couple months. Sand lake is nice however I think it's illegal according to Orlando city ordinance to actually fly there. So many restrictions based on where a person is nowadays and county ordinances vary from county and city.
Great advice. Here in the UK, I've had occasional problems with birds when flying my DJI Mini 2 and I recently added some of the red reflective tape and so far it's been very effective.
I am.also in Florida within the Tampa Bay area and a 107 license holder. What part of the state are you in? I to want to use the tape as a couple weeks ago, I had three different hawks try attacking my drone, one specifically kept on returning. I live on a lakeside area as my backyard is a lake so there are a number of different species around here such as hawks, river otters, there is a 6 to 8 foot alligator in the lake, possums, racoons and coyotes all in the general area. I need to be careful with our puppies and cat being outside with all these wild native animals in the general area and want to protect my DJI drone as well from the hawks. Someone local even took a photo of a bald eagle in the area this week even which is not common at all here.
@@RickyL305 I live in NE Florida but produce Boating Safety Videos. I've been all around Florida's coast and inlets around the continental USA. The tape works very well with gulls. Crows have shown interest but no attacks. Ospreys are the only ones that truly preoccupy me. I think some common sense and getting to know and identify nesting areas is probably just as important as deterrent measures like the tape. I always stay clear of nesting wildlife, especially birds of prey.
@@troletti I will subscribe to your channel, thank you for bringing it up. I have a boat yet I need to get the water pump changed out and new batteries . I have not been out on the water for some time now. But that will be changing plus I plan on using my RV as well. There is just so much to do is all while getting the drone business going. I am blessed that my family's last name is a household name thanks to the five star steak and seafood chain of restaurants (18 in total throughout a lot of Florida cities, Georgia and north Carolina had some over the past 74 years since 1948 and still going in Pinellas county where I reside today) that since had been franchised out, the local major mechanic shop with my cousin who is a professional local car racer and realtors in the family as well . Therefore as mentioned, my family's last name alone will give me a bit of a marketing edge. I have posted two 30 and 45 second advertisement videos on my channel for drone services and starting in about a week, I will have a basic website as well to start off with. I just do not want to become overwhelmed with work until I get more familiar with my commercial drone and get the required remote i.d. as well. I am subscribing to your channel now and will of course check it out being that we have the same interest.
Hi Brett. I notice that you had the reflective tape on a M2P drone. Do you use that drone for work purposes ? There are a few new Mavic 3 drones out there that are "supposed" to be better than the M2P. Does the older drone work well for you?
It works great but Im just waiting for the air3S to be released and then Ill be upgrading. It is my work drone. You dont always have to have the latest drone if an older drone does everything you need:)
I have used the silver version of this red tape, so far seems to keep pesky seagulls away from my drone, the will now circle at a distance, whereas before they would divebomb my drone, but it could be the time of year so it will be interesting to watch their behaviour around nesting season.
Great video! Very informative and well presented. I am a new drone pilot and i started flying in winter in Canada where there were less birds because of the cold temperatures but now, birds are back and I am afraid of birds taking down my drone… lots of seagulls and grackles and red wing black birds, etc. I fly a dji mini 4 pro and don’t want to go above 250 g so I don’t know if i can use the tape or light solution.
I own a mini 2 se and it has that light in the back side of the drone that flashes green. I don't know why, but that seems to keep birds away from my drone, I saw some circling around, then just left it alone. It kinda works like the strobe.
Great tips, I’ve also found you can draw the chasing bird in one direction(downwind if possible), flip sports mode and fly back before they realize what’s going on.
I put red reflection tape all over my air 3 and even a strobe light did nothing too stop the crow's on the Mornington peninsula now in breading season I fly out over the beach as they don't like going too far out over the water just have too put up with them when I come back too land
I have tanenrite and what i do is before i take off i shot about 3 pounds of it and it clears out all wild life for about 4 miles. If i see another bird i do it again. But i live in america and in the country not the city so im legally allowed to do it. I fly far minimum of usually 3 miles most of about 7 when i leave the house. If uve never heard and felt tannerite in person u wont understood its more shaking then a earthquake and louder then tnt.
Nothing like blowing up everyone else's day for your own convenience..... Do you also use your leaf blower at 4 in the morning, or fish with dynamite in the lake?
Hello and thanks for this useful video! I have got a mini4 pro and my concern is that such a lightweight drone will lose balance using reflective tapes; plus if I'll put it almost everywhere but not below (where birds won't attack), probably the weight won't be equally distributed. What do you think? Thanks!
The tape weighs almost nothing but on a smaller drone you wont put as much on. It wont unbalance your drone at all. Just make sure you dont cover any sensors and you should be fine
I had a problem when some birds decided to circle my drone while I was trying to land after low battery RTH, there was also a dog jumping up, and I could not cancel RTH in time, so I managed to catch the drone.
Dude you gave me an excellent idea with that tape I have the Bwine F7 drone I love it I'm gonna put the white tape in the front and red in the back but not go over board
do u think i should use a propeller guard or fly without one ? to protect my drone from birds of course, also what if i use the normal propellers jsut paint them in red ? thanks for touching this subject,
You can fly with a propeller guard if you want. Its really up to you on that one. I wouldnt paint your propellers as it may effect the balance of the props and cause you to have unstable flying.
Its just the strobe I use. Lumecube create good products and if you are in the US they are FAA approved. Really though, buy one that fits your budget. Any strobe is better than none:)
At the place I live there are a lot of seagulls and I usually go the method of going up then trying to get away. I'll usually do some sport flying around as if I'm flying a 6 axis los quad and do sharp banked turns. Than if the bird doesn't go away I actually start flying towards the bird and chasing it. They actually seem to get scared when I chase them and slightly make them feel that I can catch up to them if I want to. I ofc keep my distance tho
When it’s magpie season I keep away from them they have attacked my drone and me at the same time they always do it when you get the best shot that you want I use a Mavic 3
The ONE bird that took out my Mavic 3 Cine and the first 3 tips were completely useless, was a Peregrine Falcon. There was no flying above it, there was no getting my shot. Even in sport mode I could not get back to home fast enough. By the time I got to the home point the drone was overheating and landing on it's own. Can't believe it was able to make it back, but once it landed, it never took off again. The reason I know it was a Falcon was because it was still pursuing the drone even after landing.
@@reviewprodigy Thanks for the tape tip! I have my replacement covered in it and the same anti collision light. I fly with the largest human operated drone fleet in the world and your tips are spot on with our company guidelines on what to do with birds. I sent your video to them to see if they are interested in the tape idea. Great tips!
Interesting thing about the propellers sound. Stock propellers sounds much like a bee swarm. Perhaps birds are just hearing something they think can be eaten.
I recently had a turkey buzzard take my drone straight to the ground, I almost lost it, but I fly 5 inch and 7 inch custom built FPV drones do you have any advice for me? I live in West Virginia USA
I thought about the tape but the way it's built it's going to be tricky but thanks I will get some red props and try n figure out how to put tape on it. Thanks again
When there are birds nesting or whatever, i just move away from the area. Most birds can fly way faster than a drone. Especially birds of prey and when they swoop or dive, they can reach spectacular speeds. However some good advise, thank you.
It depends on what mode you're flying in. I set my flight mode to cinematic, and when in cinematic mode, your evasive speed is drastically reduced. Secondly, you went up there to work, and not just to race birds, and you've got just about 20 to 30 minutes to do some work before your battery runs out. So, racing birds instead of doing the work that got you up there in the first place may not be advantageous to you. The less bird attention you have, the better for you.
If you believe that hundreds millions years of evolution of feathered predators are inferior to a little drone ,,, Well the video does explain in what situation UAV can have an edge
Hmmmm... You made this same video 3 or 4 months ago. You never mentioned the strobe until I post it. I see that post in that video has been removed. You are one strange dude. PS: Using those red props is not a good idea. Those can SNAP by simply hitting a bee, twig, or anything at all. They are complete junk. I await your next video "These Red Props cost me my drone". ;)
I made a similar video a few months ago and I think it was your comment(and a few others) on the strobe that made me investigate it further. Thats why I have done this video, it is part of a series I'm doing to help people with bird problems for their drone.. Also, I havent removed any comments, I never do. I just checked that video and your comment is still there. This was your comment " @WOTHFPV 5 months ago 9 years as a pro pilot in Colorado, I've had dozens of red tail hawk and eagle encounters. But the only emergency situation I've had was caused by a magpie. It cost him his life, and it cost me a Zenmuse X5. I tried the orange reflector tape years ago, it had zero effect in my experience. What I found works the best is a red strobe on the drone. Not one issue in the past 6 years. They don't even bother my Inspire 2. I just got the M350T, first thing I did was stick two red strobes on the top." I'm not a strange dude, I havent done anything wrong to you at all but for some reason you feel feel the need to be negative. Good luck to you.
Why are you being so rude, many of us feel he is giving very good educational tips. By the way, I do like the red and blue props myself and appreciate being able to see the drone easier anyways I can with use of the red or blue prop guards as well.
Note to self : Dont Fly Dji drone w/ Mounted machine guns near or around hawks or eagles nest . Thank you ! Now alittle bit of the red reflective tape do they have other colors to match my blades 😎
Your problems with birds are self-inflicted. Who in their right mind flies near flocks of birds? 🤪 Also, flying near nesting areas is prohibited here in the U.S.
I dont choose to fly near nesting birds. I am a real estate photographer and quite often land or houses come up for sale near nesting birds. Agents or house owners wont wait for months for photos. They barely wait days. I cant just come back in a few months and photograph the land.
magpies are cool... leave them alone. I've had a Phantom 3 put down by magpies but they have every right to protect their airspace. Seagulls are way worse.
YOU can't avoid nesting areas in their mating season? I avoid them all the time, and make good money. Because of your work. Well that makes you the Greedy one.

Interesting!, Great idea having it on just in case
@@reviewprodigy it only helps especially with helicopters 🚁 birds 🦅 hate the Arc V it really annoys them especially larger birds
Fantastic, That is what I love to hear:)
Nope I live on the North East England coast the tape does not work.
@@Hawks922 That's good know. Do you remember which type of birds it didnt work on so we're mindful of them when fly around the coast?
I use the same red tape…it’s pretty effective in Florida…however I had to properly prepare the surface for the tape to adhere well.
@@troletti I subbed to your channel and left a comment with having the same exact interest in boating and drones .
Great tips
Can you get that tape in sheet form? It would be cool to cut a stencil out.
Not sure but it does comes in various widths which may help:)
Really good vid👍 new subscriber here🙂
Thanks for subscribing and your comment:)
Thank you very insightful, learned a lot!
Thankyou
Thanks for the tips, I'll try it 😊
Thanks for your comment:)
I have used the silver version of this red tape, so far seems to keep pesky seagulls away from my drone, the will now circle at a distance, whereas before they would divebomb my drone, but it could be the time of year so it will be interesting to watch their behaviour around nesting season.
I've used these methods through nesting season and ithey work great

Great video! Very informative and well presented. I am a new drone pilot and i started flying in winter in Canada where there were less birds because of the cold temperatures but now, birds are back and I am afraid of birds taking down my drone… lots of seagulls and grackles and red wing black birds, etc. I fly a dji mini 4 pro and don’t want to go above 250 g so I don’t know if i can use the tape or light solution.
You could try the propellers though, That may help your situation
I own a mini 2 se and it has that light in the back side of the drone that flashes green. I don't know why, but that seems to keep birds away from my drone, I saw some circling around, then just left it alone. It kinda works like the strobe.
nice one
Great tips, I’ve also found you can draw the chasing bird in one direction(downwind if possible), flip sports mode and fly back before they realize what’s going on.
That works great if its one bird, but a good tip for sure:)
I don't have a sports mode
I put red reflection tape all over my air 3 and even a strobe light did nothing too stop the crow's on the Mornington peninsula now in breading season I fly out over the beach as they don't like going too far out over the water just have too put up with them when I come back too land
Asesome vid ❤🎉
Thanks
I have tanenrite and what i do is before i take off i shot about 3 pounds of it and it clears out all wild life for about 4 miles. If i see another bird i do it again. But i live in america and in the country not the city so im legally allowed to do it. I fly far minimum of usually 3 miles most of about 7 when i leave the house. If uve never heard and felt tannerite in person u wont understood its more shaking then a earthquake and louder then tnt.
Wow, The things you can do in the USA :)
@@reviewprodigy thanks!
I had a problem when some birds decided to circle my drone while I was trying to land after low battery RTH, there was also a dog jumping up, and I could not cancel RTH in time, so I managed to catch the drone.
Nice one, That would have been a little stressfull:)
Dude you gave me an excellent idea with that tape I have the Bwine F7 drone I love it I'm gonna put the white tape in the front and red in the back but not go over board
do u think i should use a propeller guard or fly without one ? to protect my drone from birds of course,
also what if i use the normal propellers jsut paint them in red ?
thanks for touching this subject,
You can fly with a propeller guard if you want. Its really up to you on that one. I wouldnt paint your propellers as it may effect the balance of the props and cause you to have unstable flying.
Any reason you picked such an expensive strobe light? Over $100 for that thing? Could be worth it for the birds but I dont see the price
Its just the strobe I use. Lumecube create good products and if you are in the US they are FAA approved. Really though, buy one that fits your budget. Any strobe is better than none:)
Also, Im not sure what country you are in but its $49 US. So its an inexpensive strobe.
I really like your ideas, I’ve been flying for over 7 years, lost one drone to a goose , I’ll get that strobe
hope it all works as well for you:)
@@reviewprodigy it sounds like a sensible idea, thanks for posting
At the place I live there are a lot of seagulls and I usually go the method of going up then trying to get away. I'll usually do some sport flying around as if I'm flying a 6 axis los quad and do sharp banked turns. Than if the bird doesn't go away I actually start flying towards the bird and chasing it. They actually seem to get scared when I chase them and slightly make them feel that I can catch up to them if I want to. I ofc keep my distance tho
Nice:)
my problem is the oyster catcher - they just attack drones but I may try the strobe. thanks for the info.- fly safe
It cant hurt to give it a try:)
When it’s magpie season I keep away from them they have attacked my drone and me at the same time they always do it when you get the best shot that you want I use a Mavic 3
They certainly do. They are a pain
Tnx for the tip bro ❤❤❤
Thankyou:)
Yep, Those larger birds are the owners of the sky for sure
@@reviewprodigy Thanks for the tape tip! I have my replacement covered in it and the same anti collision light. I fly with the largest human operated drone fleet in the world and your tips are spot on with our company guidelines on what to do with birds. I sent your video to them to see if they are interested in the tape idea. Great tips!
Thanks for that, much appreciated@@JustinBradleyPhotographer
Interesting thing about the propellers sound. Stock propellers sounds much like a bee swarm. Perhaps birds are just hearing something they think can be eaten.
You may be right on that one:)

I filmed a flock of geese last month trying to get a cool shot of them flying, and they out ran my drone with no problem. And i was in sports mode.
Thats impressive, I never would have thought of geese as fast:)
thanks for the info, but i spin my phantom 3 like a top really fast and acts like a weed eater , bird come and nothing but feathers,

I recently had a turkey buzzard take my drone straight to the ground, I almost lost it, but I fly 5 inch and 7 inch custom built FPV drones do you have any advice for me? I live in West Virginia USA
What props do you use?
GemFan Hurricane
Maybe try and get them in red as well as use the reflective tape
I thought about the tape but the way it's built it's going to be tricky but thanks I will get some red props and try n figure out how to put tape on it. Thanks again
When there are birds nesting or whatever, i just move away from the area. Most birds can fly way faster than a drone. Especially birds of prey and when they swoop or dive, they can reach spectacular speeds. However some good advise, thank you.
Very true! Good Tip
woah nice!!
Thankyou:)
I tilt my drone forward to let the bird know my drone ain't gonna back down
3. Fly against the wind. 😮😮 Umm, no, doesn't work that way. At all. Think about it for a sec.
Otherwise, great video and thanks.
The birds see your drone and they think it must be bird Jesus 😂
haha
Anyone wanna make some none folding all aluminum props for mavic 3 ? Now’s your time to shine !
I haven't had this happen yet
Hopefully it doesnt happen:)
@@reviewprodigy also waiting for that perfect shot of seeing a bird. 😉
DJI should have a device or built in that pings sounds that annoys the birds😂
Im looking currently for a device that does just that. No luck as yet
FVP drone ?
Yea i go up and keep an eye on the eagle or hawk. Then if i don't watch them i hual a$$ back home then nose dive back down to me under trees
Good idea
i thought drone could fly alot faster then birds
depends on the drone and the bird. An eagle has a flight speed between 110kmh and 130kmh
The less bird attention you have, the better for you.
fair enough. i see where your going gotcha 😉
If you believe that hundreds millions years of evolution of feathered predators are inferior to a little drone ,,,
Well the video does explain in what situation UAV can have an edge
Peregrine falcon could attack with up to 200 mph..
This was your comment "
@WOTHFPV

9 years as a pro pilot in Colorado, I've had dozens of red tail hawk and eagle encounters.
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. It's nice to know that some people like what I'm trying to do here:)@@RickyL305
Note to self : Dont Fly Dji drone w/ Mounted machine guns near or around hawks or eagles nest . Thank you ! Now alittle bit of the red reflective tape do they have other colors to match my blades 😎
They do have all colors:)
Fly fpv and then outrun them.
Working on it:)
I'm pretty sure large nerds can be a bit of a problem too.
Large turds too.
They certainly could haha
Awe magpies might be 💩 but they are also majestic creatures 😊
Large raptors attacking your drone can seriously injure the bird!!
The drone has the right to Self-Defend itself if it feels its life is at risk.
It certainly can
You cannot outfly an eagle.
Yea a guy tried at 50mph but it had high ground and dived ran the drone down 😆
That's not true I out flew an eagle with my fixed Wing by doing a backflip 😊
@samholdsworth420 if u have fpv or alot of wings. My slowest 3" drone still does 75mph so if bird isn't diving we can outrun hahaha
Speak for yourself. I do it easily.
Go away:(
Is this a problem for rc planes? I’ve got a heavy ass rc plane which can go around 60 mph and has a 1.5 meter wingspan
No idea, but commercial airliners have issues with bird strikes. So it looks to be a problem no matter the size of the aircraft
Hey Brett great video thanks! Very informative. I’m a complete newbie and just bought myself a Mini 3 which is pretty small. Do You think the Lumecube light would be too big for that drone? PS
I’m in Perth so your videos are really relevant!
The lumecube light weighs almost nothing but may be a little big physically.
