Never seen this happen, have bees here, they've never come near Phantom or Hexacopter. Most likely you were hovering close enough to the hive for them to feel threatened.
The citronella is a logical idea, if someone needs to keep working in an area where bees have already attacked a drone.

Interesting with citronella. There is a liquid that I use to push bees away when pulling honey. It is called honey robber. It smells bad , imo, and you certainly do not want your drone smelling like it, but bees hate the smell. Maybe the Velcro to apply a sponge with the honey robber so you can take it off and put in a Tupperware container when not in use.

4:55 when bees are gonna bee (be) there, lol
One thing to do is never panick. Make sure to fly AWAY from you at all times until they leave the drone then come back to you.

Similar to a propeller guard, how about a mosquito mesh guard around the entire drone? The mesh size would need to be optimized for not letting bees in and allowing maximum prop downflow. I can also imagine if enough bees land on the mesh the weight and blocked airflow might crash the drone! The mesh concept would allow bee video makers to subtitle their creations with "no bees were harmed in the making of this video!"

Citronella: Would love to see that tested. I would think that the volume of air moving past the drone would effectively nullify the few drops on that pad. However, the wonderment would be if the bees were sensitive enough to smell those microns of oil.

True story, I once came across a realistic, but fabricated and bar coded anomaly in a sales bin at my local Canadian Tire store, a plasticized paper machete look wasp hive - sold as a deterrent to discourage any thoughts of creating a new habation. Fiercely competitive by default, apparently wasps will not make camp if they have to worry about defending themselves against an already established colony.
Had I read and understood the reasoning as I currently do now, see above, I would not, in a million years, had attempted to hang this up in the corner of the garage opposite the one that had recently been established.
No vibration to speak of, no change in air pressure either, just a three hundred lb man getting the hell off the step ladder fast than he went up.
    You're welcome 🙂

They seem Africanized judging by the swarm.
