Im mainly an acoustic player, play a lot of rhythm stuff in my band, and having had strats, teles, les Paul's etc. I've actually found sgs to be the most similar in feel to playing an acoustic, especially when sat down (just something I've noticed) probably with how it rests on your leg, fret sizes and where the bridge sits. In tone it's warm but can be hot when needed. Really versatile tbh. SGs are for me are the most underrated electric guitars, glad I opened my eyes to them.
The classic/vintage Gibson bridge is called an ABR and they screwed right into the body of the guitar. The Nashville bridge was an update on that. The Nashville bridge screws into metal bushings in the body and it has a thumbwheel that raises or lowers the entire bridge. The Nashville bridge is also wider than the original ABR.
@@landonbailey it is an upgrade in every way but guitarists being guitarists some people still insist the ABR is better. An equivalent fender argument is top loader vs. string through.
Hi Landon. Welcome to the SG family. I have a number of guitars of different makes and from different manufacturers, but SGs are my favorite. I currently own four Gibson SGs and those are the guitars I play the most. Some of it is that emotional connection that I have to some of my favorite bands, like you have with Badfinger and Radiohead, but I love the feel of SGs and the tonal variety (it cleans up nicely and has a great mid-range growl). Gibson, IMO, has really stepped up their game the last two years under their current leadership and I really like the direction the company is heading. Anyway, thanks for the video and hope you have many hours of enjoyment playing your new guitar.
Love my SGs. I have 2 now, a Standard and a Custom. Had more Gibsons but sold some off and hot my first Telecaster that I love as well. Still, my SGs are my absolute favorites. Congrats on your first Gibson!
The SG is the best choice by far for me. Sounds great, not exactly like a Les Paul but close enough for a guitar that's like half the weight. The necks tend to be a little wider than stratocasters but their high fret access is way better. They do have neck dive issues, but like Landon said, they're easily solved. There's a reason it's the best selling guitar Gibson makes.
Longest time nobody wanted an SG, this year they became popular again and are outrageous prices. If you want an SG wait till next year when the market is flooded.
I got my first this past year too. I saw an ugly refin'd, with pickups swapped, '74 ES-345 that just played really well. It's the only Gibson I've ever owned even after playing a bunch of SG's and Les Paul's, and I'm really happy with it. I've really been interested in the SG but I might hold off because I'm building a telecaster -I'm sure that'll catch your attention.
Wait till next year and the market will be flooded with cheap SG's. They got popular again recently and every company producing an SG style with crazy prices.
@@RobertNolan Nice, you just like the look of the sideways? I'll have to look up some playing of one. You can only do slight wobbles on those right? Could probably get some funky sounds out of 1. I like the look of both sideways and maestro, may have to go in a store and try them both. Heard they both have their ups and downs.
Awesome video, its super refreshing to get your take on other guitars. You are absolutely one of my favorite reviewers and you go over everything that someone would need to know!
@@robertpowell7319 Well, Robert, I only really know that I've gotten to the point where I have lie about my age… JUST to be Old! 😆 My son turned 30 today, and I don't think Landon is way older than that. I got My first SG Special, used… in 1964. I'd bet all my guitars that Landon is older than 58!haha 😆 I was the only up tight, anxious & nervous soul at Woodstock! I refused to chill! 😆 I'm kinda proud of that fact… the largest peer-pressure tidal wave in American music history! But, I was probably just upset that so few hippies laughed at my bad puns & jokes! What a crowd! Haha 😆 Be well, brother. Gary K
The modern has the grover tuners, the bulkier strap buttons, quick connect pcb pickups as opposed to 50s style hand wiring, and a nashville bridge. Also the 61 variant has the typically preferred Burst Bucker pickups and a hardshell case.
I imagine that everyone tries each brand/model at least once. I saw videos that list "the 5 guitars you must buy" and took it to heart. I own a couple of Fender Players, some G&Ls and Squiers. Tried Epi and liked those but now own two Gibson Tributes (2019 LP and 2021 SG) and love them. Both are flawless and I love the feel and sound, they are unique and everyone should try them. Not necessarily better than Fender or Gretsch or others but have that special Rock and R&R sound.
It was my first Gibson too, wife got it for my birthday. I was surprised to love it more than my fenders due to its feel in the hand. Still prefer a fenders sound but the form factor of the SG was made for me
i think we are in a golden age for Gibson guitars. The SG has grown on me over the years. My main complaint about les pauls is the super bassy front pickup and it's not as bad on the SG. I think P90s are better in the front position to be honest for les pauls
In 1996 i saw No Doubt play on SNL, and became obsessed with the SG, took until 2004, but i got a gibson gothic SG and its been my main ever since. 2 decades of dents in the yellowed nitro. I love it
I just recently bought my first Gibson SG standard too , it’s a 2014 I bought off a fella on Kijiji , she’s in mint shape the price was right and I do not regret it either , all though I do have a epiphone custom SG that can without a doubt can go toe to toe with it , it’s an inspired by as well.
I too am mainly a Fender guy but did pick up a Gibson Les Paul Standard earlier this y…..umm last year. Fender and Gibson are the classics for me. Haven’t been able to get into PRS and those guys. Love the dry humor!
I'm planning on getting a 61 standard later this year. I wasn't a fan of the look of the SG for a long time but at my job I see them every day and it's really grown on me. Thom Yorke makes it look good, that's a big part of it. The neck is very thin on the 61 and I like the feel of it.
I tried one in a store. First time in played guitar in a store. I Fell in love . So a week later i bought myself one. Great guitar. I have. A black gigbag
I just got my first SG a few weeks ago too (from the Gibson Demo Shop). Mine is a 2021 SG Standard in Pelham Blue;it came with the same soft shell case, but in black. It's my 2nd Gibson though (bought a Les Paul Faded from the Demo Shop earlier this year). I've been mostly a Fender guy as well (modded into super strats).
The SG is by far my favorite Gibson. Look, weight, feel and sound. Yes, SOUND! I think it sounds way better than the Les Paul. This guitar sounds happy and CONFIDENT. The les Paul sounds dark and angry.
I love the look of Les Pauls too much and I love the dark sound of them. SG’s have never appealed to me personally. I appreciate what they represent and their heritage but I could never spend the money on one
Fender guy here, but I do have one Gibson in the arsenal. "The power of the brand", as you said, also an SG. The 2014, 120th Anniversary model. As far as Gibson's go, I like it.
I recently purchased the EPIPHONE SG Worn Cherry. With P 90s . I ve been TOTALLY impressed by it its incredible range and tonal capabilities. It does have a slight neck dive to it. But i can fix that like you said. I plan on getting another SG in the future so thx for the reaction. Plus I love the Letters SG on the truss rod cover. Mine was light @ 6 lbs 6 ounces. Probably around 3 kg??? Anyway keep up the great work. And yes my Red Wings take on your ( Da Leafs ) tonight. Tuff task for my slow sk8ting Wings to top the high flying Leafs. Have a great Friday
Beautiful guitar! My 2019 Standard (in 2019 the '61 style was called the Standard) with a hard case, a black Gibson leather strap and a Gibson multi-tool. It's interesting to see the difference a model year makes. I did send mine to Gibson Repair and restoration to take care of tool marks on the fretboard and neck binding. They did a fantastic job under warranty.
The SG was my choice for my first Gibson as well. I went for a brand new Standard 61’ in the GC exclusive Tobacco Sunburst finish. I’ve fallen in love with it and it will be lifelong guitar for me! It seems that over the past few years Gibson has really turned their QC issues around, unfortunately it seems like Fender are now the one with issues mainly on their USA models. My SG came out of the box flawless, minus a volume pot that went out after a few weeks which Gibson warrantied without issue. Enjoy your SG!
Congrats! I have the same model and I love it. I was/am a huge Badfinger fan (I was in my teens). George Harrison gave Pete Ham his SG (trem model). Also Eric Clapton's SG, 'The Fool', played on a lot of Cream tracks and of course Derek Trucks.
Since new ownership took over Gibson a few years ago they've really stepped up their game. I bought my 1st Gibson a year ago, a Les Paul Standard 60's in Unburst and it's flawless. The heritage cherry SG Standard is next.
I love Gibson guitars. I sold my Tele and Strat and got a Les Paul Standard 50s in Tobacco burst. I don’t regret it. It is the best guitar I have owned by far. Maybe an ebony SG next. Enjoy the guitar I love the SG
That looks like a finish check by the stop bar. That will only get longer and more will appear as the years go by but that's what happens to nitro in the winter unless you are super careful with temperatures. It's part of the charm of a nitro gloss finish.
I’d have a 335 and a Les Paul Jr myself. But I’ve always liked the idea of an SG. Gary Louis played one in the Jayhawks and I always loved his tone. Nice one.
I have a 2001 SG Standard that looks basically identical to that one. I really like the thick neck. It's not quite 50s, but very beefy. I just added some Kluson Revolution 19:1 ratio tuners. I do not like the 490R and 498T pickups in mine, so I am going to install some P90 style pickups soon. You should try the "top wrap" stringing method where you deck the tailpiece and route the strings toward the back of the guitar and wrap them over the top. The tailpiece is making solid contact with the top, but the reduced angle over the bridge lowers the tension of the strings. I think it is more comfortable that way.
Nashville is a little wider than the ABR1. If your strings are hitting the back of the bridge when the tail piece is screwed all the way down, sometimes an ABR1 one will fix it.
Landon...the nashville bridge has metal inserts that the bridge screws into...the “abr” bridge doesn’t use inserts, the adjustment thumbwheels screw directly into the body of the guitar...people argue over which one has better tone...you know the drill !!!
I've always been a fan of dot inlays so I bought a tribute sg. Walnut color. I couldn't be happier! Really light compared to other guitars that are heavy.
Got my 2004 used in 2010...and have bought/sold many guitars since....but NEVER the SG Std....plays so easily....sounds great too. And unlike my Traditional...it stays in tune.
Now you're playing authentic (Agnesi reference). That guitar looks and sounds great. The Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge is the one on this guitar. The original Tune-O-Matic version is called an ABR-1 which looks similar but is not as thick from front to back, has a wire across the intonation adjustment screws and is mounted on thin posts screwed directly into the body. I've had a black Standard for ten years and it's been great. Neck dive has never been a problem with a leather strap. The only design issue I've noticed is if you don't plug in an angled cord and use a straight end it gets in the way of the neck tone knob. The 5th and 7th fret inlays on mine are starting to lift out but it is not hard to fix.
@@landonbailey I wish they made a cable with an angled tip on each end. I am forced to use the angled end going in to my wah-wah because idiots would walk up to me when I would be playing a gig and step on the straight end going into the wah-wah and it would drive me crazy.
Nashville bridge might just be a newer style designed after they moved out of Michigan. 50’s Standard LP has the older style ABR bridge. Might have been designed for increased adjustment or was it cheaper to manufacture?
The Nashville bridge is WAY more stable from a construction point, since it's mounted tight in metal posts it can't lean forward under string pressure so easily. The ABR bridge is a historical feature / marketing ploy to make it seem more high end, yet it is easier and cheaper to implement.
@@landonbailey I loved watching how John Lennon throws phrases at the wall to see what sticks like he did on that song...his lyrical journey is hilarious to watch....he's like the Jackson Pollack of songwriters
Gibson can be spectacularly good, they have something in the feel when you pick them up, I can't explain it but you know it when you feel it, they are just different. Your sg sounds immense.
You're nuts! Nice review though. I have the '61 Maestro Vibrola SG (reissue) and like it very much. Being a Fender Stratocaster player my entire life (I'm 114 years old)...I don't do well without the Vibrola arm. SGs of this type get a bad rap for going out of tune with the Vibrola attachment but I use it for subtle tones and it's fine. Dive bombing may be a different story. Anyway it's my first Gibson SG and it's delightful. Glad you like yours -
thinking of buying my first Gibson. and I'm looking at a used/fresh SG. But I'm not sure about if I'm going to like it. i do enjoy the Epiphone SGs but not so much that I don't play my Tokai MIJ les paul.
I have 3 Sgs Gibson Standard Tribute and 2021 Epiphone modern figured Sg and 2019 Epiphone exclusive deluxe G400 Sg pro limited run the Epiphones is the better Sg by a country mile
This must be the year of the sg because right after I ordered mine (same as yours Landon) I saw a few more youtubers I follow get an sg. Never thought I would get a gibson unless I won the lottery, but that quarterly bonus check needed spending lol. Postman should be here before the weekend!
I’m a Fender guy too. I’ve only ever owned one Gibson, a red all original 1965 ES-335. It was in like new condition, and selling it is one of my all time biggest regrets…. If I ever get another Gibson, I’m thinking it will be an SG. I love the early faded ones with the moon inlays.
Landon I will appreciate if you start measuring potentiometers' value (like 250k, 500k) in your next deep dive videos, it would be very helpful to identify if a guitar's brightness caused by pots' higher value or the pickups themselves
Gibson typically uses 500k on their humbucker guitars to combat muddiness, and Fender typically uses 250k to tame brightness of their single coils. That’s pretty much standard. You can safely assume this SG has 500k pots.
The gigbag you got it's nicer than the one I got with 2 of my Gibsons, but I think at least with 1 of them I got more accessories and gadgets including a multi-tool for repair and maintenance. With the "The Paul" I got an hard case.
It's sounds good, like an SG should. Yep, exploring new & different guitars is fun. SG's in general had been off my radar but I tried an Epi SG Muse and really like it. I could see getting an Gibson version of some description down the track.
Thanks again Landy you usually guitar with troy. I'll happen to love gibson's. I'm an old fart and everyone that I love to play gibson's. My main love is the firebird. 1973 Johnny winter's third album comes out and on the cover he's holding his firework. That was my that was the start of a love of Firebirds and of Johnny Winter who is my favorite. And I know he's hanging out in heaven and wishing he's still at his firebird there maybe he does who knows? LOL I didn't mention the price on my last comment that I paid for my Firebirds and the firebird is stacked with specs. For instance it came with steinberger tuners these are amazing tunas that the easiest then and best soon as I have on any of my guitars. They fit the firebird perfectly because. Stop voice test Chrome on the front of the headstock when you lock them in and they're beautiful in the back is bigger turn them so sort of like the original banditsuness in that respect. Those those tuners are really expensive. It's got titanium saddles it's got cryogenically treated threats originally I thought that was some kind of snake oil thing like tone polishers advertised for. I actually resourced it quite a genital cryogenically treated metal is used in aeronautics and space it increases the strength and hardness by 400% of its original it's original hardness. So yeah it really is a thing and so far the frets haven't even worn a bit quite and I played a lot and I would think they're on par with it's not better than stainless steel because and you don't get that brightness that you get from stainless steel. I can go on with the specs but I'll leave it at that. I paid out the door delivered with a case a case of the size of a coffin with a leather strap with the all-in-one guitar tool kit $1,340 $1,340 yeah the guitar is worth quite a bit more used than it was when the for what I paid for it new. I though do not buy a guitar ever with the sort of selling it. It's nice to know guitars you have of increasing value all of mine have just in these past few years. Because I love the guitars I buy that's why I buy them if I didn't like if the guitar specifically maybe there was a blemish on it something didn't play right you know I would send it back for another one but I wouldn't just sell a perfectly good guitar that I bought because I wanted. Well I'm my next purchase will be another ramp I own it one two band stage right 15 watt 2 band yeah stays right monoprice no it's not a piece of shit it happens to be an amazing amp and if he's anything and it's a category. I also own the boss katana KTN 100 version 1 since I'm blind I never bothered the helping it up to a computer so it hasn't even been updated. I play it like I would any am just as it is. I also own another way that won't even mention I gave it to someone that's alona I'll mention it was the first thing if I want to go along with my first guitar in 27 years the yesterday on now it's a mustang one virgin one. When I first plugged my guitar into it I had nothing at all to compare it to cuz again I hadn't touched anything it's all related as close to 30 years and I was happy with it and I was pretty amazing what I could do. But once I bought the katana and realize that that mustang version 1 I guess says The beginner's practice app is fine but it's basically has the weather used to me except loading it out lol. And I'm thinking of buying the 50 watt I think it's the sb20 stage right head all too bad which is another amazing amp is 400 bucks. I was thinking of buying a Harley Benton vertical twin cabinet 2x12 with celestion vintage 30s in them but my stage right 15w has an output for speaker extension cabinet so I could use it for that and then I can use it for the head if I'm not mistaken the head has three ohm options on the back I mean if anyone reads this and knows nothing about it go check out the reviews and the specs on the 50 watt stays right mono price you'll be very surprised. And yeahyeah I think you people will be surprised if they check that out. I should have bought a better ram probably after my first or second guitar cuz the truth is your guitar is only going to sound as good as the amp and the speaker was coming out of. But you know I wanted a good guitar you know I'm going to stop playing again I don't want to have to fucking kill myself and my hands and fingers trying to play the guitar again. I never realized how much I depended on looking at the key at the fretboard and my hands when I was playing but apparently it was all the time. Now I play I'm not as good as I was then but I still have I don't play as often as I did that either but you know my age I got arthritis carpal tunnel syndrome all that crap so and the biggest problem is not being able to see what I'm playing if my problems you can see but I'm playing I would have progressed much quicker and who knows how well I'll be playing now. But yeah now I just pick up the guitar and we can look because if I look I don't see LOL anyway I'll stop here cuz another novel thanks for your video man again enjoy your guitar and buy another gibson. You know for the prices I charge for a lustful standard and the price to charge for a standard firebird 5 I don't see why people don't buy the firebird. They sound remarkably different. That's probably a reason sincerely us, about the blind personas PS my my SG isn't as light as I hear other people say and I don't think it's as thin as the other it might be but definitely sooner than a Les Paul that's for sure it's as soon as in my firebird I don't think so? I'm not sure. But yeah I advise people to play if I ever see what you're saying
Damn! So much wanted one of these but for me the neck just felt weirdly long and when I was sat down it kind of wanted to point downward too. It made it feel like I was reaching out too far with my fret hand. The only thing I put this down to was the body shape. As a beginner used to a Les Paul style guitar (too heavy) it was yet another thing I would have to learn or adapt to?. Shame as its such a nice looking and nice sounding guitar...maybe I am a bit hasty sending it back but it really did put me off. Classic beginner mistake - should always try before you buy as however much the guitar fits your dreams it might not fit you. Maybe its just me.
Thank you for your perspective. I have an inbound Gibson SG 61 standard. Neck dive is a thing with SGs. A friend put some lead weights in the controls cavity to eliminate the issue. I personally want to experience the tones an SG produces and I believe the tones are more dynamic than a Les Paul... correct me if I'm wrong!
Landon Bailey Tarbacks (officially named “Super Humbuckers”) were Humbuckers made for certain Norlin era Gibsons by Bill Lawrence in the 70s. They were lower resistance (around 5k neck and 7.5k bridge) but had ceramic pickups and, I think, were the first potted Gibson humbuckers (the epoxy used to pot the coils is what “tar back” refers to.
I have been wanting to buy another Gibson for quite a while, what has turned me off from doing so was the soft cases. I hated the idea of having a expensive guitar in a crap bag when they use to give cases. Well I finally decided to buy a Les paul a few days ago and I'll be honest, I like the soft case better then the hard case. And the craftsman ship is excellent.. Great job Gibson. Can't wait to buy another soon
Nice guitar, Landon! I wish I could jive with the SG, but every one I've ever picked up just feels off to me. It's such a different feel than a Les Paul, which I am much more accustomed to. Hopefully I can get over it, cuz I think every collection needs an SG. Such an iconic instrument.
Happy for you amigo! To me I 95% sound the same on a Epiphone to a Gibson. Owned a Gibson back in the 90s, it was alright. I will take my Epiphone Les Paul Special over a Gibson. Just as happy if not happier with it. Enjoy! I hope it brings you happiness😎👍✨
Badfinger! “If you want it, here it is, come and get….” Nitro is so soft you can scratch it with a fingernail and you have to be careful with what you use when cleaning it. I have never had a Gibson or Epiphone, but a friend has an acoustic from the 60s that I played a few times that is really nice. I am a Martin and Fender owner and just never found one that spoke to me.
happy new year and gratz to that great SG dude! I wanted to buy it in the ebenony finish in 21 and this year i will also be a proud owmner. the playability is fantastic
beginning 21 i got a translucent red classic LP which is unbelievable, then a tribute SG, which is also a fantastic guitar .. the next is that SG! ;) the Epiphones are great but not really comparable to a gibson .. thats the way i feel
I bought one a couple of months ago. Very nice guitar and by far the best sounding in terms of tone. However I hate the fact that Gibson discontinued the wine red colour. Heritage Cherry is cool and that but it's way too bright.
I just picked one up a week or so ago. Brand new on sale in a guitar center with $400 off and they took another $100 off when i asked if there was any wiggle room. At that price it made sense because the alternative was the Epi 61 that costs $1000. The Gibson was $1299 and will definitely hold value better. On top of that i was able to play that Gibson whereas the Epi would have been ordered from a warehouse so may have been a good one or a bad one.
First electric guitar was a Samick with HH, swamp ash top/body, bound, with stop bar tailpiece. I didn't care. I just wanted to go from cleans to DOD FX-69 Grunge distortion with a stomp. (It was my only pedal, because it was the only pedal I will ever need.) The first time I saw a guitar that made me drool was the late 90s Gibson DC Pro in that blue finish. The next guitar shape I fell in love with was the Explorer. Not because someone I liked played it, or because I was into Coheed for a while (still am). It just looked like a middle finger to the conventional guitar shapes. Even the Flying V with its defining symmetry. Kinda has been since 1958. Still, I prefer Telecasters to anything else. Something about the no-frills design makes me think of the US military trainings manuals (I've never served). This is all you get; it's more than we had to give you; it's hard to mess this up; and you can make it do just about anything. Still, just like I think Ford vehicles are more aesthetically pleasing but would still rather drive a GM vehicle, I think Gibson models are better looking but would almost always want to play a Fender first.
I'm like you man - the "Squier/Fender guy" for some reason. Have never liked the "hard rock" AC/DC Gibson image but Robby Krieger is one of my favs. I also loved James Iha playing that black LP Custom in the 90's. The necks look my cup of tea too with the shorter scale (fan of Jags/Mustangs). I love binding and inlays too. Even LPs are looking more affordable with those tribute models. Hmmmm.
Robby krieger is by far my favorite SG player. It’s the only Gibson I have too, mine has a firebird pickup in the neck tho. I’ve been looking at picking up one of those soft cases, do you think they are any good?
You hit the nail on the head, Gibson has a love/hate relationship with customers. Frankly speaking, not a fan of the price, even the SG starts at $1500 when it should probably be more on the $1000 mark, Quality Control is well, makes me want to take a flight out to their facility and start yelling at them for some of the crap i have seen that never should have left a factory without being labeled Bstock or scratch and dent, When you do get a good one you get a good one, due to the break angle on the nut with the strings if you have tuning issues where it won't stay in tune longer than 5 min. get a string butler and it will solve the problem. I love the PCB design of the electronics, almost reminds me of Obsidian Wire kits except Gibson uses the JST-XH connectors. BTW Landon is you don't already have a set I recommend getting a Connector kit of them and the Dupont Connectors, Especially for Strats where you can do pickguard swaps. faster and more efficiently rather than having 3-5 laying around in different configs you can just have pickguards setup..
I was inspired by Gibson to buy a Gibson SG Standard from the Modern series.

ya sucked. someone pointed out a couple graphics were messed up. so I had to fix it and do it over.
People seem to think they are only rock guitars but they can do surf, jazz, country, jangle. Amazing guitars.
I never really liked the looks of the SG, until I played one and now I absolutely love the damn thing.
I never used to like the look of certain Teles :)
@@landonbailey BLASPHEMY!!!
Yeah sometimes I like the look when it's a darker red or cream white. But the brighter red models I often find to 'aggressive' looking with the horns
SGs are for me are the most underrated electric guitars, glad I opened my eyes to them.
thanks for sharing!
The classic/vintage Gibson bridge is called an ABR and they screwed right into the body of the guitar. The Nashville bridge was an update on that. The Nashville bridge screws into metal bushings in the body and it has a thumbwheel that raises or lowers the entire bridge. The Nashville bridge is also wider than the original ABR.
that sounds like a quality upgrade. thanks for the info
@@landonbailey it is an upgrade in every way but guitarists being guitarists some people still insist the ABR is better. An equivalent fender argument is top loader vs. string through.
@@Dram1984 ah cool, I can relate to that comparison lol
Can that tail piece be top wrapped?
I would prefer bacon wrapped :)
Anyway, thanks for the video and hope you have many hours of enjoyment playing your new guitar.
cheers thanks for sharing!
Another completely enjoyable video from Landon.
I love his dry humor and it's always worth the time.
Thanks!

The only guitar channel where I actually want to listen to the commentary and not just skip thru it. Great tones too 🤘🏻
Love my SGs. I have 2 now, a Standard and a Custom. Had more Gibsons but sold some off and hot my first Telecaster that I love as well. Still, my SGs are my absolute favorites. Congrats on your first Gibson!
🎸👍
The SG is the best choice by far for me. Sounds great, not exactly like a Les Paul but close enough for a guitar that's like half the weight. The necks tend to be a little wider than stratocasters but their high fret access is way better. They do have neck dive issues, but like Landon said, they're easily solved. There's a reason it's the best selling guitar Gibson makes.
cheers!
do they really sell more sg´s than les pauls? i would have clearly said it´s the lp
@@trent69marc If so, I'm sure it has a lot to do with AC/DC. :)
Longest time nobody wanted an SG, this year they became popular again and are outrageous prices. If you want an SG wait till next year when the market is flooded.
I think its in the sweet spot in terms of price too. Sadly I didnt hit it off with mine though.
I got my first this past year too. I saw an ugly refin'd, with pickups swapped, '74 ES-345 that just played really well. It's the only Gibson I've ever owned even after playing a bunch of SG's and Les Paul's, and I'm really happy with it. I've really been interested in the SG but I might hold off because I'm building a telecaster -I'm sure that'll catch your attention.
ah cool! builds are fun 👍
Wait till next year and the market will be flooded with cheap SG's. They got popular again recently and every company producing an SG style with crazy prices.
@@koDaffi I'm looking into the 61 sideways vibrola.
I appreciate that!
Bingo!
@@landonbailey Holy moley, Landon. I got my SG Special….. Ahhh…. WAY before you were even born! Yikes! G
@@GaryKatz How do you know when LB was born? (Asked by a person who is a direct result of the early hippies generation) ;-)
Also the 61 variant has the typically preferred Burst Bucker pickups and a hardshell case.
good info cheers!
Not necessarily better than Fender or Gretsch or others but have that special Rock and R&R sound.
thanks for sharing
Nothing wrong with that man, variety is the spice of life 🤘
that's why I like Dr. Pepper
I love it
Got my first sg recently, a relatively cheap used epi sg special. It’s already my favorite guitar I own.
congrats!
I just recently bought my first Gibson SG standard too , it’s a 2014 I bought off a fella on Kijiji , she’s in mint shape the price was right and I do not regret it either , all though I do have a epiphone custom SG that can without a doubt can go toe to toe with it , it’s an inspired by as well.
cool!
I too am mainly a Fender guy but did pick up a Gibson Les Paul Standard earlier this y…..umm last year. Fender and Gibson are the classics for me. Haven’t been able to get into PRS and those guys. Love the dry humor!
🤪🎸
I'm planning on getting a 61 standard later this year. I wasn't a fan of the look of the SG for a long time but at my job I see them every day and it's really grown on me. Thom Yorke makes it look good, that's a big part of it. The neck is very thin on the 61 and I like the feel of it.
nice! ya he plays his a lot
Keep an eye out for 2013 SG standards, they're 61' spec for much cheaper.
I've been mostly a Fender guy as well (modded into super strats).
nice!
I love hearing SGs when others play them, but don't like how I sound playing them. You rock it tight, good job. The nitro Gibson smell is addictive 🎸
Rock on!
The SG is by far my favorite Gibson. Look, weight, feel and sound. Yes, SOUND! I think it sounds way better than the Les Paul. This guitar sounds happy and CONFIDENT. The les Paul sounds dark and angry.
the Les Paul I have is darker sounding
I love the look of Les Pauls too much and I love the dark sound of them. SG’s have never appealed to me personally. I appreciate what they represent and their heritage but I could never spend the money on one
Fender guy here, but I do have one Gibson in the arsenal. "The power of the brand", as you said, also an SG. The 2014, 120th Anniversary model. As far as Gibson's go, I like it.
Great choice Landon, congrats I have a Gibson Les Paul standard premium in Tea Burst that I purchased in 2013 and is my cherished possession.
Rock on!
Good call. SGs are awesome.
Right on
Beautiful guitar! They did a fantastic job under warranty.
ya interesting to see the changes
I love my 2002 SG, sounds and plays fantastic....
🎸👍
Thanks for the info!
That's a beauty Landon. Welcome to Gibson land. Happy New Guitar Day!
cheers!
Since new ownership took over Gibson a few years ago they've really stepped up their game. I bought my 1st Gibson a year ago, a Les Paul Standard 60's in Unburst and it's flawless. The heritage cherry SG Standard is next.
🎸👍
I love Gibson guitars. I sold my Tele and Strat and got a Les Paul Standard 50s in Tobacco burst. I don’t regret it. It is the best guitar I have owned by far. Maybe an ebony SG next. Enjoy the guitar I love the SG
nice!
Nashville, the posts are in studs in the body, historic ABR-1 looks nearly identical, but the posts are directly into the body
cool thanks!
@@landonbailey happy to help.
That looks like a finish check by the stop bar. That will only get longer and more will appear as the years go by but that's what happens to nitro in the winter unless you are super careful with temperatures. It's part of the charm of a nitro gloss finish.
I didn't notice! at what point were you able to see it? cheers
@@landonbailey I was referring to the little scratch you pointed out.
oh this scratch in on the back side. I was probably showing b-roll and talking about a different thing
@@landonbailey Nevermind I watched it again it was the reflection of the stopbar in the finish lol.
I’d have a 335 and a Les Paul Jr myself. But I’ve always liked the idea of an SG. Gary Louis played one in the Jayhawks and I always loved his tone. Nice one.
👍🎸
I have a 2001 SG Standard that looks basically identical to that one. I really like the thick neck. It's not quite 50s, but very beefy. I just added some Kluson Revolution 19:1 ratio tuners. I do not like the 490R and 498T pickups in mine, so I am going to install some P90 style pickups soon. You should try the "top wrap" stringing method where you deck the tailpiece and route the strings toward the back of the guitar and wrap them over the top. The tailpiece is making solid contact with the top, but the reduced angle over the bridge lowers the tension of the strings. I think it is more comfortable that way.
cheers!
Nashville is a little wider than the ABR1. If your strings are hitting the back of the bridge when the tail piece is screwed all the way down, sometimes an ABR1 one will fix it.
cheers thanks!
Landon...the nashville bridge has metal inserts that the bridge screws into...the “abr” bridge doesn’t use inserts, the adjustment thumbwheels screw directly into the body of the guitar...people argue over which one has better tone...you know the drill !!!
cool thanks!
I've always been a fan of dot inlays so I bought a tribute sg. Walnut color. I couldn't be happier! Really light compared to other guitars that are heavy.
nice congrats!
I have an Epiphone SG Sunburst. Probably the most comfortable guitar to play. I'm a Fender Tele/Esquire/Start guy mostly. But highly recommend these.
thanks for sharing :)
Got my 2004 used in 2010...and have bought/sold many guitars since....but NEVER the SG Std....plays so easily....sounds great too. And unlike my Traditional...it stays in tune.
🎸👍
I have to use an angled cable. A straight in cable would drive me nuts. cheers!
@@landonbailey I wish they made a cable with an angled tip on each end. I am forced to use the angled end going in to my wah-wah because idiots would walk up to me when I would be playing a gig and step on the straight end going into the wah-wah and it would drive me crazy.
yes I would totally buy that!
I bought a few Planet Waves American Stage cables that are angled on both ends. Don't think they're too difficult to get.
@@Riversider11 Thanks for the info. I didn't know about those and my local store only had cables with only one end angled.
Fender player all my life as well - only today I got my first Gibson! The one you hold here - 2021 Standard SG.
Enjoyed hearing that “Dig a Pony” at the start. Classic.
ya it's been in my head a lot :)
@@landonbailey Same here. All of the “Get Back” songs are top of mind lately.

Amazing Canadian rock guitarist, Frank Marino, played an SG. Congratulations, Landon, that’s a gorgeous guitar! 👏

Gibson can be spectacularly good, they have something in the feel when you pick them up, I can't explain it but you know it when you feel it, they are just different. Your sg sounds immense.
ya these humbuckers rock
I have 3 Sgs Gibson Standard Tribute and 2021 Epiphone modern figured Sg and 2019 Epiphone exclusive deluxe G400 Sg pro limited run the Epiphones is the better Sg by a country mile
nice!
Got the same one and it plays better than almost any guitar I have ever had. Well worth the money \m/
nice congrats! nice case too
This must be the year of the sg because right after I ordered mine (same as yours Landon) I saw a few more youtubers I follow get an sg. Never thought I would get a gibson unless I won the lottery, but that quarterly bonus check needed spending lol. Postman should be here before the weekend!
very cool! I know Steve from Boston got one in Ebony. have fun with it!
I’m a Fender guy too. I’ve only ever owned one Gibson, a red all original 1965 ES-335. It was in like new condition, and selling it is one of my all time biggest regrets…. If I ever get another Gibson, I’m thinking it will be an SG. I love the early faded ones with the moon inlays.
ah cool!
Landon back with another great video and review!
Thanks again!
I just got the same one as a gift. Very nice guitar, I love it and the case is sweet as well.
Very nice gift! congrats
Landon I will appreciate if you start measuring potentiometers' value (like 250k, 500k) in your next deep dive videos, it would be very helpful to identify if a guitar's brightness caused by pots' higher value or the pickups themselves
hey I forgot to in this one! I've done it in a ton of other videos, so it wouldn't be a start :)
Gibson typically uses 500k on their humbucker guitars to combat muddiness, and Fender typically uses 250k to tame brightness of their single coils. That’s pretty much standard. You can safely assume this SG has 500k pots.
cool vid. I have a 1998 SG '61 Reissue. Had it since new. Barely play it however. I'm a tele guy now.
Rock on!
The gigbag you got it's nicer than the one I got with 2 of my Gibsons, but I think at least with 1 of them I got more accessories and gadgets including a multi-tool for repair and maintenance. With the "The Paul" I got an hard case.
it will get offended if you call it that. it's a soft shell case 😝🎸👍
@@landonbailey my apologies
It's sounds good, like an SG should. Yep, exploring new & different guitars is fun. SG's in general had been off my radar but I tried an Epi SG Muse and really like it. I could see getting an Gibson version of some description down the track.
it's a rock machine
Hey Landon, sorry you had to reupload. I sang along with your "The Bends" riffs the first go around. It was a good time. Cheers!
Ha Cool, thanks! ya a couple parts displayed a giant red T error screen. had to fix it :)
Maybe its just me.
it's not just you, it's just not for you 👍🎸😃
Zal Clemminson from The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. My favourite SG player.

I think the neck dives more down to the poorly positioned strap button than the weight..
My 83 SG has the Grover tuners as well and the tar back pickups.
nice! I don't know those pickups though. sound good?
Landon Bailey Tarbacks (officially named “Super Humbuckers”) were Humbuckers made for certain Norlin era Gibsons by Bill Lawrence in the 70s. They were lower resistance (around 5k neck and 7.5k bridge) but had ceramic pickups and, I think, were the first potted Gibson humbuckers (the epoxy used to pot the coils is what “tar back” refers to.
Love the REM outro 👍🏻🎸👍🏻🎸
great simple riff!
Can't wait to buy another soon
ya the case is awesome!
Nice guitar, Landon! I wish I could jive with the SG, but every one I've ever picked up just feels off to me. It's such a different feel than a Les Paul, which I am much more accustomed to. Hopefully I can get over it, cuz I think every collection needs an SG. Such an iconic instrument.
ya check out more to find one that suits you
I love mine as well, good choice!
awesome!
@@landonbailey Mine was made in August of 2020.

Happy for you amigo! To me I 95% sound the same on a Epiphone to a Gibson. Owned a Gibson back in the 90s, it was alright. I will take my Epiphone Les Paul Special over a Gibson. Just as happy if not happier with it.
Enjoy! I hope it brings you happiness😎👍✨
for me the SG connects to Dry Cleaning guitar player ....... he makes me wanna get one
Thomann has a USA store now also.
cool, I'm in Canada
Dude that sounded sick with the octave pedal! This is my main guitar in ebony tho. It's a great axe.

I wanted to buy it in the ebenony finish in 21 and this year i will also be a proud owmner. the playability is fantastic
beginning 21 i got a translucent red classic LP which is unbelievable, then a tribute SG, which is also a fantastic guitar .. the next is that SG! ;) the Epiphones are great but not really comparable to a gibson .. thats the way i feel
go for it! 👍🎸
I bought one a couple of months ago. Very nice guitar and by far the best sounding in terms of tone. However I hate the fact that Gibson discontinued the wine red colour. Heritage Cherry is cool and that but it's way too bright.
great pickups!
Hay Landon my ultimate most favorite guitar would be my 1964 Mustang competition
sounds great thats a keeper
it feels like it!
Just bought an sg standard as well I love the neck. I’m mad I got the wrong bag at guitar center
Congrats!
@@landonbaileydo you think they can find the right paperwork for my guitar? Great video very funny
Paid $1,300 for my Gibson Standard Tribute Sg.. so yes you got a great deal
🎸👍
👍🎸
Love it. Life is short, by an SG!
someone said that once
I'm like you man - the "Squier/Fender guy" for some reason. Have never liked the "hard rock" AC/DC Gibson image but Robby Krieger is one of my favs. I also loved James Iha playing that black LP Custom in the 90's. The necks look my cup of tea too with the shorter scale (fan of Jags/Mustangs). I love binding and inlays too. Even LPs are looking more affordable with those tribute models. Hmmmm.
🎸👍
Damn!!! Now I really want one. Looks super nice.
super light and fun
Robby krieger is by far my favorite SG player. It’s the only Gibson I have too, mine has a firebird pickup in the neck tho. I’ve been looking at picking up one of those soft cases, do you think they are any good?
I think they are what I said in the video :)
I like the 490 pups a lot, you said that ones a modern? It might have push pull pots to split or tap (whatever...) the humbuckers.
it's an SG Standard, in the Modern series. There's also an SG Modern which matches the specs you mention
I just got one too...Les Paul Studio...
very nice!
