Thanks! I think they sound great, too. So hot and responsive, very nice. I think it's all a function of how far you sit from the TV. If you're right up on it (within a few feet), 1080p would be noticeable. But at 20+ feet away, my eye just can't resolve the extra detail. In fact, the better gamma performance and black levels of the LEDs really make the picture a lot better than the old one.
I was a huge RUSH fan. Saw them on the Signals Tour in '83 at the Worcester Centrum. Had third row center seats and was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Yeah, the boost can be switched with a simple two-way switch or a push-pull pot. I'll pull the boost jumper at the next string change. I'm curious to hear it, too. Thanks about the damage. I was able to fix the fence on the porch pretty quickly, but I have to wait for the ground to thaw before I can fix the fence in the back yard. It's 27 degrees and lightly snowing right now.
Mark, I'm using a Tascam digital mixer and connecting with a Tascam digital card made just for their mixer series. I have a video called "My Rig" that goes into it in more detail. The mixer and card have long been discontinued, but I'm pretty slow to upgrade my equipment, so I'm planning on using it until they break (or until the software is 64-bit only; this rig is 32-bit).
Thanks, JC! I thought the neck pickup almost sounded like an acoustic. There's such a scoop of the mids that it really had that acoustic tone. Too bad about the work (unless you work for yourself and it means a lot more cash, then it's awesome!). Looking forward to your next awesome vid. Have a great week!
I got the porch railing fixed, but the backyard fence will have to wait until the ground thaws. It's 28 degrees and lightly snowing right now. I love Costco. It's pretty much my favorite place to shop. I bought the last TV there 3 years ago, but I've already moved way beyond my warranty, even with the Costco extension. Plus, they already fixed that one twice, so I think Hannspree is done doing anything to it. I have to say, the new one looks awesome. The picture is definitely better.
Thanks! I will definitely check those out. I've heard of both, but I don't think I've ever installed one. The nut on this one is actually pretty good, so I've stuck with it. I've been using a mix of graphite and ceramic lube with all of my non-locking nuts and it's been working out pretty well for tuning. But like you say, the material will definitely make for better tone, which is always a good thing.
I just totally enjoy your videos, they are more like a visit than anything else. You make it feel like two friends just yakkin about guitars and TV's........ thanks for the visit. I am so interested in doing what you have done to that les paul, checking into next week, maybe a inexpensive Epiphone and these pick ups..... hmmmm
Thanks! Crazy Train is one I definitely know, but I worry about copyright issues. I'll take a look and see how others are doing with covers and see if it's worth taking on. The Skid Row tune I'm familiar with, but I don't think I know how to play it. I have one video posted of my old band, but it's audio only. It's a cover of Surfing with the Alien and I just play it back from an old cassette I found.
I have one 7-string, a Universe copy I bought 2.5 years ago. The neck, body and pickups are surprisingly good, but the bridge is one of those "quick-load" non-locking ones, so it has weak tuning stability. I wanted to change it with a nice locking 7-string Floyd Rose tremolo, but too many other priorities along the way. Until I get a new roof on the house it's unlikely to get changed anytime soon.
Thanks, Tony! I think these pickups are just insanely good. I'm looking forward to taking the boost function off and seeing how the bridge sounds with lower gain. I suspect it will still be really hot. :)
I'm running through a Tascam digital mixer with a matching PCI card. They connect through a TDIF cable (a proprietary Tascam technology). I have Roket 5 studio monitors, but I don't use them during the videos. I run a stereo cable out directly to the camera from the mixer.
Man, those pickups do sound incredible!! The neck one sounds real sweet with the Clean patch... Dude, I had a crazy week, too; work, work and work... Not much time for music... Have a rocking weekend, Steve! - JC
That's a great idea. I'll give that a try later today. I'll pull the boost jumper the next time I change the strings. I'm curious to hear it without the boost.
I've heard about that, but I haven't seen it. I see a promo vid, but the full video isn't on RUclips. I think he has a Garage Band Artist lesson, too, but I'm not sure if he does Limelight (the promo vid is Tom Sawyer).
Thanks! I have tried the Songsterr website, but I find a lot of their tabs aren't accurate (it's hit or miss). For example, Limelight looks mostly correct but there's a few parts that are clearly wrong fingerings -- the right notes, but there's no way he's playing using their suggested fingerings.
Thanks! I have to keep the riffs short or RUclips may give me some grief. I listened to the section you mentioned and I think it's a take on Only Women Bleed by Alice Cooper. He actually uses an alternate tuning and in a different key, but the major/minor 6ths is the essence of the tune, so it sounds similar.
Wow, I haven't heard about those in a long while. We weren't a BBE dealer back in the day, but we did sell the Dolby version of it. They were all the rage in the late 80s, early 90s.
Hey, Steve! Love the sound of the Duncans. Really brought that import to life. You should check out a GraphTech NVS Harmonic Bridge in your browsing. Ever since installing one, along with a TUSQ XL nut on an Epi LP (w/Duncan Jazz/'59), the improvement in tone, and tuning stability is substantial. Can't recommend them highly enough for LP-Style guitars.
That's a great idea. I'll take a look into it. I have one in the attic on the home theater rig, a Monster Power HTS3500. It's probably a good idea to put something in the basement.
No, though I came really close to doing it. I can get a pretty nice Gotoh replacement for around $25, but I'm in total money lock down until a put a new roof on the house. That's my main priority right now.
That's probably my favorite Ted tune. It's just got the greatest rock feel. I'll see if there are any else up here on RUclips. That will be a good indicator as to whether they're blocking covers of it (like they do for a lot of Zep tunes).
Loving this video as I do all of your others. Just fun stuff to watch. I have to ask though. Do you have any 7 strings? Or is that just not something you are in too? I'd love to see you shred some 7s or 8s. I have these pickups in my 7. :D
Check the input volume of the guitar. You should be hitting the green section on a regular basis. Low input will cause quick cuts on the gate because there's not enough signal to keep it open.
Yes Steve, Friggin weather, we must be neighbors!..Im in Connecticut!!..Geezis!! 60 degrees!!2 Degrees???..Im glad I have my guitars and music!!..And thank you for not giving up on the video, I look foward to watching them!
I bought the Gotoh Large post Tune-O-Matic Bridge Chrome - just the actual bridge - not the pins for like $17 on ebay from a legit seller. It should be here in a few days. Apparently it fits the "imports" perfectly. Hey, how difficult was the pickups swap? I've only soldered a few wires before in guitars. Was the wiring schematic easy to follow? I run Guitar rig 5 and Th2 as well - loving the sounds you are getting.
I do have a video called "My Rig" that goes into my setup in more detail. Just know that I don't use the ART preamp any longer. The tube burned out and I haven't had a chance to replace it. But I get asked this in almost every video, so perhaps it's time to make a follow-up video.
ì don't remember if i mentioned this in the comment section of the previous video but i love those duncans:D probably getting them soon:D Sorry to hear about all the misfortune around the house and the video production and stuff:( thanks for keeping at it, still watch them all:D Curious to hear the difference without the boost function, i like to keep it clean for some tunes since i'm in a lot of cover projects that do so many different genres. Is it also possible to switch that boost function?
Hey.. great video.. that tv u are talking about that dont work anymore, hey, the capacitors are the most common thing that break in them.. open the back of the tv and look at all the electrolytic capacitors and see if some of them are swollen, if so, just order some new ones and put in.. and the tv should work again.. i have done this repair on alot of LCD tv´s and its VERY common when the screen gets black, green white or when the tv just will not work.. this is casued by overheating.
Awesome Channel Brother!! Was wondering about the TH-2. I use a Scarlett 2i4 Interface. For some reason I am getting a "dry" signal even though I am getting a relatively low "wet" signal, plus getting some latency. I ca fix the latency, but the other issue is driving me nuts!! Also...I use Th-2 as a plug in verses a stand alone. I use Reaperr as
Thanks! I think I know some of that one. I'll have to listen to it again to be sure. I knew a lot of Whitesnake back in the day, so I'm pretty sure I know the old one with Moody playing guitar. The re-release with Vai is pretty scary. haha
I already fixed the porch decorative fencing. That just looked like hell, so I made it a priority. The back fence is being held up by my neighbor's shrubs, so I'll work on that one this weekend. The panel inserts a crushed a bit, so I'll have to get some galvanized strapping to tie the sections back together. Never ends! lol
Yikes! When my grandmother was in her 90s and kind of out of it, my wife and I stopped by to say hello. My wife immediately noticed water dripping from the ceiling light and I ran upstairs to find the toilet overflowing and two inches of water on the floor and growing. I quickly shut it off and my wife waited with her while I ran back to the house and grabbed my wet/dry vac. What a close call. If we didn't stop by, who knows the kind of damage could have happened, or even a fire. Scary!
Hey Pixxy, could you do a crazy train cover and also a skid row 18 and life cover? Thanks man, you are awesome. Also, i keep asking if you have any old vids or audio of your old band, would love to hear it.
lol yes thats what is so great about the band!!! lol how they come up with all those progressions and not to mention odd time signatures which is another great reason why they are so great!!!
Thanks! I'm just outside of Boston, so we're in the general area. Got some flakes falling out there right now. Like they say, if you don't like the weather in New England, wait a minute. hehe...
It's not as bright as the Guitar Rig patch, but I thought it sounded pretty good. But yeah, it's definitely not as bright as the GR patch and this is amp only, while the GR patch uses a modeled Tube Screamer in front of the amp.
I love the sound set up! I recently ordered on of those guitars and I am seriously considering putting in those Blackouts in it. I have never used active pickups before, what are the benefits Good/Bad? Thanks, Brad P
I see.. i am thinking about putting in the same as u have in this guitar.. in my Les Paul standard.. now i have those new Burstbuckers pro.. with 4x push pull pots,...
So how are you running your guitar through the PC? I downloaded TH2 because you use it a lot and IT sounds amazing but I am missing whatever you are using to run your guitar through the PC. Also what speakers are you running it through?
Nice pick ups Steve, I think I may put them in my ahhh "copy" also. LOL Sure makes the guitar come alive. I guess you know this but 1080P or I really doesn't make a difference until you get in the large screen TVs ie 50 and above. 720 is all you'll ever need with a smaller screen, but I'm sure you knew that. Rock on my friend love the videos.
Hi Steve, could you let me know what you connect your instruments to to connect to your laptop, to run TH2? ie, are you using a "Zoom pedal" via USB or? thanks a ton. cheers. Mark :)
I've tried it and it didn't sound very good. I'll try again with a different mic and see how it sounds. Plus, I mostly record late at night, when I can't turn an amp on. That's why I use the software. It sounds good and it's completely silent (only in my headphones and run directly into the camera).
Hey steve, I know this is off topic but, can i use the digitec rp350 foot pedal for the guitar rig 5? There is one for sale cheap here and i have the guitar rig software but no way to hook my guitar to my computer. Thanks.
Hey Steve, I have some problems with TH2's noise gate. I have the threshold pretty high because of the noise and when I bend a string the note fades very quickly because of the gate. What should I do?
Hi!. I want to replace my pickups for a heavier tone in a Les Paul (I just play metal, rhythmic). I have doubts between SD Distorsion passives and these actives Blackouts for this specific type of guitar (mahogany body and neck by the way). What would you recommend after have been both?. Thanks!
News, Weather updates, Jams, Home repair plans, electronic item purchase advice this channel has it all !! You need a co-host to just sit on the couch in the back round half in camera view and he maybe makes like 3 small comments during every vid call him Ed McJamms...
Sorry, I have no idea. I'm not familiar with that product. I can recommend the Line6 and Presonus guitar interfaces. They're pretty good and not too expensive (about $100-$150).
Yeah, they are huge improvement over the stock crap. It's really turned into a metal machine. The Superbowl was last night. It looked like a blowout, but then it got all tied up. And they had a power outage which stopped play for a little while. The NFL must have been livid! They run a tight ship.
It's surprisingly different than I thought it was. lol I used to play the straight chords and not the more complex variations. It makes a huge difference. Leave it to RUSH to use a minor11 chord. haha
Steve - you might try playing with (i.e. lowering) the pickup height on the Blackout for metal (if you really want to try to get a clean sound from it). Although I guess that's a little like like giving a hog a shower. :)
Oooops!! I use Reaper as my DAW, and when I track whatever I am doing...it sounds as if I am playing in a tunnel. Thanks for your help in advance...and I subbed you also. Keep Rawkin'.
Another searin and scorching video by Steve!! Love the sound, tone and the sustain is unreal! The Black Sabbath touch is remarkable! Great vid!!!
Thanks! I think they sound great, too. So hot and responsive, very nice. I think it's all a function of how far you sit from the TV. I love how every note chimes thru even with the hi gain. Scorching yet musical.

I use the bridge pickup like 90% of the time. The neck is used more for some certain lead sounds and when I'm using a clean sound.

Absolutely perfect for rocking out on.
When is the superbowl on?
I don't live in America.
Nice demo. Nice sound, Fantastic pickups set. Nice guitars collection behind your left arm :-)

Ah, feelin' the Randy today! I'd love to see you dive into one of his tunes in-depth. Something other than the obvious Crazy Train.
That's probably my favorite Ted tune. It's just got the greatest rock feel. I'll see if there are any else up here on RUclips. That will be a good indicator as to whether they're blocking covers of it (like they do for a lot of Zep tunes).
Very cool video. Question: Is the TH2 going direct or are we hearing what you're playing through monitors because it sounds really good.
Dang those are some hot pickups dude - loving your reviews of everything. Greetz from BC,Canada
Loving this video as I do all of your others. Just fun stuff to watch. I have to ask though.

I thought about it, but the hole left over always annoys me. And with the light finish, it seems to stand out more than a dark or sunburst finish.

Nice video Steve love the sound of those pup's
Hey Pixxy, could you do a crazy train cover and also a skid row 18 and life cover? Thanks man, you are awesome. Also, i keep asking if you have any old vids or audio of your old band, would love to hear it.
Hey Steve, how bout doing an in-depth video on your red Les Paul standard replica? I'm pretty sure that one hasn't got a specific video on it yet.
lol yes thats what is so great about the band!!! lol how they come up with all those progressions and not to mention odd time signatures which is another great reason why they are so great!!!
Thanks! I'm just outside of Boston, so we're in the general area. Got some flakes falling out there right now. Like they say, if you don't like the weather in New England, wait a minute. hehe...

I see.. i am thinking about putting in the same as u have in this guitar.. in my Les Paul standard.. now i have those new Burstbuckers pro.. with 4x push pull pots,...
are you using the noisegate as well....Im not understaning why I have a lot of Noise.. .the noise gate does not alow for sustain.
So how are you running your guitar through the PC? I downloaded TH2 because you use it a lot and IT sounds amazing but I am missing whatever you are using to run your guitar through the PC. Also what speakers are you running it through?

Thanks! I try to make it like casually hanging out and talking guitars, and make it humorous. That seems to be a winning combination.
any chance you can show us the tone of peavey? Nice vid bdw rock on!
Is it me or is the audio a bit dull this time?
Hi Steve, could you let me know what you connect your instruments to to connect to your laptop, to run TH2? ie, are you using a "Zoom pedal" via USB or?
thanks a ton. cheers.
Mark :)
Hey Pixxy,
Love the Blackouts and TH2
AMAZING TONE!!
Take Care
I've tried it and it didn't sound very good. I'll try again with a different mic and see how it sounds. Plus, I mostly record late at night, when I can't turn an amp on. That's why I use the software. It sounds good and it's completely silent (only in my headphones and run directly into the camera).
Hey steve, I know this is off topic but, can i use the digitec rp350 foot pedal for the guitar rig 5? There is one for sale cheap here and i have the guitar rig software but no way to hook my guitar to my computer. Thanks.
as long as al frankin continues to play guitar and post videos I will continue to watch an d rock n roll
Are those Blackouts better/hotter than EMG 81/85 u think.. ?
Your weather sounds like mine, where you at? Im in WV.
crazy train nice! have you seen wewantmoreglam's video on the aged rhoads LP Custom? its awesome
Thanks!
oh, did you upgrade the Chinese bridge to something else?

HA! No, my distraction in this video was my cat, Mr. McFuzzlebutt. With the cold weather he's inside a lot more and apparently bored.
Maybe it's just me but your toggle switch seems noisy. Is that the stock "import" switch?
hey pixxy how many branded replica les pauls do you have?
Do you Get any 60 cycle hum wit hthe TH2 and have to use the Noise gate? ..That Noisegate is touchy LOL
I just watched it. That's one awesome guitar. A little pricey for me, but definitely a killer axe.
How are you makking this Video and having the audio from Th2?
another question what are your favorite strings and size lol
AWSOME!!!! Could please you do Fool for your Lovin' by Whitesnake???
It's surprisingly different than I thought it was. lol I used to play the straight chords and not the more complex variations. It makes a huge difference. Leave it to RUSH to use a minor11 chord. haha
Yes.... I started playing drums on my table when you played Limelight
What's the riff at 12:20 it sounds farmiliar!
I love watching your vids dude and your so lucky you get too play badass guitars and your guitar does look like Randy's lol
Thanks! I'll take a look when I have a chance. If I can revive it I'll put it upstairs in the kid's playroom.
i'll try to find that audio, thanks!
Try to take the pickguard out. I think make the guitar looks much nicer. And always love your videos. Keep on rocking man.
Steve - you might try playing with (i.e. lowering) the pickup height on the Blackout for metal (if you really want to try to get a clean sound from it). Although I guess that's a little like like giving a hog a shower. :)
I don't think I know that one. I only know a few of Dokken's early songs. George Lynch was too scary, hence the name "Mr. Scary." hehe...
Oooops!! I use Reaper as my DAW, and when I track whatever I am doing...it sounds as if I am playing in a tunnel. Thanks for your help in advance...and I subbed you also. Keep Rawkin'.
What type of picks do you use?
