- A closer look at the issues with my cheap 1998 Mercedes Benz S210 E240. It has 441,000km on it and of course rust.. lots of it!

"I've got a thing for end of life vehicles..." Got me right in the feels.
The part where you name the mercedes model and the meme integrated is pure gold. Keep it up!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
The fun fact is in Berlin there are some of them still used as Taxis, and the W211 especially, same here in Croatia, Alot of W211 used as taxis(facelift W211s) and some W210S, unbreakable and solid as a tank :D
As an owner of an old w210, I can give you the advise to change the balljoints… they rust from inside out and break. I once lost a wheel on my E300 Diesel. Parts are very cheap and most of the rust is just ugly.
Thanks for the tip, someone else warned me about that in the previous video as well so I decided to replace one of them that wasn't looking amazing, can't take any chances with something like that can you
A while back I read an article about the W210 titled "The worst Mercedes ever built".
I vividly remember a passage stating "As soon as there's one warning light on the dash, just scrap it, it won't get better after that" xD
To be a little positive; they are really nice tires!
Many thanks Sledge for another very good video. To encourage you the merc has loads of potential - good engine, good underneath, good tyres, comfort, loads of space and usefulness/ carrying capacity and you have the skills to do jobs on it and treat the rust on the body. Miss Involvo'd liked it when she first saw it !! Hopefully it will get through the inspection when ready for it. Best regards.
Thanks, I appreciate it 👍
Looks like a nice car to fix up,if it doesn't cost too much. Looking forward to more of this 👌🏼😃
My thoughts exactly!
ROY’s a keeper!
We decided to change the license plate as we need to re-register it, it's a bit of a silly one, I'll show you in a future video 😄
If that was in a cornfield in South Minnessota, Derek would be proud. A few ankle vents and factory weight reduction…. Nah she’s fine. Add the 10 foot paint job and she’s a going to town rig, and I ain’t kidding ya!
Something oddly appealing about the old girl and I feel sorry for her and definitely think you should preserve the patina. Great video as always fella
Thanks Richie! I say to the missus it looks like something Derek would drag out of a field 😄
Amazing how smooth the engine still runs for 400k km. I once had a Passat with a 1.4 TSI engine, sold it with 203.000 km and it rattled and ticked like crazy.
Yeah it's so smooth! These things go on and on from what I heard
"I don't know what's happened here. It's not looking good"
Truer words have yet to be spoken
LOL
Apart the rust, those are peak Merc's. Specially with the M119 V8.
You will start to love it. Check hinges on bonnet, They should have a clip to release and allow bonnet to open ninety degrees. Also it has Self Leveling Suspense. Struts instead of Shock absorbers. If no obvious leaks and reservoir has 10 grade Hydraulic oil. When engine is going it should firm up. If not most likely the bladders in Accumulators have leaked the Nitrogen Gas out. Plenty of Info on SLS on Internet. Struts are the only thing that are difficult to find replacements.
To be honest I already am! You were right about the accumulators, I'm glad it wasn't a strut as they are readily available here but at over €300 a pop!
@@Involvod Not in Australia , even though they were an optional extra on saloons. Refurbished ones over a $1000:dollars. Disconnect Accumulator and with a pencil with the eraser on the end pock through, should feel resistant from bladder skin. If not there I has been a leak. They are fairly hardy. As my two 45 year old W123 still work.
Rusty old cars are rusty old cars! always enjoy learning from you! we are an inclusive community! ahahah we do not discriminate against other 240's
Sounds criminal to say but it's actually nice having something other than a volvo on the channel🤣might be a bit biased as i grew up with mercs in the family but as volvo owner i'm getting the best of both worlds from this channel!
Glad to hear it! 😄
That's one snazzy thumbnail!👍
Thanks 😄 I can't take credit for it, I actually outsourced to it to a designer in Russia and I love it
If anyone can save her you can Sledge.
It appears you are about to polish a turd 😂. Looking forward to further adventures 🙂
Does not look too bad, wheel arches, fenders and so on are more cosmetic than anything else. When all the structural areas are OK to me the car is worth saving. I wish you succes with getting it back on the road in good nick!
Exactly! I've treated the rust on them but I'll keep an eye open for replacement panels too
Know you'll do a great job with this!
Thanks!
The amount of rust truly is astonishing. 😅
No, that is pretty much plausible. Merc wanted to cheap out and used water based paint instead of the good stuff.
You have the dedication and skills to resurrect her but I hope nothing turns her into a money pit.
Thanks! Me too
Its a great wagon, these old girls need love too
Cant wait to see progress on this car.
Me too!
cant wait to see this car back as it should be !
I'll have a good go 😄
@@Involvod as a two time restorer of w202 owner and exactly same spots of rust as your benz, once you are done with it, you can't take your eyes from them :) check DEWALT DWE6423-QS Sander, best value for money thing which I've ever bought for this kind of jobs, once sanding is done, rust converter-primer-color-lacquer, you are good to go :) DIY bodywork is not difficult as many think.
Honestly now that you’ve shown a little more of it, other than the outward rust, this isn’t so bad. You have a serviceable machine here.
Make sure you open the rear hatch up and treat the rust from the inside or it will start to leak around the glass. I used my POR method and some rubberized under coat to fix the perforation I had under my read glass. A small pin hole there will flood your “sub machine gun” compartment when it rains.
As an fyi, to avoid banging your head on the grille, the hoods on Mercedes open up to a full 90*, that is, straight vertical. Makes service much easier.
I did have faith in this car from the moment I looked underneath it, sometimes you just know it won't be "that bad" even though there's always more rust waiting to catch you out 😅 Thanks for the tips!
Subscribed to see what you will do. I have the exact same car same colour with 220K but the gearbox is proving difficult to fix.
Thanks, I appreciate it! Is that the manual gearbox you have?
Nice coin trick
It got nice tyres ! 😂
Oh no! 😅
Underneath lot's of surface rust but treated will be a good car. I would tidy it up and do fixes that are needed to get test. Can then if you wanted get better wings and tailgate and swop over. I'm enjoying a change with the Merc.
Thanks, I think that's the best plan!
Well, 25 years old and 450.000KM, it's been a good car for someone i bet.
Niemiec płakał jak sprzedawał...
I wonder if the arches are so bad as they had those naff chrome trims on at one stage? Underneath looks very good. Keep the rusty look on the outside, looks like 'battle damage' 🙂
I'm not sure, I don't know if the "Classic" had them, might have been the Elegance model. My thoughts exactly, I've left a couple of spots but done the doors and arches to avoid another TÜV disaster 😅
Nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes!😮😮😮
The w210 rust so bad thanks to the water based paint. The M112 2.4 V6 is a lovely engine though.
Yeah it's lovely!
While Mercedes are a status symbol of Wealth, they're replacement parts are overly expensive and hard to find. Additionally getting technical information on repairs are far from easy. Think of them like owning a boat, you're going to be pouring money into them. Sell it and stick with easy to fix Volvo redblock.
You know you can allways change the unbolt bits. And if you need something which looks horribly expensive, check out places like Hungary, Chech repuplic. We ( Hungary) have lots of good places where you can get expensive stuff repaired. If you need some help, give me a shout!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
The wagon is actually called "S210" i have a very rusty w210 facelift aswell and it has about 563k km. Previous taxi, only been driving around the area i live for about 12 years and ive been seeing it since 2019 so its kind of a piece of history! its rusted out too even worse than yours i believe! good luck!
My plan is to put an AMG bodykit on it and source a E320 CDI partscar, mine is a e220 cdi.
I have a e240 preface too same engine but with amg package. Amazing engine!
That's awesome! They made such great engines that go on and on
Love watching your videos I hope u sort this car as they are really good cars easy new wings new bootlid sorted good clean it be goodi make it look good I hope u doge self leveling suspension
Thanks 👍
Great cars get a Sean Treacy stage 2 remap on it 😅
Funnily enough I've just bought a V70 TDi in the same colour as your Mercedes. I do really like these but they're not that common here (the UK) anymore :(
Congrats on the (more sensible) purchase! It's easy to see why there are hardly any left over there 😄
If it's bouncy it's most likely the struts. When the spheres fail it lifts itself and you'd have very harsh ride.
Actually the rear struts don’t have damping in them, they are purely hydraulic rams. So they, in and of themselves, can’t cause a bouncy ride. What happens is when the diaphragm in the sphere bursts the nitrogen charge mixes with the fluid causing it to become aerated. Since gasses compress it causes a very bouncy ride with the aerated fluid in the system. Over time the gas is allowed to vent out of the system and then you are left with an extremely hard ride as there is nothing left in the system but fluid, which of course doesn’t compress.
Sledge, that rust needs to be treated otherwise it'll only get worse. I don't buy into the "patina" thing. This W210 is from the era of rusty Mercs. If you act quickly enough you will catch it just in time. I'm looking forward to future Merc videos (I still like the Volvo content too).
Old Mercs are cool but this one is too far gone I think. I wouldn't have bothered with it and wouldv'e gone for a 940/850 or V70 Classic. Comparable reliablity but built to a better standard.
When did mercedes go from a tank that would go forever to a rust bucket that dissolves in the rain with a saggy headlining like an old rover montego
It's saying something when the headlining in my Volvo 740 is tighter than in the E Class! 😂
@@Involvod 740's were good compared to 940's that sagged also the door panels covering shrank up and went wrinkled
new channel coming, "Imerced"
😄 I thought about it, but it takes so much effort to build up a channel 🥴
Damn, mine's not even that rusted out generally and your tailgate still opens, my tailgate doesn't open from the outside, the handle is loose it's rusted out
Long time no speak mate, sorry I been a bit busy. Just changing a 140 auto box for a manual. Finally got my old 244 sorted and found a wide front grill. Just need to paint it all up!
So how does the Mercedes compare to the Volvo? 1998 is still young ;P hahaa it's more rusty than my old banger!
Nice! I'll let you know how it compares when I can drive it a bit more, at the moment it's always on axle stands 😅
Keep the tires...
It's sad how rusty W210s can get; a V70 of the same year and kilometres would very likely be more or less devoid of rust.
Having said that, the important front suspension bits look sound enough, so it's probably worth taking to 500,000km.
That's what I'm thinking!
Are you gonna remove the rust completely? It would be nice to see how you make it… Good buy anyway, hope you have paid not so much for it… Good luck with the Benz
As most of the panels can be replaced I've tried a product that I know can work "owatrol" and painted over it. Hopefully it lasts a bit but we'll find out.
Underneath either that or Fluid Film to control the rust. I'm not a huge fan of rust converters as I've had rust come back through before long
@@Involvod I‘m not a fan from rust converters too and actually the best solution is to physically remove the rust completely before painting it, but it can be really much work in this case I suppose…
I don´t think you should worry too much over the rear hydraulic suspension. Note that I only worked (a lot) on old Citroëns and not Mercedes. But I do remember seeing a Mercedes hydraulic system and Citroën logic can be applied. You basically have a gas sphere or "accumulator" on each wheel. These need to have gas in them otherwise you try to compress the oil which is impossible.
It´s normal for spheres to loose the gas on a molecular lever through the rubber membrane. When stiff = replace spheres. Or "accumulators" as Merc people tend to call them. The important bit is to know that it´s really no rocket science. Search for some videos on replacing gas spheres on Citroën and Mercedes. Or let me put it this way. It´s ten times more difficult to replace the suspension on a Volvo 240 than doing it on a hydraulic Citroën. So all we need to hope for is that Mercedes isn´t way more stupid than Citroën.
Thanks, that makes sense!
@@Involvod The spheres are not that expensive either, and replacing those fixed the bouncy ride on my wagon. I think I paid about $200USD for the pair.
@@SilverArrowAutomotive thanks! I subscribed to your channel too, thanks for the DIY videos!
@@Involvod Thank you! I'm planning on making more of them as I go along.
My Suggestion :... stay by Volvo, Mercedes it's really not the yellow from the egg (-:
If that Mercedes Benz runs , you can fix the car little by little
Are you still planning on buying a V70 for Miss Involvo'd?
Definitely could still happen! They're quite expensive around these parts, 20 year old high milers with failing transmissions that people still want €1500 for, they've definitely held their value 😄
The wiseness of this purchase depends a lot on how much you paid for the car.
it is te shame that the w210 rust so much but the 300 turbo diesel engines are the best
1. It's a S210, not a W210
Nothing more expensive than a cheap mercedes.
You always seem to be very worried or sad - i don't understand that, because you tend to do what you like, you own a some nice cars, and your wife is as sweet as a nut! Cheer up mate - we like what you do!
👍
it's the wrong kind of 240 :)
its nice, except for the entire car lol
I thought you lived in Germany, not Armenia.
That's where this car is off to next if it acts up
@@Involvod then it needs to be stunning from 5 meters away, but utterly fucked underneath, that's what they like.
A sideways thumb on this.....!
Sorry man. I’m gonna have to unsub. No thanks.
Why, 😮 oh why did you guys decide on this RMS Titanic 😱
I guess we are getting a lot of videos on how to fix W210s from now on 🫣🤗🤗
