@@leotrejo9817 I don't recall Travis Bickle being an opera nut. He appreciated dirty movies (much to Betsy's chagrin) but never cried to the sounds of them while working out.
That scene where Davola is bench-pressing and weeping with exaggerated sobs right after the scene where Elaine tells Jerry how interesting and well-balanced he is is gold.
Kudos to Julia for making the scene funny, because if you take her performance away (you can leave the lines exacly the same) this looks straight out from a horror movie.
It's just 'Seinfeld' but I still get the shivers watching this scene...scary. Also, the whole hunting in your big bag for a pepper spray or some sort of defence when you need it the most is so relatable!
Dating can be terrifying - and this episode proves it. Although Elaine's responses are humorous, her beau Joey is very 'Norman Batesy'. Notice the 'showering' reference...*shudder*
I think if I was just talking to new person and when I stopped by their apartment, I noticed the door wide open and then a wall full of pictures of me, I don’t think I’d walk in to take a closer look.
Rest in peace Peter Crombie. Your few minutes of airtime in Seinfeld left a long lasting legacy. One really knows that something has snapped inside his head when he started calling Elaine Nedda, Pagliacci’s wife.
"I'm a dayyy per-sonn..." I remember seeing this for the first time. I absolutely cracked up with laughter & wonderment at the same time. Julia was SO good in Seinfeld & this was one of those special moments that she did so well, just SO funny & with those little individualistic mannerisms & expressions that she puts in, unlike any other comedy actress l can think of & that's because that's just herself coming through Elaine. I can't really pick a favourite character, they were all great in their own ways but Elaine was RIGHT up there.
what an actress julia is. she was the top contributor to this sitcom's success i think. i dont think any other actress could be so naturally and brilliantly funny like julia was.
Peter Crombie does such a good job here going through a range of emotions - confidence, disillusionment, then rage - in an understated (and creepy!) way. RIP.
It's like a scene from a thriller movie. First time I saw this episode I was so happy when Elaine was able to escape from this twisted guy (thank goodness for Cherry Binaca breath spray, LOL).
Despite being a parody, this was actually very creepy and uncomfortable. It’s unusual for Seinfeld to take that angle. I think they didn’t expect this guy to be so good at being a psycho.
The creepiness of the whole scene and then right after you hear the Seinfeld theme music 😂 for some reason it cracks me up how it switches from creepy mood to a happy quirky jingle lol
I think in any other context, this is very scary. The dead pan delivery, the fear in Elaine’s voice and the infatuation bordering on unhealthy obsession. Very creepy.
People talk about how George's acting was the best on the show, but Elaine totally makes this scene by somehow managing to be funny. And of course Peter Crombie was completely scary. If you watch this out of context of the show, it's pretty horrifying. But - this is one of my favorite episodes, too.
Supposedly, Peter Crombie (the actor playing Joe Davola) couldn't take any of Larry David's nastiness and sarcasm and beat the crap out of him before filming one day. He was a great actor, but the incident got him blacklisted.
Whoa, that's a big leap on your part. The therapist definitely loves Elaine (they did go to Europe together) but there is no reason to believe he wants her dead now. He probably just hopes to win her back.

The episode is called “The Opera", it’s from the fourth season, and it aired in November 1992. “My Heart Will Go On” would not be written or recorded by Celine Dion for another five years! The song and the film “Titanic” were released in November 1997.
Gotta love Elaine 😅 Physically overpowering Davola or calling the police was out of the question so she hit him in the right spot with the right thing💥
This episode was truly disturbing. I mean it's supposed to be a sitcom, and all of a sudden you're watching a horror movie. The red dot episode was equally disturbing (with the ultimate werewolf himself: David Naughton). The difference is that the red dot episode had a happy ending. This episode with "Crazy Joe Divola" hadn't.
Damn scary scene! Surprised to see such a scene in Seinfeld. Julia what stunning screen presence and acting to actually make an outright creepy scene quite engaging and funny in moments.
If this episode aired today there would be a disclaimer before and after the show. If this happened irl dude would get a visit from NYPD, be admitted to Bellevue for a 72 hour psychiatric hold, a restraining order would be filed, and mandatory therapy would be part of his release. OH! Plus medication. 30 years ago he would just be left alone. No one would visit him anymore and there would be whispers about his behavior. See how times have changed?!
R.I.P. Peter Crombie (1952-2024)
