Ladies and Gentlemen, there will NEVER be a group like this again. Johnny, Ed, and Doc were masters. I watch these and feel sad that no one will ever top this.
How do you know when a band of musicians are the best at what they do? When they 1) mess something up yet keep going like nothing happened, and 2) can reproduce that screw up EXACTLY as it happened before. Johnny's reaction at 1:14 is classic Carson.
After working all day, and getting dinner, household chores, paying bills, putting the kids to bed . . . we looked forward to the light hearted banter of the Tonight Show. Yes, those were very enjoyable nights that tended to relax us before we went to sleep. I no longer tune in to late night TV. I go to sleep listening to old time radio archives; radio programs from the forties & fifties mostly: Nero Wolfe series, Philip Marlowe, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, The Lone Ranger, Fibber McGee, and many more.
I think they started on a downbeat instead of the usual first bright note timed with the snare drum. It sounded like a stumble, but can barely catch it. They don't repeat it the same when he asks them to do it a second time. Funny, though.
@@fwbenson57 Paul Anka actually wrote it and as a nod to Johnny, asked him to provide lyrics. Skitch Henderson was upset that the theme was written by a 20 yr old Anka, but couldn't complain when Johnny Carson was credited as a co-writer
Those were the good old days of comedy without all the partisan politics. Boy do I miss Johnny Carson, no one is close today not by a mile. Jay Leno was good in his own way too. I never watch late night shows anymore.
@0:53 -- The first four bars. So we go back to the beginning of the video, to hear what Johnny was talking about -- and the first four bars are missing, because our host started the video late, after the first four bars were played. The show was fantastic. But I can't let that sway my judgement for what our host did, by cutting out the first four bars. Thumb's down click earned.

This is what made Johnny Carson's show so great. The way he handled the blooper with Doc's band is priceless!!

Doc was the best...
They . . . They were able to re-create their fuck up.. That's a bunch of real musicians.
That is weird and wild stuff... I did not know that!
😂😂😂
Yuh-huh.
Thanks so much for this. I was watching the night this happened and it has stuck with me ever since!

When TV had CLASS.
I guess that's why it's called CLASSIC TV.
Look up the definition for “cool” and you’ll find a pic of Doc.
I didn’t see a pic of anyone

When Carson was King....
this is well over the 6000th time they've played it . This comment section is a testament to music education being dead and gone for decades .
Those cats made millions not giving a fk.. holding everything in contempt and good humor
Carson overheard them messing up the theme.
Good ear.
I believe he Co-wrote the theme, so yeah he would have heard a gaffe.
@@fwbenson57 I don't recall any information regarding Johnny co writing the theme but you very may well be correct.
It was the drummer in him.
Stone Hobson Excellent point!!

Where's the beginning of the theme though, the video starts just after the part he's talking about?Would love to hear the band 'mess up' in real time.
Yeah, a lousy 15 more seconds would have done it.
he probably pressed the record button on
the VCR 15 seconds too late....
Plus Johnny himself asks "Did you hear the 1st 4 bars of the theme tonight?", which indicates he's aware others may not have noticed!
Johnny was a good drummer and had a great taste in music. He loved jazz which is a major plus in my opinion.
Late night now has got nothing. Nothing!
It was Tommy Newsome’s fault!
It’s always Tommy’s fault !
Tampa
I think it boils down to is the band had a few belts in the studio lounge for whatever occaision before doing the show intro..Robert at 66.
a few belts and a premium wax-infused pre-roll or two
I thought it was all rehearsed. 🙂
Folks, this was yet another setup. They deliberately messed it up in order to have a point of entry into the monologue that night.

I’m in bed by 9 !
Byron Allen wasng to bad
...Ya..Tommy Neusome's fault- ('Mr. excitement') LOL!! Robert at 67.
Meanwhile whoever posted this didnt even put in the theme from the beginning .. not even Ed's announcing.
Lol
Should have played it backwards.
so that what happen lol
Pro's. Plain and simple.

Don’t any of you understand this was planned? There’s no way the band would play the theme incorrectly. They just thought it would make a good bit.
The night shows are a JOKE....Political and crude...!
Where is the screw up? It's not even in this video. waste of time.
