Heads up! I began experiencing medial knee pain that most likely was the result of a overuse or a degenerative meniscus condition. I'm a runner and decided to have it checked out in case it was something serious, but my knee x ray was normal. The orthopedist did some tests, suggested an MRI and immediately recommended surgery if there was any indication of a meniscus tear. My bullshit alarm went off right away which prompted me to go with a rigorous physical therapy approach instead, and I'm glad I did. I'm back to normal as the result of conditioning stability muscles that were neglected. Avoid surgery for degenerative knee conditions if at all possible and commission a reputable physical therapist, but you have to be committed and do the rehab routines everyday! Motor on through the pain and it will pay off.

What kind of physical therapy did you do? I’m 61 with some discomfort in my medial meniscus… on and off. It’s a pain in the A*+. But I feel that it’s not a major tear. I usually just apply pressure on it and run for a few minutes and it goes away temporarily. Just wondering what else I can do myself in terms of self therapy. Thanks.

@@pete9688 Do them 3 to 4 times a week, at least two sets of 10 reps each! Your knee might feel like it's getting worse initially but you need to grind through it. Results will come after about three months. For wall sits, try to build up to 90 seconds....two or three sets.

Mine tore when standing up from a chair. 22 sessions of physical therapy later, it was healthier than it had been in years. But I said, "I plan to go skiing and I'm fine to pay more" and my prescription covered it tho the insurance would not. So we went to 34 sessions. I was back in 30's athletic shape at that point. All from physical therapy.

Hello Dr Brett I fell down and hit my right knee at work, according to them it was a meniscus tear and it will heal on its own, they gave medicine for inflammation and pain after that physical therapy I did maybe 4 or 5 sessions but it seems like I didn't had much improvement, I contacted back and explained that I been having pain when I'm on my feet all day, I don't have strength on my knee I have to wear a knee brace to be able to make it throughout my day at work. But they didn't approved any further medical treatment, this was through my job workers comp. I just need some relief with this pain.

I injured my meniscus moving furniture while pushing with my knee. Whatever happened in my knee it caused my kneecap to move out of place and I had a lot of swelling..over a year later and I still have swelling. I had my doctor do surgery on it and he said that the cartilage has worn off part of my kneecap. He said all he did in the surgery was irrigate my knee and put cortisone in it. He didn't do anything to my meniscus. This injury happened over a year ago and it is no better than the day it happened. My doctor told me Im looking at a knee replacement in a couple of years. Its frustrating to me that this injury has turned into this situation. I can't help thinking this doctor could have done more. He had me going to physical therapy and doing things I shouldn't have been doing at the time and I feel this led to the cartilage wearing away. My knee stays full of fluid. Hes drained it 3 times.

I put ice on it and it took months for my kneecap to pop back into position..it does hurt if I overdo..and mostly when sitting for long periods of time and getting up..at times my knee swells on the outside but the pain is behind and down my calf and on the inside of my knee..at times it pops like the bone is out of place ..and the pain subsides..

The medial aspect of my right knee seems to pop out of joint, and there is an audible "pop" when my knee goes back into joint. When it pops out, it sort of locks my knee in a painful position. It is getting worse. I was helping my neighbor change a tire on a full size pickup truck. The tire hit me on the side of my knee, as I was taking it off of the vehicle. What do this think are the chances of this healing itself?

I have the same issue but I hurt mine playing around at wrestling practice in high school. It will get stuck from time to time while in a bent or dynamic position and Is very hard to get the knee back into its proper place. Hurts like hell, well I’ve had two arthroscopic surgeries and they didn’t help that symptom at all. I love grappling to this day but have gotten away from it because I never know when my knee will slip out. It’s been 12 years since my initial injury and today while stretching I felt it try to slide out and caught it before it did. Good luck, you will learn to work around it.

I had a sport injury "treated" when I was 19 yrs old. I had a discoid meniscus resectioned, the result was abysmal. I always take the trouble to ask people who have had knee surgery what they think of it. The results are not good. Knee surgery is an extraodinarly high risk endevour, you are walking into a snake pit when you walk into a knee surgeons office

Hello Dr, I am 30yrs old and having grade 3 posterior horn of medial meniscus tear on my MRI, will it be fixed without surgery? I don't have any pain but when I bend my leg full while sitting then it gets locked.

I have an auto shop w/my husband and I am the helper 😊 I do the office work, but I also help the guys w/the cars and clean up the place. Unfortunately I also have had a seizure problem for the past 20 yrs. For about 6 months, my left leg has been feeling weak, numb, and tingly but especially when I take a shower. Too hot of water makes it feel like my knee is going to collapse! It also gets swollen! Is that arthritis?

I had scoliosis surgery so an MRI isn’t possible. Can a CT Scan be done? I’ve had 4 knee surgeries (all scoped) many many years ago. Unfortunately my surgeon retired. He was so amazing! I should have quit gymnastics and I wouldn’t have kept injuring myself. I’m kind of stubborn that way. Oops.

My girlfriend builds up scare tissue rather quickly, is there a way to heal from a tear without surgery? The last surgery she got her knee froze up and won’t go past a 90° angle even with physical therapy daily.

We re in August 2021 , in March 2021 I hit my knee against one of those metal towing hitch coming out of the front bumper of a Rav 4 It did hurt at first but I thought it's all good I m still standing, 2 days later I had a physical activity planned before going I thought my knee is not 100% but I can still do it, long story short I ended up with a sprained ankle. My doctor later told me there s a possibility that your meniscus is torn until this day I m not walking the same way I used to , its a terrible feeling I hear a pop everytime I bend my knee going to see a physio I might need a surgery though
