@Small Boi Gaming standard top fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars run 7000-8000 horsepower, using mixture of kerosine and nitromethane. The fuel (basically aviation mixed with rocket fuel) is so corrosive the mechanics need to wear breathing apparatus and goggles to refuel. It's also part of the reason engines last no more than 3 runs at top level (and that's hopeful as 2 is the norm) and requires complete strip down every run as a matter of safety. The slingshot effect is what the sport is about as runs are measured by reaction time and overall time. Top fuel cars will often hit 250mph+ (some will hit 300mph) within a quarter mile. General build is tubular aluminium and fibreglass weighing as little as half a ton all in (power to weight in the reigon of over 13000hp per ton) for dragsters and a little heavier for funny cars (10000+ bhp per ton). The only other land based contraptions more viscious under accelleration are rocket sleds (even lsr cars are a more gentle experience than dragsters)

Driving one from a standing start is compared with sitting in your car at the lights, then being hit from behind by a massive truck doing 150mph, which doesn't slow down but accelerates after hitting you. Absolutely insane.

Top Fuel Dragsters are synonymous with the word "thunder" because when they pass by your vicinity during a race, the ground literally shakes below you like thunder. All of that energy produced from the engine (thousands of horsepower) has to go somewhere, in a world of thunder.

I've only been once to any drag race and didn't really know what to expect (someone else took me along) but it turned out to be about as classic as it could get. 1977, Cayuga, Ontario, Canada. Shirley Muldowney was running her pink rail. She was sitting on top that year - NHRA Winston world points championship, becoming the first woman to claim drag racing's most prestigious title. Three NHRA titles back to back, etc. etc.
Also a surprise was seeing Linda Vaughn - "Miss Hurst Golden Shifter" You didn't have to be an NHRA fan to be aware of who she was. She knew her job; high heels and tiny hot pants and keep the crowd entertained between runs. She would have been 34 at the time.
ANYWAY, LOL. .. It wasn't the noise so much as the shock wave that went right through me, shaking up my chest as I sat well back in the bleachers.
I do remember Muldowney's ride in that period was 2,500 HP and topped out at 250 MPH in the quarter mile. How far they've come.

Ehhhh not really true but close. Fastest 1/4 mile lap ever set by a funny car was 3.802s by Matt Hagan in 2017. A Bugatti Veyron (not the Supersport) at its top speed (267mph) would hit a 1/4 mile in 3.37s. Still an unbelievably close race for a ~7,000hp difference.

    • @BigBoyXP4014
      @BigBoyXP4014 4 года назад +160

@@MegaDoug1979 You're technically correct, which is the best kind of correct. NHRA shortened the length of Top Fuel and Funny Car races at sanctioned tracks to 1000ft after several brutal and fatal accidents in the modern era. If they ran out the full quarter mile, on a record tying run (which would undoubtedly be beaten by the modern cars today that hit the same and higher speeds in 320ft less distance) the Top Fuel or Funny Car dragster would win from a standing start against a Bugatti Veyron on a 267mph flying start.
Literally, they do not have tires and maybe will never be able to make tires that can handle what modern Top Fuel and Funny Car dragsters could do across a full quarter mile. Conservative estimates put the speeds in the 355-375mph+ range if they still ran them all the way out. No tire manufacturer has been able to make a tire that could still provide the level of grip needed and handle those kinds of speeds on anywhere near a consistent basis (last time I looked into it it's about a 50% failure rate, and that's with hundreds of millions of dollars of funding and untold thousands of man hours of engineering and mathematical work behind it).
They are faster than the laws of physics and human technological progress can accommodate. Oh, and nowadays, they make about 10-12,000HP. Or maybe they have been making that level of power for a decade previous and we simply didn't have a dynamometer that could reliably and accurately measure that level of power and torque without being turned into shrapnel.
You feel the sound in your chest a quarter mile away in the parking lot with grandstands and a mass of humanity separating the two of you. They have to notify local geological survey crews of upcoming events lest they report an active earthquake every time they make a pass. Racing is many things, but as a sheer engineering spectacle, NHRA and IHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car drag races are at the pinnacle. They may not be able to take a corner worth a damn but at the speeds they run you'd black out if you tried.

Funny how Europeans ridicule NHRA and drag racing as "easy straight line" racing but the fact is funny cars need to be steered at 300mph and have 10,000hp.
Their engines are basically hydrolocked for every combustion cycle. Drag Racing is insane. On top of that, the nitro methane burns your eyes and lungs. They shake the ground and they do 300mph+ in 1000 feet, not the 1/4 mile any more. 100mph per 100 meters and then some. Dom Lagana set the world record for fastest 1320 time, or 1/4 mile time. 338mph in 4.4 seconds.

Some people ridicule drag racing, not all. Drag racing has its fans in the UK and Europe, Santa Pod (UK) was (and possibly still is) the location of the fastest 1/4 miles for many many years.
We have a lot more in the way of circuit racing, it's just differing national tastes due to our countries being set up for different things - the US had a lot of straight roads and no stately homes with rich aristocrats setting up circuits. The UK was the other way round. Most of the drag strips in the UK and Europe are former WW2 air-bases as runways are ideal for conversion to drag strips.

Although Drag Racing is not my favorite style, just as you say something I love about this type of competition is the
Engineering, control when running, and some other extreme things that are awesome, Drag Racing deserves more respect around the world

These are what brought me to America! Nothing quite like it anywhere. And the little guy in his garage can build one of these, or at least close to it!

If you have never herd how truly loud these things are, you have to go to see them. I used to live 7 miles away from Santa Pod in the UK and when they had Top Fuel Dragsters on, you could hear them going down the strip, LOUDLY, from 7 miles away. They are amazing and have to be seen to be believed.

If you use the words “utterly” and “implore,” odds are youre gonna stick out like a sore thumb at a drag race.

I live 5 miles from the 4 wide track, Zmax in Concord, NC (Charlotte). When top fuel and funny cars run, they rattle my shop. Often it is a Siren song I can't ignore.

I seen Big Daddy Don Garlits lit them up back in 1987. To be near these funny cars AND top fuel dragsters RUNNING is the stuff of bucket lists.
