  • I keep teasing making a trip out West so in preparation I did have to buy a bear canister. In this case I chose the Bearvault BV500. I go over the simple operation and cover the one question I get most about my backpacks either through Facebook (check out link below) or channel messages. How do bear canisters fit into the Osprey Exos 38 and the Osprey Exos 58? I haven't been able to answer this question till now. The BV500 fits vertically in the 38 but takes up about half the backpack. It does not fit horizontally. At least not without putting more strain on the backpack than I was willing to try. The canister of course fits vertically in the 58 but also fits horizontally at the bottom of the backpack.
    Specs: The BV500 is 700 cubic inches, made of polycarbonate, dimensions are 12.7 x 8.7 inches and it weighs 2lbs. 9 oz (1.16kg).

    Hello.
    Advise what to choose as the versatile backpack. Tourism and travel. Classic in the face of Tatonka Bison; Yukon?
    Or the more modern Osprey Kestrel; Atmos; Xenith?
    In priorities: convenience, reliability, practicality.
    Thank you in advance.
    P.S. I live on the periphery, for this reason, measure, evaluate, compare, unfortunately there is no possibility.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for making this video. I have an Exos 58 and really like it so this video is very helpful for when I have to use a bear canister. I've been looking at this Bearvalt model but dread the 2+ lbs to carry it.

    Do you think the BearVault 500 would fit horizontally inside the Exos 48?? This video answered my question about the Exos 58, so thanks!

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      I don't know for sure since I don't have the 48 BUT I would doubt it. It was so tight in the 38 and had just enough room in the 58.

      Yea, they can be resourceful for sure. I think there was a bear in the Adirondacks who "solved" the bearvault at one time.

    That is my set up! :) I have that bear can and the 58 and as you point out, it's really nice that the bear can fits horizontally. Totally agree with your assessment, it would be nice if the can were a bit lighter, but then cost starts to become a factor. Good combo!

    Been using one of these for a long time. Couple. of points: 1. You were probably just showing fit, but it shouldn't be at the bottom of the pack, because food is heavy. Better to fold tent flat on the bottom, then top it with sleeping bag and pad and then put the canister on top of all that, so that it rides more in the middle of the pack. Second, the 550 is not necessary for trips up to about 5 days. The smaller 450 (9 ounces lighter) holds four days of food easily, and can hold food for five days if you pack it well and are bringing only what you need for about 2500 calories a day. However, worth remembering that you also need to make sure that anything that has a scent (sunscreen, lip balm medicines, toothbrush and paste -- basically, everything in your personals bag) is also sealed in the canister at night. Also, of course, you don't need to keep your first day's food (lunch on trail or dinner) in the canister unless you drop your pack to bag a peak or take a swim, anything that will leave your pack unattended.

    I just got the BV500 for an upcoming JMT hike. Unfortunately, it seems to fit better in the two packs shown in the video than it does in my Osprey AG Atmos 65. It does fit horizontally at the bottom, but very tightly.

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      I saw your post on the JMT facebook group right? Yea, I'm surprised the Atmos wasn't designed with this in mind.

    • @peteraan6306
      @peteraan6306 7 лет назад

      Yes, that was me on the JMT FB group. The "perfect" solution would be a new pack that would carry the BV500 easily, but that's also the most expensive solution. I am exploring some external carry options, or may just try to live with the too-tight fit in the bottom of the Osprey Atmos 65.

    Great review Tim, I've only spent the night once in bear country so far and I thought it was a huge pain in the ass trying to hang my food bag in a tree. The "beer" canister seems like it might be worth the weight, but only if no bears were watching this video...ha!

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      Depends on the bulk and weight of your gear I'd say. Keep in mind that packs have a range of weight that they feel comfortable loaded. I've seen many people use a 48 for a few days with no problem. I use a 38 if I go out for a few days.

  • @thedoghouseoutdoors4116
    @thedoghouseoutdoors4116 7 лет назад

    That's a good looking canister, now do you put gear in it to, or you just going to use it for food only? I had got a bear cache and ended up selling it. Also with your food in there, will you still have to string it up in a tree or it would be cool left on the ground?

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      Food, utensils and toiletries only. It's left on the ground at least 100 yards from your camp.

  • @HikingWithShawn
    @HikingWithShawn 7 лет назад

    Unless traveling where bears are present, this is an item of gear I will never need. I think that is sad, too! Our forest is all second-growth which means pre-NEW DEAL era, it was all agricultural land, the previous ancient forests all long gone due to timber needs. Bears haven't officially been present in my area since the late 1800s. FS and DNR wants to back but only naturally, not implanted. I'd love to see bears return, that might be crazy of me to say haha. Great video though nonetheless!

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors

    It's nice when an item you pack can do two jobs and the Bear Vault is such an item..... It makes a good ( improvised ) seat when in camp. The clear sides are an advantage by being able to see in the canister.
    Not sure about this ...... I read that in a park out west one of the bears figured out how to open them. Truth or fiction , your guess is as good as mine.
    I have the BV450 Solo and really like it. It's used to stop Racoons from raiding my food supply. They are especially a real pain in the Everglades or the Okefenokee Swamp.

    I use an ursack, but have been eyeing up a bearvault canister, since I'm always worried about smaller critters sneaking into the opening somehow. Two pounds is hard to swallow when the ursack only weighs 8oz. How did you decide on the 500 vs the smaller 400? -- one way I've seen people carry the canister with smaller packs is to still use a food bag. Take the food out of the canister during the day, with the food in the pack body and the canister snugged under the top lid, only storing the food in the canister at night.

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      The 450 is plenty for one person for a few days. Both Joshes have them. I'm long term goal planning to do 7-10 days without resupplying and no bear boxes which is why I got the 500, decided to eat the small weight penalty.

    If I'm in bear country that has plenty of trees I don't worry about taking a bear canister. I hang food in such places. One of my pals took a bear canister into Katmai and Denali and just had to find places in the alders or in the rocks to stash the canister at night.
    And in some places you are required to have your food in a bear canister. No bear bags allowed.
    Yours looks like a good model if I ever find myself in an area where I will be forced to take one. Not sure if it would fit horizontally in my Deuter pack, but I think it should.

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors

    hey that second pack I like. how much are them. I'm making a get home bag kinda but more bug out bag. I like the back packs pockets all that. but I need more space to add stuff like few clothes maybe pair shoes or my sandles being I can were shoes if it come to it I would have to but have my sandle so I could were a while and my feet not hurt. but also I've busted my back. so I havent tried carrying up to 60 pounds in my back to see if it hurts. so I'm gonna make me a pack but keep a small dolly light weight one I've got one that I'll have to modify probably tires. but I need a pack kinda like you'res and I'll give my daughter my back pack style bag. thanks for video ide love to get that canister but can't afford one right now I need the bag first. thanks god bless.

      The 58? I got mine for under 200 but they're 220 at some places. I'd wait for a sale or a coupon. They're nice packs but can't do 60 pounds comfortably. It's made for more lightweight gear.

    Nice review. Unfortunately I often go to the Adirondacks, and the bears there have been known to rip through the plastic and get into the canister. There was once a mother bear who was able to open the lid, and she passed that skill on to her cubs. I believe her and other bears are the reason there's now 2 clicks to lock the lid. Although this canister meets the regulations for a bear canister, the park recommends something like the Garcia Cache. Which is what I use in my Exos 48

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      I think the bear was "yellow-yellow" or something like that. I read quite a bit about that before I bought this. It was good reading.

  • @potatothorn

    EXCITED that you got a can, means you will end up out here soon... Roxana and I use this same can. For the two of us it is fine for 2 nights, could easily condense stuff and make it work for 3 or more - that's for 2 people... Comic note.. it works against Ravens very well, but the shiny can sometimes attracts them. Easy enough to open once you get the hang of it. heavy but that's unavoidable. CANS SAVE BEARS. The less human food they get the better off they are. A very few very smart bears have occasionally figured out how to open cans but well, this is a quote from a study cited on REI // "We tracked a learning curve in how bears deal with canisters. At first, bears would spend an hour trying to break one open. Over time, it got down to 30 minutes, then 15. It grew more common that if a bear glances at a campsite and sees a canister, it's going to just keep moving. That's encouraging." McCurdy

      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад +1

      That is an encouraging result. Not quite soon yet but I'll share my overall goal with you and anyone else who sees this comment. I want to do the JMT in 2018 if I can work out the logistics with child care, permits, etc. etc. I'm excited but reading alot and my treks this year will all be shakedowns working my way up to next year!

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut 7 лет назад

      Yosemite requires it or you get fined. There are some other places thoughout the country though even east coast, I believe somewhere in NY. You just leave it on the ground somewhere 100 yards from camp ideally not on the top of any incline. A bear could beat around on it and give up but there's always the chance he knocks it down a hill.

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      Jay answered the questions but yes lots of places out west do require them (Maroon Bells, CO; Yosemite etc.etc.). In the East I'm pretty sure they're required in the Adirondacks in some areas. You leave it on the ground at least 100 yards away from camp.

    • @mikec5182
      @mikec5182 7 лет назад

      Most places in Colorado require them, and I heard rumor most National Parks do now too! We were required to use one in Canyonlands NP last spring, and apart from a lost bear it didn't seem like an area that bears would be. And the cost/weight of the BV is much less than the fine if you get caught out here without one!!

    I used to have the Exos 58, and now Jim at Trails We Hike uses that and we also have a BV500. Great combo. Hate the weight, but some places I go (like Yosemite) require them. I think the Bv500 is the best weight to volume ratio of any of the bear cannisters that Yosemite allows. I don't like to camp places that have lots of rules, but then there are places like Yosemite where it is worth it :)

      In the Smokeys you have to camp at designated sites which all have bear bag hanging cables. They're easy to use and work great so I would highly recommend carrying less weight and just using those.

      Jay beat me to this one again. :) Yes, the Smokies have the bear cables. I wouldn't use this when I'm there.

      Annie Farmer Lucky. I was there in late November for 4 days and even night hiked for a couple of hours but no bears. Just bear poop.

    Have you ever taken the bear can with the Exos 38 into the field? Tips?

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  7 лет назад

      Ha, funny you should ask this. I'm heading out this weekend with it. I'm all packed and it's tight for sure. I keep the compressible stuff at the very bottom (hammock and down bag) and squished as tight as I can. If you don't have gear that compresses really well it would be impossible I think. Then I put the bear can in. Miscellaneous stuff goes around it. Everything I don't mind getting wet (tarp, crocs, rain jacket, pack cover etc.) fit into the large mesh pocket.

    Tim, in what order do you pack it into your pack for load management? Thank you

    • @TimWatsonOutdoors
      @TimWatsonOutdoors  4 года назад +1

      Middle of the pack, closest to my back. Too high and you’ll be top heavy.

      Tim Watson thank you for the reply. Just one more. I have read reviews on the BV 500 and they all stay the top is hard to get off in the cold weather. Did you experience that at all? You made it look easy taking it off. Love your videos!

      Some minor difficulty on cold mornings. Hard to tell if it’s cold hands or the cold plastic. There’s a trick using a credit card to slide behind the tabs if you’re concerned about it. I’ve never needed it.

    As a side note, the Bearvaults re not bear proof. Bears have gotten a tooth or nail under the lid and destroyed it along with getting your food. Look it up on people backpacking the AT.
