Something that's worth mentioning about Mastermind is that makes it much easier for her to get Hit +20, Uncanny Blow, and/or Darting Blow when playing with a very restricted EXP pool (especially Hit +20 earlier on when she has the most issues with her Hit, granted you can also patch this up with Soulblade), allowing her to function much better when she is sniping/Nosferatu tanking (very funny that she can occasionally actually do this without the wasteful Armour Knight cert btw) instead of warping or using Heal or whatever. Even if you could argue that any magical unit could feasibly get these by endgame, it also has the benefit of reducing the burden of needing to feed attacks to Lysithea as she can functionally get the same amount of SP from fewer battles, reducing the burden of her needing to stay behind the front line on enemy phase to an extent and synergising well with her extreme growths, which also let her get away with levelling up less when she needs to be used offensively. Freeing up a Knowledge Gem if you're not looking to just crack her skill growth out is also a great boon, as is increasing her propensity to access off-meta (i.e. bad) builds if ur feeling like being a nonce is nice, too. It patches up her banes to an extent, making it less of a chore to get into those weapon-based intermediates (specifically Pegasus Knight). It also carrying utility when Lysithea is an adjutant is fantastic too, making her an appropriate pick for a front-line adjutant earlier on if you don't mind trading up the defensive utility a brawler/armour adjutant provides in the early midgame. It's extremely handy whether you decide to take her down the path of Bishop -> Gremory or Valkyrie -> Dark Flier/Gremory and in general just overall improves Lysithea's funny potential beyond just map skipping with Warp and lets her get a huge amount of mileage out of Thyrsus regardless of whether you are trading it around or just keeping it on her. I think saying it falls off a lot is doing it a bit of a disservice because its ultimate payoff beyond just earlier certifications/mastery is vastly improved flexibility in late game when compared to other magical units, which generally need to specialise heavily into non-traditional magical offence or (more likely) back-/mid-line utility to stay relevant later on. It lets her function as a magical attacker that can compete with physical attacker competition without needing to spec into a weird combat art playstyle or an awkward-to-maintain magical weapon build or whatever.
I will say Hapi is really good on the Leonie/Linhardt paralogue bc Saint Indech uses magic and she has high res, so it lets you hide low res units right in front of him and be fine
Good list and a fun watch. I do think this list (and people in general) overrates the +exp gain on Byleth and house lord personals, but honestly most personals don't have a huge impact so maybe they do deserve to be S tier. The rest of the list is really good and I like it a lot.
I can see why you think that, but for me - espeically with Byleth, it is so impactful on the early game that I think it has to be there. With Byleth you can get 4-5 units to level five - and thus in beginner classes - in time for Chapter 3, whereas without it, you are looking at maybe 1-2. This is particularly impactful on your mages, who suffer from half casts in the starter classes, and have very limited exp as a result, as well as being especially desperate for the upgrade.
My favorite thing about Yuri’s personal is that it works well with Windsweep which is kind of Yuri’s early game. Some of my favorite kills in the game have been a split phase Brave kill with Windsweep followed by Batt Vantage with Honorable Spirit.
Lysithea’s mastermind is the best in my opinion cause it allows easy access to certifications of classes she wont actually be using without harming the progress in her main classes why this is helpful is quite simple you can use early certification for stat boosts In my case cause she always struggles with defence just being able to pass the armour knight exam brings her defence up to 12 regardless of what it was at previously Seeing as she starts at 3 defence and the basic magic classes won’t increase her defence by much that boost helps a lot
on average Armored Knight will give her +6 HP and +8 Defense on top of a strength boost to help her carry weaponry. It is worth mentioning though that all advanced classes give at least 12 base defense like armored knight, so she will get it eventually, but 10 levels earlier is worth considering if you aren’t rushing Warp/Dark Spikes
I think this is one of those really weird certifications that I see why people like it, but I'm not a huge fan. I just very rarely feel the actual impacts of the stat boosts from Armor Knight on Lysithea - a unit who is typically deep in my backline due to warps + low movement. Thats entirely personal to me though so if it works for you, go for it!
99% of the time Manuela's personal is awful but at least for me (I've done Silver Snow 4 times) it feels like it deserves a higher ranking because of how truly life-saving it is against the final boss of Silver Snow. That boss is so damn tanky and has pretty decent crit chance. I feel like I usually get crit 3-4 times by it. Granted I'm always playing for fun, never with a team full of fully optimized units, so I suppose if you had an optimal team you wouldn't take so many hits. But I'm always thanking the stars for Manuela's personal at the end of that fight, because that's one fight where you actually have to be careful about bleeding pulses, and her personal can be the difference between having to redo that fight or not. The fact that you can pulse after getting crit and then move her in to avoid the crit is also nice in a couple situations where any other shuffling of attacks is awkward.
if you take the percentages of all the growths in all the stats of all the characters, Byleth and Claude has 370, Dimitri 375 and Edelgard 385, while other characters are lower. Without the passive, Cyril would have 215, which is horrible. But with it, it goes up to 395. Higher than all the main characters. Not to mention he gets both point blank volley and vengeance. As long as you recruit him as early as you can, he's OP.
Great list, I agree with most placements, except balthus. I understand the logic of Balthus having the anti synergy with his crest, but the fact that his personal singlehandedly trivializes the early game and is one of the few personals that will continue to be really impactful later on means it's, in my opinion, the best personal in 3h
Balthus' personal is definitely stellar for sure, but I think Ignatz and Bernie's are also incredibly impactful early but maintain a lot more relevance as the game goes on, whereas I feel Balthus' falls away a bit - particularly the Defence aspect of it. It never becomes irrelevant or anything like that, but it isn't quite at the same point as Bernie's or Ignatz for me. Definitely don't think it's a bad option to put on top though.
I feel Annette should be higher A tier. You essentially give a unit +5 AS when using Rally speed as well depending on the units strength score not being at a benchmark thats already dividable by 5
I think Mercedes' personal skill is quite good since Fortify gives so much more experience points, double that of physic. She can intentionally tank a hit, chip it back with Fire, and then just shrug it off completely with her big level lead. It makes her solo 1 enemy on enemy phase over 2-3 turns, like two to three times a map, or just help chip/delay something. Her equip skills (and her skill ranks other than white magic for that matter) as a healer also don't really matter, so you can just defensively load her up with +2 def, speed, mag, hp +5 and reason 5. It's like Byleth's where you get more value for trying to get value out of it intentionally, just a bit smaller in scope.
50:50 I do think it has a use in the ranged magic build cause it actually makes it viable to attain dark magic range +1 at a reasonable level and during my run as it I even got dark tomefare towards the end. Which stacked on top of the +1 range of Valkary and the +2 range from the relic made her one shot almost anything from any range. Without mastermind S and S+ reason ranks would be totally out of the question. It's still quite an investment but it is attainable.
Mariannes ability is 20 not 10 , and in the verdant wind fort merceus chapter , i had lorenz and leonie (who were both cavalry) either side of her and when she was targeted by the ballistas she fully healed at the start of the turn, that was fun to play around with.
Ingrid’s personal should be a little higher it actually makes her one of the more reliable gambit users on your team as her charm is decent and the flying battalions you give her on blue lions boost it even more

I don't really have any opinions on them as a whole really, Huberts and Marianne's are great, Yuri's is fine, the majority don't really stand out at all and are super low impact.
Petras crit boost on enemies under half, if i had to find a useful scenario, are when shes using a physical weapon against something with high defense? Like, a mage brought an armored knight down to under half, petra can double and likely crit both with that? But, yeah, 99% of the time, its just overkill
Animal Friend > Catnap It's 20% heal not 10%, Marianne sees more combat than Linhardt, she can easily position for it to proc, it stacks with Renewal, she can actually use her turn instead of using Wait... Was kinda sad your determination was based upon 10% instead of 20%. Oh well, her not having a personal for 1/4 the game potentially does suck though, I'll give you that.
20% over 10% makes absolutely no difference really, and I would still have it behind Linhardts. 10% extra hp on Marianne is not allowing her to take an extra attack on the maddening difficulty (and in practicality it's like.. what... healing 4 or 5 more hp at max in endgame?). Linhardt might actually get something out of Catnap on chapter 1 & 2, whereas the Marianne one will basically never see play because by the time you actually can access it, a 4-10hp selfheal is just not valuable at all .
Re: Aptitude, I get why people complain about him not just having +20 everywhere else and another personal instead, but at the same time, it's purpose from a game design PoV isn't just to give him better stats: it is also to communicate to a player (who can't see growth rates without looking them up online) that this character, while not necessarily immediately stellar, is going to have very high stats later on and is thus worth investing time and experience into. It is very much a unit feel choice as much as it is a game balance/unit design choice: forgoing a "real" personal skill in exchange for growing much faster than other units is much more interesting from a game design PoV than just making a normal character with high growths.
He is a high stat unit in endgame. Just that it's high stat in terms of stat total instead of being high stat in terms of the more useful metric of "high where it's most useful." The only issue with Cyril as a growth unit who is a high stat unit by the endgame is that his growths are unfocussed and are a bit too stingy, meaning that in practice his identity gets relegated to "the least great Vengeance user". This is an issue with Cyril specifically rather than the decision to do the growth unit thing with an ability instead of stats, as it still achieves its purpose of improving unit feel by signalling that he's going to grow faster than other units (which is entirely true) and putting his average growths above even lords (and >10% higher than the averages of Bernadetta and Dedue lol). 43.9% is pretty monstrous as far as average growth rates go. In terms of stat totals he'll be tying up with or overtaking a lot of high stat units like OOH Leonie by the time he's getting into the lv 30-35 range. Though a stat monster like OOH Ingrid, who literally gets Lord-tier average growths for some reason, is probably a bit out of reach for a bit longer. Just that he will end up lagging a bit on Str and Spe where he's stuck matching her growths rather than surpassing them. They could fix it by just making Aptitude 30% instead of 20% to lean into it more and/or by giving Cyril a Str growth that puts into the 50%, 60% etc. range after Aptitude.
@@alexpowell1184this is totally true, Cyril is such a noob trap, his growths are awful and they are just decent with aptitude... like... are they blind or just dumb?

some of Claude’s best builds (Vantage Wrath, Alert Stance Dodge Tank etc.) imo are enemy phase builds, so Pass is very nice for getting Claude into positions he otherwise couldn’t reach where he can crit kill a ton of enemies. Even for player phase Claude builds, Pass allows him to use his 8 move in basically any direction regardless of enemies, which gives him the best movement in the game without any investment post-time skip, and so he becomes a fantastic boss killer in LTC strats or even just to delete troublesome enemies in a group then canto away. Pass in a nutshell just capitalises on everything that makes flying movement great, and claude gets this on top of the EXP bonus (which should be S tier on its own imo)

Hit+20 is extremely helpful - although this list does assume no grinding, but even if you do, supports are only active on the Player Phase, making it highly useful for your EP units..
@@JonoabboFE ah yeah i get your point! i'm mostly a player phase guy haha. i don't really run vantage myself. just maybe 1 or 2 "baits" that attract units that take little to no damage, then kill everyone with all other units on player phase.
good content though!
just finished my MCAT and waiting for results. Gonna do CF and BL routes maddening next, and finally Silver Snow.
trying to get death blow on yuri (ashen wolves my absolute favourite) then turn him into assassin / sniper / swordmaster.
In terms of aptitude it gives Cyril the highest total growths in the game at 395%. But really the only stats that matter is Strength, speed, and maybe defense. So that's good. He's alot better then most units when trained except Leonie or Petra because their growths are also really good. If Cyril just had these growths like normal and another personal skill he'd probably have a different opinion among others. Still Growths are not too impactful.
For some reason my Cyril had a boon in magic because he had 20 strength and 21 magic. Bruh...
Felix B? Petra C? DEDUE in A!? iight im out
correction: Felix is an easy S tier unit.
Petra is an A MAYBE B
and Dedue is a C arguably a B unit.
imo
You realise this is tiering their personal abilities... right?
..... damn. Im so sorry brother thats embarrassing its even in the frickin title smh. Im playing and watching this in the background so it definitely wasn't receiving my undivided attention i apologize. your tiers make complete sense now! lol good tier list @@JonoabboFE
