- The Bobbettes perform their hit song "Mr. Lee" in a medley with the follow up "I Shot Mr. Lee" at Ponderosa Stomp in New York City on July 16, 2009.
Shot by Ken Shane with a Flip HD video camera.
Those old gals still ROCK! Go Bobettes!
On this day in 1960 {June 28th} "I Shot Mr. Lee" by the Bobbettes entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #95; and August 1st, 1960 it peaked at #52 {for 1 week} and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100...
Both sides of their next release made the Top 100; "Have Mercy Baby" peaked at #66 while the B-side, "Dance With Me Georgie" reached #95...
Sadly, four of the group's five members have passed away; Jannie Pought {1945 - 1980}, Reather Dixon {1945 - 2014}, Laura Webb {1941 - 2001}, and Helen Gathers {1942-2011}
May they R.I.P.
Surviving member Emma Pought celebrated her 72nd birthday two months ago on April 28th, 2014...
The very first R&R song I have ever heard .. I changed the station on the radio , and heard this .. WOW ! I was hooked on the spot ..
50 years later..... They still got it!😘😘😘
So much energy! Tight harmonies, smooth choreography. Would love to see them!
Met them in 1999 in Harlem along with a roster of other 50s\60s classic hit makers at photo shoot for r&b poster which culminated with a smash show at the Schomburg! What a memorable day! Great moment in time! Ya had to be there! ❤🎉
Great singers,doowop never died😅
On this day in 1957 {September 11th} Alan Freed's 'The Biggest Show of Stars For 1957' concert tour played the Cincinnati Gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio...
Appearing in the concert were The Crickets, The Bobbettes, The Everly Brothers, Bubby Knox, Frankie Lyman, Eddie Cochran, and Chuck Berry...
At the time "That'll Be the Day" was at #3 on the Billboard's Top 100 chart; "Mr. Lee" at #7, "Bye, Bye Love" at #10, "Hula Love" at #21, "Goody Goody" at #24, "Drive-In Show" at #82, and "School Days" at #98...
The rest of the bill featured Fats Domino, Paul Anka, Clyde McPhatter, LaVern Baker, The Drifters, Johnnie & Joe, the Spaniels, and Jimmy Bowen...
I was 12 years old at the time and would have loved to been in one of the Cinny Gardens' 10,210 seats...
fabulous ladies !
The ladies rock it!
What a wonderful performance. WOW!!!!!
Fabulous video posted by kshane! I remember The Bobettes both when they hit it big with their "Mr. Lee" tune as well as when they returned to the Apollo Theater for an early 1970's oldies show and, yes, Reather Dixon-Turner was the lead voice and dancing spark amongst the group! Sad to think that there are only two original Bobettes left along with Helen Gathers who left for good in '62, but seeing and listening to 'em live herein is a pleasure!
Good show.
Great song sung by great ladies.
YOu GO GRRRRLS!! (Ladies!)
Puttin chills down my spine!!
I remember when this song first came out-- us kids sang it alot!!!
Akways loved this song. The girls still sing just as well as ever, well done, thanks for the posting
First time seeing them perform this live. I'm not sure who's all originals, but this neat.
You go girls, still sound good
How cool it must've been to seen them in concert!
TRUE TALENT.. Love this song!
I just discovered this song using Shazam (music finding application on my phone) and i was driving when this came on the radio, just finished work, sunny weather and the song could not have made the rest of my day better!
PS: dont dance and drive
Luv this one of all time favorites 😂❤
they still got it.
Something still left.
But not really "it".
Sounds like my life now! Lol Had 'it' .. air's kinda leaking out now!
I love them!
Rock on ladies....👍
Having a good time
Just like butter
Little History Fact - the first song "I Shot Mr. Lee" was banned from the airwave, and then later renamed "Mr. Lee", changing the words completely.
Mr Lee actually came out first, and was originally about how much the girls disliked their teacher. The record label wouldn't release it as it was, and made the girls change the lyrics to having a crush on him instead. I Shot Mr Lee came out a few years later :)
@@TheOriginalDalamanza I've both read that they didn't like him, AND that the original lyrics weren't hate, but actually just a description of what he looked like. Supposedly they even sang it for him and he called them in to the office when the changed version of the song came out to make sure someone hadn't stolen their song. I'd love to know the exact details.
I got a warm feeling listening to these gals...yes! still!
It was 2 days ago l heard this song on RUclips and here are the actual singers...they sound good 👍
Awesome!!!!....swing baby!!!!, the good all days are back.
Thanks.
Beautiful! Then and now.
Que grandiosa aportación!!! Canciones de antaño muy originales y ellas con gran energía. Congrats!!!
Jorge Enrique Estrada Muñoz Muchísima energía por las antiguas. Fantástica!
That was great....really a fun performance!!
Go Bobbetts❤
There's nothing like these old songs
NOTHING REALLY COMPARES
Love it, such a wonderful song, love ya work Ladies, brilliant!
What blows my mind is that when Mr. Lee was recorded, the girls were aged 11-13.
And mr. lee was their school teacher.
@@sludge4125
And they hated him.
These girls are still Rockin' it man!
Yep i agree - i loved it - i would never have heard of the Bobettes if not for the uploads and youtube - a big thanks for posting
NICE...why'd it take me so long to check this out...thanks for sharing
Awesome
mwahahaha..........This has got to be the funnest song ever,,..them ladies must love doin it
Lead singer Reather Dixon (born in 1945), second lead Emma Pought (1944), her soprano sister Jannie Pought (1945), tenor Laura Webb (1943) and alto Helen Gathers (1944) began singing together along with a couple of other girls, at Public School #109.
Helen Gathers left the group for good in 1962. Jannie Pought died in 1980 and Laura Webb passed away in 2001.
I can remember singing this song with some of my girlfriends at recess when I was in 5th or 6th grade at Loara Elementary in CA.
You have their birthday's wrong. Reather was my mother so I know. Thanks for the support💋
Love it!!!
THAT IS SOOOOO NICE !!!
thanx for posting loved it!!!!!!!!!!!
RIP mama Thompson! You will be missed. We WILL see you again soon :)
M
I wouldve loved to watch them back in the day , It seems Like They are Hella Into The Song . So imagine if they were young !!! Mustve been fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😔 Butt Nice Song Still To This Day .
Impressionante, eu era ainda garoto e essa musica estourou, muito legal ter a oportunidade de ouvi-la ao vivo. Vejo uma grande semelhança com Rockin' Robin do Michael Jackson
On this day in 1960
To me they did everything in music that you can do in one song. Loved the harmony. Hey! Think they will get into the rock hall of fame?
GREATE.......................SUPER//////..............
LEGENDS
you GO girls ! partieeeeeee
#StillGotIt
Classy.
Does anyone know that they were in high school when they made this record? Mr. Lee was the Principal of the high school. He was o.k. with the Mr. Lee song but wasn't too amused with I Shot Mr. Lee. Just a little trivia.
Great ! 😀
The Bobbettes Forever P.s. what happened to the 5th member because I remember 5 girls
That went south real fast,😂 😂
I remember one of them saying they killed off Mr Lee because they were fed up with other groups ripping off their song.
I dedicated this song kevin lee this is his song
Look at those gals really start enjoying themselves, as they sing the original murder version the 50s radio stations banned.
Mr. Lee, in reality, was a mean and horrible teacher they detested.
Mr. Lee was my French teacher at Oakland High School (1960) and the class used to sing this song to him in French--un, deux, trois. It scans. Too bad this group was a one hit wonder. The group included Jannie and Emma Pought, Reather Dixon, Lara Webb, and Helen Gather. Any idea who these four are?
Cuando si cantas…!!!L
I can't find any footage from the early days performing. Would love to hear the original line up and the tight harmonies.
Remember a time when people could sing and harmonize without auto tune or computers? Artists could learn from this.
OMG sad RIP her
Era garoto quando ouvi essa musica pela primeira vez, acho que o Michael Jackson copiou em Rock robin
Every video of them is consistent. They developed a sound decades ago as KIDS that they maintained as adults and then as Seniors. NOT a light accomplishment by any means!!!
HEY is that Mickey Baker???
Your username is very telling.
wow, they're all still alive! or they were in 2009 anyway...
slushh Actually, as of 2014, only 1 original member was still alive. Reather died in 2014, not long after Phil Everly. At least 1 member was murdered.
ugh don't tell me that
One of them IS still alive. In the video there had to have been several newer members.I know how you feel---Phil was quite a loss, too! I'm amazed they found newer members who could do the show so well, though.
It seems Reather just wore herself out. Still pretty young...
These are the artists who should be sitting in mansions and not today’s gangsta rappers.
Is the one on the left Reather Dixon?
Yes
it's BOBBETTE's not BOBETTE 's
The other singer was stabbed on the street of New York in 1980 by a stranger.
In Jersey City, not New York
So true. But what's with the outfits? (I saw them in Green Bay and they looked much better than this. They also did some songs no one would associate with them, and just nailed some spectacular harmony to the wall!) Those are some truly awful outfits (what my friends and I call "ought nots") And it wouldn't take much to improve the whole thing. I love the lady on the left, she is so cool.
