  • Amazon bin stores and liquidation in general has been going downhill. What is really going on here? Where's the good stuff? Why is there nothing good at bin stores lately? Why are bin stores closing down? Why do more bin stores keep opening? Let's hear what Colton Carlson has to say with his knowledge of the industry. I will also speak on my perspective as a current bin store owner and operator. Spoiler alert - this is an unpopular opinion.

    Great video, Lindey, I think we need more content like this, showing not just the good but the ugly side of this industry as well. I think it can prevent a lot of people from just jumping into this business without having a good a idea what they getting themselves into. I also seen a lot of eBay stores shutting down because merchandise has gotten too expensive and you end up getting a lot of garbage rendering this business totally unprofitable.

    Our friend opened a pallet liquidation store here in Phoenix. We bought an Amazon pallet & a Walmart pallet (at a small discount) to give him feedback. The Amazon pallet was crap, nothing but cheap private label items that there's no way we can resell other than at our garage sale. The Walmart pallet was a little better as there was actually name brand items. But, one thing we noticed was a lot of items were crushed, therefore we will need to sell at a discount. After listening to Colton, totally makes sense why the Amazon pallet sucked lol I'd be shocked if we broke even.

They were throwing stuff, pushy, rude & trashing stuff. I was disgusted at how they were acting. I was being careful not to break anything while they were just throwing stuff & breaking it. I live in Michigan, seems like we were a little late to the party when it comes to the Bin Store trend. Now we have a healthy amount of bin stores. I have seen the the evolution of the bin store that you describe in this video. When bin stores first opened they were stock full of great finds and it was a lot of fun going to these stores. Now I find it difficult to walk away with a great deal. There are many bin stores near me that I now longer visit due to the quality of items in the bins, actual garbage, and broken items are more common now.

      I have had this experience with both old men and old ladies in stores, especially Goodwill, as well. I'm middle aged, so I wonder if they target people in my age range. Younger people might push back, older people might fall over, but middle aged people seem to be a good target. I have found that looking them directly in the eye and saying "Touch me again and I scream pervert." to old men or "Thief" to old women usually gets them to go find other prey.

    I’m a veteran bin store picker - your spot on , on numerous points.
    The loads are rough. Too much home goods and not enough decent items.
    I’ve heard the Load dealers are not trustworthy. They get new bin stores hooked on good loads. Then start sending them horrible loads with old dollar general clearance junk , school supplies and leftover holiday crap.
    Lastly - the customers are in fact terrible. Having had a decade of experience I can confirm that a certain segment of the population routinely rips open boxes and destroys inventory. Let’s just say , if you can’t read English , you don’t know what these boxes say and what’s the solution ? Rip the box open and dump it all out. Of coarse.
    Most of the stores here have gone to the “ don’t open “ policy and it somewhat helps but then there’s a line to look at your items and a lot of people don’t like it.
    Good luck with your store.

    If you can't control your customers, then you'll surely end up with a pile of "Chinese-made" trash. I saw this happen at "Lowest Prices" bin stores..Yet, their sister liquidation store "That's Cheap" is better organized and always clean. I think that Amazon and Target know all this and are killing your business. Goodwill Centers (bin stores) have better quality merchandise sold by the pound, at least here in California. Super crowded.

    A couple of years ago when you first started I showed it to my husband as a possible business idea because we want to open a business when we go back to the US and thought one that didn’t require a whole lot of previous experience might be an idea.I had reselling experience similar to yours before you opened your storefront , but not retail so much.
    You kept saying diluted inventory, and I kept thinking about us *deluded* potential bin owners.
    He thinks a restaurant is a good idea and I think a restaurant is a horrific idea because I have worked in restaurants before. I am considering getting a house with a big garage, and to go back to what I was doing before, and adjusting to the reality that exists now or in my future in the US. I went from zero to pretty darn good pretty fast back in the good ole eBay days. Those are quite changed also but I’m trying to keep up with the different platforms and honestly I still kind of like eBay but I kind of got a crafty direction I might want to go in because that’s my passion along with reselling. There are a lot of good ideas and a lot of places that people go to and still need and 2020 something and they may be online or they may be different but I have time to keep working on that one I guess.

    I know a number of people including myself that go to bin stores and do not trash the place. It has nothing to do with the store, it is who you are as a person and you will find those kind of people in every business. I have noticed that bin stores have gone down in the quality of what they have and now I know why

    If you have good items you don't even have to advertise your store will packed. If you have no customers there is a reason why - you store is selling junk. The amount of customers tell you how great your store is. If they are sending you junk drop your prices. Junk even sells if the price is low.

    How much of this is the risk of buying unmanifested pallets from Amazon? I'd rather buy manifested pallets from other liquidation suppliers/vendors--at least I know what I'm getting and I reduce the risk of dilution.

    • @LindeyGlenn
      @LindeyGlenn  8 месяцев назад +10

      Manifested is fine but that doesn't help quality control. I've paid a premium for manifested truckloads but all of the most valuable stuff was either missing or damaged. Manifested tells you what will be in the load... it doesn't guarantee the condition is good

      He must have deep pockets. There are a lot of bin stores doing pretty well and even expanding to multiple locations. It seems to be the ones with a LOT of cash able to absorb any losses or bad weeks. Also having contacts or contracts for multiple dependable loads. Unfortunately not every bin store owner has that 🤷‍♀️

      Nobody should be allowed to sell crappy merchandise to a customer, especially by the truckload. The inustry needs to be regulated and the scammers charged and banned. Who else is allowed to stay in business by scamming people.

    • @LindeyGlenn
      @LindeyGlenn  8 месяцев назад +1

      It's the sales model. A bin store is basically digging through bins with a structured price and a liquidation store has individually priced items more organized

    • @AngeliaPainter
      @AngeliaPainter 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@LindeyGlenn we used to have a great grocery store here that was essentially a bin store that was organized. Unfortunately the owner died because the business was killing it, they had eight stores inthis area. You never knew what would find when you went in there, but there were so many great deals.
      We now have Ollies, and people don't realize that Ollies is exactly the same thing - it's a bin store that is better organized. Because they are so big, they have the buying power to get the best pallets first. There are a couple of smaller stores operating on the Ollies principal now here, but their selection isn't as good and they are locally owned.
