It took me some time and effort to find them, but it's so worth it since it means I won't have to fly across multiple countries just for a tattoo :)
Imitation can be flattery. But it's all contextual. In high school I used to constantly doodle the same Frank the Bunny picture. One of my friends told me that somebody they knew saw it and got it tattooed on them. At the time, I was very flattered. But if you pour all your time and effort to find and define yourself and create your own thing and then all that effort is hijacked by some internet company that sells it on mugs and shirts, that's not flattering.

As an artist, I have no issue with people copying work. Only thing is, if you do copy and don't put your own spin on it, give credit to the original artist. Don't claim it as your own.
As an artist too, I agree. But just don't do that with tattoos that have special meaning. For the person you copied it from, it has a meaning. It would be disrespectful to just copy it because it looks cool...

I had a tattoo that my dad had wanted while in ICU 8yrs ago. There was a marking on one of his books he was reading. He said " oh that's nice, I'll have that as tattoo when i get out of hospital" He never came out of hospital So my siblings and nieces all had it done, but in our own styles. I loved my tattoo when it was done. But in the last 7yrs its faded really badly .. Looking at some of her recent posts, ive seen she's used my design in other peoples tattoos 😔😔
Like I always say: Art theft is art theft no matter what medium. When I bring a reference to my appointment, I don't expect my tattoo to look exactly like the reference picture. I expect the artist to use it as an inspiration and create something new from it that shows their own talent and creativity.
What Bulman said about Brazil is sooooo true. Here we almost don't have "tattoo artists", actually in Portuguese we don't even have a word to differentiate the professionals who create original art and those who just replicate someone else's art - like the tattoo artists v. tattooers in English - everyone is called a "tatuador" (tattooer). So generally when you go to a tattooer you would bring them the exact final design that you want in your body. I guess you'd only find a proper tattoo artist in the big cities like São Paulo or Rio that have a stronger influence from North American culture, and boy, aren't those professionals REEEEALLY expensive for our Brazilian standards
Wow, how humble are these human beings. I love each and everyone of them, especially the guy with the beanie who was brave enough to call himself out. That's a whole level of humbleness right there and I love it!!! ❤
I think alot of people forget that tattoos were once just same drawings up on a wall to pick through which is why so many traditional tattoos are similar (anchors roses etc). Mimicry is the greatest form of flattery and many tattooists will put whatever the client wants into the skin and unfortunately many people all want the same black and grey half sleeve with a lion and a clock
I sometimes wonder how tattoo artists feel about tattooing pieces of art (like a Picasso for instance), famous photos/photos of famous people or movie stills in a realistic style. Where does the copyright/tattooers code end?
Is it public domain/pop culture/historical reference? If so, that doesn't really apply. No one is trying to pass that off as their own original design.
@@terminaldeity I agree with you when the artist is really well known and/or deceased, but what if a client comes in with a photograph that the source is unknown of? It's not that the tattoo artist would try and pass a photo off as their own, but it's the possible issue that the original art creator maybe doesn't even know and/or didn't get paid for their art. I mean sure you can say 'the art creator should just be flattered', but that's where I think the line starts to get a little blurry. If you're not a super famous artist and your work still gets copied in any form without credit/payment, it can be a problem if it's unsure where the copyright ends.
@@evabakker I explicitly referred to works of public domain/pop culture/historical reference because that's what you referred to in your original comment. You weren't talking about lesser known artists. You asked about about famous photos and pieces of art. Don't go moving the goal posts. You misrepresent me, as well as yourself.
The one where the guy even copied the nipple feels so passive aggressive I love it. Like "Fuck this guy for even asking me to copy someone else's work!"
To all the pedantic people in the comments, think about it like this. A musician covering a famous song or something in the public domain isn't "stealing" anyone's work, because it's clear what the origin is. A musician passing off a lesser known musician's song as their own IS stealing because the origin is not well-known to the public. Here's an example. Take the band Alien Ant Farm, who are mostly known for their cover of "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson. Is that "stealing?" No, because everyone knows it's a cover. Now, if some other band were to take a lesser known Alien Ant Farm song and pass it off as their own, THAT would be stealing. It's not that complicated.
Alien ant farm paid for the rights to the song and then made their own version. In the music industry you cant just cover a song and make profit. You have to pay.
Actually it’s because in a cover , the original artist is credited and recognized. However, if someone sings a song and does not credit the original they are stealing it as their own
there's two flaws with that comparison 1) song covers credit the artist. 2) song covers are a recreation of someone elses song but with your own style. If we took it to a visual arts perspective we could say that Andy Warhol is doing *covers* that became more famous than the original picture or design. And yet obviously he didn't design the Campbell soup design nor did he take the picture or Marilyn Monroe nor is he claiming he did. He transformed them into something else. the problem with copying art has more to do with someone saying they created something when they actually didn't.
2:48 that is so accurate, lets say it may be just a tattoo with a bunch of flowers arranged in a certain way but for the person that got it it could mean so much more. exactly. if i designed a tattoo for someone and i saw it on another person’s body, yes i’d be mad that someone else got my art on them without my permission, but i’d be even more furious for my original client. they’re meant to be the only person in the world with that design on their body. no one should be allowed to take that from them
You can be mad all you want respectfully but if they like it then they’re gonna get it and live their life they don’t need to have the meaning because that’s your b.s they just liked the image
6:05 Oh sure. Let me just fly to Poland or Japan or Brazil to get tattooed by this very specific artist instead of asking my local tattooer "I like this design. Can you do it". She must have alot of costumers if she can turn down people with "demands and expectations".
Not a fan of copying. I spent 4 yrs researching my next tattoo which I just got a month ago. It holds a specific special meaning. I really don't want to see it anywhere else.
I feel the same way as you I show my artist a whole bunch of stuff pictures of tattoos off the internet and she changes them enough to make something that's going to be you know unique to me and her.
This is why I've never put a picture of my tattoo on social media. My Dad's an artist and drew mine. We took it to this amazing tattooist and he added his own small twists to my dad's art and it turned out beautiful, however, no one has seen it unless they've seen me in person.
Normally for references I only give drawings rather than tattoos… and I give multiple different “styles” or “poses”… while I have an idea in my head, I’m trusting the artist to create something unique & amazing.
In my opinion it’s good to use ideas from others as long as you don’t do an exact copy like you gotta put your own spin on it. Like the saying, “good artist (something), great artists steal”
I wonder how many times an artist has their tattoo copied and they think that of all their amazing tattoos, the one that was stolen was one they thought was one of their worst ones lol.
I feel like it also depends on the client. Some are hard headed and just want that one tattoo and dont want any changes. We are lucky with the artist we have. He draws his own work and throws different references from different images to do a sleeve.
A true artist can only come up with work by seeing a reference first. Meaning you have to see a bird to understand how to put it together on a custom piece... So what's the difference between checking out other peoples work and adding your own twist to it?
I think for me as a client, the only time where I find copying understandable with no real changes is if the original artist is someone in a different country and you can't get tattooed by them, and even then try find an artist with a very similar style.
That’s what I like to do, a lot of times I cant exactly articulate everything/detail I want. Just take an inspo pic to my artist and love to see what he reworks from it every time
2:48 to 3:13 that is so true and I honestly didn’t think about that I personally don’t have any copied tattoos but I understand both parties but I definitely agree with what Sara had to say
Really odd to hear that artist say she doesn’t like when people send her a lot of references. I have a bunch of tattoos and every time I’ve gotten one, the artists ALWAYS ask for plenty of references. Some of this stuff is just artists being too particular, and expecting everyone to just know their peculiarities, even though they’re totally different from the norm of most other artists.
my thoughts exactly when she said that !!! i’ve had artists request reference pictures and it’s just a way of seeing the vision. not everybody is good at explaining art and designs, myself included. pictures always help ! 😂 some people seem to assume that everyone knows what they are thinking. we can’t assume an artist doesn’t like reference pictures, especially when it doesn’t fit with our own experiences !
Also the way she's like "I don't want them to bring me pictures of other tattoo artists stuff. If you want that, maybe you should go to them." Like wow, great customer service there. I live in the US but I really like the style of an artist in Germany. So by her logic, I have to go all the way to Germany to get a tattoo in that style instead of asking another artist to adapt a picture of something to that art style if they are able to.
I am not an artist, when I talk to a tattoo artist about what I want I can't describe it in certain terms because I can't really see it myself. I use references to base what style and design I am looking for. Neither me nor the artist want our time wasted. References are a tool, to say you don't want any references just goes to show how snobby that artist is. "Go to them" uh maybe they are thousands of miles away. Maybe you can't for the life of you find the artist who did that tattoo. So I have to find an artist who looks like they have that similar skill or style and give them the reference. Idk that just sounded stuck up and I wouldn't want to get tatted by her
This is hard especially as a new tattoer, ex: some people bring in work and they want that exactly, you can say "let me change it" but some won't want it. This is the hardest part as an artist where people limit creativity. You can switch a lot of things, but some people are stubborn and want what is already in the image. A lot of artist dislike it
I really wanna know everyone's thoughts on ornamental tats, what makes a good dynamic of tats. Right now I'm hesitant to get some work done. I really don't wanna fuck up 🥲
hmmm i kinda fear that by saying "i feel flattered and respected" this stealing will get worse because the art thefts think they do something good. I don't want to say they have a wrong opinion but they should be careful with saying things like that because it's still stealing
On Instagram recently I saw someone with a copy of one of Horitomo's monmon cats - and they tagged both Horitomo and the artist who copied it. That seemed pretty bold, but maybe they had permission?
I'm from Colombia and tattoo copycats is not well received. Almost all of the tattoo artist I know strive for their own original work and think the same about copycats as you do. I think the ones that copy and tag the original tattoo artist, only do it so they get "more advertisement" out of it because their own work doesn't.
Someone is just full of themselves, the styles get evolving artist after artist because all of us take inspiration from another from the first rose to the last portrait
Take it from me everybody. My first tattoo was straight up copied and it’s the worst tattoo I have. My advice would be go in and give them your idea and let them design it themselves so you always get their best work.
I bought a flash from a tattoo artist that’s in Europe (I’m in America) - I explicitly told him that I’d get it tweaked and tattooed by my own artist to fit my style, so I essentially bought the concept of it. I think that’s also something that could be done if the artist you follow is too far away to get tattooed by them instead of flat out copying something that might be extremely personal.
Great question to show who is humble and who isn’t lol, would definitely feel more comfortable getting tattooed by the people who were more ok with it, and felt flattered by being copied.
I love how they framed this question. They couldn't just say "copying" because a lot of tattooers copy. Not use reference, they straight up, go to google, search, and copy. Whether it's photos, or illustrations, it's only a problem if it's a tattoo. It is VERY uncomfortable. Which makes it all the more fun to do.
Me who is covered in traditional tattoos that are mostly the same as other peoples traditional tattoos. I don't know how many different ways you can draw a rose or eagle lol
What I said. This is the exception lol. I think the art of tattooing started with copying. Someone would see tattoos in one city then start doing them in another. I think it’s less about the artist and more about the client though. I would hate to get something unique then have it become so popular that it becomes tacky. (See: guys w/ forearm forests & girls w/ leopard print)
Yea I love the old flash
Flash is much different.
This whole video applies to people who get extremely expensive and specialized tattoos. Someone getting a skull or some basic shit is bound to have something similar to someone else.
Same can be said for Disney characters or celebrities and cartoons .. you can only do so much .. I barely see people with unique tattoos and that’s ookay!! We are all alike in many ways ..
I am a writer, and I was writing in a group once when I noticed another writer in the group copying my ideas not even days after I presented and began fleshing them out. I called her out on copying me before I was even finished my own work and she hid behind "copying is the best flattery". I told her "not if it's before I even get to finish the work!" Everyone else started calling her out for the disrespect and she backed down. I hope I helped her to become a better and more respectful writer.
Her: Yea, I've seen my tattoo copied often in Russia.
Russia: This is now OUR tattoo.
Underrated comment
Loved that they're making the distinction between tattooer and a tattoo artist. Gotta understand that some people just replicate/do whatever the client brings and then there's people who only tattoo what they have defined as their personal style.

Nora makes a lot of sense. There's some REALLY great work that I LOVE coming out of South Korea, Japan and Other places around Europe and scandinavia but of course I don't have the money right now to go to those places to get tattooed. Of course, I'm trying to save money to go there and get tattooed but I totally get why people who can't afford that would ask people to copy the style for them. Totally understandable.
Or you can pay the artist that you like money to design something for you and then take it to a local tattooer who will put it on you :)
You can also try finding nearby artists with styles similar to the ones that are popular in other countries! I love horror South Korean tattoos, and I found someone a couple hours away who does tattoos in that kind of style. It took me some time and effort to find them, but it's so worth it since it means I won't have to fly across multiple countries just for a tattoo :)
i think there is a difference between respecting and liking the idea and putting their spin on it but an exact copy no not v dennis rodman
Imitation can be flattery. But it's all contextual. In high school I used to constantly doodle the same Frank the Bunny picture. One of my friends told me that somebody they knew saw it and got it tattooed on them. At the time, I was very flattered. But if you pour all your time and effort to find and define yourself and create your own thing and then all that effort is hijacked by some internet company that sells it on mugs and shirts, that's not flattering.
you didnt create your own thing, you made a Donny Darko fan art.
did you ever get to see a picture of the tattoo? i think i would be flattered as well, but i totally get if you've changed your mind over the years lol.

I think it's great that this topic is being discussed and explained. I know a lot of the time, the client just doesn't know that copying a custom tattoo is unethical.
Me and my tattoo artist asked permission from an artist to tattoo her painting and change the colors. She gave permission and loved how the tattoo came out and posted it and everything. It was a respect thing to ask first.
I had a tattoo that my dad had wanted while in ICU 8yrs ago. There was a marking on one of his books he was reading. He said " oh that's nice, I'll have that as tattoo when i get out of hospital"
He never came out of hospital
So my siblings and nieces all had it done, but in our own styles.
7:37 i'm brazilian and i can honestly say that it is not an honor to copy other people's work here... it's very much frowned upon :/
I'm looking at all the blue eyed lion/rose/clockface/hourglass/loyalty/crown tattoo right now.............
Such a good subject
That is a good question! I have a portion of an El Greco painting on my arm and since getting it I’ve question it’s ethics

Except THAT would not be stealing regardless of popularity a cover is a cover
Alien ant farm paid for the rights to the song and then made their own version. In the music industry you cant just cover a song and make profit. You have to pay.
Actually it’s because in a cover , the original artist is credited and recognized. However, if someone sings a song and does not credit the original they are stealing it as their own
there's two flaws with that comparison
1) song covers credit the artist.
Except they purchased the rights to the music & if they didn’t they would be sued

Well it is hard to keep the design a secret I guess
exactly. if i designed a tattoo for someone and i saw it on another person’s body, yes i’d be mad that someone else got my art on them without my permission, but i’d be even more furious for my original client. they’re meant to be the only person in the world with that design on their body. no one should be allowed to take that from them

There's a fine line between copy catting, or being influenced
All artists take from others to make something new, but always describe your inspirations
Alternate title: Calling out CopyTats.
Normally for references I only give drawings rather than tattoos… and I give multiple different “styles” or “poses”… while I have an idea in my head, I’m trusting the artist to create something unique & amazing.
6:04 oh come on...
Yea...kinda comes off as full of herself and not an ideal tattooist for me tbh...not a fan of that logic
An artist, a True artist, doesn't need to copy...if you copy someone else's work, you ain't no artist, no matter how well you copy it. Simple as that!
A true artist can only come up with work by seeing a reference first. Meaning you have to see a bird to understand how to put it together on a custom piece... So what's the difference between checking out other peoples work and adding your own twist to it?
All artist steal. The great ones steal in a smart way
There is a difference between referencing and copying. Professionals will always reference to stay accurate.
@@sarahelizabeth9340 very true. But the sad reality is many of the "greats" straight up stole their work from other artists and/or their assistants.
@@seansgonewrong Just because it was great doesn’t mean it isn’t stealing, still isn’t right. True artists reference, not copy.
I think for me as a client, the only time where I find copying understandable with no real changes is if the original artist is someone in a different country and you can't get tattooed by them, and even then try find an artist with a very similar style.
The main person I get tattooed by is all about me bringing in pictures of other tattoos and every time she redesigns it and I loved them even more.
That’s what I like to do, a lot of times I cant exactly articulate everything/detail I want.

Nora-ink has the cutest accent ! It makes me melt
I love the intros.
Imagine getting a really personal deeply meaningful tattoo and someone body copies it
Really odd to hear that artist say she doesn’t like when people send her a lot of references.
Idk that just sounded stuck up and I wouldn't want to get tatted by her
Oh dang, that wink at the end got me
It's fun to see how the intro got made lmao
It's so awkward 😹😹
This is hard especially as a new tattoer, ex: some people bring in work and they want that exactly, you can say "let me change it" but some won't want it. This is the hardest part as an artist where people limit creativity. You can switch a lot of things, but some people are stubborn and want what is already in the image. A lot of artist dislike it
Just here for sara fabel.

True 😊
As Picasso, once said “good artists copy, great artists steel.”
I really wanna know everyone's thoughts on ornamental tats, what makes a good dynamic of tats. Right now I'm hesitant to get some work done. I really don't wanna fuck up 🥲
3:14 is the only way I see this issue... if you're selling the exclusivity to your clients, you're ripping them off
hmmm i kinda fear that by saying "i feel flattered and respected" this stealing will get worse because the art thefts think they do something good. I don't want to say they have a wrong opinion but they should be careful with saying things like that because it's still stealing
"copy my work so I know it's good" lmao I'd say the same🤣🤣🤣
On Instagram recently I saw someone with a copy of one of Horitomo's monmon cats - and they tagged both Horitomo and the artist who copied it. That seemed pretty bold, but maybe they had permission?
AnthologyTattoos and the dog are literally adorable
I'm from Colombia and tattoo copycats is not well received. Almost all of the tattoo artist I know strive for their own original work and think the same about copycats as you do. I think the ones that copy and tag the original tattoo artist, only do it so they get "more advertisement" out of it because their own work doesn't.
@7:40 is such a good point, it’s very cultural

Jesus that alice tattoo was wack
I love how they framed this question. They couldn't just say "copying" because a lot of tattooers copy. Not use reference, they straight up, go to google, search, and copy. Whether it's photos, or illustrations, it's only a problem if it's a tattoo. I actually remember seeing someone on this channel complain about another tattooer using the same photo that they copied, lol.
