The best Skynyrd songs are the ones that were inspired by true life experiences of the band members. They had some hits that were written by others but those are usually forgotten because there just isn't the passion that Ronnie put into their signature ballads. I call them ballads because under all the great guitar, piano and drum work there lies a message and passion.

Shinedown has a cover where they just go ham on the vocals and it is awesome, but I prefer the original, because the vocals of the original better fit the theme of simplicity. But Shinedown's cover is very pleasing to the ears.

Skynyrd was and STILL is one of my favorite southern rock bands from Jacksonville Florida next to Blackfoot, 38 special, & Molly Hatchet.
Blackfoot's "Train" is a fun song, definitely worth a listen.

There's a somewhat similar Skynyrd song called "Every Mother's Son" that's powerful. It's more up tempo with a similar theme.
