Great reaction! Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of my all time favorite bands. My only suggestion would have been to watch the live version from Oakland Coliseum in 1977 or Knebworth in 1976. They are one of the few bands that were actually better live. The reason this song faded out at the end is because it was cut short. The live version is full length.

The one at Knebworth is better. It’s The Best to me. Listen to all the differences in guitars, bass and keys. Allen Collins jams way harder in that concert than at Oakland and we know he jammed hard in Oakland.

I agree the musicians really had to practice to the point of healed blisters getting blisters. When Lynyrd Skynyrd started out it took a long time to get anywhere. They had a whole album of material that was already recorded in Alabama. However they simply didn’t have the right contacts to get national recognition. I followed a band with equal talent that could make a crowd absolutely get enthusiastic and loved this band. However the label decided for whatever reason they didn’t meet their needs. So the label made their lives miserable by not backing them at all. This band played the East Coast and over to Texas so pretty much the south. Everywhere they played people loved them. They even opened for major rock bands that came to Florida. The band was called Stranger Band. I’ve seen them open for The Outlaws and Molly Hatchet. I’ve also seen them open for Triumph and Pat Travers. I must have seen this band 20-30 more times in bars that usually had a 3- 5 dollar cover to get in with a few drink minimum. One night they had already played a packed house full set. About 35-40 minutes later there was someone up on the stage who I thought looked like Greg Allman but the lights were too dim to tell. Slowly other guys came out and he sat at the keyboards and they cranked out whipping Post to the letter. Then he sat in on their songs and it was simply incredible. So I got to see Stranger Band featuring Greg Allman for $3 and a Long Island ice tea that I nursed because I didn’t want to drink and ruin the evening. But that’s how close some bands get to fame without going all the way. Lynyrd Skynyrd could have just been another bar band with really great songs but unlucky getting any major label backing. P.S. check out Swamp woman or Jackie’s so bad. They have a couple better songs IMO but those two are what the crowds always wanted to hear first.

I hate to break it to you buddy but every artist and or band has a ghost writer and or the studio they are signed to dictates what music they will do. When you sign that contract with them they own you. It isn’t just rap music that’s controlled rock and roll is also. Lynyrd Skynyrd is talented but they don’t write their own music nobody does.

    • @rxlxviii
      @rxlxviii Год назад +3

The history behind Free Bird is truly amazing . The band was recording it at the famed Muscle Shoals recording studio , mentioned in Sweet Home Alabama, and went for a lunch break. one of their roadies sat down and started to play a piano ballad from his head for the song. one of the studio engineers heard it, and was so blown away he recorded it.
The roadies name was Billie Powell, unknown to the band was a classically trained pianist. He became the band’ piano player, and that was history.

Welcome to Skynyrd. All of the songs that they perform that are written by the band members have meaning and usually come from life experience. Ronnie VanZant the lead singer and leader of the band was once asked about the songs being on paper. His reply was, if it doesn't mean enough to be remembered it isn't worth singing. Some of the finest rock guitar solo work ever recorded I think and the intensity, it builds and builds and you think it's peaked, then it goes even higher, and then even higher after that! Phenomenal! Most bands were lucky to have just one good lead guitarist, this band had three, so on a lot of their songs, not just this one, it was just one superb guitar lick after another.

The Lynyrd Skynyrd band was the first Southern Rock bands to use three lead quality guitarist one bass one drummer one keyboardists and one lead singer. The first lead on the slid guitarist is Gary Rossington the second lead who played the lead solo in Free Bird was Allen Collins and the third lead who punched the backup lead with Allen Collins was Steve Gaines who took over for Ed King who left Skynyrd in 1975, on bass was Leon Wilkinson, keyboard was Billy Powell and drummer was Artimus Pyle who took Bob Burns place when he left the band in the early part of 1974 because he could not handle the pressure of being on the road. And Ronnie VanZant on lead vocals. Ronnie VanZant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines were killed in she October 1977 plane crash. Ronnie VanZant baby brother Johnny VanZant took the lead vocal later to bring back Lynyrd Skynyrd, the last album was called Last of a Dying Breed and in my eyes and ears was Skynyrd with Johnny at lead best album and you really need to check it out. I'm 64 and know just about anything you want to know about Skynyrd.

Perfect selection on your part! There are only a handful of songs which are perfect, and this is one of them. Ronnie's vocals, Allen and Gary's guitar work, and perfectly understated drumming by Bob Burns. Guitar World listed this as #8 of the best guitar solos of all time; but for me it's number one, no question. Absolutely one of my essential six songs I would have to have on a deserted island. Your problem after this, of course, is finding any other song that comes close. Stairway to Heaven is at least in the same league. Give that a try. All good wishes!

Great reaction. 1st time seeing you two. WOW what a chemistry. Fan for sure. Unless one of your ego's make you stray, you two are a perfect couple. Stay humble, appreciate each other and be the example of YRUE LOVE!!!!!! PLEASE don't put yourself first or it will never work. Old school values. That work, except for the modern woman of today.

LS and the Allman Brothers were domestic Southern rock alternative to British Invasion rock of the era. They nailed it here.

As a rock guitarist in both the north and south of the country for the last 50 years I can tell youThere isn't a nightclub I play in that I don't hear, "Play Free Bird!" at least once a night. Since I am from Texas, as a good Southern Boy I have no problem with that! New Sub.

When I was in the Army in the 80s, the brothers would play R & B and detail their cars. We’d put on Skynyrd and blast it from our stereo in the barracks and drown them out! Ha ha

Got it right the first time. Lin-erd Skin-erd. 70's Southern Rock icons. Now imagine an entire concert with several thousand like-minded fans rockin', and have Freebird as the finale, which it traditionally is. And the fade-out isn't how it ends in the show. You should seek out the live concert version.

Southern Rock at it’s finest…..ranked in most polls as the number 2 best song of all time behind Led Zeppelin’s “ Stairway to Heaven”.

Another song from that era was a song by the Outlaws, called, "Green Grass and High Tides!" Somewhat similar. You guys reacted the way that I did the first time that I first heard FREE BIRD, back in the 1970's.

First time viewer here. Loved y'all's reaction.
Total abandon in reacting to one of the most iconic R&R songs ever produced. I was a teen when this first came out. Took us rock and roll kids by storm.
Throughout the 70's, it was every year or so that a song or two would come out that ended up becoming iconic. Free Bird is one of them. As many have commented, the Oakland live version is as good as, if not a little better than the studio version.
That is a rare event when a live version is better than the original studio version.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is an amazing band. Loads of excellent songs.
You two are a kick to watch. Looking forward to watching more of y'all's videos.
Oh -- keep going crazy . Some of us out here are losing it right along with you.

Simple Man, What’s Your Name, Gimme Three Steps, I Know A Little, Call Me the Breeze, Ballad of Curtis Loew, Don’t Ask Me No Questions, and Sweet Home Alabama. Any of those are great songs to continue your Skynyrd journey with.
