    The important thing in using this method is that the pencil you use to trace the back of the design has soft lead, the color only matters in relation to the color of of the fabric

      it should work on any type. The weave of the fabric can affect the crispness and clarity of the details, tight weave, good detail, spongy fabric or loose weave, no as much detail

    what was in that bottle you used to wipe the paper??

    • @debralwelty
      @debralwelty  7 лет назад +14

      I am just using a bottle of fabric paint because it is handy and it has a smooth firm bottom. Some people use a credit card to pull across the surface. I find that the bottom of a paint bottle with the rounded edges will not tear the tracing, where as if you would happen to push too hard with the credit card it could. Hope this helps

      Sorry, didn't see you question until today, the technique shown here should work. Although how much nap does the tea towel have? That could be difficult no matter what method you use. You might need to use the "pink" iron on pencil which would be available at JoAnn Fabric's

    • @debralwelty
      @debralwelty  3 года назад +2

      Try ironing freezer paper to the shirt to keep the neck from moving. You can use any paint you want, but I have no idea of the results. Some paint dries stiff and fades when washed. You can try other pencils, they may or may not show up and they may also bleed into the painting. Does this help?

    • @debralwelty
      @debralwelty  7 лет назад +3

      Yes, as stated in the video I use a "Generals" 6B charcoal pencil for light value fabrics and the Generals White charcoal pencil for dark value fabrics. These are regular drawing pencils available from an art supply store. I found that the Generals brand works better than other brands. The tracing paper does not matter as long as it is transparent.

    Can we use an iron to press the design onto the shirt?

    • @debralwelty
      @debralwelty  3 года назад +2

      not with this method. You can trace the design onto tracing paper as shown here but then you would need to use a special pencil available at a fabric store, they used to be called a pink pencil, if you trace the back of the design with that, you can then iron it on

    • @debralwelty
      @debralwelty  5 лет назад +1

      They have an odor and they may bleed when laundered, so I don't recommend them. However you can use them to trace your pattern onto tracing paper, it might smear because it doesn't dry as quickly if you happen to drag your hand across it before it is dry

      The pencil is a very soft lead and yes, it does break easily. Try applying less pressure when you are outlining. Also, take care never to drop the pencil as the lead will break inside the pencil. You could try a 4B charcoal pencil. I did not find that graphite pencils work very well

    • @debralwelty

      In the video I show black fabric, I traced the back of the pattern, which was first traced onto tracing paper, with a white charcoal pencil, you can also use white chalk but the lines will not be as fine. All other instructions on the video are the same regardless of the color of fabric. The video looks rather pale for the black transfer, sorry about that, it really does show up quite well on black. I have another video of a white rose on black, you can see it on that one
