    You should come up here to Wollongong and sit at the bottom of Mt Ousley when the Illawarra Convoy is on, it's such a Buzzzzzzz

    Back in the late 60's to mid 70's, the excitement for the race out on the Hume, didn't start till the Overnight beasts were let loose from their cages, high powered trucks, not semis, ranging from 16' to 29' bodies, carrying only around, a couple of ton, to generally no more than about 8 ton, these trucks were speed demons, they were single, or twin steer, single or bogie drive, the Grey ghosts, from Kwikasair and Comet, Ipec had their MAN trucks, twin steer, single steer, single drives, which were common with certain other Overnight companies at the time.. there was also the famous Hawthorn taxi trucks, with the Hawthorn footy colors, brown and yellow, they used 5 ton Dodge and Ford V8 petrol trucks, I've never seen one in a LONG time, they generally carried very light loads, and also were very quick, they.. were the GTs of the trucking industry at the time, one could tell, that they were coming up behind you, by their voices getting louder and louder over the CB radio, they were the fun days, when a petrol truck had a smash, there generally was nothing left, because they caught on fire, these trucks, generally sat on 70 PLUS mph, 90 was nothing unusual for them.. for me, they were the best, and most exciting days... 🙂🙂

      Thank you for sharing. It’s a time in the industry I wish I knew more about. Luckily Bruce and the crew at “copy southbound” podcast are getting the old guys on and telling these stories. Stories of a harder time when the Hume was dirt, the trucks were fast and loose and so were the drivers. It really is a completely different world of trucking now. I’ve had my eye on a 1976 ford Louisville body truck with a 477 in it. Very clean truck with a horse box put on the back lol. But at one point it was put on gas and that system is now out of date and I know a lot of mechanics won’t touch it now. So I’m hesitant to even go look at it.

      @@Brad_The_Truckie Your welcome.. I'm sure that it was Beckelys transport, that used a lot of petrol, and gas powered Fords back in the days, both the F series and Louisvilles, it might pay to ask them?? good luck in your search.. 🙂

      18:36 sees Bruce and Geoff Gunter in their Diamond T Model 634 with a 4-71 Detroit and 13 speed - the Freighter spread axle flat top trailer was purchased by Bruce from Sunny Warby

    Bugger my undies, I am on my final week of holidays and got a Sony a7iv with a top notch lense on her and would of loved to have known about this!!!!!!!! I would of pulled up and taken snaps.

      Ha ha right? I don’t know how it can be marketed so we’d know about it. It’s obviously made known through different media. I only found it after a google search and a post in big rigs

      Yeah I was completely surprised to see others out I thought I’d be alone. There would have been over 100 at the pub watching. Probably the best spot, with a beer in hand lol

      Comfort level has increased dramatically though so you go home far less fatigued.

      @@tkx86very true. The industry is very different now. A driver will refuse to take a truck if the ac isn’t working. Have we got soft, yeah probably. But I bet if the old guys had thier chance again they’d go for the comfort of new trucks
