      Yeah because beginer horses are usally lazy and chill so you learn how to be strict with them and show them who’s boss! But as you get more experienced you get the more cheeky speedy horses!

    How long is the lesson, from tacking up to back to barn and what is the cost per lesson? (

    • @lonestarwoman
      @lonestarwoman  2 года назад

      Most lessons start at 2 hours for tacking, groundwork and riding.
      Once a student is comfortable with all the basics and everything is faster And lessons are per hour.

    • @ajsmith890
      @ajsmith890 2 года назад

      @@lonestarwoman Do you mind me asking what you charge per hour? I ask because we are beginning our small business and locally the lessons are 30 min, $65 for that. But no husbandry… the horse is tacked up to begin with so the student goes directly to the saddle for 30 min

    • @lonestarwoman
      @lonestarwoman  2 года назад

      I run my business a little different.
      I believe in one or two people at a time and spending time on proper handling of any horse.
      My rate has gone up, but I try and keep it accessible at. $55 per hour.

    I have a question: is it possible for any typical kid to mount a horse unassisted? I'm asking because I am writing a novel with a main character who is 6-8 years old and they are traveling by themselves but with a horse and I currently write that the character taps the horses knees to get the animal to kneel before he mounts the horse. The horse has a saddle and is well trained. Would it be possible for a child of this size but with equestrian skill to be able to freely ride a horse without needing an assistant to boost them up?

    • @lonestarwoman
      @lonestarwoman  3 года назад +1

      Climbing up into the saddle when you are that small can be done, but it's hard and if the horse moves it can be a rodeo.
      When I was that age, I simply lured the horse over to a fence or a tree with a carrot or clump of grass, then climbed up the fence and slid on. This method served me well over the years.
      Now a days we use a mounting block and we mounting block train all the horses. More feasible then getting them to lay down to mount. That takes a really long time to teach and is really hard on the horses back and knees.
      Here's some Mounting training vids for ya to check out.

      Just FYI, you would not leave a saddle on a horse. And putting a saddle on when you are that small takes a lot of effort and it is very difficult to get it tight.
      Western saddles are much heavier than English saddles.
      The kiddos have to stand on a stool to throw a saddle over a horse's back to get tall enough to even get it over.

      @@lonestarwoman oh wow, thanks for getting back so quick.
      I didn't know that kneeling was hard on a horse. Is it just the horses own weight is hard on the joints?
      Despite the novel being sci fi/fantasy I'm trying to be closeish to reality. Like I heard that horses can only travel 20-30 miles in a day before they need to be changed out for a new set (like with teams that pull carriages). So I got the main character trotting his way across the south doing about 25 miles per day. I should probably add that he grooms the horse when he camps. I'm kinda using the fact that this horse is the best of the best, the lamborghini of horses if you will, to explain how this is possible. And I guess I'm kinda ignoring other threats to horses like snakes, bears, big cats ect...
      This other author once said that they don't out horses in their books because many people will know if you mess up a fact. But alas it is difficult to set a story in the 19th century and exclude all equine.

      @@lonestarwoman what would be the consequence of leaving a saddle on a horse for an extended period of time?

    • @lonestarwoman
      @lonestarwoman  3 года назад

      You honestly would never leave a saddle on for more than a 10 hour. Of time. Because sweat and dust builds up underneath the saddle pad and will rub against the horses back and cause soreness and pain. The saddle should be removed every day and the horse should be cleaned underneath a saddle pad that has been used for an extended. Of time. Brushing the horse off and letting them take a good roll in the grass helps them reset their spines. It would be the equivalent of you wearing a backpack for an extended. Of time. He'd want to take it off and get all the sweat nasty out from underneath have a break.

    As a parent who’s 11 year old wants a horse, this freaks me out.
    The horse knows who’s a child with low confidence compared to an adult 😢

    • @lonestarwoman
      @lonestarwoman  3 года назад

      Yes horses do know who to test. That is why having a good instructor to help guide a rider towards confidence and control is essential. I have worked with so many who start off mousy and become confident and strong riders. Horses don't change, people have to.
      Its called growth.

      Good for you! spend on lessons, don't buy the horse. It takes years and not months.
      Remember every horse and human are different. Find a good trainer that pushes your child to find their confidence. It takes time, but the result is a young adult that can control a 1000 lb horse can grow into an adult that is confident and successful:)
