Today Wooly will review the JS Monsta 2020 in the HYFI construction and also compare the differences between EPOXY and standard PU constructions. We put this board through its paces in all different wave types to show the capabilities and what you can do on both constructions and where each construction will have the edge over each other.

Its interesting I seen a interview with Jon Pyzel his opinion is eps only seem to float more because they are lighter in weight so basically if you have a pu and a eps exact same weight they'll float identical . So the pros boards are generally glassed light so no real difference for them and we need to get out that eps boards are actually worse for the environment because the foam last for a bloody long time before it breaks where pu breaks down a lot faster.

Gee you looked good on the Monsta 2020. Your PU Monsta 2020 review was your best surfing last year but the surfing on the Hyfi was very very good. You’ve got a Monsta in you Wooly you just connect with that board.
Too kind! I do like the Monsta in the Easy Rider DIMs, really suits my style of surfing.
Great clips and great explanation. For me, I'm finding I prefer eps boards in cleaner conditions and less wind, and I'll go for pu in windier/choppy conditions as the pu sits down better due to weight

Great content. Totally agree. What about the PU blank with Epoxy resin that JS are now using. ... That's how I make them as a back yard shaper for the factors of PU blanks easy to shape but epoxy resin less toxic and far superior mevahhiccally for durability. To me they have some of the damping of a PU poly and some of the pop and durability of an epoxy so a bit of both but I can't make them anywhere near as light and flexible as JS would so would love to know how their PU Epoxys go. Thanks mate. I havent ridden a PU/Epoxy from JS havent had many of these in Oz, they seem to make these for other parts of the world but not us. When I was talking to them recently they said we will have some coming into Oz at a later date.
I have ridden a couple that a friend shaped me and they surfed really well but that was many years ago.

Hi mate, Im planning to do one!
Also not sure if it's true but I believe JS tweak the EPS versions of the board so they feel the same so that rider can just use their normal dims which I think it great. Weights are fairly close on both to which I also like. Boards can be too light in my opinion.
Yes, I think the pull the top edge off the rails just to get them to sink a little easier. Its only very subtle and I cant really tell much of a difference when I pick them up.
Wooly you should take up shaping! You know so much about what makes boards work and you have felt up so many boards you guaranteed would have the feel.
Ha ha yeah I have shaped approx 120 boards over the past 30 years. been about 5 years since I got foam dust on me though....

legend, love the reviews they've helped me a lot. I'm thinking of buying a Monsta Box hifi in the next couple of days. I surf around torquay area and towards fair haven like spouts creek. waves range between 1-4ft, what do you think on the decision of getting an epoxy in the Monsta Box for these conditions? Great review again in the uk we mainly surf waves between hip and a foot overhead in windy conditions. Would you recommend the pu?
I would think the EPS would be a better option for waves like you have.
Hey Wooly, you looked pretty good surfing the EPS on those heavy barrels!! Just sayin’
He was ripping. I though his PU clip last year was his best but this was very close to some of his best surfing.
Yeah I normally would not ride the EPS in those waves and was surprised and how well it handled. Its a pretty sick wave and as long as you can make the drop you could ride a door out there!

Really enjoying your reviews! You mention to ride a stiff fin in the HIFI smaller days or PU bigger days and your choice is something with the rake of a performer (medium rake). Do you think a FCS Performance Core would be stiff enough? Or would the Monsta 2020 in HIFI need a PCC or even a PG for someone around your weight 90kg-95kg? Also, how do you think that specifically the Monsta 2020 would perform with a more upright fin (reactor family) or more raked fin (JS fin, carver family)? I am about to order a M20 and it would be awesome to have some of your intell Wooly.
Hi mate. I would def go a PCC. Template really depends on what you like. I didn’t like the medium JS in that particular board. I found it too loose for my liking. I seem to always go back to the Performer series as it seems to work in a wide variety of conditions but it’s really up to personal preference. So many people love the MF fin but it doesn’t suit me!
@@WoolyTV cheers mate, I hear ya. One other question, do you feel the HIFI construction is more suited to light to medium weighted surfers? I have never surfed HIFI but get the feeling it might not suit a more solid surfer (90-95kg). I could be wrong, so it would be good to hear your take. Cheers
@@video1critic hi mate. I have no problem with them and I’m 90ish! They actually feel very lively in small surf - a feeling I don’t often get from PU in small junky waves.

Hey Wooly. G'day from NZ bro. Would age replace weight in terms of litres in the Monsta 2020? I'm 57 years, fit, but only weigh in at about 67kg suited up. Looking at getting a second hand near new 6.0 33L. For my good wave board. For our local I mostly ride a 5'8 flat fish Quad. Trying to find a board that makes the transition from the fish a little easier when the waves are fast and hollow. Cheers
PS. One day I rode two different boards with too much volume for my weight and they were more maneuverable but sluggish. So slow off the bottom compared to my fish.

Was a while ago now but I would have thought the Futures Legacy Neutral in a medium. In the HYFI I was probably using the Ando Blackstix when it was small.

But JS made it even more difficult...what about the PE construction ? (because down in Portugal we have received some Ranging Bull boards in PE...which I wonder how it behaves (closer to PU or closer to epoxy???) THANKS
I havent ridden the PE (PU/Epoxy) as we don't get those in Oz but they would feel more like a PU as they have the PU blank with the timber stringer.
The PE is lighter as the PU, but gets dents a lot quicker!
The new Hifly 2 is really good! Much better, stronger and lighter then lost light speed construction! I like it a lot even in onshore conditions but I find it hard to surf when offshore gets strong. Then it feels like riding a bicycle with no suspension down a dirt road.
..and PU is made in Australia 🇦🇺, PE is made in Thailand 🇹🇭 if I am not mistaken.
@@MarcRademacher thanks . How would you compare it with the SpineTek from CI. I have 2 (NB2 and NB3) and it works quite well (not so good in on-shoe) ?
@@josesnowsneves5132 sorry, I never surfed a ci, yet! But if you buy a ci in Europe it probably comes from the Pukas, Olatu factory! So far every PU board I got from the pukas factory came with poor glas jobs. Had a few …lost boards from pukas. JS PU boards have are much stronger boards (makes it much easier to resell them after 1-2 years)
@@MarcRademacher Hi Marc, yes CIs are being produced at Pukas, Indeed you are correct, Lost glassing is not good, however the CI glassing is much better (do not ask me what but I had problems with 2 Lost boards, and, so far, no issues with the 2 CIs I am currently using. Thanks

PU if in solid waves, EPS for more gutless waves 🤙

@@RBNK157 shoulder high and up. Or really punchy small waves. If the waves are weak the EPS will win.
@@WoolyTV i have a neck beard2 spine tek and usually surf only up to head high 5-6ft so that’s why I’m debating whether i should get a pu or eps 😅

Whats the difference between JS PE and their HYFI?

PE is a PU blank glassed in epoxy resin. HYFI is an EPS blank with epoxy resin, enegra cloth and carbon fire.
If you have a look at the JS site you can see all the details.

Not that one. It’s was polyester

Really helpful review I’m tossing up between the 2, I surf around chest to overhead waves and want to know if the Hyfi board handles any chop at all due to its lightness, I’ve heard it’s got huge chatter in any type of chop?
Hi mate, I rode a new HYFI 2.0 in an onshore day last week and it went really well. I didn't feel any chatter at all.
