Just a quick message to the Surf n Show Community, or to anyone who's thinking of buying Monstabox Hyfi.
It's funny because just the other day, I was surfing knee to waist high beachies on my foamy longboard but I also switched onto my OG Monsta box in hyfi. I was really surprised how fast it went even through flat sections. The waves weren't too steep and I found my self being able to generate tons of speed and do fairly good turns in consideration to the waves. You said in this episode that the OG and 2020 Monsta boxes couldn't surf 1-3 foot waves properly due to it hating flat sections, but I found the OG Monsta Box did quite the opposite! I haven't really tested my OG MB in the 5 foot range yet so maybe it's more suited to smaller waves. 🤷🏼♂️
Your vids make my day.keep it up !!!
I'm only missing when you used to go deep in the specs of the board like concave, rocker, rails, etc. Anyway thanks for the great video!
Yeah totally, I was gonna comment that, but since someone else already did I take the oportunity to agree. That's the thing I really love about your reviews, you go so deep and technical into the boards specs and that really sets you appart from others. So I think that in this review you focused too much on the fins (which is a great and a necessary subject, don't take me wrong) but not enough on the board itself. But nice video nontheless, thank you!!
I second this! The in depth specs were my favorite part of these reviews
I ride a lot of js boards here in Australia. You couldn’t be more right about the board hating flat sections. Even on a 3-4ft day you have to keep the board in the pocket. Any flat section and I just kick out. I think it’s a trait of all JS’s. but in a bowl I wouldn’t prefer anything else. I’ve found the reactor fin carbon is really good in a beachie and will definitely throw in a raked fun like the Julian set if I’m surfing a down the line wave.
Thanks for posting your experiences. It helps many...
I've got a 5'7" Psycho Nitro in HyFi that works really well when the waves get a bit mushy/flat. Great little board for SoCal. Way more fun and speed than JS's hybrid boards like the MonstaBox or BlakBox IMO. When the waves are steeper I'd rather get on the Monsta than compromise on a MB or BB.
Adrian Jebef Trying to get a couple Psycho Nitros
@@adrianjebef9950 absolutely, most of the waves in this edit would be better suited for the BB3 or Psycho. I have all three and the Monsta excels in clean, steep, fun and fast days...when its really cooking! Not grinding it out.
the blak box 3 os perfect for flat sections
Same Thing, weird board to dial In since new.. went with FCS II AM Twins plus 1 ...and Finally got it right !!!! Night and Day difference !.. otherwise sluggish, felt longer, and super tight to turn on any wave smaller than overhead.... Thanks Noel !! Keep up The Pro Insight reviews !
I have owned a couple of iterations of this board and currently have as a round tail. I only use it for minimum 4 foot plus, as you rightly said it needs a wave with push and power to get anything out of the board. I actually use a CI Rocket Wide for 2-4 foot and that thing is fantastic.
I love the AM and the JS fins with the Monsta Box best. Fast drivey fins that match the board well. I agree that the new 2020 model has more rocker and isn't as fast or daily driver feeling as the earlier model. More performancey for sure. My Pyzel Phantom EPS is edging it out this season for me.
You pointed out all the issues I've had with my JS experience of Black Box 2 and Monsta Box. Too much foam under the chest, not enough foam under the backfoot. This is a great distribution for pros riding perfect powerful surf, but a complete disaster for average surfers on average waves. It looked like you had the footage at 3/4 speed and it was clear you couldn't drive off your back foot like you normally do; you were really nursing your turns on open face turns, being really upright vs being able to lean into them.
This is actually a struggle I've faced over the last decade in general with modern day short boards. Growing up surfing longboards in the summer and shortboards in the winter, I tend to be upright and put most my weight on my backfoot for bottom turns and cutbacks and these new designs are not built for that. I've actually had to start asking shapers to add an 1/8 of an inch of foam at the 12 inch mark of the tail to fix this and then the boards become speed demons again. I've also noticed that pros are so fast in general, they need a board that slightly drags to keep themselves in the pocket, something 99.9% of us will never need to worry about, haha.
Hydroshort stock actually has decent foam under backfoot, but no other boards so far, stock, have worked for me. But that nose really throw off the weight distribution for me and until I'm actually up riding, it never feels comfortable.
Great vid, keep it up!
P.S. The guys at my local LA shop say the Monsta Box should only be used as a "good wave" board. Sounds like you had the same experience with it.
GeniusUnleashed Yup... it’s a good wave board.
Chilli surfboard seem to have a bit more foam under the back foot. Have a look you may be pleasantly surprised 👍
@@-3590- I'll give them a look. Thanks!
What about the fat man dims? Would that be a resolve?
@@aaron-dm2bw Those don't change where the volume is located, but yeah, they help a little. Still too little foam under the back foot of most boards.
I’ve gotta say your surfing looked really good on this board, I like the way it loves the 180 full wraps. I have one except in the Easy Rider dims and love this board even in the smaller stuff like 3-4ft because it’s easy to catch waves but still versatile enough to do tight arcs like a standard shortboard. I think this design rides better with the extra volume and planning area, plus being able to ride it shorter in the easy rider dims. Seems to keep it alive in the weak sections. Never ridden the standard dims but could guess it would be closer to a high-performance short board. Definitely agree to use a raked fin with the medium exit rocker. Some great info on fins.
Thanks for the honest reviews Noel ! I hate how some ppl say all boards rip buy it now from our shop
I called it ;)
Glad to hear how my impression on the board was also picked up by you. I mainly surf punchy beachbreaks, so works amazing as my DD
You are 100% correct on the fins for this board. I really didn't like it at all until I used the AM2 Tech Flex fins which have more rake and now it's my favorite board. I went with the Easy Rider dims after seeing that it has a wider nose profile than the stock model and glad that I did. Here in Hawaii 2-3 foot waves have some punch so it's pretty much my "go to" board for over here. I was saddened to hear they discontinued it and is now being replaced by the Xero which is unavailable with a roundtail in HyFi. I'd be very interested to see you do a review comparing the MB 2020 & Xero.
Aloha
I’m sorry to say that the folks at JS are not sending in boards for review. Sorry I tried to get the Xero and Sub Xero
Great review, interesting to see different aspects of the board. we learn a lot about shape and fins. thanks, you are the best Noel.
For me best setup with this monsta box 2020 kolohe andino fins especially all around surf , but the board feel like still need good waves. Squash tail 5.7 18 5/8 2 1/4 v 24.9 🙌
In my opinion his PU boards go better.
His hyfi construction is designed for strength and to replicate PU not to be a pure light weight EPS board. Next JS your order do yourself a
Favour and just get a PU. His PU monsta box and now xero and Xero gravity goes amazing. I’ve had both and ended up selling the hyfi after only a few surfs
Hey how the Xero gravety please?
@@soulsurfer3102 I own the Xero and monsta. And have ridden my mates Xero gravity that was a touch small for me. And it went great. So great that I’m going to be buying one real soon.
It’s just like a. Xero but with a touch more hold and feels little more knifey. I think it will be my go to board for 90% of my surfs on the east coast. And the Xero feels amazing in small waves 1-3ft but once it gets ahit bigger or more push to it it does get skatey . I think the gravity will be the perfect blend so I’m not forced to go to my monsta is average conditions
@@soulsurfer3102 it feels quite Similar to the monsta-box maybe a touch more high performance….
THE NEW 2020 MB HAS MORE NOSE AND TAIL ROCKER. MUCH CLOSER TO THE MOSTA 8 THAN BEFORE. THE OLD MB IS MUCH MORE FUN TO RIDE IN MY OPINION.
Im a die hard Monsta Box rider for years, and the last model was faster and more of a daily driver for sure. The MB 2020 sits in between the Monsta and old M-box. Agreed
flowing super well. Ripping! looked like you gelled real nice with that board
I really liked this honestly and detailed review I have a 6'4 swallowtail MonstaBox and I totally agree....feels surprisingky sluggish and slow and needs powerful waves .... I have tried different fin combos but think its more the board
Good honest review mate .. 👍👍👍
nice review noel. im not in the market for a new board since im waiting on my pyzalien 2 but i still get a kick out of your reviews.
How do you like your Pyzel? I’m riding the Pyzalien 2 as my step up board for 6’ + waves and loving it with the FCS H4 fins.
lol! good to see the old dog through the reverse!
Great review Noel! I had the monstabox last year and had the same feeling in average/daily conditions in the east coast of Australia, so good to read the comments and see I am not alone. JS sells the board as all-rounder but in my opinion it is not. I sold the board after a few months.
u tried the blackbox 3 ? i found the same with the monstabox
@@poppiiiii I haven't but I am considering to give it a go as it looks more all rounder. Have you tried it?
@@magicbullet81 i got an issue with my monstabox, manufacturing issue with the fin box, JS offered me to get another one, I surfed the monstabox for 2 months and decided to return it cause i couldnt change fins actually, I chose the BB3, coming in next week.
Would love to see more reviews with the H4 fins. I’m riding the medium H4’s on a Pyzalien 2 Swallow tail and I love it for those bigger punchy days. Recently dropped in on a hollow solid 7’ left with that set up and the hold and drive on my bottom turns was unreal. All that energy was transferred up to the lip where I just carved off the top. It was an epic wave and a really good test for those fins. Would be Interested to see how they perform on other boards 🤙🏾
favorite board. this is the most closed out i’ve ever seen lowers 😂
Keep up the informative reviews Noel! Greetings from Portugal! That board looks a bit slow in your first two segments. When you tested with the Kohloe fins, it appeared you had more drive and a speed increase but definitely not as much with other designs I've seen you ride. When I go back and look at your review of the Slater Cymatic and Sci Fi 2.0, it looks like you have a ton more speed and flow. I had considered purchasing the Monster box but I think I'll stick to the SciFi 2.0 as my next purchase because it better enhances my surf style in Portugal. I have the Cymatic and Omni. I ride the Cymatic the most.
I had the previous Monsta Box in Hyfi. Was a fun board but I think I agree about it not being the fastest board. Also had the Cymatic and it was fast, but also about 1L above my regular volume, because Firewire sizing is static, so I had to order up. Curious about the 2.0 as well
I feel like this board in the easy rider dims would have changed the review significantly
Hi Noel. Interested why JS didn’t send the stock 4oz PU? They go insane. two HIFI’s with different tails seems like a wasted opportunity. Missed the discussion on dims. I found the 2020 feels faster than the OG, and is a great daily driver imo, but yea agree - looked poor in mixed up trestles. Love you’re reviews 🤙
They didn't any PU/Poly's to give me for this review. I grabbed these two off the rack and I get a bunch of questions to which one would go better.... Swallow Tail or Squash. Cheers
Was thinking bout getting the mb2020 as a daily driver type board and waiting for an honest review on it, thank you Noel!! 🙏🏼 Thinking back: What would be the standout board you tested in this category?
Peter De Vries Daily Driver models head over to our website to see my Favorites in this category at www.surfnshow.com. Boards that come to mind are the Pyzalien 2, NB2, Phantom, and The Medina Model by Cabianca is blowing my mind too. That review drops in a few weeks.
Thanks for the ideas, will have a closer look. Great reviews man, keep it up!
After trying many I landed on the Pyzel fcs2 for the mbox. Other fins I liked Fanning, Merrick but not as good as Pyzel.
The KA's looked sick
Love all the surfing in ur vids
Another top review!! On the KA's the speed and flow was different level to the others. Would like to see your turns on the medium KA's. Prob less drive but super whippy!! :) What kind of waves/board would suit the H4s? Looks like a very tight fin
djconeuk Not sure in best wave types for the H4 Fins. I have only tested them in the MB 2020 at the point breaks so far. More board and fin testing coming on these H4’s... stay tuned.
Hey Noel, Thank you for another in-depth review!!!! I think the last monsta box review you did 3 years ago was on a 26.5l board (eg. 1 litre more) do you think this had an influence on your performance. It's interesting because your last MB review was really really positive, surely they haven't changed the board that much - right? Cheers mate.
The OG MB review I did 3 years ago I weighed 170 lbs (10 pounds heavier) that's why I was riding the 5'9". You don't have to do much with rocker to change the way a board rides.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 thanks for your reply. sounds like they might need to revert back to the original design... perhaps JS might take your review and others onboard.
Thanks for another great review, Noel. How do you compare this surfboard to the OG Flyer and which one do you prefer? Thanks!
OG Flyer is a bit more user friendly and a bit faster down the line. The MB 2020 will out perform the OG Flyer in the pocket though.
what about the monsta 2020
Awesome review as always! How did this board compare to the original Monsta Box?
curious about this as well
Alexander Carvalho Tue OG MB carries more speed down the line and goes good in 3-5’ surf. This MB 2020 has more hold or traction through turns due to more tail rocker. More tail rocker gives the MB 2020 a better wave range of 3-6’ surf but what you gain in traction and drive through turns you loose in get up go down the line speed.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Epic thank you!
Gday Mate do you prefer Air 17X over MB2020 for down the line speed ?
Slaughter Yard Yes... I think the Air17X is epic. Faster and more high performance
Noel - incredible reviews and such a good RUclips page man! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. I'm looking for a new daily driver - considering a JS Monsta Box, Pyzel Phantom, and HS White Noiz. Currently have a JS Psycho Nitro (Hyfi) groveler that I love, so Monsta Box is tempting, but based on your reviews, seems like you liked the Phantom and White Noiz a bit more?
I'm an intermediate / decent 26 yo surfer and live in San Diego - surf mostly decently punchy beach breaks (blacks, scripps) and reefs in La Jolla. What would you recommend?
Cheers!
I like the Phantom best… it’s easier to shred, paddles better, and Carrie’s more speed compared to the other sleds you mentioned
@@surfnshowreviews7777 you da man, thanks Noel
Hey Noel.
Stick between two boards. Which will be the better choice for daily performance board JS Monsta Box 2020 or Pyzels Phantom.
Thanks für help Buddy.
Noel says in this video that it's not an one board quiver, so you shouldn't choose the MB2020 if you are looking for a daily driver, as I understood.
Noel whats your favorite "one board quiver". I surf mostly 2-5 ft waves but I want a board that will still hold it together when its pumping. Big big fan of the reviews keep shredding
Luca Robinson Pyzalien 2 is mental in 2-8’
My experience of JS boards are that they are amazing in good waves but bad in average waves. These boards are designed to rip in the powerful Gold Coast points and not the weak mushy waves of California.
I agree. I think Noel surfed it great considering the wave. If I had an unlimited quiver of JS boards to surf a mushy point, I would go the Blak box at the upper limit. The website says it's for 2-6ft surf and what we call a 2ft wave is verrrrry different to a Cali 2ft wave, I guess we halve the size, 2ft AUS == 4ft US, 6ft AUS == 12ft US. It's dumb but it is what it is. In fact, you can watch the WSL event that was just on (ruclips.net/video/Nx6P-rqFt2g/видео.html&ab_channel=WorldSurfLeague) and it was 6ft and people were getting nailed, boards snapping and the women didn't even surf in the same place as the men.
If you watch promo footage from JS, mostly it's at d'bah and that is not a mushy wave. Even the points here on the GC get hollow and powerful.
That said, I picked up a 2019 monsta box hyfi 2nd hand yesterday based on his opinion as opposed to the 2020. I still have nightmares about a skinny banana shaped potato chip surfboard I had. Less rocker is better than more for me, as long as it's enough.
@@neal4601 all u say is true.sorry but n.salas first time not look good with this board
Another great review Noel! Are you going to be testing out the new Firewire Glazer surfboard soon?
connor anderson Yes... waiting for boards.... hopefully soon
Noel what board were you riding a couple weeks ago when lowers was firing all week?
ygoeb13 The Medina by Cabianca out of Spain. Board goes mental
Surf n Show Reviews will you be doing a review on that board?
Lucky One Yes... review will drop in a few weeks
You said, in 2ft surf... Go with the Black Baron twin fin. Just wondering about your thoughts on what the FishBeard twin fin. (Since you like it a bunch...) Would you give the same recommendation in 2ft surf for the FIshBeard or nah???
Hi Shannon. I'm no twin fin expert, but I do have the CI Fishbeard. I have never surfed the Black Baron, but I am considering getting one. There is a really good surfer at my local beachbreak that surfs the Fishbeard really well and he saw me surfing mine one day on a small mushy day and started talking to me. He asked me how i liked my Fishbeard, but I told him I wasn't really sure yet as I was trying to figure it out. He mentioned the board doesn't like small mushy waves and it needs some punch. I was back out at the same break on a low tide chest high day that was barreling. I found the sweet spot on the Fishbeard riding the CI EN fins and it was working insane. The guy was out that day and paddled up to me and said, "that's what I'm talking about, see." The surf can be small as long as it has some punch. I love this thing. That's my perspective. Good luck in your choice.
I have been riding my Spinetek Fishbeard in 2-3' choppy soft conditions and it's going great. It has better performance in the pocket compared to the BB but I think the BB will paddle a little better.
How does it compare with the original Monstabox hyfi you reviewed way back in 2017? Is the board very different or have your tastes just changed? I love the original but can't decide if the 2020 is going to be as good.
David Bannochie The OG MB is faster.... maybe less tail rocker. The new MB 2020 is pretty much a HPSB in my opinion. It lacks speed in flat faced waves. The old MB would carry that speed through flat sections better.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks for answering so quickly! What would you recommend instead? I like the Hyfi construction for smaller waves (up to head and a half) because it stays nice and light and sparky for longer than a PU, but doesn't feel too corky.
David Bannochie For head high to overhead punchy waves the MB 2020 will go pretty good. I like the Pyzalien 2, Driver 2.0, The Medina, and a bunch of others. Go to our website and look at my Favorites in Daily Drivers or HPSB’s. Www.surfnshow.com
Bang on Noel! not great in smaller waves
Hey noel, awesome video man
If you had to choose between sci fi and subdriver to be your daily driver, which one would you choose?
Eduardo Sá Subdriver
Also, the squash is the better board.Overall, it seems like it's heavy on belly foam for its size (or maybe the outline was the issue). Noel couldn't get rail to rail as seamlessly as usual. It definitely inhibited Noel's style and technique.
Love the reviews & surfing Noel. Bought a Lost Puddle Jumper HP EPS 12mths ago & changed my life! 6'4, 43 L. I'm 198lb (6'3) & love the paddle power & speed.(intermediate level, live in City).
Looking for a step up (3-6ft range). Wondering advice between LOST quiver killer & JS Raging Bull, maybe around the 6'4, 40ish litre mark? Understand if you'd rather not comment too. Cheers
I have not tried the Lost QK and the Raging Bull needs a wave to go good too. I think the "Bulls Eye" is a good call as it goes good in 3-6' surf.
Who else watched this only because you wanted to see Noel surf that giant SSW Swell
Hey Noel,
How would you compare this to the Air 17x? Im using the Air 17x as a shortboard for 1-5ft surf. I feel like it grovels really well, fast and gets on rail super easy. Im therefore pretty reluctant to try the MB2020 and rather just stick to the Air 17x for my groveller/daily driver.
Cheers legend!
I agree... the Air17X is epic and shreds smaller surf. In my opinion the Air17X out performs the MB2020 by a mile. For the MB2020 needs a good wave with some power to go good. The Air17X shreds in 1-6’ surf.
Cheers for the review. Any Superbrand boards coming up for review, maybe the Pigdog Pro?
