- How to easily create a patina on silver using household ingredients. Black salt and hot water create a solution that will antique silver quickly. Black salt is a natural table salt that's volcanic in origin. It smells strongly of sulfur, which is good for us, as the tarnish we're looking for is silver sulfide. Available at many grocery stores and bulk food stores. Pro tip: Don't use your wife's silver spoons to mix up the solution ;)
Exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you! Got a shiny new necklace that I didn't want so shiny 😊
This is so fantastic 🤩 thank you! I will use this a lot ❤❤❤
I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS RUclips VIDEO!
I HAVE USED LIVER OF SULPHER BUT, IT IS SOMETHING I DON'T CONSIDER SAFE. ALSO, I HAVE FRIENDS WHO DO NOT WANT LOS UP AGAINST THEIR SKIN, CONSTANTLY RUBBING INTO IT.
THIS, ON THE OTHER HAND, I THINK IS SAFE. (TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE, JUST IN CASE THERE ARE ANY METALS IN IT--SUCH AS LEAD, YOU CAN WEAR GLOVES OR COVER YOUR HANDS WITH TOWEL OR SOMETHING). (I HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT BEFORE AND HAVE MADE SILVER JEWELRY FOR A LONG TIME.) I BOUGHT IT IN AN INDIAN STORE AND TRIED IT. IT WORKS VERY WELL. IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR YOU, I'M SURE I STILL WOULD NOT HAVE HEARD OF IT. AGAIN, THANK YOU!!!!!
How long would this last?
How would you change it back to what it was?
@@Hadrada. I think the main thing you have to do is experiment for yourself. I haven't done a lot of that. The few I've done have lasted many months. I don't high polish the silver--I don't know how much it affects the other silver parts--if it darkens it more than the LOS would do and you can't get it fully off. For me, I won't use the LOS (I have in the past though) anymore because of the toxicity. Also, I don't want it to be rubbing off on anyone's skin because of the toxicity--the salt is fine because people eat it!
@@jenny0184 thanks 👍🏼
@@Hadrada. Oh, you are so welcome!😀
I want to do it on ring black colours I want it in black color Is this possible?
turned my ring copper color in about 8 seconds
Pro tip: Don't use your wife's silver spoons "to mix up the solution ;)"
This is great thanks

It's a metal oxide patina, the same tarnish that will form naturally at a much slower rate. It should last indefinitely, will probably darken over time if not worn off. That being said, it can be pretty easily polished off. I have used sunshine cloth, works pretty well without removing much extra material.
Leaving an item in vinegar over night works well! There are even just some silver polishing compounds out there in liquid form: you dab it on a rag and it becomes kinda of dusty then the polish away! Good as new! Here in Australia the product is aptly named "Silvo". There is also "Brasso" which is more abrasive as you can imagine.
How hot of water? Just as hot as the sink can get or should you heat it on the stove?
Thank you so much for sharing!
Just searched about it cause it pulled up in a question
Is it reversible?
I want to do it on ring black colours I want it in black color Is this possible?
Will it get extremely dark if left submerged for longer?

@@Hadrada.Why would you put it back
@@buster1173 to only have dark in the parts you have made depressions in?
I take it you would just polish outer most surface
I tried it but it does not work with literally black salt that I bought. What brand is this salt?
With sulfur in it.
What the heck is black salt!!??
good question !
I bought Black Salt in an Indian grocery store and it is eatable. (Read description above).
It's just a less processed form of salt! Common in Indian households.
It's the secret ingredient to the best tasting scrambled tofu!
Rock salt
I'm hearing bleach will work
Bleach will damage the surface and make pits on the silver
