I was too young to remember the A's World Championship in '89 so the 20 win game was one of my favorite moments as an A's fan............ and now they're moving away. 💔😢 #sell #selltheteam
After I watched this movie I mentioned it to my father the baseball fan. That opened up a floodgate. He said Oakland that year was all about schedules, exhausted players - he went on for a couple of hours and I couldn't get him to stop. I went to the bathroom and he just raised his voice. Fun movie though.
WHY did they skip their reaction to that last good scene of the movie?! Where Jonah Hill’s character shows Brad Pitt the video of that big guy hitting a home run. Such a good scene not to leave in the reaction!
@ 30:03. The 20 game winning streak record set by the Oakland A's in 2002 was eventually broken in 2017 by the Cleveland Indians. That team won 22 games in a row (which is the current American League record). However the all time record is still held by a National League team, the New York Giants (who later relocated to San Francisco), who had a winning streak of 26 games which was set in 1916.
And The Artist was never seen again. I really enjoyed it, but it's interesting how some movies seem to just disappear. Maybe it was a bit too much of a gimmick.
Born and raised Bay Area and Oakland native..the 7 year stretch where moneybag mostly took place from 1999-2005 was a GREAT time to be an A's fan. They developed most of their talent they drafted in order to keep from spending on big name players while utilizing the moneybag strategies of signing guys who were undervalued by other teams in order to win. Love how the film portrays it. The excitement in reality around this team and the time was awesome to experience! Amazing reaction!
One thing the movie didn't show was, the A's didn't just win on moneyball players. They had 3 great pitchers and a shortstop who won mvp of the league but they weren't shown in the movie.
Losing Giambi, Damon and Isringhausen definitely hurt them, but you're right. That A's team still had enough talent leftover to at least be competitive.
Oakland A's fan here, although you are correct...kinda...Tejada the shortstop and those 3 pitchers (Zito, Mulder and Hudson), all were drafted by the A's and eventually all left due to bigger contract offers because The A's developed their own talent and couldn't afford them once they reached their peaks.
Analytics now completely dominates baseball and has been adopted in all sports, and is the leading way in which baseball teams are constructed now. Teams track everything with players. From bat speed(how fast you are able to swing a bat to catch up to pitches), to launch angle(the trajectory in which a player typically hits a baseball)m to exit velocity(the power a player generates which shows how fast a ball travels when a hitter makes contact), to literally dozens of other things. The “old way” is not obsolete though. Analytics is a tool, like anything else, it’s how you use it that’s important. There is something to be said about having a good eye for talent and putting the numbers aside and watching a player play and seeing something special in him that numbers can’t define. But overall it is very useful and teams have entire departments dedicated to it now.
Isn't it, though? Canadians love a contest. They love to be known as the friendliest of all nationalities, and will punch your lights out if you disagree. 😉 I mean, they invented ice hockey. 😜
I liked Chris Pratt before this movie. I LOVED him afterward. It's so fun. Others will talk about the reality of it. I just love the film itself. But also, I do know that my Atlanta Braves hired a GM who's all in on analytics and they've excelled. Won the World Series in 2021.
Sabremetrics, the current term for "moneyball," is definitely still a thing. There are statistics measured now that I could not begin to explain or understand, but everyone, from GMs to fantasy baseball players, rely on them when making their teams, like "WAR," which stands for "wins above replacement." I have no idea what that is, but it's one of the first things people consider. One of the things that this movie leaves out is that it was not "moneyball" alone that led to the A's success: they had 3 guys in their starting pitching staff that would win Cy Young Awards, as the league's best pitcher, and their shortstop, Miguel Tejada, won the league MVP that season. He's not even in this movie. Common denominator among all of them: they were all discovered by the scouting system, not through statistics. Those old guys at the table, ridiculous as they're made to look, did actually know what they were doing. Billy Beane eventually left the A's. He works as an executive for Major League Baseball as a deputy to the Commissioner. The A's are not very good these days, their stadium is falling apart, and in a couple of years, they are moving to Las Vegas.
As a Baltimore Orioles fan I like to recall when the Orioles traded their best relief pitcher, Jorge Lopez, late in 2022, even still with a small chance to make the playoffs. All the talking heads said they were "giving up" and gave them F grades. The very next season, the Orioles had the best record in the American League. Jorge Lopez was let go by his new team, and one of the pitchers the Orioles got in the trade, Yennier Cano, made the All-Star Game. I do not recall hearing any of the talking heads mention that their assessments of the Orioles trade was bullcrap, and the Orioles actually deserved an A+. I never put any weight into the opinions of the armchair GMs. They don't know. They think they know, but they don't know.
It is a terrific film in a lot of ways...I am sure you folks will love it. But as you might expect, Hollywood takes liberties with the real story, and in this case it seems like they may have gotten some significant things wrong. You folks should look at it for yourselves, and decide whether the inaccuracies really matter.👍
If you like baseball you need to watch “the history of the Seattle mariners” by the channel Secret Base. It’s utterly unbelievable what has happened in Seattle. It’s too long to react to (unless you do it per episode) but well worth your time and energy.
what you might not know is that all of the MLB players combined annual salaries is barely 15% of the owners expenses. The owners are the bad guys. They rake in billions and players make millions. I used to (and do hate some of the biggest contracts) hate players salaries. But after looking at what the owners make of what really could be considered "property", I think they should get what they can. Without players, there is no revenue.
Also,, the Colorado Rockies tied that record at the end of the 2007 season and ended by winning 21 of their last 22 before sweeping the National League playoffs. Then they got swept in the World Series by the Boston Red Sox.
Sometimes it's unfortunate that Hollywood feels it necessary to twist reality for the sake of manufactured drama. In real life the manager was down with the program and was basically slandered in this movie.
no statistical analysis replaces the eye test. See, these stats are based on static conditions. They cant take into acct if a pitcher doesnt have the feel for his best pitch, the weather, hitters change of approach. You cant change baseball. The Red sox may have won on the model, but they had the 2nd highest payroll that year. nothing changes the game always goes back to basics. Bruce Bochy has won 4 world series in his last 10 years in MLB by managing by his intuition..stats are simply side info..he wins by the eye test. so while a good movie, it lies a little on how effective stats are. players are superstitious to high degree and you cant put that into a formula. pitchers that have been following this max effort for 5 innings are getting injured at 3 times the rate of the 80s...and now, teams are looking for starters to throw 80% and go 8 innings...that has always been the role and we are now back to what works.

@@JakobBerryIt won because it was about Hollywood.
Lmao won. The artist "won" because...
Analytics has become an integral part of not only baseball, but even NFL football, and Hockey.

Aaron Sorkin is such a brilliant writer, people should just watch everything he has written.
Yes, he's brilliant. But I'd also say in many instances of his writing, if you've seen it, you'll just see it again regurgitated.
Chad Bradford's pitching style is called the "Submarine-style" because it comes up from below.

They really only focused on like 3 players so there were a lot of other players good and bad that weren’t mentioned
They were shown very briefly
Pitchers don't win games, they help you not lose. that and they got the pitchers using the same stat methods.

Watched three movies one after the other in one evening. Oscar nominated movies. The Artist, Moneyball and War Horse.
I met the real Billy beane a few years ago.. he's an incredible guy.. and really cared about making a difference in the world, and he did
You guys will love "Draft Day" with Kevin Costner

2nd Best Baseball movie ever...it took Major League's spot behind Bull Durham in my mind, with The Natural rounding out the top 4.
I was at the 20th game…now the city of Oakland and the A’s ownership messed everything up and now my childhood baseball team is moving to Las Vegas 😥

Your comment to play one game is not how baseball works. 😕 That's why baseball is played like a marathon not a sprint.
