Your ear for a good melody jezper is possibly the best out of any trance artist ive come across, most of your tracks are emotional, powerful and uplifting, this clip you demonstrate could easily be made into a song in itself, amazing work......
It's amazing to see the different pieces come together, as well as showing many how much one should make use of the effects and compressors to make a perfect sound. Many thanks for all the lessons.
God bless you for doing this. You have no idea how nice it is to actually see how one of electronic musics greatest crafts together his music. Very inspiring =D
Pffff, hard to believe, that all this came straight form the sequencer, with no mastering! This is really the most helpful video i've ever seen on youtube. thx.
Thank you one million times Airbase For this tutorial I was thrilled that (for the first time)i could actually watch a tutorial by a pro who makes great tunes thank you and keep making tutorials if you feel like I was absolutely thrilled by this =D
Great job. I am not into Trance style, but your tutorials are so much better than videos made by dance pruducers "gurus" like ones sponsored by the Computer Music magazine, if you know what i'm talking about.........
Hi Jezper, thank you for sharing this with us. Would it be possible to do walkthroughs of your records from the past, like Tangerine, One Tear Away, Glow, Escape etc. That would be much appreciated and then we have more of an inside in how to make (what we call nowadays) classic trance. Love to hear from you! - Geanne
Let's say I put down a melody and I loop it. Then I wanna flick thru patches to find a good sound for that melody. Thing is, some patches are higher/lower (oscillators set higher/lower). Instead of moving the notes up/down one octave for those patches, I sometimes throw in a pitch plugin that I activate or deactivate. It's just a faster way to move the notes to hear if the patch is suitable. Once I've settled for a sound, the pitch plugin sometimes get's left in the channel to do what it does.
I assume you mean you can form the kick that is the kick of your track (or any other source) as the input for your side chaining. The reason I do it this way, is because the kicks I like to use are often punch with a long bassy tail. I like to keep them that way, while for the side chaining I want something much shorter. Most times I reduce that muted kick to only a click.
As you see him doing, cut away the low frequencies to not mudd the mix to much when adding new sounds. And then use Sidechain to also push away some sounds when the kick hit.
I just like OS X. My laptop is a Mac but my DAW is a PC still, so I'm in both camps. The screen recording software for OS X is very good so that's the reason I use it for this.
As I said, I don't use Live, but in my DAW it is possible to take whatever waveform the kick produces and shape it using parameters to get the right sidechaining effect without using a mute kick. Since I understand Live to be quite a mature DAW I figured you should be able to do the same. But the muted kick idea is cool too, I just never thought of doing it that way since it shouldn't be necessary.
Thanks the helpful tutorial. It's great to see what goes into this type of track. Do you normally use loops or would your advice be to learn how to make the drum groove from the ground up?
I really tried to like Cubase and I really tried to understand Logic (irony!) but it wasn't until Shane 54 showed me Ableton a few years ago that I instantly realised "this is the way I want to work". It's just so much nicer (for me) to work with). I haven't tried FL since 2000 or so, so i have no idea what it has turned into.
No, I mean I can form the automation that is created from the kick sound independently of the kick sound. The plug-in I use samples the sound peaks but doesn't doesn't modify the sound in any way - it simply allows it to pass through. However, the controls of the plugin allow you to shape the waveform that it perceives and that can then be used as an automation source for however many tracks you like.
You can ofcourse side chain anything to anything. I use this method as it's the most customizable way for meto do what I want to do. Or do you have any other suggestion that is better?
I'm not sure I follow at all. But if that method works for you, great stuff. Let me know if you have a tutorial on how your method is done, as I'd like to see it in live action!
I believe I use compressors more than others might, so maybe it's a good or a bad thing for me, I let others be the judge of that. But for this tutorial in particular, I needed to stick to how I do it myself to have it sound like something I would do. I never compress the master out, I much rather like to control the instruments in their place on a channel to channel basis to make the master as gentle as possible.
You know, I don't know very much about those things. I just put stuff up if they are to low, and put them down if they are too high. I really suck at mixing/mastering. I leave that to people who knows what they're doing.
Hey Alex! The reason I don't use built in FX like delay and reverb here is that compressors or any other FX (bit crush etc) would mess with both the incoming sound and the FX. Therefor I usually like to get clean audio out from the synth and then use the FX I like or knows best on my own. And yes, the delay and reverb of sylenth sure sounds good. About how to make it sound a bit more analog, I have no good tip. Anyone else perhaps got one?
Hey Airbase! First of all you make great music, and this is one of the best tutorials on the internet. My question though is, what should be the volume levels for mastering, so not all the sounds are all over the place. I want to achieve that clean sound but my volume levels just don't seem right =/
You mean bringing the synth up? I'm just clicking the little wrench button on the synth module. follow the mouse and you can see where I'm clicking to bring it up. The little button turns from grey to yellow when the window is open.
What an awesome tutorial! Thanks so much! Question: Why do u have that pitch control in the plugin chain and how does it benefit you in the productions? Just curious, I've never used that in live before.
Thank you for a great video. Just one question: Do you use sylenth all the time, or was it just suitable for this tutorial? Thank you again, for sharing the secrects of producing :)
I like how you make your stuff radio-ready straight from Live. I was going to ask you what do you use for mastering - how many plugins on master channel do you have on top of all of this... Seems like none... :-)
I like Cubase myself because it has a nice big sequencer window and everything is just big (on a wide screen LCD TV it's even better). I find it hard to work with smaller windows like that found in Ableton or even more so Reason. Each to their own though.
This is an amazing tutorial for beginners, only problem is so many of the beginners will now have the "airbase sound" :D I have one question... how do you offbeat sidechain the pad without the kick playing? In Logic, using sidechain compression on something will only work in "realtime", for example once the kick is muted, there will be no sidechain compression on the pad..
It's easier to manipulate (do breaks etc.) the kick in Simpler and have it as a midi than copy/duplicate it in arrangement view. I also think it is a bit easier on the cpu, but I'm not 100% sure about this...
I like this tune. It sounds very Alphazone but with an Airbase twist. So tell me, why the name Airbase? Would you consider producing other genres of dance music or is trance your one and only passion? Congrats on having the guts to produce a tutorial like this. Sadly, a lot of producers in the scene are reluctant to help others as deeply as you have for fear of giving others an advantage or giving away their 'secrets'. Tutorial suggestion: track arrangement - intro, breakdown, peak, outro etc.
sorry i didnt ask how to sidechain in abelton , Most sidchain/peak compressors work alike , and adding the kick activates the sidechain , but some producers can keep the pad/lead sidechained with no kick. I used sidechain for a remix of pjanoo and i can sidechain with kick no problem , but without a kick i cant do it .
Ok so i meant that in "Session view" i see 4 clips in the column of sub bassline which include the notes. And in "Arrangement view" those notes are different in sub bassline. So u couldn't use those from the session view :D It makes a completely different melody :P Sorry i can't really make clearer, im not a really beginner and i dont know all expressions connected to these stuffs.
Nope, nothing. When I'm in my studio I might add some general high on the master, but that's not for mastering purposes. I only do that because my mixing desk outputs more high than it should, so I need to compensate for that.
I'm from Sweden (we've met) but I ask in English if there's anyone that wonders the same; Why do don't you use the built in reverb and delay in Sylenth1? Don't you like the sound of it or is it another reason? I can myself feel that the built in delay and reverb is a tad hard to manage, but it has a good sound. BTW, do you have any advice on how to make the Sylenth1 patches sound a bit more "analog" (like any VST to process them with), I think they sometimes can sound almost too clean/good.
It seems weird that you used a separate muted kick just for the purposes of side chaining. I don't use Live personally but surely you can set the threshold and scale and other parameters so that you don't need to do that?
im very very curious how did you eq mid bass 1 and 2, that they sound so glued. I would be thankful since i have little problem with layering sounds. greets
One thing i don't get after checking the project file that how is it possible that u have different notes in the different views in abletom? I checked the Sub bassline and dunno why is that..
heyyy just wondering... seen a few of your videos n you seem like you know wut youre doin do wuz wonderin... on this video particularly, why do you have each drum for a different track instead of usin drum racks? I dunno if theres a plus to doin it your way or if you maybe did it just to show people wut was goin on...

cant believe this has been like 7 years.....man, time is a funny thing.
Thank you for taking the time to make these tutorials, they are very helpful.
Pffff, hard to believe, that all this came straight form the sequencer, with no mastering!
This is really the most helpful video i've ever seen on youtube.
thx.
That melody should have been made into a song if it hasn't already. For "a little something you made this morning" it sounds pretty damn good.
Never made it into a full song, no. Too bad, I still like it. Who knows what can happen :)
Jesper, thanks so much for doing these tutorials. Very much appreciated!
For something done just in the morning, that was amazing.
Thanks for useful tutorials - I made some arranged mixes from this awasome "Declaration of Content" material - all credits to Airbase!
Thank you one million times Airbase For this tutorial I was thrilled that (for the first time)i could actually watch a tutorial by a pro who makes great tunes thank you and keep making tutorials if you feel like I was absolutely thrilled by this =D
Super! Your tutorials are the ones I have been waiting for.Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!
Great job. I am not into Trance style, but your tutorials are so much better than videos made by dance pruducers "gurus" like ones sponsored by the Computer Music magazine, if you know what i'm talking about.........
Your tutorials are fantastic!
i love ableton, sylenth and this song. good job!
i want to hear that song once it's done... just from that intro it already sounded awesome... Jazper, you are my fovorite DJ...
Awesome stuff! Definitely gave me some ideas to use in Reason. Many thanks!
I like the context in which he uses the term "show off". It's cool.
select what you want to move, click and hold your mouse button, then press tab to move to the other view, and then drop the stuff where you want them.
thanks for these great tutorials

Not at all, but I have only a select few synths installed on my Macbook and that one is a great allrounder with solid patches; perfect for tutorials.
It's a 30 minute production made before the tutorial was recorded, I just didn't streamline the arrangement.
As you see him doing, cut away the low frequencies to not mudd the mix to much when adding new sounds. And then use Sidechain to also push away some sounds when the kick hit.
Haha, glad to hear you like it. No plans to finish it though...

Made this in Reason 4, thanks again Jezper!
I alwayss loved you and you know what you are my major inspiration too for Creating my own TRANCE Scene thank you so much :)

Use an LFO set to 1/4 notes to control filter frequency or volume. Live's auto filter has one built in.
You can ofcourse side chain anything to anything. I use this method as it's the most customizable way for meto do what I want to do. Or do you have any other suggestion that is better?

Very Usefull thx man thx
It's the default soundbank. Update to the latest version and they should be there
Thx for all your videos!! u r great!!
thx man!!! this tutorial is great!! This is very helpful!! THX again!!
@AirbaseOfficial great, thank you for that!
Hey Alex!

Question:
Why do u have that pitch control in the plugin chain and how does it benefit you in the productions? Just curious, I've never used that in live before.
Hey man thanks for sharing your knowledge... really. witch soft you use to record the video? :)
Thanks for this jesper, this is exactly what I was asking for in the forums!
Question: what was on channel 16 - the synth 1 ?
The sequencer? It's called Ableton Live 7.
Thank you for a great video.
Just one question: Do you use sylenth all the time, or was it just suitable for this tutorial?
Thank you again, for sharing the secrects of producing :)
I start out in session mode to make a good groove, then I move all of it into the arrangement view and continue there.
I'm not sure I understand the question. You mean for detuning the sound from the synth? Or just using the pitch plugin to change let's say the octave?
I like how you make your stuff radio-ready straight from Live. I was going to ask you what do you use for mastering - how many plugins on master channel do you have on top of all of this... Seems like none... :-)
Very nice job.
love it good job jaz:)
Did you check the video? From the 2 minute mark, I show you how to side chain without a kick.
Thanks you so much!

@MedlockMusic Sorry, it's there in the RUclips description now.

cracking tutorial cheers :-)
yeah, where's the project file??? :'(
best tutorial i have seen so far!!!! :)

Well, there are no real rules as long as it sounds good. If it works for you, just go for it!
Maan this vid is fucking awesome :) Well done.

Wow :D
nice,
Whats the program called?
@Elefaze click Solo while holding Cmd (Ctrl for Windows).
Very nice vid, like your rhythms, I dont struggle as much with the sound as I do with the rhythms! :-(
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Can you try and elaborate?
you have to load it in sampler or in impulse or in drumrack , you choose
I'm from Sweden (we've met) but I ask in English if there's anyone that wonders the same;

Just a reverb with no filters and then a compressor after that

very nice...... you should reconsider finishing it !;)
Good tutorial , but one question , is how you got the pad to sidechain with no kick , i dont really use sidechain its all new to me?
@LandoWordpress Fixed now!
I watched and downloaded this tutorial, it's very good but i still can't figure out one thing, what is the Zebra2 used for ?
Kind regards !
im very very curious how did you eq mid bass 1 and 2, that they sound so glued. I would be thankful since i have little problem with layering sounds. greets
Wow, dude, how you mix & master those beasts? I'll add four instruments and track becomes UNMIXABLE. :-D
Огонь!!!
One thing i don't get after checking the project file that how is it possible that u have different notes in the different views in abletom? I checked the Sub bassline and dunno why is that..
I could do that, but I never work like that...
What effects are you using on your reverse cymbal and cymbal crashes?
heyyy just wondering...
seen a few of your videos n you seem like you know wut youre doin do wuz wonderin... on this video particularly, why do you have each drum for a different track instead of usin drum racks? I dunno if theres a plus to doin it your way or if you maybe did it just to show people wut was goin on...
What does he mean by a shuffle bassline?
Actually, I'd just prefer to move the notes in the piano roll :)
thanks but realized all I had to do was have the kick send pre-fader (as opposed to post)
:)
thx m8
