I just purchased the Canon R10 and the Canon RF 100-400 lens this week. I followed your instructions on how to set it up so that it was optimized for wildlife photography. It was a joy to be able to immediately capture some lovely wildlife moments thanks to your clear and concise instructions. Thank you so much for your guidance and for your patience with explaining each step so thoroughly! :D
Thank You, Thank You! Excellent Video. I am so happy I found your channel. I upgraded from the 80D to the R10 and your video is "Most Excellent"! Your presentation, content and production quality are the best. Keep' em coming, I am a subscriber (grin).
Welcome aboard and THANKS! Let me know if there's anything you would like t know more about the camera, etc. Low light video and review incoming in next couple weeks for the R10.
It is and its wrong also. I was looking up the blinkies sections I misidentified MF peak settings as blinkies in this video. And I the advanced R10 manual, it referred to a menu and tab with an option that doesn't even exist and didn't match their screen shots. OOPS CANON ! lol AND THANKS ! More R10 content coming very soon.
I know this is an old video, but thank you so much for this! I already had back button AF set up, but I hadn't figured out a way to get a secondary button to spot AF. I thought the best the R10 could do was quickly cycling AF modes with the multifunction button. I set my R10 up as described in this video and went out shooting today. It was a night and day difference and I got shots I would have totally missed before. Thank you!!!
Great information on your vids. I'm using the R6 and R7 right now but I always get something new from your other vids to incorporate in my workflow. Thank you for the effort sir!
This video was an absolute godsend, thanks! Coming from the R6 I was looking for an easy way to switch between AF tracking/eye detect and AF point and did not find anything that worked for me. The double back button AF solution on the R10 is as simple as it is useful.
I find your video very interesting and useful. But, it could be yet better if you state that Mf peaking is for Manual Focus peeking. It highlights in color the contested edges that are in focus when shot in manual focus. I used a lot when shot using vintage lenses on my canon. Is my understanding that in this camera the zebra patterns are on the movie mode only.
Hello! I followed your video to set up my camera. Video was helpful but I do have an issue. More of a general question for you - Settings work great for wildlife photography, but when I switch out my RF 100-400 to my canon RF 18-45 wide angle lens, it won't auto focus. I can manually focus with the smaller of the two rings on the lens, but it won't focus when i tap or hold down AF ON. Can you or anyone please help??? I do like to take occasional landscape shots and do not trust myself with manually focusing. I am okay at it, but have lost out on some really great opportunities due to my inability to perfectly focus. Do the settings in your video affect the autofocusing capabilities for landscape using a wide angle lens? If not, any suggestions on what I can do? Going to Yellowstone in a few weeks and need to figure this out fast! Thank you and anyone else for much needed advice!
This may sound silly, but make sure the lens is not in MF. Second, with the wide angle lens I would just use the single point anyway unless you're trying to do portrait. The settings shouldn't matter the n changing lenses really. if it still has issues then. I would suggest you take it to your camera shop and have them look at it. This is a bit odd behavior in my opinion and hard to diagnose without looking math the equipment and settings. Good luck
Hi Scott. I am loving these settings. I've been shooting auto ISO for 10 years and been happy, but recently I've gotten into birding vs big game and that just wasn't working anymore with backlit subjects. I've completely changed to manual now thanks to your video. I do have a question regarding this camera and shooting video. A couple times I've tried to shoot at 400mm with the image stabilization on in lens and the digital in camera. Things look good, nice and steady in camera, but once home the footage isn't useable. Looks very jittery like a stuttering shutter or something. Is shooting handheld with IS at that length just not possible or is there something in my settings I could try changing? Thanks bunches. I've been shooting Bald Eagles in New Mexico lately, but I sure envy you being in Alaska. I used to do trail work in Cordova, beautiful county.
The longer focal ranges, any movement you make will be exaggerated. When I'm handheld at 500 with my big lens its a mess. I have to steady it on a tree or hopefully I have a tripod. Now the rf 100-400 it was easy to handhold for video as its s light. I leave my IS on with the lens and default on the camera IS. Just have to stabilize the camera somehow shooting video :(
Hi great video I'm using canon r10 with 50mm ef with a viltrox adaptor I dont know which lens should I purchase next , can you give me any suggestions?
hi WA, great video, a life saver for sure for wildlife folks like me moving from 200D2(SL3). I wanted to know its pairing with Sigma 150-600mm using the mount any feedback on that on the AF and response time. Thanks!
Duade Patton on his channel has used the Sigma lens. I tested the Tamron version I this video ruclips.net/video/XnvuGbBKqNU/видео.html It didn't do as well as any of the canon lenses. There is a sigma update for the lens I think also.
@@WILDALASKA thanks for the suggestion, i did see that video and left a query there as well around Tamron. The question i have now is i heard in another video from a R10 user that its difficult to use the viewfinder in R10 as its small and hard to see through and gives a headache and tracking the birds through it becomes a challenge, what were your experiences with that.
@@CrazyBlueMood EVF is fine. Its not as large magnification as the R5 but its very close t the R7. Make sure you adjust the brightness level on the Eve and you will be ok
I have a major issue with my R 10. I am using with canon 400 L 5.6 and Sigma 150-600c. But in low light it couldn't Autofocus with spot or single point AF. It focuses well though on whole area AF.
Not sure but couple things may be the issue. The 400 L is at the age of lens that may not be as compatible with the RF mount. And the Sigma is a known issue with AF on the RF mount cameras
Sorry for long comment! Thank you for this very clear and detailed explanation (Canon manual can be confusing sometimes). If I may I'd like to ask you a question regarding Subject Tracking (I came from Canon 2000D so such advanced focusing options are quite new to me). You say you turn it off in the menu to have a possibility to activate it by button. This is clear. I shoot in servo most of the time, and I noticed that, when turned off in options, after using button Subject Tracking stays activated only for some time. Well, at least the white frame is not there all the time. Does it mean that we have to press the button each time we want to use it, after each shot (or series of shots)? I tried to find something on the Internet but nothing about that can be found on the Canon manual nor website and information from some message boards are even more confusing, like: " I found out that assigning Tracking button is not the same as the Subject Tracking setting in the AF Menu 1: By assigning it to a button you can activate whole-of-screen tracking of your subject when you don't have the Whole Area AF pattern selected. I find this useful when I have the Spot AF selected - I can select my intended subject, press the lock button I have programmed and then freely recompose without holding the shutter button half pressed. So long as the camera manages to keep the double box on my selected subject I can AF on it - works in 1-shot and Servo. But it does drop out if/when the camera loses track of the subject for whatever reason, but another press of the button will bring it up again on whatever subject I have selected"
once you press the shutter to take a picture the subject tracking button will need to be hit again. The R7 autofocus video shows this in detail more. your autofocus set up in second pragraph way more complicated than needed. with back button set as I have it. you can jump between whole are eye detect or single point with your thumb and index finger to snap the pic during the different on the fly focus modes. my next new video to start will cover this stuff in the field which hopefully helps everyone understand this. Check the community posts for the poll on the next video to make. thanks for your questions and input.
@@WILDALASKA Thanks Scott. I did find that explanation which I found a bit complicated. At the end of the day the best way to learn is to try and this is what I did (that's the reason of my question). Such information is nowhere in manual so thanks for answering this question! I watched your R7 video a month ago when I picked the R10 up (some parameters are the same so it helped me a lot) and I had same thoughts about Subject Tracking like after this one. My buttons configuration is mostly same like you advised (the only difference is that my Eye AF is on the "star button") and it works great (idea from your R7 video of course). Cannot wait to see next video! Thank for great content you publish here!
Just bought the camera and I'll pair it with the 600 f11. Weighs just under 3 pounds total. I got the lens on a labor day sale for $600. Great bang for buck setup for $1579 total.
very good set up. Next purchase I would suggest would be a lens coat rain cover and carry it at all times as bth lens and body are not weatherproofed. light rain for a it is ok, but not for long periods :)
for stills? very little - button layout, IBIS (not an issue), weather sealing (need to be more careful in rain) Image quality is very very close. Autofocus is the same
I have a 580exii flash that on my 7D emits the light beam and focuses 100%, now, I bought an R10 and this beam doesn't work at all! I've looked in the manuals for both and nothing. If anyone can give me some light... Thank you. 📸

Hi Scott noob question. What is the difference between AF and Eye AF when selecting the remapping buttons?
AF is the method you assigned in the AF menu. EYE AF is the af that looks at the entire screen and tries to find an eye head or body
Does this camera has focus stacking (auto mode) ? 🙂Great video. Might buy it.
I believe it does

I don't understand how are you pick up a bird in motion if you're just using single point focus or eye detect?
Eye auto is looking from corner to corner for an animal. If it sees something that matches its algorithm it locks on and it does it very well.
Good info when I could follow, but you move a little fast.
