I agree, it's extremely insidious to choose plus size and women of colour to promote their sweatshops. Shein are not blind, they are well aware that plus size people love their brand for affordable and size-inclusive clothing. They are trying to sweep slave labour under the rug by saying 'yes, we use sweatshops and slave labour, but where else are you going to get X size clothing for under £10?'

This is wild to me. Dani comes from a family drowning in privilege and doesn’t even have the excuse of “this is the only brand I can afford”
This was a cash and fame grab from Dani and it’s incredibly disappointing. Her whole platform is based on “being real and loving yourself as you are” etc. This brand trip was far from “real.”
I have watched her for a while and I thought she was a lot more self aware than this. Yikey yikes.

I've actually worked with her a few years back. We hired her to model for the company and do some social media work. She was pretty cool and didn't want to mislead her followers and was pretty up front about it. I wonder what changed. This was before her tiktok days so I'm guessing she just makes way more money now. It's disappointing that she sold out so badly.

I've been talking about this (and Shein, in general) with people at work. I work in an office, of mostly women aged 40-60. I was surprised to hear how many of them bought from Shein since I assumed it was younger girls who were buying into it. But people of all ages and sizes are buying from Shein and enjoying their items, people buy their whole holiday wardrobe off Shein, for example. And people (in real life, not influencers) are so supportive and defensive of Shein. Almost all people I talk to about it love Shein, love that it's affordable, accessible, inclusive, and easy-to-wear. We discuss fast fashion, living conditions of garment workers, but people always circle back to wanting affordable clothing in a cost of living crisis. It's so unexpected to hear people offline not understand the negative impact of Shein, but it has opened my eyes to how people perceive Shein, and whilst I consume a lot of sustainability content, the general public are not aware of it. It's a bit disheartening maybe, because you feel like the internet is making strides away from fast fashion, then you hear stuff like this, then you hear what the general public consensus is, and realise fast fashion is not going anywhere anytime soon. BTW I'm from the UK, so this is a non-american perspective, and I'm not a perfect eco-fashion consumer, I only learnt about it a couple of years ago, so I hope I don't sound like I'm standing on a soapbox.

Thank goodness I don't have TikTok, I guess, because this is the first I've heard about this. It reminds me of that one youtuber that "worked" for like an hour at McDonald’s for $2,000 and talked about how GREAT it was while all their employees were still being paid poverty wages.

I agree. I fell out of makeup youtube and makeup drama due to me being in college (Chemistry doesn't give you many options to glam up lol) but since I've graduated and gotten back into it again seeing stuff like this is discouraging. Tiktok seems like it's own beast nowadays with misinformation and that's disheartening- I'm glad I don't have Tiktok either.

I totally understand the buying multiples and the frustration. Currently on the hunt for new jeans to fit my big hips/booty and when I find ones that fit, I will make sure to buy at least 3 or 4 pair. The last time I bought jeans was about 15 years ago and I bought 6 pairs of the same jeans because it's such a mess to find ones that fit.

  • @Byebyebutterflies

Shein has been the center of controversy for so long. I went through a hardcore Shein era. The clothes are garbage. I ended up spending more money to make up for every top, pant, sock, pair of underwear that disintegrated in the washing machine.
I resorted to thrifting, but the “haul culture” of thrifting has inflated the price of most affordable stores. I’m battling some 19 year old starting a fashion company with hoards of thrifted items. Not trying to be salty, but it’s low to take opportunities to afford sustainable clothing from folks who don’t have the means to buy half the store.
At this stage, I don’t know where you can find attainable, ethical clothing. I’ve been stalking my local Marshalls - few gems to be had there. A slightly irregular stitch on an otherwise decent skirt? Score. But man oh man. Clothing is getting weird and it’s even weirder to be aware of it.

The more I learn about fast fashion the more I'm convinced that I need to completely cut it out of my life. The ways these workers are treated is so unfair and no article of clothing is worth their horrendous suffering. I would rather wear a gunny sack than support such appalling work conditions. No article of clothing is worth it. Again not a single garment is worth the ongoing mistreatment of another human being.

I used to work in the garment industry I left in around 2007 (it wasn't for a fast fashion company). I used to travel to Asia to see factories and it was frustrating because we would be shown a pristine facility but sometimes they would try and work it into our contracts that they could "subcontract" to other factories and that pretty much meant it would be going to a sweatshop. One of the reasons I left was because we got a new GM who started to be more lenient with allowing subcontracting and I didn't think it was right ethically because the manufacturers didn't have to show us the subcontracted factories. I can't believe that it's 15+ years later and people are still falling for this shit. Of course they're going to show you the best "warehouse" and not the horror shows that are described in the news.

I’m trying not to shop there but we are in a recession and plus size ppl can’t find cute clothes normally. On the off chance that you do read this, any suggestions to get over the nihilism of “everyone’s manufacturing practices suck I should just give up on trying to find ethical solutions?” I have worked in manufacturing (not clothing, but gives me an idea of the dismal average working conditions all over the world) for years and I can’t help feeling like there is no good solution other than buying second hand or just not shopping.
