These "why I do it" videos do more for me than all the "how to do it" videos all over RUclips. I'm 63 and living on Social Security and retirement money. I'll never have a big studio or shoot with Leicas and Hasselblads or travel the world shooting glamorous models on the beach. What I can still do is find images that interest me and take photos of them in ways that work for me. My technique will never dazzle anyone, but I took up photography because I enjoyed it Why would anyone do this without love?
Much the same with me Viktor - I too am 63 and take photos of what I want. The how I want is gradually being influenced by the techniques I can learn from Peters videos. Like you I will never have a the toys Peter has, just my trust Canon and a few lenses and a second hand flash I had for Christmas from my Wife. Thanks Peter for sharing these things with us.
This is everything. You’ve explained the world of being a passionate photographer better than anyone I’ve ever heard. Thank you so much for sharing your work, your passion and your memories with us.
Peter, thank you so much for sharing your photography story and opening up your soul. To me this was absolutely one of your most inspiring RUclips videos.
Thank you for this Peter. I needed this reminder. I did my first shoot yesterday with a professional model who was kind enough to do a TFP shoot... we had a really fun time and got some photos we both love and will remind us of that fun time. For me it was a bright oasis in a very challenging week. No one made any money but we both got something we value.
Thank you. I have watched hundreds of RUclips videos about photography and yours is the most important one I’ve seen. It taught me nothing about the technical details of photography but everything I need to know. It moved me to tears.
I watched this and this 61 year old man sobbed…my wife is like what the hell is wrong with you, but if you know you know. Thank you Peter! Photography is not a choice for me it’s how I process moments of my life and my relationships.
Peter, you really made me cry today watching this and I didn't realize how much I needed to hear these words. I've been shooting seriously for only 6 months, but at 25 when you put your all into something and it doesn't show results when you expect it to it can be really frustrating. I only have a few of those wonderful memories with shoots so far, but this video gives me so much hope for the future. Thank you, beyond any amount of words, thank you.
Wow. Just WOW. This might be the most impactful video I’ve ever seen on youtube. Thank you SO SO much for uploading this! Its exactly what I needed to hear. Your work is also absolutely ASTONISHING. Utterly incredible. IMMEDIATE subscribe. Thank you again.
Oh my... Photography is MY hobby, my expression, what I see, what I feel about it! I've tried chasing likes on social media but stopped it. I'm back to my thing in landscape and macro, mostly natrual light - and I'm very happy about it. A lot of people tell me I have to sell my pic - but no ... I'm at the point where it's my stuff only and loving it! Thanks Peter, your inspiration, teaching and wisdom, combined with your humor has been keeping me up to MY stuff. You encouraged me to do my stuff, even if it's sooo far away from what you do (and I admire you for that 😍) THANKs - keep going.
Peter. i can feel the emotion in your voice , to listen to you and how much your moved by your amazing work . has honestly brought me to tears , i watch every video you and Bec produce. keep up the amazing work. regards. Dean
Your love and connection to photography is so inspiring. That passion and love shows through in your communication and direction with your model to create amazing art. I wish you many more non-paid personal shoots that leave a mark on your soul!
This went stright to my heart, thanks for yet another great video, you and your videos have made me start shooting photos for over 2 years now. Thanks sir.
Dear Peter Coulson - your Statement makes me Goosebumps! Yes, the Moments, the Storys and the Memorys after my Pictures, are the Reasons why i take Photos! It's not the Money. Thank you for sharing your Mindset! 🙂
Peter as I told you in person, this video had an amazing impact on me. This marks the 4th time I have watched it and still causes me to ponder. Thank you again for sharing. I'm sure it's impact on me was also shared by others
Perfect timing video, Peter. I'm struggling 'cause I hate the stuff that I do for commercial brands. SO F***** BORING! I love the sensitivity that you have in your soul and words in this video. Thank you!
I got a bachelor of fine art (BFA) degree in photography back in 1980. And that’s why I work in the pharmaceutical industry today! I’ve continued making photos ever since, and still don’t regret not trying to make a living at it. That would have been extremely hard, and would’ve ruined it for me. Good honest video about how to really love what you love doing. Cheers!
That is some of the best information ever put out about photography and the reason, passion behind pushing the button I have ever listen to. Thank you Peter.
As I've said before, I love your rants as they are from the heart and I agree with a lot of what you say. For me, I take photos for the love of it. It costs me money but that's how it is. Last year I shot a high profile model and she loved my shots so much that she wants to use one in a new book of hers. I'm just an amateur so this an amazing thing for me and who knows, it might lead to something else.
So well said. I started my photographic journey 40 years ago, but after a decade I was seduced by the corporate world and the money into becoming a successful engineer and photography took a back seat. It continued to provide images that I still treasure today, but it wasn't the most significant part of my life. I was lucky enough to retire early five years ago and since have reignited my passion for photography. When I restarted this journey I also thought that I needed to make money from my work, but things were a lot different to they were 30 years ago. Slowly I realised that making money from my images was hard and it probably wasn't going to make me happy, so I shot what I wanted. I'm working on a couple of projects to give me focus (a book on the English seaside and a project one a disappearing community) and take photos for a few local charities that couldn't afford 'professional' a photographer. Im happy. P.S. The images you showed were beautiful, so its not just you or the model that appreciates them.
Thank you for this message. I have several photographer friends who have fallen into that "I gotta make money at this" camp. When I got back into photography a little over a decade ago, I made the conscious decision that it was never going to be a business for me, nor was I doing it "to make money." I've sometimes gotten paid to do what I'm doing now...and I've turned down a lot of offers to shoot weddings, family portraits, etc., because that's NOT what I want to do. The comment about knowing the backstory to your images is so true: one of the best shoots I've had, and not really from a technical POV, was one I did with a friend of mine. When we were done and I showed her the images, she said to me: "I'm 29 years old, and I've never felt I was beautiful. Until these [images]." I look at those images and still get teary-eyed thinking of what they meant to her and, by extension, to me. It's not, and will never be, about the money for me.
The best thing I’ve heard. You are truly a inspiration and I love your work. I love the chemistry you have with your models.. they seem to trust you and that’s important. Love these videos
Thank you Peter. I love your pictures before watching this chapter and after even more! I understand more why I love so much making pictures and whats going in me in that process.. Amazing "rant" mate! Hell of lots of life lessons and emotions you share with us, the audience. Thank you again.
Peter ! You are a big inspiration for me and many more people that love good quality photography, I'm in my 60s and I just started this journey and I can see that I'm developing my own signature style, I want to thank you for so many technical and inspirational tips, One day I will shake your hand and say thank you in person.
Thank you for sharing your passoin and experience with all of us. This is one of your best videos you have given us. I really appreciate your honesty and all of the joy you put into each of your videos. It shows in the way you work with Bec and the models. Your rant as you called it was perfectly timed for me today, it inspires me to stay true to my vision and keep taking pictures.
Peter I am so glad I found your RUclips channel. Thank you for expressing what I feel. I've been doing photography for 50 plus years and will continue to do so just for the enjoyment of it all. Keep posting, creating and allowing us to join you.
Thanks for this one, Peter. I have only just stumbled upon this video whilst looking for something else! However, having seen this, I'd put it as my #1 favourite. So much here that needed saying and you have said it so eloquently. This is not a rant, it is a dose of reality. It shouldn't stop anyone from pursuing their photographic ambition, but it certainly should inspire them and cause them to reflect upon why they're doing what they're doing (in photography). First rate stuff. If this is an example of you ranting, than I'd say "Rant some more!". Thanks again.
Again my thanks to you for sharing your thoughts and views! Viewing this video has made me remember why I got deep into photography. To capture the moment and preserve the memory, making money would be nice and a bonus but you reminded me why I do it!!! Thank you Sir so very much!!!
Peter - thanks for covering this topic. Over the last 2 weeks I have been seriously struggling with the idea of charging for shoots (though, I haven’t figured out an approach that makes me comfortable). After watching your video, I am thinking that my struggle is not so much around how much to charge, but instead about the loss of passion that comes from shooting as a hobby. So your words are something to reflect on; but they came at the perfect time. Cheers!
Thank you Peter your message here was a bittersweet realization, I have always had an interest in photography and wanted to make a living from it , but never did and I always kick myself for it. About 30 years ago as a favor to my cousin I agreed to take photos at his wedding all I had was a cannon EOS 100 (which I still own) he and his wife kept complementing me on my photos but I never viewed them myself until many years later when I noticed I photo at their place thinking it was from the professional photographer they hired - and I was totally amazed at how it looked. Life took me down a different path but I find myself coming back to photography again and you’re images and stories are appreciated and inspiring- thanks for sharing your passion.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I am thankful for my day job but it’s a high stress, long hour job that is challenging. Photography has been something that makes working, worth it. I have had external pressures and also pressured myself to make money from photography. The problem is that I am so limited in time. Hearing this from you helps me confirm that it’s okay to shoot what I want to shoot. Thank you.
Looking at photo images captured 30+ years ago, spark the memory recall of that time. Like going back in time. Have photos that family took of my younger years, the streets, buildings, cars of yesteryear - Breath taking.
Thank you for this! I was just part of an online summit on 'How to Break Free from The Starving Artist Syndrome' - in my interview I concluded that for me, it was more important to feed my creative soul, tell a story & hopefully make a difference in the subject or the viewer's life - that feeds me far better than money! So, once again, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for the kind words. Photographers are visual beings. Perceptive, sensitive, creative. This often doesn't come hand in hand with a businessman skills or even communication skills. While earning money matters, the example you give is freeing and inspirational
Thank you for this video. i really been struggling about this particular subject for the past few years. This video has opened my eye a lot and the fact i been stressing about my photography on to how to make money off of it. I generally feel at ease now like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders and now gotten me in the mind set now if i make some money cool bean but end the end of things just shoot for yourself (and for the model of course) and just make art, make memories that will last a lifetime. you cant put a price on memories or the stories that you make with your work. One more thing i can tell you this though you are by far one my favorite photographers here on RUclips and i just freaking love your work.
Dearest Peter. That is the video I definitely like most of all you have done so far. It shows your infinite passion so much which one can also see in your work. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hugs from Germany and keep on going enjoying your hobby. Jens
This make so much sense to me and strikes a cord. Just like you when I first had work published I started to become obsessed with evolving to something that I'm not.
Thanks Peter... it is a great talk, and one that I am sure to come back many times to hear. It's an important talk, very supportive to hear one of your favorite "successful" photographers point to the love art comes first. ))) Great video! )))
Thank you Peter for sharing your thoughts. While I have followed you for awhile and have benefited from watching you work this particular video is very moving for me. Cheers to much future success but especially to making many more memories
I loved this video. While I do want to build my photography into a business, I still love concept days where I do a free shoot with a model just to create something fun that we both can engage in and are happy with. The moment you fully monetize something you love, you take the passion out and start getting burnt out.
Thank you for the video and commentary. You have found yourself thru your art, and your art makes you who you are. Your rant was very simple yet wise and insightful. I look forward to your next posting. Thanks again.
Hi Peter. Thank you for this video (and all the others). You have articulated extremely well what I try to explain to others. Photography is a hobby for me and my joy is getting images that make myself (and hopefully others) say "oh wow". I do the odd event and undercharge (pocket money for new camera gear) for what I am capable of but I get the opportunity to work with a variety of subjects and hearing afterwards "please, please send me the photos" puts a smile on my face every time. The videos that you and Bec have put together during the covid isolation have helped me to grow as a photographer so once again, thank you.
Peter, you have never spoken truer words! I've taken a number of family photos that have made it out of my phone and into frames on family members' and my walls and no amount of money could buy the pleasure and pride I get from the way they want to display my art in their homes and, most importantly, the pleasure and the smiles I get from gazing on them every day. You can't put a price on things that, no matter what slings and arrows have been thrown your way during the day, send you off to bed with a big old smile on your face!
As a former pro-photographer with my own business - now retired...your words really speak to where I am these days. I started decades ago as a hobbyist - gradually found a way to make a livelihood with it - and eventually grew tired and lost the passion for it. When I finally closed my business I put the camera down for quite a while until the enthusiasm returned. I likened it a bit to writer's block. But the passion and pleasure came back (thankfully) and I re-connected with what I loved about photography. And your words described it perfectly. These days I only shoot for myself with no desire or expectations of selling any of it - although I constantly get 'advised' I should. The enjoyment now for me is in the journey...the experience of taking the shot. The memory of what an abandoned building smelled like, the sounds within...the little details I saw in-person and then captured in images to appreciate again later. Or a landscape...or whatever. I just wanted to thank you for putting my exact thoughts and sentiments into words - I was enthralled with your video from start to finish (and admired many of your shots along the way).
Thank you so much for this, Peter. You may think of this as a rant, but I see it as a clear voice ringing out through all the hype and noise in the RUclips photography space. Well done!
Hear me out. Your rants help you express what you're feeling and what you're thinking. For someone like me, those rants ground me and help me find the right words to explain what photography means to me. I couldn't explain how much photography meant to me for a long time. I'm not in this for the money at all, but I find myself looking forward to the money when I THINK it's important. I love your videos because of your POV. Most photographers I know only want the money and that's fine for them. I don't know too many photographers who can appreciate a photo like you. This is why I subscribe and continue to watch, learn and listen.
Thank you, Peter Coulson! So much wisdom! Your Portraits are stunning beautiful! The moments you saw and captured... If the art you are into, is what touches you, wow! Thank you for sharing your passion with us. I did miss you last year in Switzerland. Hope, you come back again to Europe this or next year!
So well said Peter,, your photos capture so much, especially with Bec,, But what makes more sense is your motiviation for doing what you do.. thank you
Thanks Peter, I stumbled upon your channel a few weeks ago and as a 'hobbyist' landscape and nature photographer I became interested in the 'other side', i.e. portrait/studio work and have watched with interest since. This video I watched today almost expecting a lecture of some sort but very quickly realised your passion for photography as an art form, this talk and explanation has inspired me and I'm sure many others. Thank you for a very straight forward, realistic and I'm sure a heartfelt look at why we keep pressing that button, until now I'm sure many of us didn't realise the real reason we do this and keep doing it. Fantastic words that are very much appreciated.
From one man to another Peter Coulson. I love you man. Just a glimpse of what is in your heart, I feel as if these words came from my heart too. Thank you 🙏
Great video Peter, love the work and what was shared today. So many people chase the gear, not the art, story and memories. The key have always been the experience of the subject and the photographer and what is taken away from the shoot. Gear can be toys, the experience and feeling is also the outcome to strive for, everything else will come in time. Great stuff
Hi Peter, I read an interview with you in a magazine. My dad was a big time fly fisherman and he taught me fly fishing when i was just above toddler age. We took some super fly fishing trips together, and on Father's days after I finally had some nickels I could rub together, I treated him to charter boat fishing trips or fly fishing trips in different parts of the world --- some of the best times of my life :) Where I think you really excel as an artist is your ability to capture the raw emotion of the models ---- it happens immediately, or after some conjuring or when you get models to drop those veils of protection and they flow into comfort zones, albeit expressing vulnerability or desire or wonder.
The best and most sincere explanation of photography I have ever heard. Too many "experts" stalk social media with their textbook opinions about what photography is, too bad they don't have your experience and understanding.
Thank you for sharing this Peter. Rants like this are very important. I often say I want to make money with this hobby, but just today I took photos of friends at work that were off the cuff and we all enjoyed the moment. Thanks again. Cheers!!
Very well articulated, Peter. Creative vision and love for the medium absolutely has to come first. Technique builds on that but is nothing by itself. Thankfully, you have both.
I truly love they joy I get from taking photos. This is my hobby and I would never want it to become my job. There is a difference in making photos because you want to opposed to making them because you have to. Occasionally, I will accept a photoshoot for payment, but I still control the creation. This is my hobby to enjoy my retirement.
wonderful channel, I look forward to learning all I can from it, your mastery of painting a picture within a picture using shadows is so intriguing that I look at how to frame a picture in new ways. Your attitude on work flow is so relaxing, taking complex situations yet spinning new creations out of those opportunities that is so inspiring. I could stare at your work for hours. And you don't come off as someone who has something to prove, you just go with best flow. I wish you the best and hope you earn money at the next level, whatever that is for you. Your studio is amazing, it really makes me think about building my own.
Fantastic lesson Peter. That first image at 2:31 of Bec has to be one of my favorites. The skin tone is so amazing. The way the tones flow so smoothly and naturally from darker to lighter areas just blows me away. Thanks for the inspiration you always provide. Have a great day!
Dear Peter, thanks for sharing these thoughts. Its very timely for me as I am looking at whether I could go professional or not. The business side is at odds with the art and passion and your considered comments are helping me to look at the “balance” between running a business and not losing the art and passion that I get out of shooting for me. Thank you so much.
That's the most eloquent, measured, and beautifully delivered rant I've ever heard, truly inspirational. Your work is a big part of my enjoyment of the hobby, and I'm lucky enough that someone saw my images and asked me to work with them, so I leave my proper job next year for a future doing what I love. I totally resonate with your camera club comments - what do they know 😂.
Thank you for this insite of your thinking. This is great. I really like your view. The memories of the making of the picture is that what counts. The story behind it, that is what only you got. Thank you. Great video.
thank you for this! thank you so much. i have always loved watching you work with bec and without. love your explanations and when something is right you glow with excitement. been a fan for a long time. you are an artist and an idol. thank you again for making content!
Peter, this is one of your best videos, ever. As I listened to this, I couldn't help but feel how exactly it describes how I feel about photography. This just rocked my world. Thank you so much!
Well said sir! I feel that way with my drone videos and even any photo I feel I nailed with my phone! Always enjoy your videos for the insight but even more for the natural chill flow of your process and the way you and your subjects seem you get in the right place to capture that right moment. Thank you
Great video. As someone who doesnt have a lot of spare money for the latest and greatest cameras, its reassuring to hear what I've always felt which is that photography is about the feeling, about the memory. I have shots taken 20 years ago on early digital that I still look back at now and love and I can look at those photos and remember precious moments I might otherwise have forgotten.
This has to be the best video by far that explains why photographers do what the do why take an image/photo that has no meaning, has no connection, photography is an art , the reward for capturing a truly thoughtful and meaningful image is far more rewarding and important than getting paid for it.. “passion, love and connection”
Thanks, Peter. This is one of your best videos, and i appreciate you sharing what photography means and what we should strive for as photographers........so deep
Peter, you have said what photography is better than anyone I have ever heard in the the last 53 years of my photography career.....your thoughts are exactly like mine......having wrestled with not making 'Money' with y personal work all these years, and only being paid for commercial work has been hard many times. but I would not trade the experience for anything and would do it all over again.... Thank You so Much.....an old photographer still looking for images to capture.... Best Wishes, Paul
Thank you Peter, for another insightful take on photography. I decided to try street photography on the Southbank in London last August. I took around 50 photos thinking a handful might be reasonable. I ended up converting 38 to B&W and putting them in a video (with my own music). The whole process was so much fun. Your video encourages us all to keep the fun in photography and to enjoy our own pictures. Thanks again.
These "why I do it" videos do more for me than all the "how to do it" videos all over RUclips. I'm 63 and living on Social Security and retirement money. Nailed it
Photography has been the most popular hobby for decades. Congratulations on learning how to enjoy it !
perfect ❤️
Thanks David
This is not a rant.
These are life lessons and I would love more of this in the future.
Thanks heaps, more coming :)

can relate to that
Thank you Peter! The clarity this video brings to me on so many levels is remarkable! Thank you again!

Hope this helps you with your future directions
one of your best info talks regarding what photography is and can be. Over the years my archives are full of memories and many more to come .
I got a bachelor of fine art (BFA) degree in photography back in 1980. And that’s why I work in the pharmaceutical industry today! I’ve continued making photos ever since, and still don’t regret not trying to make a living at it. That would have been extremely hard, and would’ve ruined it for me.

I'm at the 5-minute mark of this video and it made me a subscriber. This reminder hit me in the chest. Thank you. I needed it, everything about it.
Thanks so much, welcome :)
Thank you for this message. I have several photographer friends who have fallen into that "I gotta make money at this" camp.

You are awesome, Peter, and Thanks for taking the time ,and making it more meaningful for us. 👍💯
I appreciate that thank you
Thank you Peter. I love your pictures before watching this chapter and after even more! I understand more why I love so much making pictures and whats going in me in that process.. Amazing "rant" mate! Hell of lots of life lessons and emotions you share with us, the audience. Thank you again.
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it
Thank you. This is a wonderful monologue that I know I needed to hear. I truly appreciate what you’ve shared here. Thank you.
Thanks, Glad it was helpful
Peter ! You are a big inspiration for me and many more people that love good quality photography, I'm in my 60s and I just started this journey and I can see that I'm developing my own signature style, I want to thank you for so many technical and inspirational tips, One day I will shake your hand and say thank you in person.
Thank you so much 🥰
Thank you for sharing your passoin and experience with all of us. This is one of your best videos you have given us. I really appreciate your honesty and all of the joy you put into each of your videos. It shows in the way you work with Bec and the models. Your rant as you called it was perfectly timed for me today, it inspires me to stay true to my vision and keep taking pictures.
You are so welcome, thanks so much
THANK YOU Peter! It is content like this that makes your channel my most treasured contributions to my feed!
Wow, thanks
Peter I am so glad I found your RUclips channel. Thank you for expressing what I feel. I've been doing photography for 50 plus years and will continue to do so just for the enjoyment of it all. Keep posting, creating and allowing us to join you.
Fantastic, my pleasure
Just what I needed to hear. I get it now for the first time and would live to make money, but it will never replace the love of creating images.
Thanks heaps Peter, more rants to come
Again my thanks to you for sharing your thoughts and views! Viewing this video has made me remember why I got deep into photography. To capture the moment and preserve the memory, making money would be nice and a bonus but you reminded me why I do it!!! Thank you Sir so very much!!!
Thanks again Peter
Peter - thanks for covering this topic. Over the last 2 weeks I have been seriously struggling with the idea of charging for shoots (though, I haven’t figured out an approach that makes me comfortable). After watching your video, I am thinking that my struggle is not so much around how much to charge, but instead about the loss of passion that comes from shooting as a hobby. So your words are something to reflect on; but they came at the perfect time. Cheers!
I'm glad it was helpful
Thanks James
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I am thankful for my day job but it’s a high stress, long hour job that is challenging. Photography has been something that makes working, worth it. I have had external pressures and also pressured myself to make money from photography. The problem is that I am so limited in time. Hearing this from you helps me confirm that it’s okay to shoot what I want to shoot. Thank you.
Looking at photo images captured 30+ years ago, spark the memory recall of that time. Like going back in time. Have photos that family took of my younger years, the streets, buildings, cars of yesteryear - Breath taking.
This was really great. Your work and the manner in which you interact with your models has been a huge inspiration and help to me.
Thanks heaps, taking photos to make yourself happy is far more important than money :)
Thank you for the kind words. Photographers are visual beings. Perceptive, sensitive, creative. This often doesn't come hand in hand with a businessman skills or even communication skills. While earning money matters, the example you give is freeing and inspirational
Thank you
Thank you for this video. i really been struggling about this particular subject for the past few years.
Jens
Thanks so much Jens, really appreciate it
This make so much sense to me and strikes a cord. Just like you when I first had work published I started to become obsessed with evolving to something that I'm not.
I'm glad you liked it
Oh soooo refreshing this kind of talk …. You, Peter are a giant among photographers- Thanks for all.
Thanks heaps Criss
Thanks Peter... it is a great talk, and one that I am sure to come back many times to hear. It's an important talk, very supportive to hear one of your favorite "successful" photographers point to the love art comes first. ))) Great video! )))
Fantastic reminder to most of our “why” we love to capture these moments in time, perspective and guidance as usual! Thank you kindly!
You are so welcome!
Thank you Peter for sharing your thoughts. While I have followed you for awhile and have benefited from watching you work this particular video is very moving for me. Cheers to much future success but especially to making many more memories
You are very welcome
I loved this video. While I do want to build my photography into a business, I still love concept days where I do a free shoot with a model just to create something fun that we both can engage in and are happy with. The moment you fully monetize something you love, you take the passion out and start getting burnt out.
YES
Thank you for the video and commentary. You have found yourself thru your art, and your art makes you who you are. Your rant was very simple yet wise and insightful. I look forward to your next posting. Thanks again.
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much Derek, awesome to hear you love your hobby and glad we helped you during isolation
I’ve watched your videos for quite some time, the comments that you make in this video have reinvigorated my respect for your work. Thank you.
Thank you so much 🙂 I appreciate that
Peter, you have never spoken truer words!
Thanks so much, glad to hear your got your passion back :)
Thank you so much for this, Peter. You may think of this as a rant, but I see it as a clear voice ringing out through all the hype and noise in the RUclips photography space. Well done!
You're very welcome
Timeless observations straight from the heart. Thanks.
Thank you
Hear me out.
Thank you so much
One of the best videos I’ve seen. Thank you Peter, and watching you work is amazing.
Wow, thank you!
Simply love your photography and now I understand, the reason behind this excellent art. It's pure passion.
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you, Peter Coulson! So much wisdom! Your Portraits are stunning beautiful! The moments you saw and captured...
If the art you are into, is what touches you, wow! Thank you for sharing your passion with us.
I did miss you last year in Switzerland. Hope, you come back again to Europe this or next year!
Many thanks! We will be back in Europe in May :)
So well said Peter,, your photos capture so much, especially with Bec,, But what makes more sense is your motiviation for doing what you do.. thank you
Thanks heaps
Best talk about photography that i heard in the last 20 years. Thank you for this reminder Peter.
Thank you so much
Thank you, Peter! Your work always inspires me.
But, this video, inspired me even more!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much Bill, glad you enjoyed it
From one man to another Peter Coulson. I love you man. Just a glimpse of what is in your heart, I feel as if these words came from my heart too. Thank you 🙏
Wow, thank you so much ❤️
Great video Peter, love the work and what was shared today. So many people chase the gear, not the art, story and memories. The key have always been the experience of the subject and the photographer and what is taken away from the shoot. Gear can be toys, the experience and feeling is also the outcome to strive for, everything else will come in time. Great stuff
Yes exactly, thanks for listening
Hi Peter, I read an interview with you in a magazine. My dad was a big time fly fisherman and he taught me fly fishing when i was just above toddler age. We took some super fly fishing trips together, and on Father's days after I finally had some nickels I could rub together, I treated him to charter boat fishing trips or fly fishing trips in different parts of the world --- some of the best times of my life :)
Where I think you really excel as an artist is your ability to capture the raw emotion of the models ---- it happens immediately, or after some conjuring or when you get models to drop those veils of protection and they flow into comfort zones, albeit expressing vulnerability or desire or wonder.
Fly fishing use to be a massive part of my life. Once I get the models trust they drop there vail and show me the real person, that's when I click
I came to Peter for the photography tips and stayed for the Wisdom. Thanks Peter.
Thanks for coming
The best and most sincere explanation of photography I have ever heard. Too many "experts" stalk social media with their textbook opinions about what photography is, too bad they don't have your experience and understanding.
Thanks heaps :)
Thank you for sharing this Peter. Rants like this are very important. I often say I want to make money with this hobby, but just today I took photos of friends at work that were off the cuff and we all enjoyed the moment. Thanks again. Cheers!!
Thanks
Very well articulated, Peter. Creative vision and love for the medium absolutely has to come first. Technique builds on that but is nothing by itself. Thankfully, you have both.
Many thanks!
No matter how much recognition this video gets it deserves more, and it's exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you.
Thanks so much
Amazing, Peter! Beautiful video and compilation of photos.
Glad you enjoyed it
I truly love they joy I get from taking photos. This is my hobby and I would never want it to become my job. There is a difference in making photos because you want to opposed to making them because you have to. Occasionally, I will accept a photoshoot for payment, but I still control the creation. This is my hobby to enjoy my retirement.
Thank you for this one. I connected to this one for sure. Love seeing your true work.
You are so welcome
8:09, just amazing Peter. The facial expressions, the move and the fall off... Fascinating!
wonderful channel, I look forward to learning all I can from it, your mastery of painting a picture within a picture using shadows is so intriguing that I look at how to frame a picture in new ways.
Thanks so much Charlie, glad you enjoyed it. The image at 2:31 is of a model I used to shoot called Zoe :)
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Oh.. thanks for the correction. Looks a bit like Bec to me!!
every couple of months, I will re-watch this video. Thank You, Peter.
Thank you
Dear Peter, thanks for sharing these thoughts. Its very timely for me as I am looking at whether I could go professional or not. The business side is at odds with the art and passion and your considered comments are helping me to look at the “balance” between running a business and not losing the art and passion that I get out of shooting for me. Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching
That's the most eloquent, measured, and beautifully delivered rant I've ever heard, truly inspirational. Your work is a big part of my enjoyment of the hobby, and I'm lucky enough that someone saw my images and asked me to work with them, so I leave my proper job next year for a future doing what I love. I totally resonate with your camera club comments - what do they know 😂.
Awesome :) thanks so much
Thank you once again Peter, for being an inspiration that makes a difference for me to carry on doing what I do the way I do it and learning everyday.
Thanks so much, I appreciate it
Perhaps the most important and relevant video of yours that I have seen. Your words are so true. Thanks for reminding me why I love photography.
Thanks so much
These honestly do lots for me and it's a major reason why I learn a lot from what you do and apply it to my own.
So happy to hear that
Mr. Peter Coulson. You're a fantastic photographer. I truly love your work. Enjoy every minute of life. Peace.
❤️ Thank you Nelson
Probably my favorite video of yours EVER!!! Thank you for sharing you thoughts Peter. This one really hit home…
No worries, thanks so much
Thank you for this insite of your thinking. This is great. I really like your view. The memories of the making of the picture is that what counts. The story behind it, that is what only you got. Thank you. Great video.
Thanks so much
thank you for this! thank you so much. i have always loved watching you work with bec and without. love your explanations and when something is right you glow with excitement. been a fan for a long time. you are an artist and an idol. thank you again for making content!
Thank you so much, really appreciate it
Peter, this is one of your best videos, ever. As I listened to this, I couldn't help but feel how exactly it describes how I feel about photography. This just rocked my world. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much
Well said sir! I feel that way with my drone videos and even any photo I feel I nailed with my phone!
Always enjoy your videos for the insight but even more for the natural chill flow of your process and the way you and your subjects seem you get in the right place to capture that right moment.
Thank you
Thanks heaps
Great video. As someone who doesnt have a lot of spare money for the latest and greatest cameras, its reassuring to hear what I've always felt which is that photography is about the feeling, about the memory. I have shots taken 20 years ago on early digital that I still look back at now and love and I can look at those photos and remember precious moments I might otherwise have forgotten.
Thats awesome
This has to be the best video by far that explains why photographers do what the do why take an image/photo that has no meaning, has no connection, photography is an art , the reward for capturing a truly thoughtful and meaningful image is far more rewarding and important than getting paid for it.. “passion, love and connection”
Thank you
Thanks, Peter. This is one of your best videos, and i appreciate you sharing what photography means and what we should strive for as photographers........so deep
Thanks heaps
Spoken like a true artist…thank you Peter for sharing your heart and soul. This moved me to tears…much love and inspiration! Greetings from MIAMI
Glad you enjoyed it Danny
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing these thoughts with us.
Peter, you have said what photography is better than anyone I have ever heard
in the the last 53 years of my photography career.....your thoughts are exactly
like mine......having wrestled with not making 'Money' with y personal work all
these years, and only being paid for commercial work has been hard many times.
but I would not trade the experience for anything and would do it all over again....
Thank You so Much.....an old photographer still looking for images to capture....
Best
Wishes, Paul
Thanks heaps Paul
Thank you Peter, for another insightful take on photography. I decided to try street photography on the Southbank in London last August. I took around 50 photos thinking a handful might be reasonable. I ended up converting 38 to B&W and putting them in a video (with my own music). The whole process was so much fun. Your video encourages us all to keep the fun in photography and to enjoy our own pictures. Thanks again.
Thats awesome thanks
Thank you Peter. Wisdom, clarity and passion alongside some wonderful images.
You are very welcome
