Triangle Strategy - Nintendo Switch Tech Review - Final Fantasy Tactics for the New Generation?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- The classic strategy RPG design of Final Fantasy Tactics - and Tactics Ogre - meets new technology in Triangle Strategy. It's an exclusive for Switch, coming from key members of the team behind Octopath Traveler with a similar end result in its visuals. Unreal Engine 4 adds key effects like depth of field not possible in previous generations - and once more Switch's huge RPG catalogue expands with a quality release.

To save time & budget, Square-Enix constructed their 3D map models with efficient triangle strategies
Easily my favourite game of the year so far. I expected some competent nostalgia bait at best from Square-Enix, but Triangle Strategy is a great game on it's own.
"not elden ring? you arent a real gamer if you perfer this weeb shit"
- Elden Ring fan Probably
Really? I felt that the combat system was rather shallow and lacking in any sort of feeling of "mastery".
@@RasenRendanX I know you're joking, but in all honesty: I finished Elden Ring and I think it ranks among the weakest FromSoftware games for a number of reasons. My biggest gripe are the enemy and boss designs, which are some of the worst From has ever produced.
So yeah, Triangle Strategy > Elden Ring.
@@agromchung I liked the combat, mostly because the characters felt unique and the mission design complemented the different abilites very well. I agree that Triangle Strategy is a more basic game when compared to Tactics Ogre or FFT, but still a step above the more recent Fire Emblems imho. To me it feels like a nice middle ground between FFT and FE.
@@agromchung I mean shallow compared to what honestly, I'd honestly say it's got more going on than FFT overall, it just focuses a lot more on tactics than rpg elements. This focus honestly makes the game harder since you can't make overpowered units where you can in FFT. What game in the genre did you find so much better?
One thing missed was that tiles sometimes do odd things during dialogue phase. It would degrade and improve in appearance during same conversation. Overall great review and appreciated that you look at this gem
Definitely noticed this too during capture for this video. It could be down to the dynamic resolution? You can see the pixels shift as you switch to and from the menus as well.
@@DigitalFoundry Another thing missed is the sprite-scaling issued mentioned in the Octopath Traveler DF video. It's the exact same in this game. Hopefully there'll be a PC port down the line that improves upon this issue and the blurry visuals.
Speaking of PC, the game can be emulated at a native 60fps there (though sadly the visuals can't really be improved in any way, even at 2x or 4x rendering).
These kinds of games are the few where 30fps doesn't bother me. Will definitely check this out later on. Thanks for covering this DF!
I played turn based RPGs on PS3 which ran at like 20 fps and I don't care as well
Easily my current GOTY for 2022 and for good reason. Great job by Tom as always with the FFT breakdown, a delight.
I just finish this game and wow it was incredible. There are a ton of story sequences that slow the pacing of the game but other that I love it.
The character design is from Naoki Ikushima, it is just inspired by Akihiko Yoshida's style. Excellent video all in all! 😃
They didn’t research that part it seems
@@scuppo why would they need to? He's not the artist on this.
@@hailrugal2695 they said he was or didn’t you watch the video
@@scuppo I was talking about the inspiration or can you not read?

Well Octopath Traveller was locked to 720p so the fact this can hit up to 900p is great! Unreal Engine's started a little rough on Switch, but over the years has constantly been improving.
Epic's has been optimizing UE4 on Switch multiple times over the years, Fornite went from below 720p to 900p so it's nice to see other studios getting better with their UE titles.
Great game so far, I would equate it more to Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 1&2 rather than the older PS version of the concept.
FF Tactics really needs a remake for modern hardware, it would be awesome!
I'd rather see Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together.
@@TybudX Knight of Lodis is way better.
@@Vulpas I also think it is the most customizable and balanced tactics ogre game but the enemy turns took forever. If they remaster the game with qol improvements it would be the best strategy rpg ever.
Rarely do I touch RPGs but this one looks pretty cool, great art direction too.
Really recommend this game. Also in case you don't know if you wanna play it: There is quite a lengthy demo (2-3 hours) on the eshop available.
Tactics Ogre : Let Us Clint Together gang IN THE PLACE /o/
Love that there is a new wave of Tactics RPG on the way these days !!!
Will wait for a PC version. I loved Octopath on my switch, but I loved it even more on my PC at 4K 60fps.
I think the whole blurryness of the visuals comes from the bilinear filter they applied to the realtime graphics. The game was sharp and clean back in 2021 when they released the first demo (TRIANGLE STRATEGY Debut Demo). I'm a big fan of this 2D-HD art style but it can't imagine why they felt it was necessary to blur this retro look. The great news is that it can be easily fixed if they add an option to completely turn off the bilinear filter. Hope they hear the fans and make this an option because there are full forum threads where people are complaining about the blurryness of the visuals. People who love the game (myself included).
(The strange thing is that they already made an option to turn off the heavy vignettes and depth of field - but those are key visual elements of this 2D-HD art style.)
Also on the title screen everyone can check how the game looks without the heavy bilinear filter which blures the whole picture. That's how the game should look by default I think. Pixellated edges and textures, sharp look.
The first thing I thought (in docked mode) was that it looks nice because of the lack of bilinear filtering, giving textures and water a nice PSX-style look. The sprites look pretty crisp too.
However, when playing in handheld mode, the first thing I wondered was if there was an additional layer of FXAA added, the game looks very blurry.
You can disable the depth of field effect in the options (alongside darkening of edges of the screen), but I found out it looks better with it applied.
Cool seeing a game like this get covered!
This game is fantastic and I'd say it's better and feels right in handheld mode!
That's nice to hear, I actually love my Switch Oled and I rly want it for this now.
I've had it for about a week and it's amazing, gives me hope for the 'front mission' remake 🙏🏻
Thanks for taking the time to cover this game! It is an absolute gem and one I hope will become a cult classic in time. Loving my time with it.
This is a modern day classic.
Thanks for the review, I hope more people play it as a result
I'm a month late to this but a slight correction at 1:50 - Triangle Strategy's character artworks are done by Naoki Ikushima, who has also done character design work for Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default (where Akihiko Yoshida has also done design work)
This game is one of the best this year
All these HD 2D games really make me want a Chrono Trigger remake in this style
Rather have a Sonic Mania style remaster
Im stunned to see a video from you guys on this but very happy that it gets more spotlight. it is a delightful game.
The Character Designer is not Akihiko Yoshida but Naoki Ikushima, the Octopath Traveler character designer. I don't blame you, their styles are very similar.
I really love that game(probably my GOTY), currently trying on hard now, but fps can dip quite heavily in a few later combats. I don't mind that, but could mostly see early footage here?
don't want to spoil anything but on a later fight on a bridge fighting where you are "surrounded" it can decrease fps a lot even without zooming out.
Bigger fire effects also tank the frame rate. I could practically hear my switch screaming in a mission that lead to a building being burned down
This looks like FFT and Vandal Hearts had a baby.
Outstanding game.
another great digital foundry tech review, I did notice some frame drops when the action gets heavy, really enjoying this title
Wish they'd just release any of the Final Fantasy games in this engine!
FFVII remake is in this engine...
@@derptyderp5287
I think the person means the HD 2D style.
It's perfect for old SNES-era RPGs
i believe Dragon quest 3 remake is in this engine. it will be HD-2D
I'd rather have the fully 2D pixel art of the originals just be improved to be appealing on HDTV's but still fit what the artists of the originals wanted to go for plus quality of life features, same as Sonic Mania
Artistic stylization>cool new 3D effects for old school RPG's any day
Such a great game. My favorite SRPG of all time now, even above Fire Emblem, and I don't say that lightly
Better than shining force ? This looks amazing but Fire Emblem i just cant get into
wow both the new and old games has such a charming visual style i don't usually like these type of games but especially the old one gave me some ps1 nostalgia !
7:55 you can turn off the depth of field and the vignette effect in the options.
Does disabling depth of field improve resolution scaling?
I find this game to have quite poor performance, so I was surprised to see this tech review being so positive. From my experience, I would give Triangle Strategy on Switch a 5/10 for performance. Makes me wonder if DF has access to a different version of the game or something.
I'm running the North American eShop version of the game, tried it installed on internal memory and on high speed micro SD, on both a launch-model Switch and an OLED Switch (both in docked mode). All combinations had the same poor performance. Lots of framerate dips all throughout the game. And since the game's speed is directly tied to the framerate, there is a lot of very noticeable slowdown where you can feel the controls becoming unresponsive as it happens. It's surprisingly bad, especially when Octopath Traveler on Switch didn't have such significant issues and the graphics are basically the same.
Loving this game. Would love to see a PC port later but I definitely am going to replay this game again when I finish my first playthrough. 😁
100% will come to PC given Octopath and Bravely 2 did.
Xbox Game Pass will have it soon enough. That's what Im waiting for...
It's not quickly becoming, it's already my dream rpg console.
It really is quite the visual treat! Loved every bit of gameplay, already completed my second playthrough!
We bought this (specifically, my daughter bought it) after playing through the substantial demo. The voice acting is melodramatic in just the way you want it to be and the strategy gameplay proves to be really interesting.
Final Fantasy Tactics was awesome but Vandal Hearts is the game that got me into that style of RPG.
So much blood!
Oh right I can say this the one time I had seen the framerate actually tank was if you decide to keep Roland safe from Aesfrost and burn the houses it chugs when the fire effect is on but returns once it stops.
The game is amazing. I played most of the consoles srpg and is a hi mark but still think A2 is the best of all.
Could not stop playing A2, one of my all time favourite games.
Indeed an overlooked and underappreciated masterpiece
What is A2? And could you share your 5 favourite SRPGs on switch? Iam looking for some new games =)..

Triangle was such a beautiful and amazing game. The gameplay and story are magnificent. This is one of the few good Square Enix games.
“Few good square Enix games” wth are you smoking?
Yeah, nowadays, good games from them are rare. And when they are, it's because they managed to be good in spite of being published by Square-Enix. Others aren't so lucky (Avengers, Outriders, Babylon's Fall, and so much more, victims of the absolute greed of SQ-Enix)
I don't blame the studios devs behind, it's the corporate brass taking the decision at Square-Enix that aren't capable of a single good fucking decision.
They should be praying to Yoshida-san for FFXIV every day because without it, that company would've gone under about 15 times in the last 5-6 years.
@@nemesis8508 The newer games from Square aren't good.
@@Allyouknow5820 Exactly! I would even argue FF7 Remake falls into that category. The last good games from Square are Nier, Triangle Strategy and FF 14 (and 14 is only good because WoW is terrible, so they don't have competition).
Game is good but far from amazing game IMO. The mechanic is simplified. No class systems like in FFT. Plot is shallow and game is kinda short. Not much secrets to discover apart from story paths. FFT is like 10 and Triangle Strategy is like 5. There is essentially nothing to do apart from doing mock battles which are boring before the final fight. No gears equipment to collect etc.
Glad that Tom is also making semi reviews/opinion besides the tech analisis.
Great video!
The attack support mechanic comes directly from one of the best T-RPG of the PSX: Vandal Hearts.
Triangle Strategy's water looks better than Pokemon Arceus' lol
When talking about SRPGs, Disgaea almost never gets mentioned. That series had a large influence on many SRPGs to come.
In my eyes Disgaea and Fire Emblem are the icons SRPG, kinda like how Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy (1 - 10)
Disgaea is unmatched!
The game is great, but damn do the blurry pixels bug me on the character sprites. I hope they have a PC version at some point that sharpens up the visuals.
how did you guys get the text to have good contrast against the parchment color backgrounds? its nigh unreadable on my TV, because it just isn't bold enough
Heads up, Naoki Ikushima did the character art for Triangle Strategy, not Yoshida.
The PC version is inevitable, right?
Octopath in 4K was incredible, I can't go back to sub 1080p.
I would LOVE a new FF Tactics Advance for Switch!!!
I didn't realize you could rotate the camera like that, it looks so cool...uh why is that the thing that's going to convince me to get this lmao
I was surprised you guys did this one. I usually haven't considered buying a game before you cover the game but this time I've already had a couple endings in this one.
Happy to see that others are really enjoying this game. I’ve been pleasantly surprised.
Vandal Hearts... forever forgotten...
Hey, I know it's maybe not as big a release, but Rune Factory 5 just came out and while I think it's a great game it has some serious performance issues, even after they added an adaptive resolution via patch. Might make a good video?
Thank you for still doing analyses of switch games. Switch is my main platform (as it is for millions more than PS5 and XSX) and I still do concern myself with performance even though I don't expect 60fps 1080p. The point is to generally know whether to wait for patches, or whether to buy on another platform if available (if the difference is significant between platforms)
Watching this, I thought that maybe RUclips was butchering the video quality but the menus and text all appear pin sharp. This looks surprisingly blurry, even for 720p-900p. I'll still give the demo a shot though!
Still a pretty awesome time to be a gamer if you ask me
I could have sworn that FFT came out in 1998. I thought I got it immediately. Oh well, I assume they did their research.
This is an amzaing idea by square and the details are very nice. but I REALLY hate that blur or odd fuzziness to it.
Yeah, it looks like someone smeared vaseline over the screen.
@@neoasura I don't think I could have explained it better LOL. Just give us a slider or a option to turn it on or off. And I'd be content
Just like Octopath Traveller and Bravely Default 3 we'll no doubt get a PC port. Very excited for when that happens!
should i wait for the pc version or get the switch version?
I hope it comes to PC like Octopath Traveler
Analysis of Hot Wheels Unleashed on the Switch would be very appreciated!
How do you like that game? I heard it's surprisingly good on Switch, and pretty fun too.
@@docArr666 I don't have it yet. I wanted to see a comparison to see what platform to get it on.

@@nickmotsarsky4382 depends if it has a native ps5 app or not. if not, your laptop is still better.
I have no interest in playing this game, but the visual style alone makes me a little interested. What a cool-looking game visually.
i'm begging you Digital Foundry! DO STRANGER OF PARADISE!!!!
I have been waiting them to make a video out of this game ever since launch.
I just wish it ran at 60fps, it could have been beautiful.
I first played FF tactics on the PSP Version which has its own enhancements like new CGI cutscenes and better effects, and it wowed me at the time when I played it in middle school. It was my most played psp game.
Otherwise I think I will buy this game as I hardly use my switch!
0:02 is that stick drift
I hope they make a sequel of this title with deeper gameplay, as well as a Final Fantasy Tactics remake.
What a gorgeous tribute to its genre heritage!
The best thing about FFT was the Job System, which this game does not have.
At least that weird effect where the whole screen sways and wrinkles (for lack of a better word) is gone.
Everyone talking about Strategy RPGs: Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Gears Tactics, XCom
Front Mission: 😢
I can't speak for the full version of the game, since I don't own it yet, but I know the demo has the option to disable depth of field.
I'm still waiting on the WRC 10 Fia world rally championship for the switch analysis.
They're coming out with a Octopath Traveler II game, now let's have a Triangle Strategy II game.
I'm... Surprised at how little time is passed on the framerate side of things in this video, to be completely honest. In my experience with the game, the framerate chugs significantly with an array of actions (like when breaking owl statues, or summoning rain) to an uncomfortable degree.
On your NG+ playthrough, don't break them, for added challenge. Yes, the frame rate drops hard, but it only lasts one round, and it's easy to ignore it given the strength of the game as a whole.
Haha, already done! But there are enough moments in the game that felt like they were in the 10-20fps range (especially when sped-up) that the tutorial battle shown here was a kind of baffling decision to me, that's all
the fact it has srpg battles and town navigation but they didn't reference shining force as an inspiration in the intro is mad disrespectful. Sega already made this type of game in 1991.
Great video!! I'm loving it so far.
The Diofield Chronicle is coming out this year btw not 2023. Much love!
TS is a great game, but there are some flaws IMO:
- FPS can dip quite a lot in later combats
- It doesn´t look that good on a big TV - handheld is the way to go
- The game relies heavily on encampment missions to level up characters, which can slow down the story quite a lot
- I think the number of troops you can use on a map is quite small, it ends up forcing you to sit out some interesting ones in favor of the heavy hitters
- there was only one bug that I found, but it happened during the final scene of the golden route ending. It forced the software to close and send nintendo an error message. I tried it once more and it worked.
Outstanding work, Tom.:-)
Can't wait til this game hits PC/SteamDeck
PsOne is my nostalgia lmao I played it so much as a kid
Really wish this games would come out physical in Playstation, at least they have released on PC and look better than ever but would love to own them too.
This studio will give us lots of unique games, I'm sure!
There was one level where there was lots of water and the FPS dipped like crazy but so far otherwise it runs well.
FFT is by far my favorite game of all time, so I was looking forward to this. I tried the demo and I don't think I have the patience required for this game. I think there was 1 combat scene in the first hour of the game and I tried to focus, but I just can't remember any names these days so I was completely lost and I have not a clue what happened in the story. Not sure if I should keep going and skip all the dialog and text or just give up. I did really enjoy the combat, imo no game truly matches FFT and Tactics Ogre and this might be the first I have found that does.
We've got same initial thoughts man. The game really starts super slow, it gets better as you progress but still really slow compared to FFT.
Anyway overall, I found the game to be really good. Definitely up there with FFT (Haven't played Tactics Ogre). Highly recommended!
I would not skip the dialogue because that is a core feature of the game (you have to make decisions) and there is indeed a lot of it. I will say that after a couple of hours you will not have any more trouble remembering names and places. It is just the beginning of the game where they have to set up the world. The story is very good, especially after a spoiler event that happens. If you play just for the combat than you miss out on literally 50 % of the game.
Final Fantasy Tactics has become the "Persona 5 of TRPG", lol 😂
Have you guy do PC vs Switch review?
Feel like I've grown out of SRPG's, but this does look interesting
This made me wander... What could FF Tactics have been like had it been developped for the Sega Dreamcast?
its out on pc next week!
Fantastic game! I don't own, but actually want a physical copy of the game.
Maybe fix the art credits? It's by Naoki Ikushima, not Yoshida this time.
Best tatic rpg EVER
LOL
I would like to point an error here: Akihiko Yoshida did not work on this game. Character Designs was all done by Naoki Ikushima
I feel like I must be one of the few that absolutely hates this "HD-2D" craze. I've lived through these years, I don't want them back. I LOVED tactics art style, bring that back over this, I'll relive that style over snes any day.
I bought both this and octopath and can't even get into them past a few hours. For the few, I'm sure this ruins what couple possibly be a great game.
Yeah you MUST be the only one OBVIOUSLY.
