I never thought Duke was unattractive. She was freakishly tall for the times. Her chin didn't seem huge either. Would have been nice if she'd been given confidence
She was a handsome woman, like Bea Arthur. Imposing height, and strong, angular features, made for a quirky attractiveness. Jacqueline Kennedy is a softer version
Hi Shirley! I'm so glad that you enjoyed this. I saw so many people sharing their Woolworth memories on my video about Barbara Woolworth Hutton. It's nice to see that here too. I vaguely remember shopping there with my parents.
I have to check out that show. A few people have mentioned it in my comments before. Well, I take that as a wonderful compliment. Thank you The Vestal Virgin! Maybe I need to call him. LOL!
Until I started watching these videos, I thought that soap opera writers just had really good imaginations. Thank you for another juicy hot mess of a story; knocked it out of the park, as usual!
Great job! You always put so much work into your videos, but the way you tied these two stories together was masterful. You can tell a lot of work went into it. I'm so glad I found your channel!! (Can you dish on the Gabors - especially Zsa Zsa?)
Hi Allison! Thank you for your kind words and thank you for coming to the premiere and chatting with us. This story made sense for me because when I made the separate videos about Barbara and Doris, both of their names kept coming up in each other's stories. Thank you for giving my channel a try! I have the Gabors on my list. I'm not sure how long it will take for me to get to them, but it's coming!
I saw a movie years ago that stated Doris was in love with the Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku. The child she had that died, according, to the movie, was his. It was Too Rich: the secret life of Doris Duke. Movies often aren’t based on true facts. Wondered in your research if you found out anything like this. Love your channel!!!!
As a teen in the 70s attending backyard parties of my parents, I was allowed one highball - tall glass of seven up (or Fresca if you had that on hand) and vodka on the rocks . Very refreshing. Love your videos on all these topics but especially the tawdry lives of the (last century’s)Rich and Famous. 😂
I have seen several of your videos and I really enjoy them. You do a great job and a lot of research. I have missed a lot of the videos so I am starting with some of the older videos. I greatly enjoyed this video, the Doris Duke and the Barbara Hutton ones. It amazes me how ruthless they were. I would love to know more about the “accidental” death of Doris Duke’s supposed best friend.
Hi Tracey! Thank you so much! I'm so glad that you enjoyed this one. I'm working on a new Titanic scandal now. I'm trying to figure out how to pick up the pace and get these out a little more quickly.

I loved this video, and the humor you put into it just cracked me up! I had to, as usual get some time to myself to savour every minute! Damn these two were really a hot mess!! Lol!! Thanks Ti!
Hi Sandi! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it! And I cannot tell you how great it makes me feel to know that you set aside personal time to watch my content. That means SO much fo me. Yes! They were a hot mess! I'm working on your next Titanic story now, and the man in this married couple is a hot mess too!
I absolutely loved this video. Your videos are so wonderful. I really enjoy the history. I'm a high school world history teacher, and I love how thoroughly researched your videos are. You do a lot of hard work to make these videos. You really make the history come alive. I need to see if you have one on those Gabor sisters. They sound hot messy, lol! Thank you for your wonderful videos. I will never look at my salt and pepper grinders the same way again 😂
Hi Kelly! I'm SO glad that you enjoyed this video. Thank you for letting me know, and thank you for all of your kind words. I am always so flattered when history teachers come to my channel and tell me that they appreciate my work. I had a high school world history teacher who made me understand the importance of history and I THANK YOU for teaching today's children. We need history teachers. Your job is so important. I have not created a video about the Gabor sisters, but you can be sure that one is coming! They were collectively a total hot mess. I understand what you mean about the pepper grinder. I don't even think that it's appropriate for me to own one anymore. LOL!
Another great one, Ti! Thanks. I love how you say Porfirio Rubirosa Arisa. It just rolls off your tongue. I’ll never look at large pepper mills the same way. But I must remember the name. 😊 What Zsa Zsa said…How sickening is right! Oh, & I play by the “girl code” too. I always enjoy your videos! ❤
My dad told me about the depression. Good people were starving. People shared and helped. The poor helped the poor. Carey Grant wanted to marry Sofia Loren, but she chose Carlo Ponti. You should do the feud of Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren.
Hi Kathy AKA Aroma Girl! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video. The research phase is my favorite part. Thank you for your kind words and generous gift to the channel!
The women lived their lives competing with each other and how awful that must have been for them... Thank you for this video.. Shows that money isn't all that it's cut out to be , especially in the happiness and love department
I lost my dad young and he was also my best friend. Somehow I married very very well. Yeah you get the nice house and a high end car but you realize material things don’t bring long term happiness. My husband and I get more joy giving money to our grown kids and donate to animal rescue shelters, food banks and to our church or people we know who are down on their luck. A relationship with the Lord is forever happiness, not things. I have no one to impress especially at 49 and shop at Walmart and target and am totally content. I could care less about name brand high end clothes. The press was so wrong to publish messy stuff like that, especially calling out someone for not being pretty, that’s cruel.
I offer you my deepest condolences on the loss of your father. I'm glad that you married well and that you have true joy in your life. It's a shame that neither Barbara nor Doris got to the point that you did.
@@TisHotMessHistory it psychologically messed me up to this day, however my 2 grown sons are my joy. I named my oldest after him. And Christmas Eve I became a first time grandmother to twin girls so while I don’t understand why God took my dad at 41, I do have many blessings in my life. As they say God never closes a door without leaving a window open.
I love your work - you are an amazing journalist. I would love to see your investigations of: Janet Leigh, Raquel Welch, Angela Davis, Meryl Oberon and Elaine Brown. Thank you!
Hi Lisa! I'm so glad that you enjoyed this video. Thank you for your kind words. Of the women you listed, I only plan to cover Merle Oberon at some point. She is on my 14 page list of topics.
There was a sadness in both of their eyes. Doris had a father who cared and taught her about life, Barbara did not. I watched both your videos on Doris and Barbara. In the end, very sad endings for them both.
LOL! You're not a fan of their faces? Too funny. Thank you for giving my channel a try. I'm so glad that you're enjoying my videos. Thank you for your kind words.
This is such a sad story. Two women that had so much in common, should have bonded and be there for one another. Instead, they chose to be mean and vindictive to one another and allow men, who loved neither of them to treat them and each other appallingly. They are proof there is no such thing as girl code. Their vast wealth did nothing for them except bring misery and bitchery. Why can't us women just be kind to one another? Money or no money. So very very sad.
I did the same with daughter from a very young age. We have girl code but sadly, from experience, there's very few like us. Yes, women need to grow up and stop being insecure.
@Hannah-rl5lt I'm with you. I practice girl code and I'm thankful to have women around me who do the same. Sure, not everyone does, but there are a lot of good, trustworthy women out there.
A Highball is a mixed drink consisting of an alcohol base and a non alcoholic mixer. Examples are scotch and soda, rum and Coke, gin and tonic, etc. They were favorites of my adult relatives growing up.

We all want that r🎞🎥 Rubirosa movie🤣🤣🤣 Rubirosa Bond. as he was Trujillo's spy as well instead of 007 it should be 0015🕵♂ Ye can't make it up Hell we need a movie on all 3
That's how I feel on that too especially with my head itching from a scalp condition. And can't make a close appointment because of limited funds and limited transportation.
26:23 I very Much enjoy You're perspective of looking at a thing as the whole and And telling the story to show the shift from how things begin to how they end... I watch And read a lot of historical content And this is a very unique presentation that I very much enjoy... And I agree About doors being prettier, I actually had to google to clarify which was which in the first five minutes of this video Because I had them confused thinking Doris was "the pretty one"
I'm so glad to know that you enjoy my presentations. I used to tell much shorter stories - just get straight to whatever the scandal was, and that was it. Those videos are still on the channel. But doing it this way, even though it takes me a MUCH longer time to finish a video, tells a better story. I think that it's more interesting to see how and why a person's life changes so much. I noticed that in the separate videos that I made about these 2 ladies that a lot of people thought that Doris was the prettier one.
I also wanted this explained, when I was listening to the list of loot he received. … imagine having an injury (her ankle) on your WEDDING NIGHT & then your groom LEAVES YOU alone while he goes out on the town celebrating without you ~ SO GROSS! 🤢 How did he even manage to get a dime? 🤨
50:58 I need to understand more about the peppergrinders lol... Did he happen to really like pepper? Did he somehow start the Trend of pepper grinders and restaurants? Was it just A totally random joke because its A large hand held item?
Your last guess is right. The restaurants were already using those large pepper grinders. Then someone decided that would be a good reference for his man part. I don't know how it caught on, but it did. LOL!
Fantastic and very entertaining! Doris Duke's incredible home Shangri-la on Oahu, is open to tours! It is near to Waikiki, you have to book a visit thru the Honolulu Museum of Art. They take small groups up in vans, and it is SPECTACULAR. Well well well worth the visit. The art, the design, the setting, it is just beautiful. I have a picture of myself on that blue striped couch shown around 1 07 (wish i cld find that pic!). They give you allllll the stories as well as the history of the art treasures within and the design and building process. Like the woman or not, that house is now a national treasure. Go see it!!! What a great video, Thank You!!!❤
How cool that you took the tour of her home. You make it sound really exciting. Maybe one of these days I should go see it. I hope that you are able to find your picture! Thank you for watching, and thank you for your compliment!
Rubirosa also dated shipping billionaire Aristotle Onassis ex wife Athena Livanos, Christina Onassis's mother and daughter of a wealthy Greek shipping tycoon. When did Rubirosa ever sleep?
I understand the ire of the people during the depression, but then, just as with the rich today, it was their money and their right to spend it as they saw fit. Actually, Doris was much more charitable than today's new money rich.
Oops! I promise that I won't not have double standards again. You taught me me lesson! Thank you for giving my channel a try. I hope that you continue to like it here!
Barbara was such a lamb to slaughter for so many opportunistic men. It almost seems like it became a game with the men. Like a competition of which one would be next to bag her and her money. But gold digging is a tale as old as time. It’s too bad she did not ever get it.

True.

I never thought Duke was unattractive. She was freakishly tall for the times. Her chin didn't seem huge either. Would have been nice if she'd been given confidence
I agree ..... she wasn't bad looking at all.
She would have made big money as a 1990s model, when tall and pointy were very, very in.

Rubirosa Bond. as he was Trujillo's spy as well
instead of 007 it should be 0015🕵♂
Ye can't make it up
Hell we need a movie on all 3
I’m not gonna feel sorry for two rich women being petty??? Who’s is me means nothing when they were loaded and could have done more philanthropy work.
That's how I feel on that too especially with my head itching from a scalp condition. And can't make a close appointment because of limited funds and limited transportation.
We have a lot of millionares today who fit that bill, as well. I won't drop names, though.
Both Scorpios
Doris was NOT ugly
The Girl Code, unfortunately, is not recognized or practiced nearly as much as The Guy Code.
Just 60 million 😩😩😩😩
If Doris had a prenuptial why did she have to give him so much?
I also wanted this explained, when I was listening to the list of loot he received. … imagine having an injury (her ankle) on your WEDDING NIGHT & then your groom LEAVES YOU alone while he goes out on the town celebrating without you ~ SO GROSS! 🤢 How did he even manage to get a dime? 🤨
DD wasn’t unattractive! So sad people are so harsh on women’s looks.
Death duties would have also destroyed their wealth
50:58 I need to understand more about the peppergrinders lol... Did he happen to really like pepper? Did he somehow start the Trend of pepper grinders and restaurants? Was it just A totally random joke because its A large hand held item?
Your last guess is right. The restaurants were already using those large pepper grinders. Then someone decided that would be a good reference for his man part. I don't know how it caught on, but it did. LOL!
She looks very intelligent
Sad they had to pay men to make them feel wanted.
Ti, what's wrong with a trigonometry exam? I found trigonometry fun (a lot of fun actually). Vector calculus, however, was a different story.
These young ladies, look as if though they could’ve been relatives or causin
Rubirosa also dated shipping billionaire Aristotle Onassis ex wife Athena Livanos, Christina Onassis's mother and daughter of a wealthy Greek shipping tycoon. When did Rubirosa ever sleep?
55:30 yea what's the deal with the bombers???
I have no idea. That's beyond just having expensive taste.
I understand the ire of the people during the depression, but then, just as with the rich today, it was their money and their right to spend it as they saw fit. Actually, Doris was much more charitable than today's new money rich.
Duke reminds me of Lisa Marie Presley, another woman who made up for her lack of beauty with incredible wealth.
LM was pretty!
How dare you not have double standards here just for that im going to like and subscribe. That'll show you 👏🏾
Oops! I promise that I won't not have double standards again. You taught me me lesson!
Thank you for giving my channel a try. I hope that you continue to like it here!
@TisHotMessHistory yeah i really enjoyed watching the video at work it was very informative. Lol i love historical tea.
Zsa Zsa, stand up!
Edit: it's funny, how Barbara seems to be the one, who copies Doris. I wonder, why she felt so jealous/insecure.
When is your video of the “hot mess” Fani Willis?
Barbara was such a lamb to slaughter for so many opportunistic men. It almost seems like it became a game with the men. Like a competition of which one would be next to bag her and her money. But gold digging is a tale as old as time. It’s too bad she did not ever get it.
Cary Grant smart
Interesting that in the debutante photos Barbara got a halo.
Sad. Son died. why did Doris donate alot of it
I dunno, Doris seems hotter than Barbara in some photos. She's got that sexy "femme fatale" vibe going.
I think that most people in the comments agree with you. Doris definitely beat out Barbara later in life.
Doris did kill Simone her driver
